The stage was once again set last weekend for the next Rocktober Stars to make their appearance. These Stars have come out of obscurity and hard times to make their appearance on the CP stage. But with the support and encouragement of Col. Potter, I know these Rocktober Stars are destined for a very bright future and much success!
Now, a round of applause for:

Last Thursday, a rescue pick-up started traveling across the state of Missouri picking up dogs from commercial breeding facilities that didn't want them anymore. In total, more than 200 dogs were rescued from these facilities.
I was contacted to see if Col. Potter would be able to help with six Cairns. Initially, I had to say no because of the lack of foster homes and asked that they contact other Cairn rescues. As the pick-up date became closer, it was apparent the Cairns would have no other rescue to help them. I said yes hoping that foster homes would become available.
And so, last weekend, two of our dedicated volunteers were on the road at 5:00 AM traveling 4 hours one way to the meeting place to pick-up six Cairns. But, when they arrived, there were EIGHT Cairns including a PREGNANT female!
Then the waiting for word from the vet, was she really pregnant and if so how far along and how many? PREGNANT was the verdict, due to whelp in approximately 3 weeks with at least 2 puppies, probably more! Next challenge, how do we get her to her foster home as quickly and as safely as possible?
Enter another dedicated volunteer, a woman in a wheelchair. She immediately offered to do whatever was necessary to get this pregnant girl to her foster mom. After many back and forth phone calls, emails and strategy, it was decided that our pregnant mom would fly in cabin with the volunteer to her foster mom. On top of it all, our compassionate, flying volunteer is getting a new foster that we were having a hard time transporting to her via ground, so we will move him and we will do a switch where she will deliver the pregnant mom and she will get her foster and he will fly back home with her in cabin.
A little bit about our pregnant girl, she's 8 years old, which means she's probably about to whelp her 15th litter of puppies. YES, I said 15th. She's very shy and scared. Yesterday she had a nice warm bath, followed by a second one this morning. She was groomed and had some of the matts and long hair trimmed off her along with her nails trimmed. AND, her final litter of puppies will be delivered with all the comforts and care of the finest hospital courtesy of her foster mom and her family.
And, now, I am honored to present the Fabrics to Keep You Warm:

Tallulah Bean...what ARE you doing?
Contributed by Tallulah's foster mom's mentor
Tallulah Bean's foster mom, in Vancouver BC, managed to get her camera and catch these pictures of Col. Potter's amazing tree climber. The picture is of a tree in foster mom's back yard that has ivy growing up it.
I wrote to her and said, "As your foster mentor, I commend you on how Tallulah Bean is wearing her CP harness, nice and snug, but .......where is her parachute??"
Now that this little Southern gal is up here in Canada, maybe we need to get her a plaid lumberjack coat? She looks as if she should have a chain saw slung to her harness.
You can learn more about Tallulah Bean on the CP Cairn Rescue website.

A New Little Girl Joins the CP Family and she's got a big surprise for us!!

Joie's new room at her foster home
Last week, a cute little 4 year old girl made her way into the loving arms of CP. Joie de vivre means joy of living in French and this little one personifies that thought! She has some big news to share with you after her foster mom took her to the vet! We'll let her tell you in her own words:
Dere Fambly,
My name is Joie, but you can just call me Joy. I just got to CP this week, so I'm kinda new. I'm quiet and sweet and last night we went to the vet's to have her meet me. She said, Yep, it's just as we suspected. I am 'with puppy'. Ok, I'm with a few puppies. But it's too early to tell just how MANY puppies. So we're just going to wait until the middle of November and then we'll SEE how many puppies have been growing in my tummy!
And there's a really nice girl here named Mary. Every time I see her I start wagging my tail. She's not scary at all. And she cuddles me and loves me. I really like being with her. Another thing I really like here is the CHEESE! They have a special kind of cheese called Harvarti with Dill. It is YUMMY! Mama says I like it because I'm pregnant. (You know, the pickles?) I think I like it because.......well, hello! It's CHEESE!
When we went to the vet, mama put a pretty red and blue harness on me. (That's me in my new harness in the picture.) And I have a special toy I like already. It's small and soft and round, sort of like a little puppy! I like to sleep in my crate. Mama took the door off, since it was in my expen. For the first few days, I spent most of the time in there, but then I tried out my round Walgreen's bed. Now I spend some time in my bed and some time in my crate! I need lots of rest while those puppies are growing in my tummy!
Well, it's getting late, so I'd better get my beauty sleep. I'm adding 3 pictures. The second one is one Auntie Damyell said I needed to show you. It shows my 'curves' right after my bath. She teased me before I went to the vet, saying if I wasn't pregnant, I'd need to JOIN 'Curves'. The first one is on the way home from the vet. We stopped to get a hamburger for dinner and Mama took it while we were in the drive-thru. Well, she got the hamburger. I just got a french fry with cheese, kind of like a cheese lollipop! Notice how much prettier I am already?
I am so excited! The third picture is my new room! I never had a room before...thank you Col. Potter!

