Aubrey Finds a Safe Haven at Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Aubrey, a sweet approximately 5 year old Wheaten Female

Please welcome little Miss Aubrey to Col. Potter……

Aubrey was found as a stray by a young woman.  She was a matted mess and covered with fleas.   The young woman took her to a vet for a microchip scan and quick check-up and then posted her on Craigslist, looking for a new home or rescue for her.   The vet exam revealed she was heartworm positive and it was recommended that the growth on her gums be removed and biopsied.   The young woman could not afford the recommended procedures, and was very thankful when the Col. Potter Rescue Team contacted her offering our assistance.

This little girl is estimated to be 5 years old and weighs 13 lbs.   Our vet removed the mass and sent it out to pathology.   However, he feels it maybe a benign growth called an Epulis -- but the report will tell us for sure what it is/was.   And her confirming heartworm test indicates she’s a Stage 1.

Aubrey is reportedly very friendly, housebroken, and good with other dogs!

Please think good thoughts for this little girl for a good pathology report.   AND, if you can help with the costs of Aubrey’s surgery and heartworm treatment, please send a donation to:

Pip Pops Up at Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Pip, a delightful 1.5 year old Wheaten Male

Please say hello to Pip, a delightful little Wheaten Cairn boy, only 1 1/2 years old, who was found as a stray and ended up in a shelter.  Pip is said to be very friendly and energetic - does that sound familiar!

Pip is enjoying his time at the vet's and will soon be moved to his Foster Home.  He will be ready for adoption soon.

His name is donated through our Name a Rescue Cairn Program by Susan R, in memory of Pippin, her very first Cairn.  Pippin was a wonderful boy and loved very much, and we wish the same for our own little Pip.

Welcome Pip!

Quixote’s Possible Dreams at Col. Potter!

Contributed by CP's VP of Intakes & a CP Intakes/Foster Volunteer

Quixote, a handsome 8 year old Dark Brindle Male

The following introduction was written by a very special Col. Potter volunteer - Kathy H.  She has been the first contact with CP for many a little Cairn joining our family and, again this week, Kathy showed our newest family member love for the first time in his life.  You can see the distant look in his eyes and how he won't make eye contact with anyone or the camera.  Kathy chose his name and agreed to write his introduction.  It's long, but so very heartfelt and poignant…

~

Imagine spending your youth, your adolescence, and most of your adulthood in a dark and dank place, nothing for protection from the cold in the Winter or from the heat in the Summer.  No comfort in any form, no medical attention to your sores, little interaction of any kind, with just enough food and water to keep you alive.  You know there's something else past the walls and wire that contain you - you've seen a glimpse and caught a smell when the big door has been opened, but you can only dream of what is on the other side.  Year after year, nothing changes. Dreams turn into hopelessness.  Impossible dreams… Freedom - like a star - impossible to reach.

This is the only life some dogs ever know.

Enter an amazing rescue volunteer, one who values all lives.  A knight in shining armor, marching into Hell for a Heavenly cause.  They make the arrangements to take all dogs, but especially  the older dogs - the ones that some other Rescues have turned down and deemed as too old to be adoptable; the dogs scorned and covered with scars or with matted facial hair, hiding the fact that when this dog is cleaned up, it may be revealed that one eye is missing;  the puppies that are too old to be considered cute and sold in a pet store but too young to be worth feeding until they're able to be breeding stock, valueless at such a tender young age.

These volunteers take a day away from their families and jobs to go and gather these dogs, of all breeds, from across the countryside, overcoming all sorts of adversities thrown at them along the way, and disperse them into the waiting arms of Rescue volunteers whose groups have agreed to take them on, knowing nothing about them other than an approximate age. They clean them up, give them much needed medical attention - usually for the first time in their lives, find them homes where they will have soft beds, plenty of food and fresh water, learn the ways of living as a member of a family, and be loved, yes - glorious love! Forever.

"To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go

To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far

To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star."

These are the lyrics to "The Impossible Dream", from the musical Man of La Mancha, as sung by Andy Williams first in 1971.  I have never heard a song much better suited to be the anthem for Rescue and the plight of these dogs waiting to find Freedom.

~

CP will help Quixote right the wrongs and realize his Possible Dream…

That unreachable star was attained for one Cairn this week.  Please Welcome Quixote, a small, Dark Brindle male.  At eight years old, he was finally able to achieve his dream of reaching the unreachable star of Freedom.  Quixote is named for the character in that musical, a senior who pronounced himself a Knight and went out on missions to conquer evil and right the wrongs of the world around himself.

Quixote has started his week in Freedom with the customary trip to a vet's office to be bathed, groomed, and fully vetted before moving to the comforts of a Foster Home where he'll learn more about life and love, while waiting for his Forever home to fulfill the final portion of his dream.

Many THANKS to Kathy for ALWAYS being there for the dogs and for her enduring compassion.

WELCOME Quixote - your impossible dream has become reality!

Here Kitty Kitty says “Yes!” to Col. Potter!

Contributed by CP's VP of Intakes

Here Kitty Kitty, a Beautiful 9-10 year old Wheaten Female

Last week, Col. Potter was contacted by a shelter about a Cairn that had been dumped there by her family.  She had some medical issues going on, such as needing a dental desperately, a lump on her side, and urinating blood, so was "Rescue only".  We had her picture, an adorable little Wheaten Cairn girl who was reported to be very playful, sweet, housebroken, and loving.

Unfortunately, CP had no available Foster Homes and had to actively recruit one before being able to commit to rescuing this little Cairn, which we were able to offer just a little more than 24 hours later.

The following morning, we got an urgent message from the shelter that they had just read our second communication and needed to know right then if we would take her.  You see, they needed a Rescue commitment by Noon or she would be making the trip to the euthanasia room.  By the time we got the message back from the shelter it was already 12:20 PM.  Were we too late?  Was she already gone?...  We made the call and literally snatched her out of the euthanasia room!

