Buddy fka CP Sainted Riley and his New Sister, Lena!

Our first Foster boy, Sainted Riley (now Buddy) was adopted almost 5 yrs. ago by a wonderful guy in Ohio.  He got married 2 years ago and, in early July, they had a new baby girl, Lena.

Adam wrote to me a few months ago and asked if I had any suggestions as to how to prepare Buddy and Mia (he also adopted his Foster girl) for Lena's arrival.

I told him to buy a large baby doll and to wrap it up in a blanket and carry it around, rock it at night, and put it in the swing and crib various times during the day/evening.  I told him to let the Cairns sniff and lay next to the pretend baby, but to teach them not to step on the baby or to yank or pull the blanket.

I also told him to bring home a receiving blanket from the hospital that Lena had been swaddled in - and the messier the blanket the better!

He did all of those things, and they are doing great - especially Buddy!  They are always with them, as in right next to them at all times, but Adam and his wife are extremely please with the canine/baby bonding process.

SAY HELLO TO CP's TAR HEELS

One of the really wonderful things about Col. Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue is that we have such great volunteers all across the USA and Canada! We are really like a huge, international family with cousins, aunts, uncles, grandmas and grandpas in every corner and just about anywhere one would visit, there is a CP family member not too far away. The CP Family has large "reunions" called CRAPs but some of our family members hold individual, personal reunions themselves called POOPs. Last fall, one family member had a small POOP at her home in North Carolina. Besides the camaraderie and love of Cairns they share in their hearts, they also gave monetarily from their hearts donating to name two Cairns. What a wonderful concept, friendship, companionship, watching our Cairns frolic and play, while still raising funds to help future Cairns.

Yesterday three little Cairns became the recipients of their generosity. The "Tar Heels" found love and freedom with Col. Potter, but wait ...there are going to be additions to the Tar Heels. It just so happens that not one, but both of the little girls are pregnant and due to whelp within the next two weeks, one of them probably within the next few days. Without wonderful events like the one held by Kitty K. last fall that produced this donation, we wouldn't be able to help these Cairns or allow their puppies to be born into freedom.

Introducing CP's Tar Heels:

Salisbury: Female, black brindle, born 5/12/07 - due to whelp in 7-10 days and looks like 8 puppies in her litter

Carolina: Female, wheaten, born 5/21/08 - due to whelp any minute and looks like 6 puppies in her litter

Foster: Male, red wheaten, born 3/1/05

Carolina is in her foster home with Kathy and Barney and Salisbury will be heading to her foster home Wednesday with Lori and Mike. It shouldn't be long until we have little Tar Heels to add to our CP family!!

WRAPPING UP 2010 AND WHAT A START TO 2011!!

The final figures have been tallied and totalled for CP 2010 Intakes .... and DRUM ROLL .... Thanks to Col. Potter and everyone who makes Col. Potter possible ... 385 Cairns were rescued and welcomed into the loving arms of Col. Potter in 2010!!! This is down slightly from both 2008 and 2009 by about 9%. Col. Potter ended 2010 with a GRAND TOTAL SINCE INCEPTION of 2,999 Cairns rescued.

2011 Intakes started off the year yesterday with the arrival of Ticonderoga who just happens to be NUMBER 3000!!! This is certainly quite an accomplishment and one everyone associated with Col. Potter can certainly be proud of!

We all know 2010 was a tough year on CP resources -- financially, shortage of foster homes, needing more volunteers to process the number of Cairns needing help, etc. All indications are 2011 will be much the same. We had to cut back on the number of Cairns we were able to help in 2010. I'm really hoping we won't have to make any further cuts in 2011.

I would like to say THANK YOU for your past help and ask you once again to open up your hearts, homes, wallets and precious time to help these little furkids that can't help themselves. Start a coin collection can, or pack a lunch and see how quickly the money adds up to donate and help the Cairns. Consider becoming a foster home, what's one more food bowl on the counter or crate on the floor? Get involved -- join a CP team and become an active volunteer -- there's something for every one! The Cairns need us now more than ever ...

Poor Missy just can't catch a break! Yesterday I found that she has CaOx crystals in her urine so she'll likely have to go on a special diet for her entire life. It's not a really restrictive diet but it will make it harder for her to find a forever home.