Stingers puppies have turned one month old!
Written by Stinger and her puppies' foster mom
Stinger's puppies are one month old. They are all developing very distinct personalities, and they're becoming more inquisitive and independent now, so they're wanting to spend more time with us outside the box exploring. And yep, we have puppy breath! They range in weight from Slush at the largest at 2#, 2.4 oz to little Swizzle at 1#, 9.2 oz. They all have teeth coming in, starting with their canines - I think Slush had 9 the last time I peeked, and Fizz's seem to come and go, just like a human baby's do with the gums swelling and receding. They've been snacking on puppy formula, and I've upped it to 3 times a day as Stinger seems to spend longer periods outside the box watching them - today I even added a bit of ground up puppy kibble and made a gruel - you should have heard all the smacking going on during that meal! I hope you enjoy them all!

A big THANK YOU to Blanket Auntie Carol for sending them all blankies - she even labeled which one was for which puppy and mom. I'll have to get Stinger's picture with hers at a later date - she couldn't sit still long enough for me to get a picture!

Welcome Andretti to Col. Potter!
Written by a CP Intakes Team volunteer
Andretti is a grey male cairn approximately 1 - 2 years old. He was found out on the streets. His owner could not be found and his finder couldn't keep him. He is an active little boy who loves attention and is super smart! Isn't he a cutie! His expression in the picture says it all.

HAPPY HOWLOWEEN!! SOME SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUR DOGS!!
Written by a CP Media Volunteer
Saratoga
1. Never give them candy of any kind. Chocolate (especially dark and baking chocolate) is very dangerous for dogs and cats. Symptoms of ingesting chocolate may include vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, increased thirst, urination, and heart rate, and even seizures. Candies containing artificial sweetener (xylitol) can be lethal to dogs. Even small amounts can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar, which can than lead to depression, lack of coordination and seizures. The wrappers that the candy comes in can create a choking hazard and/or intestinal blockage.
2. Halloween plants such as pumpkins can produce gastrointestinal upset should pets ingest them which could also lead to intestinal blockage if a large piece is swallowed.
3. Be sure to keep wires and cords from electric lights and other decoration out of reach Dog slove to chew, which may cause damage to their mouths from chards of glass or plastic, or they could get a life-threatening electrical shock.
4. Candles inside of pumpkins could be knocked over. Hot wax could leave bad burns, and fire can cause a severe burn or worse. Consider where candles are placed.
5. If you plan to dress up your dog, make sure it is comfortable in the costume and that is fits well and has no pieces that can be chewed off or caught on anything. It shouldn’t constrict their movement, vision or hearing, or obstruct their ability to breathe or bark. Try the costume on in advance and if your dog isn’t comfortable, consider a bandana or no costume .
6. Be sure to keep your dogs safe. Doorbells and strangers in costumes can be stressful to them. My husband and I take turns sitting outside in a lawn chair with a big bowl of candy and greet the trick-or-treaters that come to our house. This way no one has to ring our doorbell or knock on the door. Secure the entrance so your dog can not dart out.
7. Identification with current information should be present on your dog. If your dog gets out, a harness/collar with ID and/or a microchip increase the chances that your pet will be found and returned to you.
