Please welcome Gunney!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

This adorable little 3 year old boy got dropped off by his family at an overcrowded shelter yesterday. The shelter called us with an urgent plea for help. Fortunately, we were able to get him. The shelter describes him as a happy, friendly boy that doesn’t particularly like cats (he barks at them), seems fine with other dogs and lived in a home with children.

Welcome Gunney! We’ll find you a new family!

Welcome Bocce the Benissimo!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Bocce ball is a popular game in Italy. Bocce ball is played in a sand pit--every cairn's dream. When we think of Bocce ball games we envision fun, laughter and friendly competition. This fits our newest CP boy like a glove! He's friendly, makes you laugh and is always ready to compete in a game involving every cairn's version of a bocce ball--the tennis ball.

Bocce is a 2 year old owner surrender. He's a well built sturdy reddish wheaten cairn who's good looking but doesn't know it. He knows sit, sit pretty, lay down, rollover and rings a bell when he needs to go potty. He also likes children, people, other dogs and lap time. He loves to get groomed too--no really, he does!! He's known nothing but love and good times.

So why is he in rescue, the inquiring mind would ask? Rescue is for all dogs not just the hard luck cases which we see all too often. Sometimes life changes and choices have to be made no one would have envisioned. Life can throw you a curve ball, well, in this case it's a BOCCE ball!

Please welcome the beautiful boy Bocce!

Silent Heroes: Honoring War Dogs This Memorial Day

Animal Planet Daily Treat blog

In honor of Memorial Day, my esteemed colleagues Lulu Schmoo, Zazou & Kiki here at The Daily Treat would like to recognize all the incredibly brave, selfless men, women and service & military dogs that have given their lives for our country.

No Longer Left Behind

War dogs have been silently fighting for on our behalf for decades and up until around the year 2000, most of these brave and dedicated souls were actually left behind, literally abandoned -- by the military despite having loyally loved and protected their soldiers in battle. In fact, after the Vietnam War, only 204 of an estimated 4,900 war dogs returned to the United States, according to military dog organizations.

Thankfully, this practice changed in the year 2000 when President Clinton signed a law allowing the dogs to be adopted. Last year, 338 dogs were adopted, including 34 that were given to police departments or other government agencies.

Military Dog Adoptions on the Rise

In fact, just this week MSNBC released a story indicating that life after the military is looking brighter than ever for America's four-legged veterans since one of their own helped in the mission to kill Osama bin Laden. War dog organizations say the number of people asking about adopting retired military canines has risen dramatically since the mission involving Cairo, the Navy SEALs dog tasked with tracking anyone who tried to escape from bin Laden's compound and alerting the special operations forces to anyone approaching.

To learn more about these incredible heroes and their stories or to learn about how to adopt and/or support retired war dogs, visit USWarDogs.org or Military Working Dog Adoptions.

Jinty joins CP

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please Welcome Jinty to Col. Potter. She found herself living in a home with children who did not know how to respect her. Her mom tried her best to get the children to understand how important it was to respect and give a dog its space, but they were just to young to understand. The owner decided to contact CP for help.

Jinty is now in her foster dad's home ready to begin a new life. Please welcome her with open arms!

Kashtuk joins Col. Potter

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please give a warm welcome to Col. Potter's newest addition. Kashtuk is a Chumash Native American word meaning "eyes". Could this sweet 3 year old boy's beautiful eyes have helped save him? Or maybe it is his loving personality and the many kisses he lavishes on people? Representatives at the high kill shelter held this sweet boy two weeks beyond the normal 5 day hold period. Time was running short when CP learned about his situation.

Many thanks to CP's fast acting volunteer, Charlene M., who drove 3 hours in heavy traffic to rescue Kashtuk. After a week at the spa, Kashtuk will join his foster family.

Please Welcome Wendell!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

We have a new boy in our midst named Wendell! Wendell means "wanderer, seeker, or one who proceeds onward". Our Wendell is seeking a new forever home and proceeded to Col. Potter to help him with this mission. He's 7 years old (with a birthday approaching) and he has a lovely light wheaten coat and beautiful brown eyes. He is an owner surrender but only because his family wanted the best for him. From the moment he was in the hands of the Col. Potter volunteers he began charming them one by one. I kept hearing the words, very sweet, adorable, handsome, friendly and happy over and over. He's earned the title of Mr. Happy at his foster home already.

Now Wendell does have one slight flaw, one I'm sure many of you have experienced with a cairn or two. He's camera shy! So while his photo to all of you may not show all his handsome features, trust me, he is one handsome, suave cairn. Let's give a great big shout out to Wendell in his journey to a new forever home!

