Foster Spotlight - Servus Update!

UPDATE: We are very pleased to announce that Servus has found his forever family! Are you looking for a TERRIFIC TERRIER? Check out our available cairns! Look for Servus and other "Happily Ever After" stories on our Post Adoption blog.

Written by his Foster Mom

Servus (nicknamed Sammy) loves his toys and is happy little boy, wagging his tail until his whole body wiggles. He is also very tolerant of foster mom dressing him up for Halloween. His weakness is squeaky toys, but he can’t resist going into foster mom’s purse to steal various items. He’s been known to look longingly at the kitchen trash can, but since he can’t get to it, no problems, but more than likely he would find a way to get into it if he could.

Servus/Sammy is a typical puppy mill breeder boy. He is not trusting of humans, feels competition with other male dogs, and is subservient to female dogs (he knows who is boss!). He has learned to trust his foster mom, and will learn to trust his new family. The more comfortable he gets, the more his true cairn personality comes out. He loves to play with toys, and been seen playing briefly with the resident female cairn. Since he’s been in his foster home for a good while, he’s gotten very comfortable with the other resident dogs. However, he considers cats as prey and he should only be adopted to a cat-free home. Servus was abused and not given a chance to socialize in the puppy mill, but you can see the sensitivity and need to be loved when you look deep into his eyes. I hope you enjoy this little video of a sweet little cairn who looks cute wearing horns, a wig, a pirate’s costume and a Dracula cape.

The Foster Spotlight - Servus

UPDATE: We are very pleased to announce that Servus has found his forever family! Are you looking for a TERRIFIC TERRIER? Check out our available cairns! Look for Servus and other "Happily Ever After" stories on our Post Adoption blog.

Servus was first introduced by Col. Potter in September 2007. He was one of the cairns in the group “9/11 Rescue Heroes” and is named after one of the real canine heroes who served after the tragedy of 9/11. Servus is a hero in his own right, as he fought to live, and not lay down and die in the puppy mill. After being treated for heartworms and a complete makeover it is now time to find this little “hero” a forever home ALL his own! When his Foster Mom was asked about Servus she wrote the following:

Servus is sweet and naughty, all rolled into one. He loves attention and seeks me out to pet him. He also stands guard at the babygate to watch for vermin (cats). He doesn't growl at them, but he really would like to chase them, I think. He's found out that the cat box has snacks and that their food tastes good, too. The naughty Servus takes advantage any time I forget to shut the baby gate.

Servus has the most beautiful and softest eyes. They say "love me, love me". And I do. The only time Servus barks is when he hears me come home from work and when he's excited that supper is about to be served. It's like he's saying, "Hurry up woman, I'm hungry!" As with any long term puppy mill dog, he's learning what love and life outside of a small cage are all about and makes progress each day.

Servus loves to play with toys and will pick one up and walk around with it, and will play gentle tug of war. His favorite place is standing next to me for scritches or lying in a dog bed next to me. He isn't comfortable being picked up but does not complain when I do since he loves the attention. He wags his tail all the time and is a happy boy. He's still a little shy, but will come out of that eventually.

Servus is a former breeder dog, so he does feel the need to compete with other male dogs. He's not comfortable around new dogs until he gets used to their presence. There was a new male here for a month and Servus wasn't happy at first, but then stopped paying attention after the first couple of weeks. Some male breeder cairns can be very protective once they've discovered how wonderful life can be in a home, and until they learn that their human will protect them. Obedience training is highly advised as it helps the new cairn and human to bond, as well as gives them structure. Servus is a smart little boy and will learn most anything if taught correctly by positive reinforcement. Servus was abused most of his eight years and has every right to be sensitive. Servus deserves to receive only gentleness, praise and love for the rest of his life.

Servus

I hope you all can see the wondrous miracle that CP has wrought with this little guy. At first he was afraid to even look at me when he arrived 9/23/07. Now he gives kisses and wags his tail all the time. He's finally starting to look like a real cairn, now that his coat has grown in a little. Servus was a mill boy, and so matted that he had to be shaved by the vet. I've included his intake picture for comparison, as well as a couple from a few days later. He doesn't even look like the same dog. Servus loves to play with toys and has a lot of that cairn attitude. He has survived heartworm treatment, will soon be neutered, have a dental exam and will need at least one tooth removed. Servus is a work in progress with very little problems. He continues to need work on marking, but a bellyband takes care of that. He is not afraid of thunder or the camera, and it's almost difficult to get a pic of him without him nosing into the camera. He loves attention and quickly comes to be petted. He will make the most wonderful companion for that lucky adopter. I trimmed his tail hair short, as I think it looks better and cuter than with the hair left longer (Servus is missing part of his tail). This boy has overcome so much with CP's help. You should all pat yourselves on the back!

Servus is a big boy, standing 14 inches tall at the shoulders and weighing in at around 20 lbs. Servus wags his tail all the time, and is mostly a very happy little boy. He just needs a quiet home that will continue to help him grow into the magnificent cairn boy he was meant to be. He wants to be the lead boy, so going to a home with a female or two would be best. Servus is still a little shy, so needs help to become an outgoing cairn. Regular outings will do wonders to help him learn that no one is going to hurt him. He loves to take things, like most cairns. He's better with the cats, but isn't allowed to get into their area.

Servus has the most beautiful eyes, which I am sure you will see from these pics.
