LB Gives Thanks for Col. Potter!

Contributed by CP's VP of Intakes

LB, a thankful 1-2 year old Black Brindle Male

While most of us were busy preparing for the Thanksgiving Holiday earlier this week, snug and warm in our homes, with the wonderful aromas of delicious food filling the air, one little Cairn had somehow lost his home, had become a stray running loose, searching for food and shelter as Winter closed in on him.  Luckily for him, he was picked up by animal control and taken to a small, local shelter where he was examined by the shelter vet.  There it was discovered that this young and very handsome little Cairn boy had a severely broken left rear leg and probably needed surgery.  This shelter had not the funds or facilities to help this little Cairn boy, so he would be euthanized.  But, Thanksgiving was just around the corner, and a caring and compassionate vet tech begged for the shelter to give her a few days to find a Rescue willing to take this little Cairn boy as the vet tech could just tell there was something special about him.  The vet tech was given permission to take the little Cairn boy home with her over the Thanksgiving Holiday, and she was given pain meds to help keep him comfortable... but after all the Thanksgiving turkey was eaten, everyone was full from the stuffing, and had filled their sweet tooth with the pumpkin and apple pies, and washed it all down with the beverage of their choice, then enjoyed a nap on the couch between football games – after all of that, if a Rescue was not found, then Friday this little boy would be euthanized.

LB will require surgery to repair a badly broken leg

As Black Friday loomed, the vet tech reached out to Col. Potter.  Intakes worked right through the Thanksgiving Holiday and into Black Friday, working on the medical issues and arrangements that would be necessary to help this little Thanksgiving miracle boy.

While many of us were out shopping for Black Friday bargains, several CP volunteers were working, hand-in-hand, getting this boy picked up, taken in for X-rays at one vet, and then moved to a specialty vet who will perform the surgery.  To the CP Intakes team, this was the very best Black Friday sale that ever could have been made!

Please help us welcome Col. Potter's own little Thanksgiving miracle, LB, a very handsome, Black Brindle Cairn boy, estimated to be less than 2 years old, about 17 pounds, and about the sweetest, friendliest little boy you will ever meet.  He has charmed everyone that has come in contact with him!  We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful vet tech that reached out to CP and kept this sweet boy alive and comfortable, and to Ken G. for being our eyes and feet on the ground yesterday.

We are very thankful that CP was there and able to give this little boy a chance.  But this chance did not come without a price - and a hefty price at that.  We are guessing he was hit by a car which caused the four fractures in his femur plus a chip that may have done some nerve damage to his leg.  Because of the Thanksgiving Holiday and an emergency that came in the door just about the same time as we did with this boy, his surgery has been postponed until Monday.  The surgeon gives him good odds that they will be able to repair the fractures with steel plates and pins, and is hopeful that the chip hasn't caused too much nerve damage.  We are hoping that some of you haven't spent all your money on Black Friday sales and still have a little left to help with this little boy’s medical expenses, or that perhaps you might even ask your family to donate to his medical expenses as a holiday gift to you.

All donations should include a note to help LB and should be sent to:

While Thanksgiving Day is officially over, we think this was Thanksgiving for little LB!  We know he's very happy and thankful that he found his way into the loving arms of Col. Potter.  Please help us welcome him, and we hope you will be able to help support his medical expenses.

Abbie & Gem Give Thanks!

Written by Abbie fka CP American

Gem and I are So Thankful for Daddy’s lap!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!  Abbie here!  Gem sends her best wishes also, but doesn’t know how to use the computer yet so I’m doing it for both of us.

11/13/10

I am Thankful that Mom and Dad came into my life that day!  This will be my 4th Thanksgiving Day here on Long Island and I just had to let you know how happy I am - and Gem too - even though this is only her 3rd Thanksgiving here!

I am Thankful that Mom and Dad brought Gem home to meet me!

We are both really Thankful for Mom and Dad, and Mom and Dad are really Thankful to Col. Potter for rescuing us both and helping Match us all up!

Gem is Thankful that Daddy likes her to nap with him sometimes!

I could go on and on about how thankful we are for all the wonderful things we enjoy in our home, but Gem and I think we would be most thankful if you can do something to help one of the Fosters who still need to find a good home.  Wouldn’t that make you feel good too?

