CP's Foster Kisu has arrived!

Written by Kisu's foster Mom

Little Kisu arrived here Monday. Her ears are bare and black, as is her tummy. Kisu has other bare spots as well and is very itchy. She is thin, but has a great appetite. She loves her treats of boiled egg and anything else foster mom and dad offer. Kisu still had her spay stitches in and she was as still as a mouse while foster dad held her while I removed them. I plan to give her a soothing bath today, so hope she is as cooperative for that.

It is amazing that after all Kisu has been through, she is the sweetest little girl. She wags her tail for either Mike or I and loves getting any attention. She has also shown a playful side and shown some interest in toys and killing her blanket:) We have not heard a peep out of her sound wise. Not on the drive home or even when all my kids barked "who is the new kid?".

I have orders from Foster Dad that I must take weekly pictures to show her progress. She is being fostered in Arkansas. After she has her 2 week evaluation period, you can read about her on the CP website.

CP foster BOSCAR *B*elieves

Written by Boscar's foster mom

Boscar whispered these words in my ear as he snuggled his head on my shoulder and gave a big sigh.

I *B*elieve in rescue angels that set me free

I *B*elieve in soft warm blankies and toys made just for me!

I *B*elieve in good food that I now get twice a day

I *B*elieve in the good life I've been given today.

I *B*elieve in soft words, gentle hands, and soft kisses too

I *B*elieve in Santi Paws because he brought me lots of presents - whoooo hoooo!

I *B*elieve in a forever home that will come my way

I *B*elieve in Col. Potter for saving me that wonderful day.

Boscar is being fostered in Illinois and you can learn more about him after his 2 week evaluation period by clicking here.

An Update on Sarut and Halik

Written by Sarut and Halik's foster mom

Just a quick update on Sarut and Halik.

Sarut is a survivor and although she is and always will be a special girl, she is holding her own at the moment and we are treating her eyes as aggressively as we are able at this time before she returns to the vet to see if she will be able to keep both. We have found out that Sarut loves cheese and will gobble down any pills I give her as long as they are covered in that yellow gooey goodness.

Halik, the 8 yr old girl who I am fostering as well and came from the same place as Sarut, is doing better. She is done with her antibiotics and we think any problems from her infected uterus, infected eyes, infected ears and infected mouth are behind her. A visit to the vet will hopefully confirm this, these girls need all the breaks they can get after living the horrible life they have had to live so far.

Thank you my family so much for your help and huge support for Sarut and Halik.

Sarut needs Guardian Angels! Won't you consider becoming one?

Written by Sarut's foster mom

I want to tell you from the bottom of my heart Merry Christmas. Without all of you Sarut probably would not have lived to see this Christmas. Sarut is warm and safe. We have put her on the web site as a guardian angel girl. My Christmas Present to myself will be to become a guardian angel for this precious little one. Here is what I wrote for her...

Sarut needs your help. She has not had an easy start to life. In her 6.5 years on this earth so far she has known nothing but filth, cruelty and abuse. Her tiny 12 pound body endured more than it's share of neglect. Sarut is in danger of losing both her eyes. She is currently on expensive medication to try and save them. Sarut had a dental when she was spayed and besides the 5 missing teeth she had already she had 17 more extracted and is on pain medication for this. As if her emancipated body had not had enough hardship she also has mange and is being treated for that. This little girl is a fighter and wants to live a good life. She can't do that without your help, won't you please consider becoming a guardian angel for Sarut or you can click the chip in link on the top of this page. Thank you for your kind words, prayers and donations for this girl.

HO HO HO ... GUESS WHO JUST SLID DOWN THE CP CHIMNEY!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

The need for rescue assistance doesn't take a holiday ever. Shelters continue to take in far too many lost, abandoned and unwanted animals daily. Those not reclaimed, adopted or lucky enough to find a rescue to take them, have no future, no loving, caring family to spend the holidays with. They won't know the joy of a special treat or gift for the holidays ... they will only know death, their bodies discarded like used wrapping paper.