WELCOME A NEW BOY TO THE CP FAMILY!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

How many times have we heard the story of a little Cairn doomed to death through no fault of their own? We've heard all the stories and have heard all the reasons, or should we say excuses. The fact still remains that without Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network little Cairns like our newest boy would have no other options, no place of safety and most importantly no future.

This particular little boy is very special in the fact that he so parallels the life of the person he was named for - mid age, and facing sudden death. His name is a donated name from our Name a Cairn Program. The difference is this little boy now has a future and the chance to live out his life to the fullest.

Please help me welcome JR. He was picked up as a stray and is estimated to be about 5 years old. He was deemed unadoptable because he has what was described as an umbilical hernia and his skin and hair show the effects of flea dermatitis and allergy. Yes, he would have been Put To Sleep for two simple and easily fixed medical issues. JR is named in memory of Danielle and George's son who died suddenly and unexpectedly and far too young.

Remember, it is only through your support that Col. Potter is able to rescue little Cairns like JR. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Happy Mother's Day Poem - for 'moms' of furkids

Written by a CP Volunteer

To all of you who have children that are a bit hairier than others and walk on four paws!

This is for the mothers who have sat up all night with sick dogs in their arms, wiping up barf laced with edible and inedible things and saying 'It's okay baby, Mommy's here.'

Who have sat on the floor for hours on end soothing dogs who can't be comforted.

This is for all the mothers who show up at work with dog hair on their suits and poo bags in their purse, coat pocket, pants pocket and all other pockets.

For all the mothers who make their own dog food and treats.
And all the mothers who DON'T.

This for the mothers who help the new mothers deal with the loss of their litter. And the mothers who help them cope when they are given new homes.

This is for the mothers whose priceless art collections consists of ribbons and photos.

And for all the mothers who froze their buns off, sweated gallons and swatted away bees to watch their precious prance into a ring and achieve 2nd place and then jump around as though they had won best in show.

This is for all the mothers who yell at their dogs in the park and firmly tug the leash to get their attention. And for all the mothers who count to ten because they realize how animal abuse happens.

This is for all the mothers who go to the special pet stores to collect the proper treats, food and toys no matter that it take 3 stops and 50 stoplights.

This is for all the mothers who taught their dogs to sit, come and stay.
And for all the mothers who opted for sit.

This is for all the mothers who teach their dogs agility and obedience and actually understand that it needs to be FUN!

This is for every mother who automatically sucks in their breath when she can't see a leash on a dog in the non-fenced front yard. Then relaxes when she realizes that the dog is sitting on it.

This is for all the mothers who took their dog to the vet assuring them that there would be no needles only to be told they need a blood sample.

For all the mothers whose dog has gone missing and was returned because she had the forethought to have chip put between its shoulders.

What makes a good Mother anyway? Is it patience? Compassion? Ever available treats? The ability to answer the door, hold back the dog and deal with a phone call all at the same time?

Or is it in her heart?

Is it the ache you feel when you walk out the door to your job every Monday through Friday knowing that 2 eyes are boring into your back?

The jolt that takes you from sleep to dread when you hear the sounds of heaving at 2:00am?

Years later, the guilt that won't go away when you have no other choice but to put your friend down?

The emotions of motherhood are universal and so this is for you all. For all of us...

Hang in there. In the end we can only do the best we can. Tell them everyday that we love them. And never stop being a Mom.

Carolina and her puppies are playing outside!

Contributed by Carolina and her puppies' foster Mom Once Carolina was ready to wean her puppies, she's seen and heard them in the house, but she's not had any desire to be with them, I guess figuring she's done her job, now they're someone else's responsibility. She acts just like a big puppy herself. Here they are out in the yard romping together. They are all enjoying their new lives in freedom.

Please Welcome Preston

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

This darling little boy has suffered with itchy skin problems for many, many years--and he’s only 6! His previous owner was unable to take care of his needs and contacted us for help. Fortunately we were able to say YES!

Preston is reportedly housebroken, good with kids, other dogs, and cats. He loves playing fetch and will roll over for a belly rub.

So welcome little Preston – your foster mom will give you all the TLC you need and deserve.

Tolstoy, our newest CP intake

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Tolstoy was found by an elderly couple roaming around a cemetery on a lonely country road far outside of town. They vetted and loved Tolstoy, but already having several dogs themselves, they decided they just could not keep one more. CP was called, and Tolstoy was handed over to us this weekend. He is reportedly good with other dogs, housebroken, plays fetch and will release to you, walks nicely on a leash, bright and learns quickly.

