Friday's Foster - Take a Look at Defi!

Contributed by a CP Volunteer

Let’s shine the light a bit brighter on this spunky little lady in Texas!

Do you still need some help keeping that resolution to get out and walk more?  Well, Miss Defi is a great walking companion, and fitness coach, taking each stride with purpose, as though she had a mission to complete!

This sweet little girl has worked hard to lose a few pounds, putting new spring in her step that belies her 12.6 years of age!  She may be the oldest Foster currently in Foster Care with Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network (CPCRN), but don’t tell her that!  One look at her little video portraits and you will have no doubt our little Defi is full of life!

Back in 2011, Defi had the sad misfortune of losing her elderly parents.  Someone took her in, but they didn’t understand the Cairn personality, so she was brought to a shelter.  There, they examined her carefully and it was determined that she was heartworm positive, which would have been bad enough by itself, but it put her at additional risk.

You see, shelters do not make sick dogs available for adoption, and they don’t treat them either.  This sad little girl’s days were numbered, but CPCRN stepped in and took her into Foster Care, making sure she had the lengthy and expensive treatment to rid her of this terrible illness, and now she is certified to be 100% heartworm free!

Defi is a real cuddle bunny, but she also loves to exercise her Cairn instincts, barking at the ducks and the rabbits, and whatever else runs wild in the neighborhood - but most especially dancing and barking for dinner!

A very special little girl, defying the odds as she overcame so many obstacles, Defi is 100% ready to cuddle in your arms and help you to overcome any emptiness you may have in your heart and home!

Won't you consider letting her share her golden years with you?

You can learn more about her by following this link.  She is currently being fostered in Texas but transport solutions are available to get her to you!

Friday's Fosters - Smyrna and Hazel

Contributed by Smyrna and Hazel's foster Mom

If you scroll down, you can see the posts we ran yesterday to introduce you to these two lively older cairn girls, a mother and daughter who are being fostered in Vermont. Maybe you have room in your home and your heart for both of these girls.

Today, we'd like to share this photo album of these two so you can get to know them a little better. Please click here to see them (in Vermont) and all of the other cairns that Col. Potter presently has available for adoption.

IN THE FOSTER SPOTLIGHT!!

UPDATE: We are very pleased to announce that Zander has found his forever family! Are you looking for a TERRIFIC TERRIER? Check out our available cairns! Look for Zander and other "Happily Ever After" stories on our Post Adoption blog.

Written by Zander's Foster Mom

Zander is a survivor. He was extremely underweight at only 11 pounds and suffered from a bacterial skin infection which had caused significant hair loss to his flanks and his entire tail. The fur on his nose was all worn off, probably from being confined to a cage (at some point in his life) for a very long time. He was considered unadoptable due to his hair loss. Thankfully, a local rescue person spotted him at the shelter where he had been picked up in April as a stray.

Col. Potter rescued Zander and he was neutered, had his teeth taken care of and was started on a regimen to regain his health and his coat. Our vet estimated his age at approximately seven years. He was very deconditioned at first and was carried up and down stairs and given food and water every 2-3 hours to keep him hydrated and well nourished. He responded very well to his treatments including a switch to corn free-wheat free food and now weighs 17 pounds, scoots up and downstairs by himself and has received medical clearance to be adopted!

He has been in his foster home since early May. Watching him blossom has been a joy. We don't believe that he ever lived in a house before. He is housebroken and will let you know if he needs an extra trip outside. In many ways, it is like watching a child's milestones, first time his tail stood up straight and stayed up! first time he shook for treats, first time he brought the ball back! and medically, when he stopped coughing and his fur really started to grow back. He is developing a cairn "physique" and lopes when he runs as his muscles become stronger.

He has learned to accept the love and companionship of his foster cairn "sisters" , the cats (we caught him kissing White Kitty this morning!) and his foster Mom and Dad. He seeks attention with a cute little stretch where his head goes up while his body leans back or he nudges you with his nose. He enjoys spending time in foster Mom's lap. He likes to help Foster Dad in his office by trying to pull the papers out of the printer for him! He is settling in to the household routines.

He is not too sure about some household noises like the can opener and the garbage disposal but he is getting a little better with them. He is very industrious and has given himself the job of standing at the full view front door and keeping an eye on things. If he gets noisy, we just shut the door and he gets the idea. He is very smart, has a sweet disposition and he aims to please. He loves to ride in the car and gets along well with the other dogs off leash at the dog park. He likes his chew toys and has a favorite that he takes to bed with him.