One of our wonderful vets was contacted by the local shelter about a Cairn that had been picked up as a stray. No one came to claim him and the shelter is so overflowing with dogs they have them in small wire crates stacked on top of each other as high as they can go. No one is adopting right now because of the holidays and even those few families looking can't even see half the available dogs at this shelter because they are so crammed in. By the time Santa Claus is making the rounds this year, this boy would have been dead. Luckily for him, someone was making their list and checking it twice, deciding he wasn't naughty, but rather quite nice and so made the effort to get him to rescue. Tonight this adorable, friendly, full of personality little Cairn boy is now snuggled all safe and warm in a kennel at our vet while visions of a happily ever after dance in his head.

Please welcome Claus to the CP Family ... Ho Ho Ho!

A Prayer for Animals

A Prayer for Animals
By Albert Schweitzer

Hear our humble prayer,
O God,
for our friends, the animals,
especially for those who are suffering;
for any that are lost or deserted
or frightened or hungry.
We entreat for them all
Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them,
we ask a heart of compassion
and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves,
to be true friends to animals
and so to share
the blessings
of the merciful.

Sleigh Bells Ring!

Written by Sleigh's foster mom

Sleigh arrived at her foster home on last week, She was happy to be out of her crate after the long trip.

What an absolute cutie. Sleigh wants to be with her people. Her tail stands up and wags like crazy. She loves out doors. Resident Cairns find her invisible.

She is so sweet. I cannot believe she is a mill kid. She eats her dinner one kibble at a time, dainty little thing that she is. Sleigh is an 18 months old snuggler.

Christmas Miracles in Ohio! CP Fosters Mari and Missy make great strides!

Contributed by Mari and Missy's foster Mom

Missy snuggles up to Mari

Mari and Missy

Gilly on Mari

Mari is making huge strides all of a sudden. I guess Missy kind of broke the ice and showed her that other dogs close to her can be okay. She wanted up in my chair with me the other evening (this is very rare, she's more a couch girl than a chair girl normally) so I picked her up. Later Gilly jumped up next to the chair and eventually situated himself so that his butt was resting on top of Mari's butt. That never could have happened a year ago. Later Missy crawled in the big bed with Mari when Janna barked. After a while she was not only IN the bed but all cuddled up close to Mari. I don't think this could have happened a year ago either. Mari is wearing the pink jammies and Missy is wearing red/white/blue.

Mari will still crinkle her lip when Alan is giving out treats if Mari and Missy BOTH put their feet up on him while standing right next to each other. Mari thinks that she's the only one allowed to do that. But all Alan does is push them both off and Mari is okay.

Both Mari (Marisela) and Missy (Tinker) are being fostered in Ohio. Please click here to learn more about them.

Make sure your pets have a safe, happy holiday season!

Courtesy of Animal Medical Center

Lights, decorations, good food…every year, as we celebrate the holidays, we fill our homes with seasonal cheer for ourselves and our families. However, what may seem beautiful and harmless to us may pose hidden dangers to our pets. Don't let an emergency spoil the festivities! Below are some common holiday hazards for dogs and cats and how to prevent them.

Holiday hazards - How to keep your pet safe

Electric cords Keep all electric cords securely taped down or out of reach of your pet. Dogs and cats may chew dangling wires and be burned or electrocuted.

Ornaments Hang ornaments out of reach of your pet. Dogs, especially, may eat ornaments or wire hangers, which can get caught in the stomach and intestines.

Chocolate Keep all holiday foods away from your pet. Chocolate contains ingredients (e.g., caffeine) that can be lethal to dogs and cats.

Tinsel, ribbon and string Make sure these are kept out of reach and properly disposed of. If swallowed, any of these can require emergency surgery to remove. Tinsel also has sharp edges that can cut the mouth.

Lilies, other flowers, and houseplants Prevent your pets from eating plants or flower arrangements. Lilies are very poisonous to cats.

