Taming Tip #18:

Practice one behavior that your dog already knows, but add distance to it. Such as, "coming when called", "sit", or "down". Reward your dog for performing the behavior and staying as you increase the distance, but remember to increase the distance slowly and do not always add distance but "Ping Pong" your distance. You "Ping Pong" distance by taking two steps away, four steps away and then only take one step away, then you might go five steps away, keep the number of steps random and do not always increase, make it easier for your dog by decreasing the distance, and keep the number of steps random. Remember to click and treat to help your dog succeed

Each week we'll share a Taming Tip for you, your family and friends to do with your dog(s)! These tips will help teach your dog real world manners in a fun way. Leave us a comment and tell us how it went!

Taming Tip #16:

Want to polish off your down-stay? Take your dog to the busiest room of the house and ask your dog to down-stay, while your family / friends are walking around the room or while there are other distractions present such as people snacking on food, kids playing, etc. To help keep your dog in position, click and treat every few seconds. Practice this often, maybe once in the morning and once in the evening. Remember to keep your training short, we suggest 5 minutes and under.

Taming Tip #15:

What behavior does your dog do that really bothers you? Pick a behavior that you would like for him to do and take a few minutes each morning and evening to teach a preferred behavior. For example, if your dog is jumping up, right before he jumps ask him to sit and then click and treat the sit. When your dog begins to offer the desired behavior instead of the unwanted behavior remember to reinforce with a treat!

Taming Tip #14:

Do your dogs go nuts when someone comes to your door? Practice our Taming Tip and help them have good manners. Have your dog stay near the front door in either a sit or a down position while you slightly open and close the door. (Be careful so that your dog cannot get out.) Practice with your dog in short intervals throughout the day. Make sure you reward your dog for sitting or laying calmly by the door. When your dog is able to stay calmly by the door, start adding in other distractions such as someone knocking, or ringing the doorbell. Take baby steps so that your dog will succeed!!!!!

Taming Tip #11:

This week introduce your dog to at least five new people! As people approach, have your dog sit, and then the person they are saying hello to can pet them. Reward your dog with a treat for sitting and being nice. If your dog is a little timid when meeting strangers, have the person give them a treat and then they can pet your dog under their chin, if your dog is comfortable.

Taming Tip #10:

Take your dog and sit outside on your front or back porch, or go to a park and sit on a bench or just on the grass. Relax with your dog and every time your dog gets quiet when distractions appear, click and give him a treat. If your dog is focused on a distraction, patiently wait, and when he turns and looks at you click and give him a treat for checking in with you

Taming Tip #9: It's a great time to walk your dog outside! Practice good manners with your dog on your walk! Have your dog sit before visiting with others, sit before entering or leaving buildings and most important have them sit at curbs before crossing the street. Now ... get out there and enjoy your dog!!!

Taming Tip #8:

In honor of our Scent Class, this week's Taming Tip is all about the NOSE! This will be a blast for your dog! Take your dog's favorite treats and hide them throughout your backyard. While you are hiding the treats be sure to leave your dog inside the house. When you open the door to let him out, tell him to "Go find it!". Then watch your dog play this natural hunting game! In the beginning, if your dog is having trouble, walk him over to one of the treats, point to it and tell him to "Go find it"! Make the game easy at first and then challenge your dog by making it harder! You can also play this game inside the house, and if you have more than one dog, let them play one at a time.

Taming Tip #7:

This week practice calling your dog from different rooms in your house! While your dog is resting or distracted in one room, you move to another room and call him/her. When your dog gets to you click and treat! Practice this a couple of times a day, moving to every room of your house, even the bathroom. Your dog will get to the point where they can't wait to run to you! Have everyone in your family play this game. Just imagine if everyone in your house called to you and when you got there they had chocolate, cheesecake or cupcakes with yummy icing waiting for you! That is how excited your dog will be! Have fun

Taming Tip #6:

This week's Taming Tip is in honor of our Reading Education Assistance Dogs! Grab a blanket, snuggle up with your dog in your favorite spot and read to him / her for 15 minutes. As a special reward, give your dog a treat while you're reading. Our goal is to help your dog stay in a relaxed state while cuddling together. You may repeat this exercise as many times as you want. Send pictures of you reading with your companion to terri@tamingthewildside.com and we'll put them on our blog.

Taming Tip #4:

This is a great game to improve your dog's recall. Wait until your dog is in another area of your house, then go hide in another room and call your dog very exuberantly, using his name or the word "come". When your dog finds you, give him a treat. Play this game three or four times a day and see if your dog runs to you faster each time!
