REMOVAL OF DOG TOY FROM PETCO SHELVES PROMPTED BY KIAH-TV NEWSFIXER

KIAH-TV NEWSFIXER
Published 02/24/2012 - 9:48 a.m. CST

HOUSTON, TX - An investigation by KIAH-TV’s “The NewsFixer” has led to a removal of a dog toy that threatened the health of a Houston canine. The toy “Snuggling Furry Friend,” sold as a private brand under the Petco label, was found to contain traces of Trimethyl Benzene, Arsenic, Cadmium and Lead, along with Naphthalene, the main ingredient in moth balls.
The toxins were detected in the Petco toy by an independent laboratory after a NewsFix viewer, Mark Smith of Houston, told the station his Chow Mix “Charlet” became sick after first chewing on the toy in December 2011. After inquiries by “The NewsFixer,” Petco agreed to pay for Smith’s veterinary expenses. Petco said it would also test all similar toys sold in its retail outlets for toxic substances.

Petco representative Lisa Epstein said, "We did, in fact, direct our stores yesterday (2/23) to remove the Lambswool Tug with Squeaker Dog Toy from our shelves, pending the results of random sample tests that will be conducted and analyzed at an accredited laboratory. The decision to take this action was out of an abundance of caution – and it is not a product recall."

“We’re pleased we could help one of our loyal viewers,” said NewsFix News Director Gary Jaffe, “And we’re proud that ‘The NewsFixer’ has continued to be an effective and relevant investigative force in the community.”

Previous “NewsFixer” investigations have revealed wasted resources by the City of Houston, and have prompted hastened municipal cleanup in residential areas.

Landers lands in CP

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Landers was a stray that had been wondering around a TX neighborhood. A kind woman there began been feeding him. She tried to find his owner but, with no tags or microchip, it was impossible. She put up flyers, made calls and put him on the internet, but no one came forward to claim him. She contacted Col. Potter but then Landers went missing for several days and we thought maybe something had happened to him. Thankfully, something guided him back to this kind woman. She and her neighbor were able to get him in a crate. He was then taken to meet up with CP volunteer who took him to the vet.

Landers is estimated to be 7 years old. He will soon be on his way to his foster home where he will be made ready for his very own forever home where he will be safe, have a nice warm bed, and never have to worry about where his next meal will come from.

A big welcome to Landers!!

Cormac the Royal has arrived!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Our newest Col. Potter boy is Cormac, a 7 year old owner surrender. He was a loved family member but due to changing dynamics, rescue was necessary. He's a handsome wheaten boy with a regal look and stance. A good belly rub is enjoyed when he's not attending to royal duties.

Cormac is a name with an Irish-Gaelic origin with more than one history. Here's the history of the name that I thought was the most fitting: From old Irish corbmac "son of the charioteer." Cormac Mac Airt was probably the most famous of the ancient kings of Ireland. As a ruler of Tara, the seat of the high kings of Ireland, he was famous for his wise, true and generous judgments. Cormac owned the wonderful gold cup given to him by the sea-god Manannan Mac Lir. If three lies were spoken over it, it would break in three; three truths made it whole again. Cormac used this cup during his kingship to distinguish falsehood from truth and when he died, the cup vanished.

Today, Cormac is holding the gold cup high so that all cairns can see it as a beacon to guide them to Col. Potter and a good fun life.

Please Welcome Cormac!

Nim steps into CP!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please give a warm welcome to Col. Potter's new boy, Nim. This four year old wheaten boy was surrendered to a shelter; his family reported they were moving and could not afford to take care of him. The shelter saw his typical cairn boy attitude and knew that his best chance for successful adoption was through breed rescue. They contacted CP for help.

He contracted Kennel Cough while at the shelter, and the shelter was willing and able to treat him and hold him during that time. Once cleared from the infection, he was picked up by our CP volunteer. He will have his spa treatment this week and then head to his foster home Saturday.

While we know not all shelters can hold and treat a sick dog, we have proof that there are some that go above and beyond to help those in their care. This shelter did a great job on behalf of Nim. For that we are grateful!

Welcome, Nim!!

Welcome Ruthie!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please help welcome Col. Potter's new girl, Ruthie. This sweet, fun loving 10 year old lady was surrendered to a vet when the family claimed she 'no longer fits our lifestyle, so please euthanize her'. The vet refused, thankfully. Ruthie was surrendered to the vet, and fostered by one of the staff. She contacted CP in hopes that we could help this cairn.

Ruthie may be 10, but from all accounts has the energy and spunk of a much younger dog. She loves to play with toys, is curious and friendly.

Thanks to all who helped her along her journey into CP.

Welcome, Ruthie!

Introducing Shroder!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

This adorable little male cairn found himself in a shelter and no one came looking for him. So as of this past weekend, he’s a Col Potter kid!

Shroder is estimated to be about 2 years old and seems like the typical, high energy young cairn. Our volunteer who picked him up from the shelter and delivered him to the vet said he traveled very well in the car but, when they arrived at the vet’s office, he decided to growl and confront a stuffed toy on the window sill. He was probably telling that toy that he’s ready to PLAY!

Welcome little Shroder!

Hopper rides into CP

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Remember Easy Rider? The carefree ride of easy going guys just seeing what was out there? One of the actors in this classic film was Dennis Hopper. Poor guy just didn't always know what was going on or where he was going. Col. Potter now has it's own carefree, easy going guy who isn't sure what happened. Our Hopper is a mellow guy who lost his home when family moves didn't include him. He's already cruised into his foster home, kicked up his paws and settled right in.

