Missouri River Kids III Flow Into Col. Potter

The third and probably final group of Missouri River Kids arrived Sunday. We were told there would be six Cairns coming in, but unfortunately, only five were released with the puppy mill deciding to keep one of the males who was older and they were quite attached to. This means that boy will never know medical care, what it's like to sleep inside a house and be warm when it's cold or cool when it's hot outside. He will live out his days the same way he has lived his entire life, in a small, filthy cage. They also kept a couple of older females and three younger breeding pairs of Cairns. While we would have loved to rescue every single Cairn this puppy mill had, we rescued 21 Cairns out of this PM and into the loving arms of CP. Maybe, at some point in the future, we will get the remainder, but if not, please keep these furkids in your thoughts.

Castor: F, DOB 5/1/07, red/grey brindle, friendliest of the three girls, but still timid and very thin

Tarkio: M, DOB 8/9/01, red wheaten, timid but did well once picked up

Roubidoux: M, DOB 9/29/06, red brindle, bouncy, tail-wagging, friendly, handsome guy

My thanks once again to Kathy & Barney H. for making the trip to pick-up these furkids, and for taking the photos. Incidentally, along with the five Cairns, one more little Westie found his way to freedom. You may remember two female Westies, Willow and Winnie, were released with the second group of Missouri River Kids. The following is a picture of the little Westie boy:



We are VERY much in need of foster homes for male fosters. Once again, everyone wants to foster the little girls, leaving the little boys out in the cold. If you are able to foster a male, PM, owner surrender or shelter surrender, please email us or fill out a foster home application.

As you look at the faces of the Missouri River Kids III, remember that CP is only able to help them and the other PM kids with your help and generosity. The New Leash on Life is running through this weekend. The proceeds of NLOL goes directly to help PM kids. Please ask your family, friends, coworkers and associates to consider purchasing just one NLOL chance. Show them the pictures of the Missouri River Kids and let them know how important and how much appreciated their support is and what it means to the life of these furkids. They truly can make a difference in the lives of these furkids!

Rollin' Down The River - Missouri River Kids II Arrive

Last week was absolutely horrible weather for the central part of the country - coating everything in a thick, bone chilling layer of ice. The mill these kids come from was in the direct path of the storm and had parts of several sheds on the property brought down by the ice. Luckily for these Cairns, they managed to survive until help could arrive this weekend. Kathy & Barney H. made another trip to rescue these furkids. The roads were still so bad in this area, they had to park up on the highway and carry the dogs up to the vehicle, as they were unable to get down the driveway to the property. There will have to be one more trip made in about a month to rescue the remaining Cairns who had to be left behind until they whelp and wean their puppies. Keep them and the other dogs that remain at this mill in your thoughts ...

I would like to personally THANK all of you who over the past week or so have donated to Name a PM Kid or started off our new Sponsor a PM Kid Program with a bang. It is only through your support that these Missouri River Kids are able to come into the loving arms of Col. Potter. And, I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A REQUEST ... Valentine's Day is less than two weeks away. For everyone out there that gives OR receives roses, flower arrangements, candy or even a special dinner out from or to your loved ones ... WOULD YOU CONSIDER GIVING THE ULTIMATE GIFT OF LOVE ... LIFE FOR A PUPPY MILL KID???????? Instead of spending $25, $50 or even $100 on long stem roses, flowers, candy or dinner, give your loved one or ask to be given a CAIRN for Valentine's Day! Finally, I just can't conclude this introduction without one more bit of news ... yesterday as soon as Kathy and Barney had pulled away and had cell phone service they called me to report in, but to also ask if I knew of any rescues for the Cairn blond cousins, the Westies. Seems the miller had two female Westies she wanted to get rid of ASAP as they just weren't good producers and she had had it with them. Luckily, I was able to give Westie Rescue a call and get in touch with them. Kathy and Barney turned right around and went back and got those two little Westies out of there, one of which the miller pulled away from a nursing puppy to get rid of her. She didn't even want to wait for her to wean the pup ... This is just another example of PM mentality and what these furkids endure and live through ...

Welcome Missouri River Kids!

A river is a lifeline in many US communities. It can be a source of harnessing electrical power, a transportation link, source of food and a beautiful recreational respite. There are many different types of rivers from ones like the mighty Mississippi, to much smaller, local waterways. They have been romanticized in music, had entire books written revolving around them and immortalized in poetry. Rivers flow through all parts of the country, passing through communities of every social strata. The flow and ebb of a river's water can be hypnotic and never ending ...

Flashback about two years ago to Kathy telling the story of finding their way to a puppy mill to pick-up a lone male Cairn. They left the main road and the country road kept getting narrower and narrower the farther they went. Coming to the end of the road stood a ramshackle, old mobile home and beyond that were row after row of rabbit hutch-like cages filled with dogs sitting under the shade of trees and positioned so they would all drain down a hill -- forming a river of excrement ...

This past Sunday, Kathy and Barney H. once again made their way back to this same PM. Thanks to Intakes being notified by a new volunteer to CP of an ad in a local newspaper of a PM wanting to get rid of all of their Cairns, this river runs deep. The dogs are now all housed in a dilapidated building to "protect" them from the winter weather, but the stench and the filth remains and the river now runs inside. CP will be bringing in the remaining 20+ Cairns from this PM over the next couple of months, stopping the flow from this one "river" forever.

This will require a HUGE commitment of resources by Col. Potter - from foster homes, to transport volunteers, even Blanket Aunties -- but no commitment more important than financial! The cost to vet and get these 20+ Cairns set-up in foster homes will be HUGE. Once again, please consider supporting these PM kids by donating to Name a PM Kid or just sponsoring one of them. These 9 are no longer living along the banks of a filthy, smelly river running through a dilapidated shed, but their kennel mates remain and are waiting for us to once again send the Rescue Barge down the river to bring them to safety and freedom.
