him! Time was quickly running out, so Col. Potter to the rescue!
A big thank you to Charlene for answering the call (again) and quickly picking him up and delivering him to the vet for his spa treatment.

Kilo Honors a Hero at Col. Potter!
Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator
Kilo, a delightful 3 year old Wheaten Male |
Dogs
are very special creatures and fill so many roles in our world. Those
roles include companion, service dog, therapy dog, show dog, family member,
best friend, search and rescue dog, military dog, and
couch warmer. Some of our canine companions take on the very
serious role of police dog. These special dogs face danger day in and day
out with their human partners. When not on duty they spend time with
their partners and family. It's a 24 hour relationship, just like we have
with our dogs, only on a much more intense level.
In
1932 the state of Indiana
formed the ISP K-9 unit. These elite dogs worked, lived and breathed
side by side with the Indiana State Police. They were the best of the
best. On June 24th of this year, the ISP K-9 unit lost its' first canine
officer in the line of duty, Kilo. Even though he was wearing a bullet
proof vest, it wasn't enough. Kilo gave his life to save his handler and
other officers present. A memorial service attended by other canine
officers around the state was held for Kilo with full honors. Kilo was
pronounced 10-42... End of work.
A
young (3 years old), handsome Wheaten Cairn has joined Col. Potter and is named
in honor of Kilo. This young boy also experienced tragedy in his young
life. He was a well loved companion and life couldn't have been
better. He and his owner were inseparable - well, almost. Sadly,
Kilo's owner passed away, leaving him an orphan. What would become
of this young orphaned boy? Thanks to a Good Samaritan, Kilo was spared
the fate of a shelter and given a ride down the yellow brick road to Col.
Potter. He is already having a great time in his Foster Home and has
already been dubbed a “cool dude”. It's an honor to have this sweet Cairn
as part of the Col. Potter family.
Please welcome the honorable and fun KILO!

Kenny Keeps his age Secret at Col. Potter!
Written by a CP Intakes
Coordinator
Welcome Kenny!
Kenny, a friendly little
Black Brindle Male
|
Kenny
found himself in a rural shelter and no one came looking for him. The
shelter was looking for a rescue to take him, so Col. Potter stepped up.
The
shelter estimates Kenny to be a “senior”, but our CP volunteer who picked him
up said she doesn’t think so. We shall have to see what our vet thinks...
However, regardless of his age, Kenny is very lively, friendly, and just an all
around good boy!
Kenny is looking forward to his much needed Spa treatment! |

Marilynne Sits Pretty for Col. Potter!
Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator
Marilynne, a Beautiful 6 year old Black Brindle Female |
Our
newest adorable Col. Potter girl is a 6 year old Black Brindle named
Marilynne. She became an owner
surrender when lifestyle changes meant rescue was the path for this girl.
Marilynne is not real shy, not real bold, and she likes women and men as well
as dogs. No firm opinion on cats yet, but she thinks they might be
okay.
Marilynne
knows “Sit!” and will come when called. How fast she comes depends on the type of treat you have to offer!
This lady wants to be paid for her efforts, and she prefers chicken and cheese,
please! A little red wine would be great, but Cairns haven't figured out
how to pop the cork, so no wine for this girl! As smart as she is, that
cork better look out…
Marilynne
is looking forward to her new life and enjoying it even more than before.
She's very happy to be part of the Col. Potter family and looking forward to
all the good things Col. Potter has to offer.
A
big welcome to the cutie called Marilynne!

Picaboo! Col. Potter Sees You!
Written by a CP Intakes
Coordinator
Picaboo, a Darling 11 lb., approx. 4 year old Black Brindle Female |
This
darling little 11 lb., approximately 4 year old Cairn girl found herself in a
shelter and was down to her last few days before being euthanized. It’s
hard to believe no one was interested in adopting or rescuing her based on her
age and cuteness, but she is heartworm positive, so no one wanted her.
Col. Potter to the rescue!
And
what a rescue it turned out to be! We could not find any CP Volunteers
within a 50 mile radius of the shelter to pull her – and it’s not even located
in a remote area – just no one responded to our pleas for help. So
we reached out to other rescues for help and thankfully, Oklahoma Westie Rescue
jumped in willingly – not only to pull her but to transport her a good distance
to meet our very own faithful Volunteers, Mike and Lori R. Miss Picaboo (pronounced
“Peek-A-Boo”) spent
the night with them and is on her way to our vet this morning. Lori said
she is a very friendly little girl and that Mike is in “love” with her already!
Picaboo is Heartworm positive so will need treatment for several months |
She
will be undergoing heartworm treatment in her Foster home for the next few
months. If you would like to help little Picaboo on her road to recovery,
please consider donating to help with her medical expenses. Please send
your check with a note for Picaboo #5389 and mail it to:

