Charlie the cairn is rescued after a night in Vale quarry
Guernsey Press
AN 18-MONTH-OLD cairn terrier had to be rescued recently after he fell off the edge of a quarry.
The Ambulance and Rescue Service inshore lifeboat and cliff rescue crew were called to Hougue Ricart Quarry in the Vale after the dog had gone missing late on Sunday afternoon. And after a two-hour rescue, Charlie was reunited safe and well with his owner, Jean Kindred.
‘I’m so relieved,’ said Mrs Kindred, 73.
‘I’m so pleased he is OK and I would like to thank all these people who helped to rescue him.’
Incident officer Andy Adam carries Charlie the adventurous cairn to safety after his frightening ordeal trapped overnight in a quarry.

THE NIGHT BEFORE DOG-MAS
Twas the night before Dog-Mas.
When all through the poundNot a puppy was yelping
Or playing around.
Our leashes were hung
By our kennels with care,
In hopes that St. Bernard
Would soon find us there.
Chihuahuas were curled up
All snug in their beds,
While visions of doggie treats
Danced in their heads
.
Max in his collar
On another dog's lap
Had tucked in his tail
For a midwinter's nap.
When outside the room
There arose such a clatter
My ears perked right up
To hear what was the matter
Away to the window
I jumped up with glee
And barked at the shadows
That were cast by a tree.
The glow from the moon
Changed the night into day
And started me thinking
Woof, woof! Time to play!
When, what to my puppy-dog
Eyes did I see,
But a splendid dog-sled
Led by doggies like me.
With a regal furred driver
Commanding, not stern
I yelped to the others,
That must be St. Bern!
More rapid than greyhounds
Our saviors they came
And we barked and we howled
And called them by name:
There's Duchess!
There's King!
Fat Chance!
And bare Buffy
On Fido! On Scooter!
On Rover and Scruffy!
Go by the red hydrant
And run past those trees
Nothing can stop you,
Not even some fleas!
As puppies at play
Chase after a stick
And race tot heir masters
So lively and quick.
So out in the field
His canines all flew
Catching the Frisbees,
That St. Bernard threw.
And then in an instant
I heard at the door
The scratching and clawing
Of each little paw
As I pulled in my nose,
And was turning around
Through the door Sr. Bernard
Came in with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur
From his head to his tail,
His wood cask adorned
With an icing of hail:
A bag of chew-toys he had
Brought in with him
And his mouth was turned up in
What looked like a grin.
His eyes-how they twinkled
His ears flopped, how merry!
His coat shone like crystal,
His nose like a cherry!
His big floppy mouth
Was drawn up like a bow
And the fur on his chin
Was a white as the snow:
The stump of a bone
He held tight in his teeth,
And his collar encircled
His neck like a wreath:
He had a large face
And a furry round belly
That shook when he barked,
Like a bowl full of jelly.
He was fluffy and plump,
A big, cuddly old pooch
And I laughed when I saw him
And gave him a smooch.
A wink of his eye and
A wag of his tail;
We knew right away
We'd have homes without fail.
He howled not a howl, but
Went straight to his deed
And took down our leashes
That we soon would need.
He opened the door,
And families stood there,
With children, all smiling,
And much love to share.
He leapt to his sled
To his team cage a call,
And away they all flew
As if chasing a ball.
But I heard him exclaim
As he chewed on his bone:
HAPPY DOG-MAS TO ALL
AND TO ALL A GOOD HOME!

Please Welcome Marlene
Written by a CP Intakes volunteer
Please welcome Marlene to the Col Potter family! Marlene was picked up as a stray and no one came to re-claim her -- such a sad story for this little 9-11 year old girl who had to spend too many days at the shelter ...... waiting. Unfortunately, she picked up kennel cough and will need to get over it before she can have her much needed dental. She’s very friendly, despite not feeling that well, and looking forward to that time when she can be someone’s best friend again.
Marlene is named after a very special CP volunteer as a big thank you for all the cairns she’s helped over the years!