Christmas tree Put the tree in a pet-safe room or monitor your pet when he or she is around the tree. Dogs and cats may eat the needles (even from artificial trees) or drink the water at the base of the tree, which can be toxic (especially if it contains preservatives).

In many cases, if your pet has eaten or drunk something toxic, warning signs will include gastrointestinal problems, such as vomiting and diarrhea. Other signs may include tiredness and lack of appetite, especially in cats that have eaten lilies. If your pet shows any of these signs, or if you think he or she has eaten something dangerous but is not showing any signs yet, please call us right away. Treating your pet as soon as possible is essential!

We will be glad to answer any questions you have about your pet's health. Let's work together to make sure your entire family has a happy, healthy holiday season!

COL. POTTER FAMILY -- DO YOU "B"ELIEVE???

Written by CPs VP of Intakes

It's that time of the year when children's eyes are bright, their smiles are wide and they are filled with anticipation because they "Believe" in the magic of the season. As we grow older and become adults, we discover the "Believing" and magic are the result of loving, caring hearts of our family and friends for the children and those in need.

At Col. Potter, we like to "Believe" and bring the magic of rescue and freedom throughout the year to each of the furkids that become a part of the Col. Potter Family. We are a large family, numbering more than 800 strong and so we have been able to grow over the past few years to help more than 400 Cairns each year and this year appears to be no different. We have some incredible volunteers who generously give of their time, their talents and financially. However, the workload is great and the need is greater. We need more people, more volunteers to become actively involved, to work on teams, basically, to put their money where their mouth is, but in this case, put their time and talents to work to help the furkids.

No matter what your talents or the amount of time you have to give, we have a job to fit. We have a great need on the Transport Team, not for drivers, although they are always most welcome, but for volunteers to help coordinate the actual transport. We can't bring furkids in if we can't get them moved to their foster home. No particular talents are needed, just "Believing" you can help and make magic in moving a furkid.

Two furkids joined the Col. Potter Family yesterday. It will take a little time for them to "B"elieve and understand the magic that is freedom, but one day in the not too distant future, their eyes too will be bright, they will have a smile on their faces and they will be filled with anticipation as they find the perfect forever home.

Both of them are named from our Name a Cairn Program:

Bute: 1 year old, male, brindle - named by the Vancouver Island Group, Iris A, Iona T., Geraldina S, Allison S, BJ A and Mike L who continue to save their coins for Cairns - named for an inlet off Vancouver Island

Boscar: 6 year old, male, brindle - named in honor of Fay C's much loved cat

Do you "B"elieve? Will you help bring magic and freedom to other little Cairns by jumping in and volunteering. "B"elieve me, you will never regret getting actively involved ... just look at the faces of Bute and Boscar ...

CP foster Sarut begins her journey to better health - Video!

Contributed by Sarut's foster mom

Little Sarut is still at the vet. She will be spayed on Monday and then come home with me to foster. She is on medication to try and save her eyes. They do not want to remove the bad one if they don't have to. Since I will be fostering her and the vet is about 20 minutes away we think she should get the proper care needed. The same vet will be working with her from start to finish and they think this will work out for the best.

I know you can't really see her eyes in this video but it shows she is feeling much better. I took this just a couple of days ago at the vet office

Note from Blogger: Sarut is being fostered in Texas and we all hope that she will be able to keep both of her eyes.

Pets for Christmas?

Contributed by a CP Volunteer

The holidays can be the best of times to welcome a new pet into your home. Or they can be the worst of times. While the emotions and warmth of the season can inspire you to share your home with an animal, the distractions can also make this a terrible time to bring home a furry friend. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind when thinking about acquiring a pet over the holidays.

The Worst of Times

There's no shame in being honest. Most households are too preoccupied with the festivities to take on the responsibility of a new pet. Here are some reasons to put off an adoption until after the holidays are over.