Ferdinand Stops to Smell the Flowers at CP!
Contributed by CP's VP of
Intakes
Ferdinand, a handsome 6 year old Wheaten Male |
Most
Cairn lovers will agree that Cairns
can be a little "bull headed". They also like to stomp around,
snorting to show everyone just how tough they are. Never one to back away
from confrontation, or the lure of a good chase, our beloved Cairns are known
as earth dogs because of their passion for digging and the
"hunt". However, those of us that truly know and love Cairns
understand that inside they are, without a doubt, just lovers and not
fighters. Every Cairn loves to stop and smell the flowers along the Yellow Brick Road!
This
week, a very handsome Cairn found his way to the loving arms of Col. Potter when
he turned out to be a little too "bull headed" to suit his
family. We are pleased to present Ferdinand, a 6 year old male. Many
thanks to Monika R. for getting Ferdinand rounded up and for choosing to name
him after her great nephew. She also
shared a delightful clip of Disney's Ferdinand the Bull - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGTVRbpAuRo which
you may remember, or enjoy for the first time!
May
CP's Ferdinand have ample opportunity to smell the flowers along the way as he
journeys to a wonderful Forever Home!

Trust - A Deadly Disease
Author unknown
As
you now know, Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network was created because a special
Cairn Terrier was killed by a car. Please read this and remember to always keep
YOUR new special family member safe, in memory of the Colonel.
There
is a deadly disease stalking your dog, a hideous, stealthy thing just waiting
its chance to steal your beloved friend. It is not a new disease, or one for
which there are inoculations. The
disease is called "Trust".
You knew before you ever took your
puppy home that it could not be trusted. The breeder who provided you with this
precious animal warned you, drummed it into your head. Puppies steal, destroy
anything expensive left in their path, chase cats, take forever to house train,
and must never be allowed off lead!!
When
the big day finally arrived, heeding the sage advice of the breeder, you
escorted your puppy to his new home, properly collared and tagged, the lead
held tightly in your hand. At home, the
house was "puppy-proofed". Everything of value was stored in the
spare bedroom, garbage stowed on top of the refrigerator. Cats separated, and a
gate placed across the living room to keep at least one part of the house
puddle free. All the windows and doors had been properly secured, and signs
placed in all strategic points reminding all to "Close the door!"
Soon it becomes second nature to make
sure the door closes nine tenths of a second after it was opened and that it is
really latched. "Don't let the dog out" is your second most verbalized
expression. (The first is "NO!") You worry and fuss constantly,
terrified that your darling will get out and disaster will surely follow. Your friends comment about who you love most,
your family or the dog. You know that to relax your vigil for a moment might
lose him to you forever.
And so the weeks and months pass, with
your puppy becoming more civilized every day, and the seeds of trust are
planted. It seems that each new day brings less destruction, less breakage,
less leakage. Almost before you know it, your clumsy, wild puppy has turned
into an elegant, dignified friend. Now that he is a more reliable, sedate
companion, you take him more places. No longer does he chew the steering wheel
when left in the car. And darned if that cake wasn't' still on the table this
morning. And, oh yes, wasn't that the cat he was sleeping with so cozily on
your pillow last night?
At
this point you are beginning to become infected, the disease is spreading its
roots deep into your mind. And then one of your friends suggests obedience
classes, and, after a time, you even let him run loose from the car into the
house when you get home. Why not, he always runs straight to the door, dancing
a frenzy of joy and waits to be let in. And, remember: he comes every time he is
called. You know he is the exception
that disproves the rule. (And sometimes late at night, you even let him slip
out the front door to go potty and then right back in.)
Years pass-it is hard to remember why
you ever worried so much when he was a puppy. He would never think of running
out the door left open while you bring in the packages from the car. It would
be beneath his dignity to jump out the window of the car while you run into the
convenience store. And when you take him for those wonderful long walks at
dawn, it only takes one whistle to send him racing back to you in a burst of
speed when the walk gets too close to the highway. (He still gets in the
garbage cans, but nobody is perfect!)
This
is the time the disease has waited for so patiently. Sometimes it only has to
wait a year or two, but often it takes much longer. He spies the neighbor dog across the street,
and suddenly forgets everything he ever knew about not slipping outdoors,
jumping out windows or coming when called due to traffic. Perhaps it was only a
paper fluttering in the breeze, a squirrel, a passer-by, or even just the sheer
joy of running....
Stopped
in an instant. Stilled forever - your heart is broken at the sight of his still
beautiful body.
The
disease is trust. The final outcome: hit by a car.
Every morning my dog bounced around off
lead exploring. Every morning for seven years he came back when he was called.
He was perfectly obedient, perfectly trustworthy. He died fourteen hours after
being hit by a car.
Please do not risk your friend and your heart.
Save
the trust for things that do not matter.
Please read this every year on your
puppy's birthday, lest we forget.
Maury Makes it to Col. Potter!