Let’s all give Tolstoy a warm welcome.

Diamond Foods Pet Food Recall

Lowcountry Dog Magazine

by Leah England on Monday, May 7th, 2012 at 1:20pm | filed in Health and Wellness Local News National News

Last week, Diamond Foods issued a voluntary recall of several lines of dry kibble product distributed throughout several states, including South Carolina. The recalled product was manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 and is being pulled due to potential Salmonella contamination at a Gaston, SC plant. Affected brands include:
Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul
Country Value
Diamond
Diamond Naturals
Premium Edge
Professional
4Health
Taste of the Wild
Canidae
Natural Balance
Wellness
Apex
Kirkland Signature
To determine if their pet food is recalled, consumers should check the production code on their bag. If the code has a "2" or "3" in the 9th position AND an "X" in the 10th or 11th position, the product is affected by the recall. The best-before dates for the recalled products are December 9, 2012 through April 7, 2013.
Diamond Pet Foods apologizes for any issues this may cause consumers and their pets. Pet owners who are unsure if the product they purchased is included in the recall, or who would like replacement product or a refund, may contact Diamond Pet Foods via a toll free call at 1-866-918-8756, Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. EST. Consumers may also go to a special website, www.diamondpetrecall.com, for more information and for specific codes for which line of each brand is being recalled. The company is working with distributors and retailers to ensure all affected product is removed from shelves.
*Note -- We aren't sure why Wellness isn't listed on the Diamond Foods site. Perhaps they have not updated yet, as LCDM only received the email from Wellness regarding the pulled product on Sunday, May 6th 2012. Wellness told us that the voluntary recalled product from their line is: Wellness Complete Health® Super5Mix® Large Breed Puppy, 15 and 30 lb. bags and 5 oz. samples with best by dates of JAN 9 2013 through JAN 11 2013. No other recipes, sizes or WellPet brands of food are impacted by this voluntary recall.

Tummy Aches in Your Pet

A tummy ache is never fun for people, but it can be life threatening
for your pet.
“It's not uncommon for most animals to have upset stomachs and vomit
from time to time, but there's usually a simple reason,” says Dr. Deb
Zoran, associate professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary
 Medicine; Biomedical Sciences.
Vomiting may be caused by a hairball in the stomach or small intestine
or by other foreign material, such as plants, rocks or bones. Diet could
 also be a cause.
"If a dog or cat has had a change of diet or if it has eaten spoiled food,
it can result in nausea or vomiting," adds Zoran. "Just like when humans
get food poisoning, the symptoms usually go away within 24 hours.
The digestive tract is cleared and whatever was causing the problem is
gone. However, if the animal hasrepeated vomiting, won't eat, or the
symptoms continue for more than24 hours, the animal needs to see a
veterinarian immediately."
Zoran says frequent pet vomiting can be a difficult problem to pinpoint.
"The causes are numerous - food allergies, infection or inflammation in the
intestinal tract, foreign objects that obstruct the bowel, ulcers, liver or
kidney failure, diabetes, cancer - the list can go on and on," says Zoran.
If the animal has been vomiting for more than 24 hours, the most serious
problems are dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. The animal has lost
body fluids and they need to be replaced right away, then the source of the
problem can be examined.
X-rays can often detect the source of the vomiting, and as with humans,
barium liquid can be administered to the pet to outline the digestive
tract.

Other tests that may be necessary include ultrasound, blood work, and
an endoscopic examination to determine the problem.
"One key question is, does the cause of the vomiting come from inside
the G.I. (gastrointestinal) tract or is it hidden elsewhere in the animal?"
Zoran adds. "If the problem is not in the G.I. tract, it can be harder to detect."
If the pet owner detects blood in any food the animal has vomited, that
should be a warning sign that something is not right.
"If blood is present, it's a serious problem and possibly a life-threatening
 problem," says Zoran.
"Unfortunately, it may not look like blood because the stomach acids will
digest any blood present and the blood may look something like coffee
grounds. The best answer is, if you don't think it looks like food, the
animal needs medical attention as soon as possible," says Zoran.
Other signs that should alarm pet owners: if the animal vomits every
time it eats, vomits multiple times per day, or if the animal won't eat at
all and appears to be weak and depressed.
"All of these are warning signs that something serious is wrong and the
pet needs medical help immediately," says Zoran.
Frequent or persistent vomiting in any animal is not normal. If the animal
has been vomiting excessively, it's essential that it sees a veterinarian.