Holiday Safety Tips for Pets
Wellness Blog
1. The Christmas Tree
A holiday tree can look more like a playground than a holiday decoration to a curious cat. To keep pets safe, be sure to anchor your holiday tree well so it doesn’t tip and fall.
2. Decorative Dangers
Pets may think tinsel and ornaments are toys – but when ingested, these holiday decorations can obstruct the digestive tract, causing serious health concerns. Ornaments and tinsel should be kept out of your pet’s reach at all times.
3. Gift Safety
Avoid giving pets toys that can be chewed into pieces. There is always the risk of pieces of a chewed toy becoming lodged in a pet’s esophagus or digestive tract. Although cats love yarn and ribbon, the long fibers can also cause intestinal blockages. When giving gifts to furry family members, it’s best to stick to safer toys (like kongs and balls) and healthy treats .
4. Festive Plants
Some holiday plants, when ingested, can cause health problems for pets. Avoid decorative plants such as holly, mistletoe, poinsettias and lilies – which can be the most dangerous. Even pine needles, when ingested, can wreck havoc in your pet’s intestines – so keep your pet away from fallen needles.
5. Human Food
Holiday foods, including fatty meats (especially roasts with bones), gravy, spicy foods, sweets and chocolate should all be kept far away from pets. Make sure to keep your pets away from the holiday table and unattended plates of food.
6. Holiday Beverages
Alcoholic beverages are dangerous when ingested by pets and should never be left on tables that are within your pet’s reach.
7. Holiday Lighting
Don’t leave lighted candles unattended. Be sure candles are placed on a stable surface and always put the flames out prior to leaving a room.
8. Reduce Stresses
The excitement of the holiday season can be stressful for pets, triggering possible illness and intestinal upset. If you’re hosting any holiday parties, make sure pets have a safe place to retreat in your house. And make sure they are wearing current I.D. in case they escape out a door when guests come and go.
9. Tree Water
Standing/stagnant tree water can grow bacteria (making it unsafe for pets to drink) – so it’s best to keep your pet away from the trees so they are not tempted to sip the water.
10. Poison Control
If you believe that your pet might have eaten something toxic, call your veterinarian and Animal Poison Control Center immediately.

Please Welcome Trudy Lou!
Contributed by a CP Intakes Team Volunteer
Ms. Trudy Lou was a former puppy mill mama who found freedom and a home thanks to Col. Potter some time ago. Due to a change in the family, Trudy Lou once again finds herself with Col. Potter hoping to find a forever home. Trudy Lou is a light wheaten girl, 6-7 years old and somewhat timid with the changes. She has a distinguishing feature due to an untreated ear infection while at the mill. Her little right ear has it's own unique formation that adds to Trudy Lou's special character.
After a long transport, Trudy Lou will be heading to her foster home shortly to enjoy the comforts of home for the holidays.

CHRISTMAS AND HOLIDAY PLANT WARNINGS FOR PETS!
Written by a CP Volunteer
• Holly (Ilex sp.)
This plant, commonly found around Christmas time, can cause intense vomiting and diarrhea. Mental depression can also occur.
• Amaryllis (Amaryllis spp)
Ingestion can result in vomiting, diarrhea, depression, lack of appetite, tremors, drooling and abdominal pain.
This plant, another Christmas plant, can also cause significant vomiting and diarrhea. In addition, this plant has been associated with difficulty breathing, slowed heart rate, collapse and, if a lot is ingested, death has occurred. Some animals may even show erratic behavior and possible hallucinations.
• Christmas cactus, Thanksgiving cactus, Easter cactus (Schlumbergera or Zygocactus)
Flowers and plants add beauty to any holiday, and they make great holiday gifts. But if your family includes pets, you may want to learn which plants are safe and which ones you need to avoid.
The last thing you need on this busy holiday is an unexpected visit to the local veterinary hospital for an unexpected emergency. So today, I want to remind you a little about common holiday plants that can cause problems.
Here are some of the most common holiday plants to avoid. Remember that ingesting bulb plants often cause the most severe illnesses.

• Poinsettia (Euphorbia)
This plant can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach and sometimes vomiting. It has a low level of toxicity and is overrated as a toxic plant. Many people consider it basically non-toxic.
• Christmas cactus, Thanksgiving cactus, Easter cactus (Schlumbergera or Zygocactus)
In dogs, if large quantities of this plant are ingested, vomiting, possibly with blood, diarrhea, possibly with blood and mental depression have been reported. With small ingestions, typically there are no signs of toxicity. These plants are considered low toxicity plants.
If you bring plants into your home, make sure they are in a location inaccessible by your dog. They can all cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset if ingested. After all, we certainly don't need any trips to the emergency clinic and unexpected medical expenses this time of year!

