Life is Berry Good in CP

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

Have you ever stopped to think about what must go through the minds of the little Cairns that come from a breeding facility and then suddenly find themselves in the loving arms of Col. Potter? No more sleeping on wire crates, in the cold, wet and heat, plenty of good food and clean water, a bath and grooming to remove the years of filth from their coats and skin, medical attention for infections and injuries and most importantly, a gentle, caring, loving human touch. I hope they think Life is Berry Berry Good in CP!!

Thanks to the efforts of MANY CP volunteers, five little Cairns made their way to freedom yesterday. Today they traveled to Oz Project which is once again open and ready to welcome CP Cairns! My thanks to everyone who made this possible this weekend!!

Please help me welcome the Life is Berry Berry Good Kids:

Strawberry: Female, born 11/14/05

Cranberry: Female, born 11/18/03

Raspberry: Female, born 10/3/05

Elderberry: Male, born 10/22/07

Blackberry: Male, born 10/30/07

All of these PM kids are only able to come into CP when we have enough resources to care for them. One of the major fundraisers we have to cover the costs for the Life is Berry Berry Good Kids and all the others is through the New Leash on Life. Please support the NLOL and share CP's stories, or should I say the stories of the furkids of CP, with your friends, coworkers, with everyone and ask them to help support CP and our efforts to give even more little Cairns a Berry Berry Good Life!!

Welcome DJ Buddy

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please help welcome DJ Buddy, a very lucky boy. This little one found himself tied to a pole in Pennsylvania. He arrived at the shelter for his "stray hold". When that was over, he was in danger of euthanasia due to space issues. Col. Potter was contacted, having worked with this shelter in the past. Thanks to one of our dedicated volunteers, he was pulled within hours of the Intakes Team learning that he was in immediate danger. As always, the outpouring of offers of help from CP volunteers was wonderful! So many offering to help, knowing that his life depended on it!

DJ Buddy is estimated to be one year old, and reported to be very sweet. He is enjoying his spa treatment, before moving onto his foster home.

Welcome DJ Buddy!

Abby's Big Adventure

Written by Abby's foster mom

I am Abby. The other day I had what Foster Mom called a Big Adventure. I was hanging out in the yard with my foster posse, when this man came into the yard. He left the gate open and we all took off. I was very excited and ran like the wind, all of a sudden I was running alone, the posse went back to the yard to get treats. I thought about returning too but then I caught a really good smell and I was off again.

So when I decided that it was time to go home I discovered I was lost. I saw this fence that looked like the fence that went around my yard I worked really hard and found a way through it. Well it was not the yard and I was tired and full of burrs so I sat down to take a rest. There was this big noisy thing coming down the tracks (yep train tracks) I was scared so I got really low to hide. A man on the train called an engineer hopped off the train and scooped me up. I was suddenly riding the rails.

Well my disappearance caused quite a commotion and people all over were alerted to my escape. Some network told everyone I took off. My foster Mom came home from work and foster Daddy was really upset and tired from running after me. They got in the car to look for me. I was lucky I had my tag on because the engineer looked at the number called it and spoke to a lady in Ohio who talked to foster Mom. The engineer and foster mom talked on the phone and figured out how to get me back. I got to be on the train for a 6 mile ride, It was fun but very loud with yucky smells called diesel and creosol. I was really happy to see foster Daddy who spoke to me about the dangers of life on the lam.

I thinks that I would like to have another big adventure but I thinks I will wait for a forever family who can hold the end of my leash and keep me safe. You can click here to learn more about me.

Gouda of "Say Cheese" has Arrived in AR

Written by Gouda's foster mom

Gouda Day 1 in Foster Care

Here are a few pictures I managed of Gouda, our new foster boy. He doesn't let any grass grow under his feet, so the picturess are not the best. You will see that he is with some of the girls. I am a firm believer of waiting to introduce new fosters, but after listening to howling and whining all afternoon with a headache, and tail wags all around through the expen, I decided to try intros.
Gouda is a bit timid of humans, but all tail wags with the other dogs. I am sure the girls will show him that people are fun too.

