I’m Not Sure we’ve been Properly Introduced!

Contributed by a Col. Potter Volunteer

The Scarecrow, Toto, and Dorothy, post-introduction in the Wizard of Oz!

Are you thinking about adding a new Rescued Cairn to your family?  There are many things to consider, and lots of planning to do.  You can expect to get many great tips to help you integrate your New Cairn into your home, so it is good to know that some of this advice will also apply to your current resident dogs.  Introductions is a great example.

Think Ahead about All Introductions!

Whether making introductions to family and friends or other dogs, it is important that you have your calm, secure, Alpha attitude firmly in place so that you can communicate to your New Cairn that this is all under control and there is nothing to worry about.  Remember: your New Cairn is a body language expert, so you communicate everything you project.  Be sure to send the right signals to your Cairn!

Whenever possible, plan ahead when your new Cairn is first meeting a family member or friend, especially if they also have a dog.  Arrange to have both dogs walking outside, in a neutral setting, moving in the same direction, towards a meeting point.  If you imagine a wide “V”, you each start out on opposite sides of the wide end and walk towards the narrow end at approximately the same pace.  Walking in the same direction allows both dogs to get closer and closer while not actually presenting the threat of facing a “new” dog.  When you get close enough to talk to the other person, speak in a happy, positive voice so both dogs know this is a friend.  Avoid handshakes or hugs, at this point, so you don’t accidentally communicate that either dog should feel the need to defend their human.

You should expect the two dogs to scope each other out.  The best situation is where the dogs sniff one another, without any signs of dominance by either one, and, after a few minutes, they basically ignore one another and begin sniffing the grass or acting as if they want to continue their walk.  Sometimes this happens. Often it doesn't.

Sometimes one dog may really want to sniff and sniff and sniff, and the other dog feels that he or she has been sniffed enough.  Use whatever words you use around the house to calm the other dog down, like "EASY", stated firmly as “Ease-eeeeeeeeeee”, and it helps the dogs to back off each other.  Then you should continue your walk, as you would normally.

Be calm and observant, always prepared to act quickly if needed.  You will know by your Cairn’s body language how to proceed in a natural manner that communicates “All is well and under control!”

Rescuing one Cairn will not change the world,
but it will surely change the world for that one Rescued Cairn

Bijoux Celebrates Sweet 16!

Bijoux marks her Sweet 16 in style!

Bijoux Harmon celebrated her 16th birthday on Saturday, February 22, 2014 in Apalachicola.  Bijoux has brought much joy, happiness, and consternation in her 16 years – as any true Cairn lover can understand!  She is a well-traveled little dog, and a fine little studio dog, the inspiration for Oystertown Dog Designs.

Bijoux was 2013 Mardi Paws Queen.  She is a proud member of Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network, which rescues, rehabilitates, and places Cairns throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Bijoux’s Birthday Wish is for all dogs to have loving, caring, Forever homes, and to enjoy a long, well-cared-for life as she has!

Happy Birthday, Bijoux!

Dorothy & Toto in the opening scenes of The Wizard of Oz

The many Volunteers with Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network work tirelessly, every day, across the USA and Canada, in sunshine, rain, snow, or in the wake of tornadoes, and in response to all kinds of natural and human disasters, rescuing Cairns in need and lovingly showing them “there’s no place like home!

"Over the Rainbow" won an Oscar for Best Original Song

We are thrilled to learn that the 2014 Oscar program on March 2nd will pay special tribute to the 75th anniversary of the classic 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz."  If you have not seen this production recently, you are sure to enjoy many wonderful scenes that are bound to be on display during this Oscar presentation - and you will not need a pair of Ruby Shoes to capture the magic!  Winning an Oscar for Best Original Song ("Somewhere Over the Rainbow") and Best Original Score, "The Wizard of Oz." lost the Best Picture Oscar that year to "Gone With the Wind", another enduring classic.

Watch the Oscar Tribute here:
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH59OioDdLk

Watch the movie again, from beginning to end, and you will be in awe of Toto, aka Terry the Cairn Terrier, who is in nearly every scene, representing her breed exceptionally well with her remarkable performance.  Oscar worthy in every sense of the word!

How could we not want to save each and every Cairn in need?

Keets Finds a New World at Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Keets, a sweet, friendly, and very lucky 2 year old Wheaten Female

Once again, Col. Potter comes to the rescue!

CP's Rescue Team searches far and wide for Cairns in need.  When the team learns that a Cairn life is at risk, the search shifts to volunteers who can help rescue the Cairn from danger.  CP's newest little girl landed in a shelter where many dogs are immediately placed on death row after their reclaim period ends.  While they may officially be considered “adoptable”, their lives are dependent upon how much space is available at the shelter.