Beginnings are important. When you welcome a pet into your home, you promise to keep him for life. You must make him a priority until he feels comfortable as a member of the family. The holiday season with its shopping, entertaining and general confusion rarely leaves you with time, energy and attention to spare.

Training is crucial. When you bring home a dog especially a puppy it's important to set up a routine he can count on. If you're too busy to feed and walk him on schedule, it's almost impossible for him to learn how to behave. He may lose his appetite, wet the carpet, or act out destructively. If it's hard enough to keep a well-trained dog on an even keel during the holidays, think of the confusion a new pet will feel amid the Yuletide chaos.

Holiday food and decorations. A lively young puppy or kitten is almost guaranteed to go after blinking lights, shiny ornaments and trailing tinsel, all of which can be dangerous. Put off the adoption until the decorations are put away until next year.

The Best of Times

People communicate almost intuitively with animals, and some people can get to know and appreciate a pet in the best spirit of the season. Who can do it? Here are some candidates.

A single person who will spend most of the holiday season alone and wants company.

A couple without children who would like the emotional payback a pet provides.

People with time to spare. Can at least one adult take time off from work for about two weeks? Can you give large chunks of time to your new pet, playing and getting to know his personality, his likes and dislikes? All new pets need extra attention, but puppies and kittens 8 to 16 weeks old need intense socialization at this phase of their lives.

People who want to scale down. Families who have decided to change the pace of their holiday can do well with a new pet. You have to be willing to spend a season with a minimum of decorations and visitors, but if you're ready for him, a new pet can bring great joy to the season.

Never Give an Unexpected Living Gift

People sometimes make the mistake of providing a pet to ease the loneliness of a friend, but all too often these animals wind up in a shelter by New Year's. Here are a few reasons pets never make good surprises.

You can't be sure that the recipient wants to take on the responsibility of a pet, including providing medical care for the next 10 to 20 years.

A person should be able to choose his or her own pet companion.

Never give a cat or a dog to replace one that just died. Some people need time to mourn their loss before they can welcome a new animal into their lives.

Give the Promise of a Pet Instead

Instead of bringing a surprise pet home, you can put presents under the tree - a bowl, a collar, a book about dogs or cats. Enclose a "gift certificate," a card that promises to take family members to a breeder or shelter after the holidays so they can choose the pet of their dreams.

Dear Santa, by a Cairn in Foster Care

By CP's Bridge, a Cairn in Foster Care

Dear Santa:

I hope you get my letter and can help me with my request,
Not just for me, there are so many, so I am asking also for all the rest.

Our lives have been so very tough, some of us more than the other,
From a very young age is how it started when we were taken from our mothers.

Some of us have lived our lives caged, others on the streets,
We have known hunger and thirst, not lots of food or treats.

Then there are those who lived in homes where there was no compassion,
Some ignored, some beat, some of us used just for fashion.

And then one day we were no longer wanted and taken away,
Each of our destiny’s unknown from to day to day to day.

Some of us puppy’s, some sick and some were kind of old,
Some were afraid and some were weak, but some of us very bold.

So many of us made it out and rescued, our lives at last had been saved,
But still Dear Santa there is just one thing that we ask for each and every day.

We need a home we can call our own, and someone to love forever,
A dish of food, a bowl of water, a life we can share together.

So please Dear Santa this Christmas please find this present in your sack,
A loving home with people who will promise to never take us back.

My foster Mom has promised me that you would try to help us if you can,
She said you know how special we are and in your heart know where we’ve been.

So please Dear Santa tell them I’ve been good along with all the rest,
And if I get my special home I’ll always be the best.

Love and Cairn Kisses,
Bridge
A Col. Potter Rescued Cairn

Note from Blogger: Bridge is being fostered in Florida and you can learn more about him and the other cairns available for adoption by clicking here.

It's a Jolly Holi-dog Celebration!

They aren't cairns but we're sure you'll agree that this is a wonderful canine Christmas celebration brought to you by Best Friend's Animal Society!