Foster Homes are the backbone of many Rescue groups, including Col. Potter.  We can only rescue as many Cairns as we have Foster Homes able to care for them.  This little girl was very fortunate in the end, but others may not be as lucky.  Maybe we can't save them all, but let's try to never again be in a position like we were in with this little girl where we Almost couldn't help because we didn't have a foster home available.

And now it gives us great pleasure to introduce “Here Kitty Kitty”, a donated name from  Janet Reep M who wonders if sometimes these little guys would like it if we would just stand in the yard, say "Here Kitty Kitty” and have an unsuspecting cat appear so that it could be chased away as prey?...  Janet and a fellow Rescue friend were having a tough day when she wondered this out loud and it made them both smile.

This is one fortunate little girl to have the CP family behind her.  We're hoping for a very positive outcome from her vetting to get her healthy again, but that all costs money.  Every little bit helps, so if you would like to contribute to Here Kitty Kitty's medical expenses, please send your checks to:

Chipmunk, a little 1-2 year old Wheaten Male

Please give a warm Welcome to CP's new kid on the block, little Chipmunk!  This sweet young man found himself a stray.  A Good Samaritan took him in, and reached out to find his owner.  When no owner was found, she contacted Col. Potter.

Chipmunk is estimated to be 1-2 years old, and weighs 11 pounds.  He loves attention, and is reported to be sweet!   He is having a full spa treatment this week, and will be looking for that perfect home soon!

Lara’s Col. Potter Song!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Lara, a 4 year old Wheaten Female

This past weekend, a 4 year old Wheaten girl found herself alone and scared at the shelter.  Deemed un-adoptable by the shelter (as a lot of our kids are), Col. Potter was called in to help.

One of our volunteer's picked her up and whisked her off to safety!  She is now enjoying her spa time and will go to her foster home in a few days.   She is reported to be a sweet, happy girl.

Laura, “protector of the home and fields”…

Cairn's are natural protectors and, with that, it is fitting that this little girl will be known as “CP's Lara.”  The name was donated by Christine O. through our Name a Rescue Cairn Program.   “Lara” means “protector of home and fields” – a Perfect name for a Cairn!

…looking for the right Forever Home!

Please Welcome Lara, the newest member of the Col Potter family!

Voluntary Recall by Procter & Gamble

Written by your CP Product Safety Volunteer

Well folks, you may have heard that we have another pet food recall from Proctor & Gamble (P&G), this time affecting Iams & Eukanuba products.  This affects both dog AND cat foods, so please Click on this link and check your bags against the lot/UPC codes listed there:

P&G cites salmonella concerns as the cause of this voluntary recall:

“The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) has voluntarily recalled specific lots of dry pet food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. These lots were distributed in the United States and represent roughly one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of annual production. No Salmonella-related illnesses have been reported to date in association with these product lots.

“Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

“Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.  Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

“Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.  Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”

If you have recalled products matching the lot/UPC codes, you may contact the store from whom you purchased -- some retailers will accept returns to ship back to the manufacturer.  P&G also states customers may discard any unused product and contact them at (800) 208-0172, or visit www.iams.com or www.eukanuba.com.

Col. Potter is Home Away From Home!

Contributed by CP's VP of Intakes

Hyatt, a charming 5 month old Wheaten Male

As Summer starts to wind down, many of us have taken road trips and vacations to visit the lake, ocean, family reunions, national parks, sporting events, or just to feel the wind in our face.  Along the way, we've carefully chosen where to stay when away from home.  There are many different choices from rustic cabins, quaint bed and breakfasts, or major hotel chains with all their amenities.  If you think about it, Col. Potter is like a major hotel chain with all the amenities for our furkids, as we are truly their home away from the home they are so desperately waiting for.

Marriott, a bright 6 year old Wheaten Female

This weekend, Monika made yet another road trip to a familiar place, in a kind of family reunion, and provided the winds of freedom in the faces of five little Cairns!  They are currently enjoying their spa treatment at our vet, with all the amenities they have to offer them, before moving on next week to their Foster Home - aka their luxury hotel accommodations!  Most hotel chains have catchy slogans and these furkids are looking forward to enjoying each of their promises.

Clarion, a beautiful 5 year old Wheaten Female

Please help us welcome the Home Away From Home Kids:

Wyndham - Male, Dark Brindle, DOB 8/16/2011 - the Wyndham slogan is "the right way - the Wyndham way"  Certainly this boy will agree that he has found “the right way” landing in the loving arms of CP and he will enjoy the rest of his life - his way!

Marriott - Female, Black Brindle, DOB 5/4/07 - the Marriott slogan is "Your Home Away From Home" and Marriott is very happy to call CP her home until she finds her Forever home - which will not take very long!

Wyndham, a handsome 2 year old Dark Brindle Male

Hilton - Male, Cream, DOB 3/24/13 - the Hilton slogan is "Take me to the Hilton"  How many people are going to be saying "take me to Hilton" to get to this sweet boy?  Quite a few we’re guessing!

Hyatt - Male, Cream, DOB 3/24/13, Hilton's brother - the Hyatt slogan is "Feel the Hyatt Touch" and, just like his brother, people are going to be lining up to feel the loving touch of this little sweetheart!

Hilton, a sweet 5 month old Wheaten Male

Clarion - Female, Wheaten, DOB 6/6/08 - Clarion's slogan is "Clarion living" and this little beauty is now living the good life with CP!

The red carpet has been rolled out, the front door has been swung open, and their luxurious accommodations are awaiting these five precious little Cairns!

Welcome All to CP, and thanks for staying with us for awhile - your Home Away From Home!