Then she woke Alan up at 6 am wanting to go potty. He took her out and she peed and then her pooh was soup. At 8 am she threw up in her crate. The only thing I can think of is that Iopened a new can of 95% beef dog food. I hope she's allergic to beef as that would be fairly easy. I'm cooking 3 lbs. of chicken legs in the crockpot to make her some sodium free broth as sodium is totally off the chart for dogs with CaOx.

Missy has gone through so much and she is just the brightest little kidlet. She is much braver these days although if Janna barks she retreats to her bed (okay, make that Gilly's bed ).
If we're outside with her and Janna barks she cowers behind which ever adult is out there with her. She was quite fearful of Alan at first but is getting over that. I'm able to teach her tricks that no one else has ever learned so quickly here ,other than Elf and Benji who are at the Bridge and my Gilly who went to an obedience class. Gilly is enjoying showing her tricks and behaviors...and garnering the treats that come along with training.

I've attached some photos. The first one is of her stretched up against my leg to inveigle me to hand over her goodie for pottying. She is usually very good about doing a sit for her goodies....but she was a tad eager. After a few shots of Missy I put the Christmas jingle bell scrunchie on Gilly.

Auntie Mary J., thank you so much for my beautiful hand crocheted blankie I will cherish it. Foster mom said she will make sure I get my use out of it as it also gets cold here in southeast Texas. Hope you like the pictures, my foster mom snuck up on me to take them.

Foster Rosso's aka (Trusty-Rusty) latest adventure!

Nope - he didn't escape, and no he hasn't killed any more critters (though a mouse had a near miss last week when hubby flushed one out hiding under the bird bath).....while I was walking him this morning he stuck his muzzle into a clump of burrs. The little itty bitty ones that stick to everything....especially doggy fur. I didn't see it happen but on the way back (we were in a field next to the house) he rubbed his face on the ground.

I thought he found something stinky! When we got back in the house I was giving him his biscuit and see the little nasties all around his mouth and nose. Yikes - right down to the skin. Amazingly (after I put him on the washing machine) he let me pull each one off. There was no way to cut them out b/c it was too close to his eyes and not even enough room to get the scizzors underneath. I was afraid I would be sending out an SOS for ideas to get these off of him!

I think I know where he found them so we will be avoiding that corner from now on.

It's never a dull day with Trusty-Rusty in the house.

Smyrna and Hazel - CPCRN Foster Girls

If you scroll down, you can see the posts we ran yesterday to introduce you to these two lively older cairn girls, a mother and daughter who are being fostered in Vermont. Maybe you have room in your home and your heart for both of these girls.

Silk's video debut

Silk is 8 years old and she was rescued last year and had her last litter of pups in the loving arms of Col. Potter. She is currently being fostered in Virginia and you can go to our website to learn more about her and all of the wonderful cairns we have that are available for adoption.

She came to B&B with us last month and despite her fears she seemed to thrive on the change so we decided to foster her.

Silk is so sweet and is learning that humans CAN be good - especially when they give you body rubs and ear scritches. She absolutely loves Ed and the feeling is mutual. The first day we had her he was sending me pictures of her on the phone with the caption "The little princess."

But Silk is MOST happy when she can run around outside. Unfortunately we live in a townhouse and have a very small yard, but on our recent visit to West Virginia she was able to take advantage of our big fenced area there and she ran and galloped and cavoted, all the time with a big doggie smile on her face.

I managed to capture some of it on video (she's afraid of the camera) and will be sending to be added to her web listing. I really hope this touches someone willing to give this little mill mama a chance. She's the first "typical" mill mama we've fostered and I have to say that we all (including our sons) rejoice with every new brave step she takes.

Silk is the wheaten in the purple harness running around and doing a little dance. Chewy is the larger wheaten doing his Eeyore shuffle.

DISCLAIMER: It may look like the dogs are running loose in the middle of the woods, but actually we were on a "trail" right next to the cabin (the cabin was directly to the left I just never got it in the shot) and there's a wire fence through the trees on the right side of the trail and then across behind where Ed is standing in the red shirt. If we take them any further up the trail we then put a leash on them. Believe me - I would NEVER let them run loose in the woods of West Virginia!!