Zander needs his own forever home. He hopes that someone will overlook his "possum tail" and open their heart and home to him. Foster Mom saw some fur sprouting on the top of his tail with a magnifying glass the other day and it is furring up underneath too. His pictures and videos show you how far his journey has taken him - wouldn't you like to take him the rest of the way? He's ready to come to your house!

Please watch his videos to see his story and how far he has come.

Friday's Foster

Written by a CP Media Editor

Have you ever looked into the eyes of an angel? Well that’s what you will be doing when you adopt our little Courtois (pronounced Code-a-way). As a matter of fact he is an angel with hazel eyes. Yes, that’s right, a cairn with hazel eyes and a very light colored nose. This young man will melt your heart with his quick sense of humor and his natural cairn attitude. He will always be looking for his next big adventure, loving life and everyone that shows him love. Doesn’t take much, belly rubs, a new toy, a tasty treat, and that is all it will take. Now that summer has arrived so has Courtois the water loving dog. He is first in line to dive in the doggie pool, splashing and playing to cool off. He gets along well with all his foster brothers and is always looking for someone to play with him. At almost two years old, Courtois is an alpha kind of guy so letting him know his boundaries will be an important part of his training and loving.

And then there’s food and treats. Now I enjoy my food with the best of them, but he’s a guy that doesn’t want to be messed with when it comes to his food bowl. A few etiquette lessons will be needed to let him know that he will never have to go hungry in his new loving home. This feisty little redhead is looking for that special family or person that will help Courtois look for his next big adventure. Could you be the one? I dare you to look into those hazel eyes one more time…..

Take a Look at Me Now!

UPDATE: We are very pleased to announce that Colonel has found his forever family! Are you looking for a TERRIFIC TERRIER? Check out our available cairns! Look for Colonel and other "Happily Ever After" stories on our Post Adoption blog.

Written by a CP Media Volunteer

Colonel is back in the spotlight to ask you if your heart has room for a special guy. He loves his foster Mom in New Mexico but he is ready for a forever home of his own. Won't you take another look at him?

Dogs from commercial breeding facilities spend their lives in cramped cages with little exercise or loving interaction from humans. They live in their cages with little or no veterinary care or training. It is amazing how resilient they are when given the opportunity.

Colonel spent 6 years in a commercial breeding facility. He faced his new freedom with courage and determination. He has gone from stiff joints due to inactivity to exploring the yard with a cute lope as he investigates his new surroundings and chases and plays with his foster sister. She is a lot more fun than toys.

He likes to cozy up to his foster mom and moves her hand off the computer keyboard when is time to pay more attention to him and give him skritches. He loves to sit outdoors with the other dogs and his foster family. He is still shy around strangers but he warms up once he gets to know them.

Housetraining is proving to be one of his greatest challenges but he is making great strides. He wears a belly band and stays dry for 4 hours at a time. Foster Mom thinks that with a few extra trips outside and some consistency he could be very far along in a matter of a few weeks.

Colonel says:

I want to be your velcro dog. If you are home alot and have time to spend with me I will fill your heart with love and joy. I have one floppy ear so you can always spot me in a crowd. I would like to keep your girl dog company too- I love to play with girls and I would like to be the only boy dog. I need someone who likes to takes me outside and give me a special blueberry treat when I potty outside. Of course I may keep you busy at first! I would love the chance to join your "furmily"

Friday's Foster

Written by a CP Media Editor

TGIF, Thank God it’s Friday because now you get to meet Kanya, a very special little girl who is our “Friday’s Foster” this week. And let me tell you, this little lady is all girl, thus the meaning of her Thai name; “Girl”, also meaning “Younger Daughter”! This black brindle beauty has the energy of a puppy when it comes to play time. Kanya is not lacking when it comes to cairn personality. Her house training is coming along and she is just so proud of herself after she goes outside. She has started learning beginner commands like “sit” and “no bark”. Looks and brains too, what a package!! One thing for sure, Kanya loves toys, especially the ones that make noise. But after all the playing is done, nap time is no problem for Kanya either. She loves the comfort of her crate so that she can catch up on her beauty sleep. A girl never has enough of that.

Kanya needs a loving family that will give her the home she deserves. She is very friendly; her wagging tail shows you how much love she has in her heart and it will never skip a beat. She wants to be that special “Girl” for you.

Friday's Foster

Written by a CP Media Editor

This Friday’s featured foster is Fear, Free from Fear that is. This little lady spent the first three years of her life in a commercial breeding facility. Those years were hard on her and contributed to the loss of vision in one of her eyes.