The Oz Project's First Guests

The Oz Project Chronicles-Melody Marie-Hedy

Click the link above for heartwarming stories of the OzKids, those that started their journey into freedom at The Oz Project. These stories are dedicated to the hardworking volunteers of Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network. Without their love and dedication these little cairns would have never made their way into rescue, and to The Oz Project. There have been nearly seventy OzKids. I hope in the years to come there will be many more. I will be adding their stories as I complete them. So come back soon. Thanks for visiting.

The Oz Project's First Guests

After months of hard work and preparation we were finally ready for our first guests. I drove north across The Big Mac Bridge to Manistque. There I met a transport driver and helped her load two little cairn girls into my car. I could hardly wait to get back on the road with my very first charges. It took forever because as much as I wanted to get back on the road, she had already fallen in love with them and hated to let them go.

Melody Marie and Hedy were two little sisters. They were surrendered by a breeder. It was their lucky day when she decided she could no longer keep them. It was in fact the first day of the rest of their lives. Even though they were sisters they were nothing alike.

MELODY MARIE 11/19/06-12/03/06

Melody Marie was open and outgoing. She craved attention. Within minutes she was crawling all over me wanting to be held and petted. Who could resist? She was a beautiful petite little princess. She was cute just walking. Because she loved being the center of attention it wasn't long before she started sitting with her little feet in the air begging for more. In no time at all I trained her to dance. I would offer her a treat holding it a few inches above her head. Soon she was standing on her back feet. Once she could do that I started slowly circling the treat over her head. She quickly picked up turning to follow the treat. Now she was dancing! I now wondered, who in the world could ever resist her? Not me.

She was such a loving little girl. She loved nothing more than being held and giving kisses. One night I was sitting on the picnic table bench with my back against the table. I was holding her sister tightening her harness. All of a sudden I felt tiny little kisses on the back of my neck. I couldn't believe it. Melody Marie had climbed up on the bench on the other side of the table. Then she had walked across the table top just to kiss me. Of course I quickly put sissy down on the floor and grabbed Melody Marie. The last thing in the world I wanted was for her to fall. Not many dogs will work that hard to show appreciation or love. Melody Marie "Our Little Circus Dog" would!

HEDY 11/19/06-12/03/06

Hedy was afraid of people. She was a little shed dog. They would leave a shed door ajar allowing her to come and go as she pleased. She was left to roam the property and take care of herself. No one had ever called her to them and petted her. She had never been held. She was a little wild girl.

When we arrived at Oz I hooked a leash to her harness as I opened her crate door letting her out in the outdoor ex-pen. Thank goodness, I had the foresight to do that! The next hour and a half I spent catching glimpses of her out of the corner of my eye. All the while trying to side step onto her leash as she ran by me.

Later that same night as I was sitting holding her sister she cautiously put her little feet on my knee. Yet each time I looked in her direction she would run away. She was so frightened of her strange new surroundings, and me.

Hedy was incredibly brave. She trembled so violently that her whole body shook. Yet she wanted the new life being offered to her. She would timidly follow her sister over to me as long as I would sit on the floor or ground. Yet she couldn't take those last tiny steps to me. Soon she no longer ran from me but when I would approach her she would freeze allowing me to pick her up and carry her. I held and carried her often. Soon I knew that she had started to enjoy it. I could feel her snuggle against me.

Hedy took courage from her sister. I worried how Hedy would ever make it in this world without Melody. If Melody ever barked Hedy would run over and stand behind her and bark too.

Then one day magic happened. My husband Mark had come to Oz for the weekend to help. I had the two little girls in the outdoor kennel that morning when he came out of the cabin. They had never seen him before. Melody started barking. She was afraid of him. I could hear it in her bark. Hedy could too. Hedy made a big circle running right by Melody. She stopped behind me. There she stood peeking out from between my legs barking at him. For the first time she had not trusted her sister to protect her, but a person. For Hedy it was a huge step. It was then that I knew she was going to make it. She would be fine. Sure, Hedy still had fear and trust issues, but she was on her way to happily ever after.

