Trucker recently rolls into CP
Written by a CP Intakes volunteer
Please welcome Trucker. He's a 6 yr old owner surrender. Owner reported that he had 2 good buddies that passed and they in turn got two Dobermans. Neither the Dobermans or Trucker got along and he was very unhappy. The owner decided that Trucker needed a happier and better life so she contacted us for help.
He flew to his foster home to start his new journey. Please give him a warm welcome.

Please welcome Stoney and Poochie
Written by a CP Intakes volunteer
Please welcome Stoney and Poochie to Col. Potter. Stoney is a 5 year old male and Poochie is a 5 year old female. They are both described as well-loved, happy little cairns. Another case of family circumstances causing upheaval and the need to find a new place to call home. We know how well cairns adapt to whatever life throws at them and that they will happily adjust to their new lives. Welcome sweet kids!
Special thanks to 2 volunteers for helping get them safely and quickly to us – Sheri K and Harvard K.

Gecko sticks himself to Col. Potter
Written by a CP Intakes volunteer
This handsome little, 11 pound, 3-5 year old cairn was dropped off at a shelter by his family because of an accidental bite. The story was that he and another intact male got into a squabble over a female dog in heat, all living in the same house. The owner’s teenage daughter tried to break it up and got nipped on the knee – nothing serious, just a little nip. But, the shelter had to accept him and put him in quarantine for 10 days. After his jail time was up he only had two options – find a rescue to take him or euthanization. Fortunately, Col Potter was able to say YES and once again saved the life of a little cairn who had been unfairly tried and convicted.
The shelter staff reports that he’s a great little dog, super friendly, has no issues with other dogs, he loves walks and behaved perfectly getting a bath. Our wonderful volunteer who picked him up said “he is just precious – reminds me of the original Toto. He’s very calm and loves being held.”
Welcome to the family little Gecko!

Announcing Alban - recent intake
Written by a CP Intakes volunteer
Rescuers love to hear about responsible pet owners that research the breed they want to adopt and about the owners that consider adoption a lifetime commitment. Yet our hearts also go out to those responsible owners who find their circumstances dramatically changed such that their beloved pets are negatively impacted.
Alban's owner faced a change in circumstances that required longer working hours. This young pup was left home alone too many hours and he had limited walk, play and social time. His owner made the heartbreaking decision to find a home that could provide the more active and social life that Alban deserved.
Alban's owner researched to find the right rescue to help him and then approached Col. Potter for assistance. Alban arrived at his foster home and it won't be long before this boy is frolicking with the resident cairns.

Protect your Pet from Dognapping!
ASPCA blog
Pet theft is on the rise. The American Kennel Club, which has been tracking pet thefts since 2007, reported a 32% increase in dog thefts last year. While some animals are snatched from their yards or during home invasions, opportunistic thieves most commonly steal dogs left in cars or tied up outside stores. In the ASPCA’s hometown of New York City, dognappings skyrocket every summer as pet parents take advantage of nice weather to combine dog-walking with errand-running.
Protect Your Pet Avoid becoming a victim of this heartbreaking crime! When running errands around town, visit pet-friendly establishments or please leave your dog at home. Keep a close eye on your pet in designated off-leash areas, where he could become a target for criminals looking to make a quick buck. (Pet thieves often try to resell—or even hold for ransom—stolen dogs.)
Avoid leaving your pet unattended in the front yard, especially if your lawn is exposed or accessible. The same rules apply for leaving your pet tied up outside a store. In addition to being vulnerable to theft and teasing, your dog might escape or get injured. Microchip your pet! Microchipping can often mean the difference between temporary and permanent separation from your furry loved one.

When was the last time you wormed your dog?
by Michael Gilday
Connecticut Dweller's Lament
Worms rob your dog of nutrients and make them feel terrible. When was the last time you wormed your dog? Chances are, it's been awhile. You may think your dog is free of intestinal parasites, but the reality is if it's been more than six months since you've had your dog wormed, they probably have worms. Dogs can get worms from a variety of sources. They can get tape worms by ingesting fleas, heart worms from mosquito bites, and they can get hookworms just by walking around outside (as hookworm larva nests in soil). And before you think worms are your dog's problem, remember many parasites are opportunistic and would be just as happy in your intestines as they are in your dog's.
The best defense, in this case, is a good offense in the form of regular de-worming. There are plenty of prescription strength de-wormers out there, as well as brands you can buy off pet supply websites or catalogs. Some vets won't prescribe the medication unless there's proof your dog has worms, while others encourage preventative de-worming twice a year.

Welcome, Kenna!
Written by a CP Intakes volunteer
Please welcome Col. Potter's Kenna, who recently joined our rescue family. This sweet, chubby girl is a 4 year old wheaten who is happy to be here. She was living with a family that realized they were not the best family to meet her needs. The family made the hard decision to reach out to rescue to see if a more appropriate home could be found. They were patient while all the details were worked out, knowing that she deserved a great life, not just a life.
Kenna will be working on her weight, getting her spa treatment to look her best, and looking for that perfect forever!
