Please welcome McQuinn to CP!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

Every little boy loves to explore and go on an adventure, checking out new trails and paths, finding little hidden creeks and streams to skip stones or even stop to fish for a little while. It's summertime and the wanderlust gets the best of all of us, but none moreso than a young, inquisitive little boy Cairn.

Such is the case of our newest handsome little boy to join the Col. Potter family. He got the wanderlust bug and found his adventure ended when he was picked up as a stray on a busy road. While he had a collar on, there was no identification or microchip to be found. The only thing he's been exploring the past 10 days is the inside of a kennel waiting for his stray hold to expire so he could finally start his next adventure with Col. Potter!

McQuinn is a donated name from Sabrina L. He's estimated to be about 4 years old, sweet and friendly. Lucky for McQuinn his exploration days are over and he's now in the loving arms of Col. Potter. Heartworm positive, he will definitely need the love and support of his Col. Potter family and friends to help him get through the treatment and recovery.

McQuinn will be listed in the Guardian Angel program, so please consider donating to his care and treatment.

There won't be anymore adventures or exploring for McQuinn for a little while, but once he's healthy again, this handsome little boy will be ready to find his very own home where they can experience new adventures and exploration together safely!

Welcome, Kenna!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please welcome Col. Potter's Kenna, who recently joined our rescue family. This sweet, chubby girl is a 4 year old wheaten who is happy to be here. She was living with a family that realized they were not the best family to meet her needs. The family made the hard decision to reach out to rescue to see if a more appropriate home could be found. They were patient while all the details were worked out, knowing that she deserved a great life, not just a life.

Kenna will be working on her weight, getting her spa treatment to look her best, and looking for that perfect forever!

Welcome, Kenna!!

Please welcome Rita to our clan! Rita is a vivacious 4-year-old world traveler who had her puppy beginnings in Merry Old England. She crossed the pond with her people and landed in the US.

Unfortunately, though she was much loved in the new world she found herself in, that world was not big enough for both her and a small child. Rita has once again packed her bags and has come to stay with Col. Potter until she finds her forever home.

Let's give her a Cheery-O welcome!

Please welcome CP's Koch!

Contributed by a CP Intakes Volunteer

Please give a warm welcome to our new boy, Koch. This boy is estimated to be 4 years old, and is very lucky to be a CP kid.

All we know about him is that he was in a extreme high kill shelter facing death. He made his way to us thanks to the work of a local group that pulls almost daily from that shelter so at least some get out alive.

He will be having his spa treatment this week, and moving to his foster home this weekend.

Welcome, Koch! We can't wait to hear your story~

Welcome Beckett

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please help welcome CPs new boy, Beckett. This sweet boy is four years old, and initial reports from Foster Mom are as follows:
This little boy is a lovebug with the most beautiful brown eyes. He has been playing with one of his toys and danced in circles when I was getting the food ready. He loves people and has already rolled over for a belly rub and groans with pleasure. He's kept his belly band dry. He's not sure what to think of my cats, but did not chase when I said no. He is just adorable with those Yoda ears. He is just a sweetheart.

Sweet Beckett- we are glad you are here! Welcome!

Maddie Girl joins CP

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please welcome Maddie Girl! She is described by foster mom as a 'cute little jumping bean'. She is a sweet 4 year old black brindle darling, happy and a joy to be around. Her beloved adoptive Mom is facing some extreme medical issues, yet Maddie Girl was Mom's biggest concern. Mom knew this little bean needed to be safe and well cared for, so she reached out for some help. Maddie Girl was welcomed with open arms, yet sad, heavy hearts for all Mom is going through.

We are so blessed to have a group like Col. Potter that cares about our homes just as much as it cares about the cairns!!

Welcome Maddie Girl!

Welcome Bumble!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Please give a warm welcome to CP's new boy, Bumble. This sweet 4 year old wheaten cairn boy was surrendered to a shelter when his very sad family lost their home and could no longer keep him. He is reported to be very sweet, friendly, gentle, quiet, high energy, smart and eager to please. He’s also said to be housebroken and knows sit and shake. Reports from the vet where he is boarding are glowing. He is loving running and zooming in the snow in the enclosed yard.Bumble's name was chosen after the Abominable Snow Monster in Rudolph. His face reminded Foster Mom of Bumble. Seems appropriate given his love of zooming in the cold snow! Welcome Bumble!

Say Hello to CP's newest girl

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

The resilience of a cairn terrier is in itself beautiful to behold. When you also know that this cairn has had to endure harsh conditions and little care all of her life, her resilience becomes simply amazing. Such is the case of this adorable, petite, 4 year old cairn female. She has known nothing but hard times and no love and her life has been a struggle just to survive. But, take a close look at her face and the resilience comes shining through. She is ready to put the past behind her and embrace her new life and what the future holds for her. She has already made quite an impression on the vet staff, loving everyone and anyone that has time to pay attention to her and cuddle her. Of course, who could resist that face and the fact this little sweetheart only weighs 11 pounds!

Named from our Name A Rescue Cairn program in memory of the Rescue Team's own Sheri K's mom, please help me welcome Barbara C. to the Col. Potter family!

G-L-O-R-I-A

Dictated to a CP Intakes volunteer by Gloria

Usually an Intake person introduces the new Col. Potter kids but I'm going to introduce myself because I want to tell you my own story. My name is Gloria, I'm a petite cairn girl and my 4th birthday was last week!

The next thing I know I was going for a car ride. Yippee--a car ride, I hadn't done that in a long time. I hadn't much fun for a while and I was so excited at the possibility. The car kept going down the road but soon I didn't recognize the scenery. Great - I'm going to some where new, maybe the dog toy store for a birthday present? I hope so!