Cleaning up after the dog - poem

by Jason Tandon

Pull plastic bag from pocket
and wave it like a flag

or diploma. Make sure many people
congratulate your care
for the community.

Check bag for holes.
Double check.

Inspect stool for odd hues.
Greens, blues, blood.

Evaluate consistency.

You don't want to leave smears
on the sidewalk or grass—no prints.

Getaway must be clean.

Prepare to go in for all of it.
Hold breath.
Grab, clamp, reverse bag, twist, knot, cinch.

Smell hands.

Hold loaded bag high in the air,
assure onlookers that Everything is Okay.

If a cop should cruise by,
his crew cut
bristlingin the sun,

hold that bag higher
so he, too, can salute
your contribution.

The bomb diffused,
the world a little safer, a little cleaner,

will not offend the deep treads of someone's shoes.

IN THE FOSTER SPOTLIGHT!!

Written by a CP Media Volunteer

Macallan is an energetic senior guy who may be as young as 9 or as old as 12 or 13. His journey into Col. Potter began when he was surrendered to a New York police station over a year ago. He was then sent to Animal Control, where his future was grim at best. He landed at an Animal Care facility where he remained sweet and calm, although he must have been confused and frightened. Most of his health problems might have been very minor had they been caught earlier by regular veterinary care. Many might not have occurred at all. He probably wasn't feeling too well either, as he was desperately in need of a dental, and passing blood in his urine.

One of his issues was a large bladder stone which was removed in a 2 hour 45 minute surgery. Although he must have been experiencing quite a bit of discomfort, he didn't have one accident in his foster home. He spent awhile recuperating after having most of his teeth extracted and his bladder stone removed. Now he charms people with his snaggle toothed grin! He can use the doggie door and he will also let you know if he needs to go out if he is in another part of the house.

He wants you to know that even though he’s an old guy, he’s a sweet guy. He is healthy for his age and can still hop up onto the sofa or bed and goes up and down the stairs with no problem. He is equally friendly to males and females and good with teenagers. A typical cairn, he does chase cats. He likes to play with his younger foster brother and is very vocal when he lets everyone know what a good time he is having. Foster mom says that he doesn’t hear that well anymore and that may be why he gets so chatty. As you can see above, he loves “le pool”.

He loves to be with people and doesn’t like being left behind. Foster mom had hoped that he could stay with them, but it has become apparent that he would be much happier in a home with someone who could keep him company most of the time. Since foster mom and dad work and the kids are at school all day, he gets nervous without people around. He’s just fine when his people come back.

Macallan doesn’t like closed doors and is happiest when he can see someone. He gets very excited about walks and he loves to be chased in the yard.

He does the gopher sit when he wants something from the dinner table. After mealtime, he runs to his towel and wipes his face clean! He is always happy to see you and his tail seems to wag in complete circles! He would love to live out his years with you at his side. Won’t you consider giving him the ‘chance of a lifetime’?

Please click here to get to know him through his pictures! You can learn more about him and his journey in CP by following this link .

Macallan is presently being fostered in Canada. Please click here to complete an adoption application or contact your matchmaker if you are interested in him as there is some assistance available in transporting him.

Welcome Donal to Col. Potter

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Donal is a cute wheaten boy, approximately one year old. A stray, he was very lucky to be found by a vet tech. And even luckier, this vet tech knew about Col. Potter and contacted us for help. The vet tech and the veterinary clinic she works for generously provided all Donal's vetting and even had him microchipped.

Everyone that has met Donal says that he is a very sweet boy! I have a feeling he will find High Cotton in a very short time.

Welcome Donal!

There is a new girl in CP town!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Meet Kamber! She is a pretty wheaten girl just short of her 3rd birthday in July. She loves to play ball, knows commands such as sit, down, give paw, speak, and gets along well with other dogs.