I am thankful for my own little green bed and my green balls!
Gem is thankful that I am happy to share my nice little bed!

Mom agreed with us and she had a nice Yum Yum video made showcasing All of the Foster Cairns and Mixes who still need homes.  Now, I’m not really sure what this “Yum Yum,” business is all about, but Gem and I do know what it is like to Not have a home.  We know what it’s like to have nothing to be thankful for…  When we look at all these wonderful faces, we remember how very lucky we are, Gem and I, and we are Thankful to everyone who helped us – On Thanksgiving Day and Everyday – even when my green balls are all broken or lost!

Yes, Gem and I have Lots to be Thankful for every day!

OK!  Forget about the turkey!  Let’s go see if Mom has any green balls we can play with!

Sunday is full of SWEETS! Each week we will showcase the sweeter side of Cairns. Allegra & Edith find an Open Gate at CP!

Contributed by CP's VP of Intakes

Allegra, a 6 year old Red Wheaten Female

Edith, a 7 year old Wheaten Female

Col. Potter is like a safe haven, a protected harbor.  We open our gate, and we hear the pitter patter of little paws come through our door, the Cairns that have never known love, care, or freedom.  We help them all, no matter where they come from, no matter if they have physical injuries, no matter if they are just beginning their life or are entering the twilight years.  Our only restriction is having available Foster Homes, those safe havens in which these little Cairns can spend a little time while awaiting their Forever Home to find them.

Yesterday, two beautiful little girls found their way out of the approaching Winter cold and into our protected harbor.  Our gate was open, and their little paws happily came through the Col. Potter door!  Please help us welcome:

Allegra - F, 12 lbs., 6 years old, Red Wheaten
Edith - F, 13.5 lbs., 7 years old, Golden Wheaten

Their names are from the Longfellow poem, “The Children’s Hour”

“…I hear in the chamber above me
The patter of little feet,
The sound of a door that is opened,
And voices soft and sweet.
From my study I see in the lamplight,
Descending the broad hall stair,
Grave Alice, and laughing Allegra,
And Edith with golden hair. …”

Many thanks to Julie and Judith for guiding Allegra and Edith to the Col. Potter gate and through the door!  Welcome sweet girls!

Smudge Sparkles in Obedience!

Written by Smudge fka CP Champ

Smudge fka CP Champ

Well, Hello!  Smudge here!  My Mom is all excited about me earning my 3rd Leg and Title in AKC Rally Obedience, Novice B Division, but I have to confess, I am a little confused by all of this.  I mean, I started out in Iowa, four and a half years ago, with 4 legs all by myself – well, I guess my Momma and Poppa had something to do with it – but you know what I mean!

Smudge earns his 3rd Leg at AKC Trials

Obedience Trials is something my Mom used to do, a long time ago, before she had me, and she just decided that I was too smart to not get back into it.  We have done a lot of training over the years, and then she signed us up for this Leg thing.  Mom and I “finished” in three straight shows, all scores in the 90's out of 100.  Mom is like, “Smudge is a rock star!” but I am still confused – I still only see 4 legs, not 7… - but I am happy that Mom is so happy!

Smudge and Mom working together!

You know, I’m not so sure about the “obedience” part of this either.  I mean, Mom and I do a lot of training, we work together to get these “legs”, and we are both doing something we really want to do, so “obedience” …maybe not so much.  I am, after all, a Cairn!

Newbie Enters the Learning Curve at Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Newbie, a handsome 7 year old Red Wheaten Male

“Newbie” - Originated in the British Isles in the 1800s as slang for the “new boy”.  It has now become commonly used for anyone “new” to something, such as technology, the workplace, or even a Foster Home that can't remember the new furkid's name!  Many long term Foster Moms and Dads can relate to that, I'm sure!

This past weekend, Newbie, a 7 year old Wheaten boy, joined Col. Potter.  He has been a very well loved boy, and he came to rescue only because it was time for his owner make a change in living arrangements that often happens as time marches on.  Sadly, due to “rules”, Newbie couldn't make the move, but Col. Potter welcomed him with open arms.  He arrived to his Foster Home, ready to start the next chapter of his life.

Newbie is a typical Cairn that loves belly rubs, digging holes, chasing critters, and cuddles.  He likes people and uses his good looks to charm everyone he meets.

Please welcome the newest boy in town - Newbie!