Please Welcome Clifford!
Written by a CP Intakes volunteer
Clifford is a little 12 lb, 2-3 year old male cairn who should probably be named LUCKY! About a month ago, Intakes received a phone call from a woman who found a little cairn running loose on a very busy 4-lane road. She stopped traffic and got him into her car. He had on a collar and tags, so she assumed she would be able to locate his owner and return him. She tried all the recommended methods and after 2 weeks with no response, she asked if we could take him. On the day we were going to get him, his owner finally returned one of her calls and wanted him back. So she returned him. Case CLOSED!
Wrong! Last week his name showed up in a shelter search, so we checked with the shelter to see if it was the same little cairn. Sure enough, it was him. Found again running loose on that same busy road, but this time he was picked up by Animal Services. Since he’s microchipped, they had to hold him for 7 days to allow the owner enough time to reclaim him. They never showed up! So he’s finally safe in the arms of Col. Potter and very lucky he didn’t get hit by a car.
Welcome little boy! No more dodging traffic for you!

Welcome Mouse to Col. Potter!
Contributed by a CP Volunteer
Mouse’s life has not been an easy one. He was born to a back yard breeder and sold to a family when he was 2 years old. His new Owner noticed he had a very bad limp, which turned out to be an unhealed fractured hip. Mouse had surgery to correct his hip, which was successful; today he can run and play as if nothing was ever wrong. Mouse’s family was not equipped to deal with a healthy, active male cairn.

He found himself outside all day while his Owners were at work, only to be brought in a night for dinner and bed in a screened in porch, he was never allowed in the house. Not surprisingly, Mouse never house trained. Realizing this situation was not ideal for Mouse, his Owner’s contacted CP. Our intakes team tried to work with Mouse’s Owner to house train him, but it proved too much for the Owners. Once again, CP was contacted, and today, Mouse became our newest CP kid. I’d like everyone to give Mouse a warm CP welcome.

I rescued a human today...
I wish I knew who the author of this is but I don't.
I am sending it to all who love animals and hope that you will do the same.
I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY
Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels.
I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.
I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.
As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage.
I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today.
Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.
As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.
She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.
Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.
A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.
Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.
I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor.
So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors.
So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

Mocha brings new energy to CP
Written by a CP Intakes volunteer
Little Mocha was turned in to a shelter by her owner. The owner was moving in with their parents and couldn’t take care of her any longer.
Mocha is estimated to be 3 years old and described as VERY friendly, full of energy and good with other dogs. She’ll be spending the week at the vet and head to her foster home this coming weekend.
Welcome to Col. Potter, little one!

Darcy bounds into CP!
Written by a CP Intakes volunteer
Darcy, a 13lb, 3 year old bundle of energy, was surrendered by his owner to a local shelter. He was deemed adoptable but with qualifications: “Adopter has to have knowledge and experience with the breed and no children”. It seems Darcy was very nervous in the shelter environment. The shelter explained that a small and appealing dog such as Darcy would normally have been adopted quickly, but with these qualifications, Darcy had been at the shelter for quite a while, and his future was undetermined.
Col. Potter, of course, took him in because CP understands the terrier temperament. Please give Darcy a warm CP welcome!

Welcome Mork & Mindy!
Written by a CP Intakes volunteer
Remember back a few years when a new television program debuted with an unusual character - Mork from Ork? One of the first questions asked regarding Mork and his egg was "What is it?" Ironically when Mork and Mindy arrived at a local shelter, the shelter director looked at each dog and asked "What is it?" The answer: cairn terriers!!! The shelter promptly got these two cairns to a groomer for baths and haircuts. It's hard to imagine how much better they had to feel after their makeovers!
Mork and Mindy's story is sad but true. They had an owner who loved them very much since they were pups. Then their owner became ill and as time went on grew progressively worse. The owner was unable to properly care for Mork and Mindy but couldn't part with them. Eventually other family members had the sad job of separating the owner from her cairns as the owner's health failed. Wanting a new family for the cairns they were taken to a 'safe' place hoping for the best. Fate was watching over these two cairns that day. CP's rescue team had recently been in touch with this shelter about another cairn. The shelter let the rescue team know that cairn had been adopted but there were two more who just arrived! CP's rescue team was on the case monitoring the two cairns until it was time for rescue.