But she became stressed when a new baby was added to her home. As the baby became a toddler, her stress grew much worse and it became clear that this girl really needed a home without young children. Her owners really wanted to ensure that she found another loving home, but without little people and, after hearing about Col. Potter, felt we were the best organization to ask for help.

Please welcome Kamber!

Welcome Boomer and Benji!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please help welcome Col. Potter's Boomer and Benji. Found wandering along a highway in Texas, they were picked up and brought to the shelter. This shelter works hard to get purebred dogs right into rescue, so CP was contacted immediately. Lucky for them, we were able to say YES!

Boomer is a 4-5 year old black brindle boy, and Benji is a 3 year old wheaten girl. Both are reported to be sweet, friendly, and in great need of learning some house manners.

LOST FOSTER DOG 'ABBY' IS FOUND IN ILLINOIS ON THE RAILROAD TRACKS!

Written by a CP Volunteer and Abby's Foster Mom

Mary's foster Albuquerque is home safely. I got a call from two gentlemen who were on a TRAIN. They said they found the dog running on the tracks!!! She was wearing the wrong tag so initially I thought I was dealing with *another* lost dog....but it turned out that for some reason Abby was wearing the tag of another of Mary's dogs.

Now this tale has a happy ending because there are good people in this world. She ran on to the railroad tracks and was afraid to move so the conductor picked her up put her on the train. She had her CPCRN tag on so they knew who to call and they got in contact with Bonnie who called me, Abby's foster mom.

Abby was having fun she got to ride on a Union Pacific double Diesel engine. I zoomed down the road for 6 miles met the train. The conductor stopped the train to let miss Abby off so she could return home. And for her efforts of escape her only reward was lots of burrs and creosol from the rail road ties.. It was a very scary two hours for that little girl but it could have been much, much worse. Thanks to all who prayed for Abby's safety and safe return.

LOST FOSTER DOG IN CHICAGO AREA

Albuquerque: Female, born3/15/06, wheaten with black points

A neighbor opened the gate and let Mary C's foster girl, Albuquerque (nickname Abby) run out shortly after 5. Abby is tag 4201 and she's a darker wheaten brindle. Abby is fearful of people. She's wearing her CP tag 4201 and a green harness. Anyone who can take a dog to walk and help search would be hugely appreciated.

I would definitely take something stinky and yummy smelling with you along with an extra leash. Mary was not even home when she called to let me know so I suspect she is on her way home now.

If you live in the area, any assistance would be appreciated.

Rockin' Rudy joins CP

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please give a warm Col. Potter welcome to our new boy, Rockin' Rudy.

This young gorgeous boy was found as a stray, and being a typical cairn boy was rather barky at the shelter. He didn't make a good impression to folks looking for a new pet. He did very well with other dogs, although they watched him run circles in the play yard wondering where he got all his energy from! He was out of time, so the shelter contacted us to see if we could help. He was picked up over the weekend and is spending a week at the spa, getting ready for the next leg of his journey.

Welcome Rockin' Rudy!

Why you CAN foster!

Written by a CP foster and adoptive mom

A couple of weeks ago I sent Winfrey NKA Winnie to her forever home. I have not had time to post to tell you all about it nor have I had time to down load pictures yet but I will post them as soon as I can. Any way, Mike & I decided we would drive Winnie to her forever home it was cheaper for Winnie's new Mom & it gave us a chance to see her new digs & meet her new Mom. Winnie was my heart, the hardest foster I have ever had to give up. But she & Shelby had fought a couple of times & Shelby was being very bad so Shelby was banished to my Mom's house till we adopted Winnie.

I just knew I would find a reason not to like Mary & Winnie would come back home with us. We got there & visited. Winnie really had no interest in Mary and she kept marking the house. I thought oh good Mary is not going to like this she is going to say take her back home with you. Nebbie came along for moral support. When Mike went & got her out of the car, it seemed to settle Winnie down so we had dinner & visited a bit more, fed the girls and Mike & I left to go to the hotel to see how they did overnight. Mary made us a wonderful dinner! Winnie was a little sad but did fine. She only pottied a few times in the house the next morning but was figuring things out.