Mattie, as her foster family has nicknamed her, is taking steps towards trust and needs a forever home to help her become the happy Cairn girl she was meant to be. She prefers women and would probably benefit from having a fur brother or sister.

Little Mattie likes to cuddle and would love to have her very own forever family to teach her what ‘the good life’ is all about. Watch her video and consider helping her live up to her Col. Potter name, Free from Fear.

Friday's Foster

A belly rub, a walk, a healthy dinner and a soft bed to sleep in are all Hampton asks for. Sadly, Hampton hasn't always had even the basic care every pet needs.

The journey of this very distinguished gentleman into Col. Potter began when he was surrendered to a New York police station. He was then sent to Animal Control, where his future was grim at best. Fortunately he found his way out of that shelter into the arms of one of our Canadian foster families.

Hampton had a few medical issues, all of which have been taken care of in part by his "Guardian Angels". One of his issues was a large bladder stone which was removed in a 2 hour 45 minute surgery. Even though he must have been experiencing quite a bit of discomfort, he didn't have one accident in his foster home. Most of his problems might have been very minor had they been caught earlier by regular veterinary care. Many might not have occurred at all.

This 12 years young boy has been a real trooper, taking all the changes he has been experiencing in stride. Even though his life has been turned inside-out over the last few months, he still wags his tail for everyone he greets. This mellow gentlemen with superb manners is ready to spend some quality time with his forever family. And we think he deserves the very best - are you that home?

Rosemont would love to be your Valentine. Would you be hers?

Cupid is shooting arrows for Rosemont, this weeks featured foster. This Cairn cutie is easy to fall in love with. She is soaking up all the new experiences she can and enjoying every minute of it. Rosemont is learning manners and loves her foster mom and dad, but would really love her very own forever family.

Rosemont, affectionately known as ‘Rosie’, loves to romp and play with her foster brother and sisters. If you see this girl in action, you wouldn’t guess that she is seven, she has the spunk and zest of a two year old. She is training easily with her foster family and would be the perfect addition to a loving home.

Friday's Foster

Please say hello to Ms. Divinity! She was rescued by Col. Potter in December and is now ready for a home to call her own. She is a charming, strawberry blond girl who is still finding her "inner cairn". She has learned how to "kill" her Foster Mom's yarn, steal toys from her Foster siblings and initiate play. Learning to play is a big accomplishment for little girls who have worked all their life producing puppies!

Divinity is a true lady, she seldom barks, doesn't jump up on the furniture, loves both men and women and is very generous with her kisses. Check out her video and watch for her little smile at the end. Who could resist that?!?

If your home is in need of a charming little princess fill out an adoption application! To read more about Ms. Divinity visit our website.

Friday's Foster

Shipwreck is our featured foster this week and this little guy is far from being a wreck. He is an excellent first mate! He LOVES tummy rubs, squeaky toys, tennis balls, Foster Mom's grandkids and his kibble. This boy just LOVES to LOVE! He is also a great kisser and a great dancer. With Valentine's Day coming up what more could you ask for?!?

He has a little trouble with his eyesight, but he certainly doesn't let that keep him from playing and having fun! Due to his poor vision he needs a Forever Family that is willing to help him out by not constantly rearranging the furniture or leaving obstacles in his path. What a small sacrifice to make for this sweetheart!

If you are looking for a special guy in your life, fill out an adoption application and let's get this little Romeo in his Forever Home in time for Valentine's Day!

Friday's Foster

Dayton was rescued by Col. Potter in early November and is thriving in his foster home. He is full of energy and love, which is no surprise. If you have an active household in need of a little charmer, maybe he's just what you need. Fill out an adoption application fast cause this little guy doesn't like to wait!

Friday's Foster

Reading, also known as Tillie, was rescued from a puppy mill in September 2008 and is enjoying the life of freedom. Good food and clean water? Check! Toys? You betcha! Love? Of course! (Who could resist that face?!) A home to call her own? Well … we are working on that one!

Tillie is a very kind hearted, sweet and gentle cairn that is ready to start the next chapter of her life. She is still a little shy but enjoys riding in the car, walking around the neighborhood, and playing with her toys. She would also love to have a furry little brother or sister or maybe even a puppy all her own!

Are you ready to help her write that final chapter where she lives happily ever after? Will your home be the one where she learns to fully trust again? It can be! Fill out an adoption application and let this sweet girl take over your home and heart!
