Of course, the Volunteers at Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network believe that every day is a International Adopt a Rescued Cairn Day and we're always thrilled to find wonderful new families who are ready to open their hearts and homes to a Rescued Cairn.

Many Thanks to all of our wonderful Volunteers who do so much to help so many Cairn in need!

How Do You Do? Etiquette of Proper Introductions

Taking the time to make a proper introduction is key to creating harmony when you bring a new dog into your home.  Macie and Cindel have clearly been introduced with great results!
How to Introduce Two Dogs for the First Time

There are many tips to help you introduce your new dog to other resident dogs or other dogs they may encounter, and all of these methods require patience and consistency, as well as a solid understanding of dog body language.

Mary Hirt of Teacher’s Pet K9 in West Los Angeles, California, gives a great demonstration of making the Introduction, with a clear explanation of why her method works.  The dogs in the video are clearly not Cairn, but you can easily visualize your Cairns as you watch this step-by-step introduction.

Learn to Walk a Reactive Dog!

Yes!  Even a reactive little Cairn boy can learn to be calm and attentive on a walk!
This is a wonderful video by Zak George which demonstrates how to work with a highly reactive dog, using the "Look at me!" and "Get out of Dodge!" positive training methods.  There is a spot of advertising by his sponsor, but it it worth waiting the minute to see this really helpful video.  Obviously, the dog is not a Cairn and we recommend only using a lead attached to a secure harness, not a lead attached to a collar, but everything else he demonstrates applies perfectly.

Walking your dog can be fun!

Equipment to Improve Your Walk with Your Cairn!

Some Cairns (like Macie) walk extremely well with the usual equipment, but some of them can use a little extra help training with pulling and lunging.

Understanding the Freedom Harness & Gentle Leader

There are many tips to help you train your dog to walk properly on a lead without pulling, and these methods just require patience and consistency in your training.   There are also several no-pull harnesses and leads that you might want to consider.  They are not magic solutions - you still have to train with patience and consistency - but they can be effective in speeding up the training/conditioning process.

Mary Hirt of Teacher’s Pet K9 in West Los Angeles, California, gives a great demonstration of the Freedom Harness with a clear explanation of why it works, and this applies to other similar training leads like the Gentle Leader or the TTouch Walk Right Harness.