We all walked along Lake Michigan( Winnie's house is only a couple of blocks away) visited a few more minutes, Winnie had even settled down & was resting on the floor. I almost forgot Winnie has a sister Maeve, another cairn who lost her cairn sister over the Christmas holidays. After we were there a bit Maeve really started to perk up - she was missing having a friend. Then Mike & I said our good byes to everyone. Foster Mom did not even cry till just now(and our last night when I fed her). I really miss her. But I know she will get much more attention & love than I can give her) Winnie is one very lucky girl!

For those of you who say "I just do not know how you can foster". Well I used to think that & yes I have flunked 2 times. The truth is it is HARD very Hard to let these little kids leave you after you have seen them make huge break throughs. Here is how you handle it. For one thing you can't keep every dog you foster. Then you have to look at the fact that not every dog you foster will get along with your pack or you for that matter. Hard to believe your personality will not mesh with every dog who comes through your house but even those you LOVE will ALL your heart! Then the biggest reason you CAN let them go is that you know that another home with less dogs, or just lost the love of their life needs a new one badly and you have the dog with the perfect personality for them.

You send them off with love & tears knowing you are going to get another foster to mold and shape into a loving prince or princess. Besides, fostering is like getting a new puppy all the time and unless you get a puppy to foster you skip the teething & just get all the fun of their new discoveries! Their first toy, a leaf blowing across the yard it is amazing & wondrous. So even though your heart gets tugged at, your heart gets bigger with each foster you let find forever.
So click here to learn more about how you too can foster for CP.

Now I am going to go kiss my forever kids & my foster while you read the other reason you can let your fosters go....The updates from the forever families!

Good morning Nebbie and foster Mom,

I miss you both but am learning lots of new things -- walking on leash, and wrestling with my new mom, and, oh yes, manners with other dogs. They wouldn't let me go to class with Mom yesterday, but next week I can go. My new mom's lap is pretty good, but I miss sitting on foster Mom and Dad's lap. And, Maeve's an ok buddy -- I keep her safe, but she just follows me around and sometimes gets in my way. By the way, I've decided to live here forever, but we might try to visit you this summer.

Love,

Winnie

Note from new mom: We're working diligently on manners and walking. We've had a good number of people over and Winnie's become very comfortable with people visiting. I come to decide that you're right she could very well be the only dog in the house and be happy. We are the best of buds.

Thanks so much for bringing Winnie into our lives,

Great quote - If Dogs could Talk

Contributed by a CP Volunteer

From a book I'm reading called Dogs of Babel:

...above all, dogs are witnesses. They are allowed access to our most private
moments. They are there when we think we are alone. Think of what they could tell us. They sit on the laps of presidents. They see acts of love and violence, quarrels and feuds, and the secret play of children. If they could tell us everything they have seen, all of the gaps of our lives would stitch themselves together.

Rocky and Grommy, CP Heeroz are on the Animal Rescue Site

Written by Rocky and Grommy's mom

My Heeroz

Here's Rocket Man (Rocky) and Grommett (Grommy) The Noo Yawk Heeroz. I adopted these two darlings from Col. Potter Cairn Rescue. I also fostered for Cairn Rescue and Sonnet, a fostered cairn who was adopted locally. She got loose from her owners and was hiding in a wooded area near her new home. Because she was afraid, she hid from those who were looking for her.

I brought Rocky and Grommy to the site as they knew Sonnet from her foster home days. The boys left "pee-mail" all around the edges of the wooded area.

Next morning, her owners spotted Sonnet walking out of the woods. We believe the "pee-mail" my boys left helped her to venture out in the open and back to her home.

Rocky, Grommy, Sonnet and her cairn brother Shammy are now best buds and often have play dates.