Soon the car pulled into a driveway but nothing looked familiar. As I got out of the car I heard dogs barking and cats meowing. Could it be? A surprise party for ME? When I went into the building, no one yelled surprise. Something was wrong. This wasn't fun anymore. I was escorted to a pen with some other small dogs. I asked "What is this place?" The old beagle in my pen told me and I was in disbelief. A kill shelter, I'm in a KILL SHELTER!! This was my worst birthday ever. I heard a person say that there was no money to help with my skin problem, no one would want me and I was scheduled to die. I was on death row all because someone didn't take care of me. I was so sad. I curled up in a ball in my bed and hid my face.

The phone rang. I heard the shelter lady talking to someone. Some ladies from Col. Potter wanted to help me. I didn't know what Col. Potter was--good or bad? I hid my face in despair.

Soon a lady from Col. Potter put me in a crate and we went on a car ride. This seemed different so I wagged my tail. Before long I was getting a special bath, boy did that feel good! When all the dirt was washed off, I was a red head! Next I got a trim--all the mats and icky stuff was gone. It gets better--I got a yummy dinner something I hadn't had in a long time. When it was time for bed, I got my very own nightshirt, a soft blanket and a clean crate--all for me! I slept like a baby. I was dreaming of my next birthday because now I'll HAVE a next birthday. You're all invited to my birthday party too and I'll be singing as loud as I can G-L-O-R-I-A!!

Thank you Col. Potter.

xo Gloria

Red Alert! Arkie joins CP

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Red Alert! Red Alert! That was the subject line on an email to Intakes. It means call now, or a dog will not live another day. Luckily, Arkie had someone at the shelter that knew CP would help. Within 24 hours this little boy went from Red Alert, to safety.

Arkie is a 4 yo old male cairn that has been in and out of shelters all his life. This time, the shelter could not find a home for him. Yesterday he was scruffy, overweight, and had “major” skin problems. Today Arkie was bathed and put on antibiotics for the “major” skin issues that will fade away with time away from fleas and ticks. Today this little man is sleeping in a warm, friendly vet office, waiting for the start of his new life. Oh, and his weight issues, well, good food, the right exercise and lots of love will fade away that problem too!

Please give our chubby little Arkie a big CP welcome.

FROM FREEDOM TO TRAGEDY TODAY ...

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

He had spent his 4 years as a breeder dog, then found his way to a Missouri shelter as a result of the Dept. of Ag shutting down the large-scale breeding operation he had been a part of. He went to a foster home for a short time, but they didn't have the Cairn or PM experience to work with him and he was shipped back to the shelter where he had run out of time. CP agreed to take this boy and the shelter offered, in gratitude for our help, to transport him to our vet. All was set and he was transported today.

TRADEGY CAN STRIKE IN AN INSTANT! And it did ... The shelter had allowed him to be transported without using a crate. The person transporting was not experienced with transporting and especially not PM kids. They were in our vet's parking lot, he had made it to freedom and the loving arms of Col. Potter ... and then the car door was opened ... AND HE WAS GONE! He ran across a busy highway and disappeared on the other side. Unfortunately, there was fencing on the other side of the highway which kept him trapped on the highway side of the fencing. He hid there in the tall, dead grass and debris along the highway. Volunteers started searching immediately. This little boy got spooked when a volunteer got near him and took off back across the highway ... he was hit and killed immediately.

We can no longer help this little boy, but we can learn from him and always remember his lesson so that he did not die invain. There are reasons Col. Potter requires all furkids be transported in a crate and not taken out. There are reasons we require all doors and windows be tightly closed in a vehicle if there is an emergency and a furkid has to be removed from their crate. There are reasons a recently released PM kid should never be allowed out on a leash in an unfenced area. There are reasons Col. Potter preaches this. And what happened today is the reason we will continue to preach this. When you transport for CP or transport your own furkids, remember what happened today. Remember a handsome, young little boy that will never know having his own family and a happily ever after. Remember all it would have taken to keep him safe ...

PLEASE LIGHT YOUR CANDLES for Hopkins, a 4 year old, grey brindle, male who will now only know freedom at the Rainbow Bridge. Run free and safe little man. You are loved and we will never forget you ...

THREE FILM STARS PREMIERING NOW IN CP!!

Life is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're going to get" is a line from the 1994 film Forrest Gump. This film taught many life lessons about never giving up, seeing the world a little differently and being able to do just about anything if you put your mind to it. In many ways, our rescue Cairns are alot like some of the main characters from this film. Forrest Gump said "You've always got to put the past behind you before you can move on."

This weekend, three little Cairn boys did put the past behind them and are now moving on to a life of love and freedom with Col. Potter. While we never know exactly what we're going to be getting when we dip into the "box of chocolates", I'm certain that these three are all something very sweet.

Forrest is Male, DOB 11/21/03, wheaten - he's the shy one of the group and sits and shakes, but loves to get skritches.

Lt. Dan is Male, DOB 9/4/03, red wheaten - he's athletic and appears to have had something to cause him to lose the black pigment on his upper left lip.

Bubba Gump is Male, DOB 4/11/05, dark brindle - he's a talker who loved getting a bath. Bubba Gump is a donated name from the Name a PM Kid Program. He is named in honor and memory of another Bubba Gump from New Jersey.

Thanks to two incredible people who are always there and ready to help the furkids. A photo album follows.

"I'm not a smart man, but I know what love is" -- another wonderful line from the movie and one that if these little boys don't already know what love is, they will soon learn. Please help me welcome Forrest, Lt. Dan and Bubba Gump who now has a special Guardian Angel as his "best good friend".