Welcome Maury!
Maury, a Sweet 2-4 year old Wheaten Male |
Please
give a warm Welcome to CP Maury!
Maury
joined Col. Potter after having some difficulty with being adopted to a
non-terrier family. When he was returned
after only two days, the shelter knew a breed specific Rescue was his best
chance, so they reached out to Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network.
Maury
is a 15 pound Wheaten boy, estimated to be 2-4 years old. So far, all reports are that he is a very sweet, fun loving, typical Cairn.

Rescued:four years later : Foster BG is 'just a dog' now
Written by Guinness' former foster Mom
Guinness, affectionately nicknamed Foster BG and Snickers while he was our foster dog lived with us for nine months. He was 4 1/2 years old when he came to us and we helped to prepare him for life outside of a commercial breeding facility. He was crate trained, house trained, discovered toys and the company of cairns and people. He was very agile and we quickly learned that he was an escape artist with the ability to jump very high. In June of 2010, he was matched and he went to live with his new 'Mom' who has shared his new life with me through updates over the years. She tells us he is still quite a jumper and can get on top of her kitchen island, some things never change.
Fast forward three years and she brought Guinness back to where we live to help cheer her on in a race at the beach. She invited me to come and see him again and I think we all wondered what our reunion would be like.
I am happy to say that he is a well adjusted, friendly guy who lets children pet him and isn't phased by runners or strangers. He was friendly to me but I was one of his Mom's friends now.

If you would like to see how far he has come, you can click this link to see the stories and videos of him when he was a Col. Potter foster - officially named Bubba Gump but we called him Snickers.
This is the story of rescue. A sad or difficult beginning doesn't mean that a dog can't thrive with a second chance. Just ask Guinness.

Barton Tips the Hat to Col. Potter!
Contributed by CP's VP of

Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network -- the name is synonymous throughout the rescue world with integrity, caring, and compassion, and is generally known as being one of the very best Rescue groups. Every once in awhile, it is especially gratifying to get validation from sources that we don't generally work with very much. Most show breeders are able to, and prefer to, find homes for their Cairns themselves, where they can do the screening of the prospective home and insure they can choose just the right home for their much loved Cairn when they retire them. It's when one of them come to Col. Potter seeking our assistance in finding a home for one of their Cairns that it hits you just how respected this organization truly is.

Bumby & Hadley on a New Career Path with CP!
Contributed by CP's VP of
Intakes
You
know what they say: 60 is the new 50, 50 is the new 40, and 40 is the new
30!!! Well, two little girls who have spent their lives as
"working" girls have just had that all change. They haven't
been used to many of the luxuries in life, nor have they been spoiled, pampered
Cairn Princesses - until now!
These
beautiful young women are currently enjoying a full spa treatment, with the
works -- hair, nails, facial masks, massage -- well maybe not quite all of that! But, we are
quite certain these two girls will emerge feeling younger and more beautiful
than they ever have in their lives!
Please
help us welcome Hadley and Bumby! Both of them are 8 years old, but we
think that 8 may be the new 6 for them!!!
Col.
Potter is still desperately in need of Foster Homes. Please consider
getting involved, helping a Cairn on the journey to a new life. Look around and ask yourself, “What's one
more crate and one more bowl?” Without Foster Homes, we can't
help girls like Bumby and Hadley start life anew, no matter what their
ages. If you have thought about it., now would be a great time to get off
the sidelines and get into the game - the Foster Home game!!!
If you
are an Approved Foster Home and able to take a Foster now, please let us
know. If you are not a Foster Home, please consider applying to become
one!
Enjoy
your spa treatment, Bumby and Hadley!
Please Consider being a CP Volunteer!
