Recently a member of the Intake Team, Tina, lost a beloved furkid, Rusty. His time had come after many years of devoted companionship and love. A final sad farewell was said, tears were shed and hearts were aching as Rusty left on his final journey to the Rainbow Bridge. He was once again young, healthy and ran with no pain. Meanwhile hundreds of miles away another family's heart was aching, tears were shed and a final sad farewell was said as they turned their beautiful, young red cairn over to a local humane society. Due to economic hardships, the family could no longer provide for him and get the medical treatment he needed. This 17 month old cairn was brought to the shelter with infected eyes and suspected dry eye. The parallels of these two events seemed to be fate at work.
The name Rusty means one with red hair. An old English variant of Rusty is Rustyn. In honor of Rusty, this beautiful red cairn boy will be called Rustyn. Rustyn is a young, sociable and happy cairn who is already housebroken. He was raised with children and loves to play. Some of his favorite things are belly rubs, Kongs, walks, belly rubs, eating, playing, belly rubs, running, treats and - can you guess what's next?? Yes, more belly rubs. Affection is high on his list. Rustyn very patiently accepts the eye medicine routine. His eyes have greatly improved in the short time he has been on medication. Rustyn is looking forward to life with a new family.
Shelters and humane societies are limited to how many dogs they can save or help in this economic environment. Their resources for medical care have been cut to the bare minimum. The shelter pleaded for help for Rustyn to get him out of the shelter environment. When Col. Potter walked out the door of the shelter with Rustyn, there were hugs, cheers and tears from the shelter staff. If not for all the supporters of Col. Potter, a different fork in the road may have been the only path left for Rustyn. Thanks to all of you, Rustyn will see a brighter tomorrow.