A New Leash on Life for Dressing - life begins anew with CP!!!

"Now you see", whispers my husband into the little red ear.. "the white shirts are called the Steelers and the dark shirts are called the Ravens and this is a football game... and you can cheer for whomever you like"

And the little mill girl has settled right down onto his chest. Her head is not down yet.. but this is her very first trip into the living room and her first experience of Foster Dad's deep, calm voice... and like always.. it is working. They are just sitting together and he is talking to her about football and petting her so very gently

Little Dressing is only 12 pounds and she has the typical mill dog nose .. black and hairless from poking her little face as far into freedom as she could get. To add to her scars there is a large black patch of hairless skin on her back. I think it is caused by being in a too small cage and having to lay with her back against the wire.

Mr Drumstick went with us on another car ride today to meet his foster Mom in Minnesota. So I am sure that Marge will tell you all about him.

But Dressing is staying with us for a while and as I promised.. I have some pictures of the little lady.

Tallulah Bean...what ARE you doing?

Tallulah Bean's foster mom, in Vancouver BC, managed to get her camera and catch these pictures of Col. Potter's amazing tree climber. The picture is of a tree in foster mom's back yard that has ivy growing up it.

I wrote to her and said, "As your foster mentor, I commend you on how Tallulah Bean is wearing her CP harness, nice and snug, but .......where is her parachute??"

Now that this little Southern gal is up here in Canada, maybe we need to get her a plaid lumberjack coat? She looks as if she should have a chain saw slung to her harness.

Welcome Erica and Nigel Thomas!

Several weeks ago, a PM in Virginia was raided, shutdown and the dogs seized. CPCRN had made contact at the time but they were still in the process of sorting, evaluating and treating the many dogs. This week, CP was contacted by the County Animal shelter for help with two Cairns.

Please help me welcome Erica and Nigel Thomas!

Erica is named after the All My Children vixen Erica Kane. She is 5 years old, 15 pounds and it's apparent she recently whelped puppies. You can see how her coat was butchered obviously to shorten it up for ease of the nursing puppies, and she has the saggy milk sacks and large nipples from recently nursing. On top of all of this Erica has tested HEARTWORM POSITIVE. We are looking for a foster home that is located on the east coast and an easy transport, where Erica will be able to spend her time relaxing while she undergoes heartworm treatment. If you have room in your heart and your home to help Erica through her treatment, please contact us.

Nigel Thomas is 6 years old, 17 pounds, has fleas and an ear infection. He's quite a rough, hairy mass right now, but I just know that after a bath, stripping and a little grooming, there is one handsome hunk of a Cairn there!

With it being Easter weekend, these two definitely have been touched by a higher power and have risen from the Hell of a PM to find themselves in the loving arms of CP where they will now be able to get their happily ever after. Their Easter baskets are now full of hope, care and love ...

Welcome Mickey D!

Please welcome Mickey D, a 5 year old owner surrender to Col. Potter.

This is one beautiful guy, and he is a big boy. He weighs in at 20 pounds so he is officially on a diet with Foster Mom and Foster Sister. A bit too much Mickey D's for us perhaps? He doesn't need to lose ALOT, but definitely could benefit from a drop in weight.

Mickey D is a terrific little guy who is 100% Cairn. He loves to play ball. Mickey D is very full of himself and his ears and tail are held high. He's a snuggler too!

He knows commands, sit, stay and come. Mickey D is also a very good watch dog. He'll bark when he hears something out of order, but becomes quiet quickly. He's completely housebroken and has not attempted to mark in the house.

This guy is ready for a forever home. He can't wait to be the apple of someone's eye! Can you tell that I think he's perfect?

From A Pauper To A Princess - The Journey of a Puppy Mill Dog

Karen, one of CPCRN's foster mentors, has graciously allowed us access to her diary documenting the journey of Flopsy, also known as Rusty, from the puppy mill to her forever home. The diary will be broken up into short sections and posted. Check back for new entries in the series entitled "From A Pauper To A Princess - The Journey of a Puppy Mill Dog".