Keets had just three days - total - for her owner to find and reclaim her.  The shelter was full, so she was immediately at risk.  A wonderful CP volunteer, Jamie D., learned of Keets' plight on the eve of her last day.  The following morning Jamie drove straight to the shelter and welcomed Keets to the CP family.  Jamie confirmed the reports that Keets is a very sweet and friendly Wheaten girl.  Keets is estimated to be just 2 years old and weighs in at just under 14 lbs.  She is currently enjoying a spa week which will include a much needed grooming.

A big thank you to new CP volunteer, Terry W, who volunteered to drive through challenging traffic to collect Keets and get her on her way to her Foster home.  The name Keets was the nickname for a much loved CP Cairn named Kitsune.  CP rescued Kitsune from a puppy mill at just 9 months old and he was adopted by Jamie D.  This very happy Cairn lived life to the fullest.  He loved exploring and his adventures included living in numerous cities across America, and even some time in Peru.  Thanks to Jamie's help, another CP Cairn has had the world opened to her!

Dooley & Tadd Travel Different Roads to Find Safety at Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Tadd, a sweet little 8 year old Wheaten Male

Dooley, a handsome 5.9 year old Wheaten Male

The sun was shining this past weekend, maybe not everywhere, but certainly where it was needed.  Two handsome little Wheaten Cairn boys, from two different families, in two different locations, found themselves needing a safe haven at the very same time, and, for each of them, the sun was brilliant, offering the promise of a bright new day.  Thanks to the many wonderful Col. Potter Volunteers, located almost everywhere, both little boys made their journey to safety, love, and restoration, simultaneously, yet oblivious to one another’s plight.

The truly handsome and sweet-as-can-be Tadd joined the CP family when his previous family had work and family issues that left him in the dark.  A charming Wheaten boy, Tadd is 8 years old and weighs a healthy 17 lbs., and is soaking up the sunshine as he prepares for a new life!

Elsewhere in a far away state, Dooley, a real good-looking Wheaten boy, weighing in at a trim 18 pounds, and sporting that “yeah, I work out” look, teamed up with Col. Potter to put some order back in his life.  Dooley had a really good home, and things were going very well for a long time, but recently his human family started having some problems, and Dooley got kind of nervous when things began to change too much for him.  First he lost his Daddy, then everybody moved to a different house.

Dooley checked the Col. Potter website to see if there was room for him!

In time, he realized that, by his standards, his new living quarters had become too cramped for him and his fur siblings.  Dooley thought it might be time to go out and be his own dog - well, as long as somebody would provide a bed and some good dog food that is!  So, he checked out the Internet and surfed over to Col. Potter Cairn Rescue.  With the help of some wonderful CP volunteers, Dooley was able to see his way to a second chance at a good life.  He kissed his sad and loving Mama good-bye, and he headed to the southwest - to the warm country - and into the welcoming arms of his Col. Potter Foster Mom.  We know that he will revive now and thrive until he’s ready to go to his forever Forever home.

At only 5 11/12 years old, Dooley is a strapping young guy with lots of energy for tennis-ball-fetching and rock-climbing!  And yes: Dooley’s birthday is coming up on March 19!  Dooley noted!  Happy Birthday, little man!

Let’s all give a big Col. Potter Welcome to Tadd and Dooley!

Korbinian Settles on his Perch at Col. Potter!

Written by CP Vice President of Intakes

Korbinian, a handsome 6 year old Red Wheaten Male

Korbinian is a popular name in Europe, especially Germany, and this handsome boy was named by his Foster Mom whose great nephew is named Korbinian.  The meaning of Korbinian is Raven - a bird who is known to follow wagons, sleds, hunting parties, or anything else where they think they can find a quick meal.  They are among the smartest birds, gaining a reputation for solving ever more complicated problems.  Ravens are confident, inquisitive birds that strut around or occasionally bound forward with light, two-footed hops.  In flight they are buoyant and graceful, interspersing soaring, gliding, and slow flaps.  They do well around people.  If you didn't know that I was describing a bird, you might think I was describing a Cairn!

CP's Korbinian had a Mom who loved him very much, but due to her health issues, she could no longer care for him and decided he needed to find a new Forever home.  He's a big boy weighing in at 20 pounds, and is a youthful 6 years old with lots of play in him, but he also loves to cuddle.  Korbinian is a little strong willed, but what Cairn isn't?

Please help us welcome Korbinian to CP where, much like the Raven, he will be able to flap his wings and soar into a new Forever home!