Hopper is a handsome wheaten/silver dude looking for a cool ride to his forever home. Please welcome Hopper!!

McCartney rock-n-rolls for Col. Potter

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Remember what happened on February 9, 1964? That was the day the Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. American teenage girls were never the same! One Beatle had those come hither, puppy dog eyes. Oh those eyes!! Those eyes along with the dark hair and boyish grin captivated the female population far and wide.

Yesterday a short (cairns aren't tall) dark and handsome 8 year old cairn boy with captivating eyes joined Col. Potter. Check out the mahogany highlights on the beautiful black brindle cairn! His picture only hints at his charisma.

McCartney is a very loved owner surrender. His owner was getting up in years, as we all do, and found it more and more difficult to care for him. Everyone who knew him was in love with this guy. As part of the intake process, we talk to the cairn's vet. The entire vet's office was smitten with him and were his personal fan club. This boy was loved by all in his life. He is a cairn who likes to give kisses. He loves belly rubs too. Being an only cairn, McCartney is very happy to discover his foster home has a girl cairn who he is already trying to impress.

Our very own CP McCartney is making his official rocking debut today! Hold down the noise - Please welcome McCartney!

Please welcome Varick

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please give a warm welcome to CP's Varick! This sweet 10 year old wheaten gentleman comes to CP through no fault of his own. His family had a crisis that prevented him from remaining in the home. Luckily for him, they contacted CP and did not take him to a shelter. He has made a quick adjustment to his foster home, and is happily looking toward the next part of his journey to a happy forever.

Welcome Varick!

Introducing Engelhardt

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please give a warm welcome to CPs new boy, Engelhardt. This amazingly sweet 5 year old wheaten boy comes to us needing safe haven from young, unsupervised children. At some point in his home, he suffered an injury, most probably when the toddler fell on him as reported by his owner. Despite his neck injury, pain, and imbalance, he is reported to be the 'sweetest dog I have met' by his treating vet!

When Intakes was made aware of Engelhardt, the owner gave us only hours before he would either take him to the local high-kill shelter, or to the vet to be euthanized. Why, you ask? Because Engelhardt had the nerve to growl when the toddler fell on him, and then again (with his injury and in pain already) when another child pulled his tail and hair.

The vet told us that there is no way the owner was unaware of an issue with Engelhardt. No way. Knowing this, not getting medical help, not telling us, he was handed over. In pain for an unknown amount of time. Had we NOT been able to get to him before the time limit, the high kill shelter would have euthanized him given his medical issues and his status as Owner Surrender.

I want to thank our volunteer who responded immediately to my plea for help to save this boy. We had only 6 hours to get him to safety. Despite a full schedule dealing with her own sick cairn, she responded IMMEDIATELY with 'let me know what needs to be done'. She found a local friend to pull and hold while she tended her own cairn, then she drove an hour one way to pick him up and then back home to get him to the vet. Today she will drive him to the airport for his flight, working to do this despite personal responsibilities, appointments, and commitments. It's volunteers like this that help to restore my faith in humankind, after dealing with owners like this!

Welcome, Engelhardt!! We are glad you are part of the CP family now.

Xylitol Toxicity in Dogs

Life with dogs

Xylitol is a sugar substitute in many products, most notable some sugar-free gums and flavored medications. Xylitol is safe for people (and oddly, cats), but is very toxic to dogs (and probably ferrets).

If your dog has or may have ingested xylitol, call your veterinary team and have your pet examined right away. Xylitol, even in small amounts, causes an over-production of insulin, which causes a horrendous sugar crash, or, more accurately, hypoglycemia.

hyp/o – low

glyc/o – sugar

-emia – blood

Signs of Hypoglycemia in Dogs

lethargy (abnormal tiredness)
shaking
ataxia (loss of balance)
inability to stand
seizures

Do not wait for signs to develop! Insulin release and resulting hypoglycemia begin almost immediately. Left unchecked, very low blood sugar or liver failure secondary to xylitol toxicity can be fatal. With treatment, the prognosis is usually good. The sooner a xylitol toxicity is treated, the better the prognosis.

Conclusion

You are home from the veterinary hospital with a recovering pet, considerably poorer, a bit shaken by the close call and anxious for the recheck appointment, still weeks away, in which you will hopefully learn that there was no long term liver damage. You rid your home of all xylitol-containing products and warn friends and family of the dangers of xylitol toxicity in dogs.

Alternate Ending

You finish an article on xylitol toxicity and think, “Hmm, that was interesting…I guess.” You rid your home of all xylitol-containing products and warn friends and family of the dangers of xylitol toxicity in dogs.

TWO NEW LITTLE GIRLS COME IN OUT OF THE COLD AND FIND THE SUNSHINE WITH CP!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

Many of us are fortunate enough to be able to head south during the winter to the warmth and sunshine. Others can at least get away on a vacation for a little while to a tropical location. For many furkids, they don't have the option or luxury of even having shelter during the winter. They must withstand the elements, no matter what mother nature throws at them during the winter and can only hope they can survive until spring. I'm sure all of them would really enjoy a little Florida Sunshine just about now! Col. Potter may not be able to send them to Florida, but it can at least get them out of the cold, snow and ice and into nice, warm, loving homes ... not exactly Florida Sunshine, but it will feel like it to them!

Two adorable little girls now find themselves out of the winter cold and into the Sunshine that is CP!

Palmetto: Female, wheaten, 5 to 6 years old

Sarasota: Female, wheaten, 5 to 6 years old

We believe these two are sisters who have found the warmth of freedom together. Please help me welcome Florida Sunshine to CP!