4/14/07
Today, we picked up our new foster Flopsy aka Rusty, in San Diego. She flew in from Missouri. She is nearly paralyzed with fear. I think we are going to have a long haul ahead of us with Rusty and getting her ready for her adoptive home. She has absolutely no facial or body expressions. We haven’t even seen a slight wag of the tail. Those D^%* Puppy Millers have literally stripped the life out of this girl! I am hopeful that over the next several weeks, we can teach her to trust and enjoy her new life.

4/17/07
5:30 a.m. Took Rusty outside for potty. She does her business. Frantically paces around the yard. Stops on occasion to see what I am doing. We go back into the house, Rusty reluctantly comes in. Tony helps me catch Rusty to put in her x-pen for breakfast. Rusty has a good appetite and finishes her meal in no time, however, she will not eat in front of me.

I take her back outside for potty. She paces around the perimeter of the yard.

I put Rusty in the x-pen while I am at work; no more crates for this girl during the daytime hours!

3:00 p.m. Come home from work; there are no accidents in the x-pen! Take Rusty outside for potty and she frantically paces the backyard. You can literally see the fear in her eyes. I take a towel out onto the grass and sit there. Rusty runs circles around me, over and over again. I have Tony help me catch her and we sit on the towel and pet her. She stands there frozen, unsure what to do. She eventually walks away and begins doing her pacing around the yard. She ventures close by us, but not too close, so we can’t touch her.

Inside, Rusty does continuous circles around the kitchen island. She is so scared and unsure of herself, it is breaking my heart. I hate what those D^%* millers have done to her!

We brought a large crate into the living room, so Rusty could be close and watch us interact w/ our fur kids. She started to relax and eventually fell asleep.

At bedtime, when Rusty was in her crate, she started to whine when I left the room!! This is the first we have heard from her. Funny, she doesn’t want to be near us, but doesn’t like when she isn’t near us! Rusty still won’t take treats from my hands.

Another Addition to the CP Family!

Allow me to introduce one of the latest CP fosters! She is an owner surrender, 7 year old grey/black/splash of red brindle. Her name is Hedda (HED ah) which is Germanic for female warrior. Welcome Hedda!! Isn't she a BEAUTY???

Introducing January's History Kids!

Saturday, four little Cairns made it to the loving arms of Col. Potter thanks to a rescue angel who attended an auction in Ohio. The four spent the night with the rescue angel and then headed to Oz Project bright and early Sunday morning.

There are many historical events that took place in the month of January. These four precious babies are named after some of those events:

#1943 Galileo: Male, DOB 1/14/05 - On January 7, 1610, Galileo Galilei sighted four of Jupiter's moons - Let's hope our Galileo has a life that is simply over the moon!

#1944 Edison: Male, DOB 8/25/07 - On January 27, 1880, Thomas Edison received a patent for his electric incandescent lamp - May our little Edison's life be as bright!

#1945 Ross: Male, DOB 9/16/07 - On January 1, 1752, Flag maker Betsy Ross was born in Philadelphia - Our little Ross is a true symbol of freedom!

#1946 Pearl: Female, DOB 9/16/07 - On January 20, 1887, Pearl Harbor was leased by the United States from Hawaii for a naval station - Little Pearl will only have smooth sailing from now on!

The PM kids keep flooding in to Col. Potter this month. We have several more groups of PM kids still scheduled to come in before the end of January. This is their chance at freedom, at living happily ever after ... and we don't want to turn any away! But we really could use more foster homes, please APPLY TODAY!

Valor's Going Home!

The surgeon is in awe at how well Valor is doing! He has been standing, looking for attention and just wants to be held. They have removed the morphine IV as they believe that was making him ill and causing the vomiting. He still has a catheter, but that is to help keep him clean and dry while crated. Valor's incisions all look good, they are all clean, with no sign of any infection and he is leaving them alone. Valor will be ready to leave the clinic on Saturday and start his new life!

Now for the really neat part, a vet tech at the emergency clinic he was at initially, fell in love with Valor and has applied to foster him. This is a wonderful opportunity for professional care and help with his physical therapy during his recuperation.
