BooBoo Blizzard Blows into Col. Potter!

BooBoo Blizzard, a 3 year old Brindle Boy

Our furkids are spoiled, pampered, dressed in sweaters and coats to go out and play in the snow; some even wear boots to keep their paws warm and dry.  When they've had enough snow, cold, and ice, they have a nice, warm home inviting them back inside where a treat probably awaits them.  Wouldn't that be nice if all furkids had such a life and didn't have to live out in the elements anymore?

One boy found just such a life today when he became a member of the CP family.  He will no longer have to endure long, cold Winters outside.  He has found the good life!

His name comes from our Name a Rescue Cairn Program.  It is very poignant and meaningful considering where this boy came from and the season...

Please help us give a warm CP welcome to #5287 BooBoo Blizzard, reported to be 3 years old.  His name is donated by Bobbie B. in memory of her son's family dog, Blizzard, who was found as a puppy, abandoned in a snow drift on the side of a country road in AR.  Luckily, Bobbie's son was there, restoring power after an ice storm, and brought him in from the cold.  He had been a much loved family member and was grand daughter Gracie's first dog.  When Gracie was little, she called him BooBoo. 

Intakes has already brought in more furkids thus far in January than during the entire month of December.  Our once comfortable list of available Foster Homes has dwindled down to just a few remaining.  PLEASE consider becoming a Foster Home and helping a furkid like BooBoo Blizzard find a happily ever after.  If you are an approved Foster Home and have room for a foster currently, please let us know.

Name a Rescue Cairn

Toffee, a sweet 5 year old Wheaten boy

We received an email from one of our volunteers about a stray female cairn at her local shelter that needed to be rescued.  We got approval and our volunteer pulled her and delivered her to our vet.

Once at the vet, we found out the little girl is actually a little boy – no one at the shelter looked very closely and the long coat hid the obvious signs!

Toffee is estimated to be 5 years old and weighs 15 lbs.   So far all we know about him is that he seems like a happy boy – lots of tail wagging when greeting people!  He’s currently at the vet for his spa treatment and will be heading to his foster home this coming weekend.

All I Want for Christmas…

Niles here! I am both Handsome and Nice!

Dear Santa,

Niles here...  I wrote a nice letter of introduction to all the potential Homes out there, but given that it is nearly Christmas Eve, I thought that you might consider giving me a little helping hand?  I mean…  Maybe you can keep a sharp eye out for a perfect Forever Home that really needs a swell guy like me?

Perhaps my painting would look Perfect on Your wall?

Perhaps, as you are popping up and down all those chimneys, you might notice a nice home that has a vacant spot on the sofa?  Don’t I look good here on Foster Mom’s sofa?   (She gave me permission to be up here, by the way!)

Maybe my new Home will like me in my spiffy bow tie?

…or maybe in my Patriotic look?

What about my “Party Dog” look???

O.K., the spiffy look?  With my fine, chiseled profile?

Maybe you’ll spot a home with the need for a great companion?  …A smile that needs a good reason to be made?

 

I’m sure you already know what a Good boy I have been, but, in case it slipped your mind - with all the Christmas Lists you have to remember - I am a somewhat mature young man, well beyond all that silly puppy stuff, but still youthful and spry, ready to run around the yard, or the house, playing with my fun-loving Foster sister, or hunting prey. 

I love to play and hunt in the yard!

O.K.!  I’ve finished my patrol and the perimeter is secure!

I do all of my business where business is intended to be done, always, and I never, ever chew on anything that hasn’t been approved by my Foster Mom.  I am very well mannered and well dressed, at least my Foster Mom tells me so - even when she accidentally puts my bow tie on upside-down!!

Say “outside” and I will be waiting at the door!

Anyway, Santa, Sir, please, can you take a minute or so to look into someone’s heart and find a spot that is just perfect for me?  Big or small, I can fill that spot with so much love and respect, I would surely be the Best Christmas gift any good home could ask for!

Tumbleweed Rolls into Col. Potter!

Tumbleweed, 8 year old Wheaten Male

Please welcome this very handsome 17 lb, 8 year old boy!  

Tumbleweed's owners surrendered him to a high intake shelter because of family issues.  Happily, Col. Potter was able to step in to help Tumbleweed find his forever home!  This boy plays well with other dogs and is good with cats!  He also, not surprisingly, enjoys exploring the great outdoors.  Tumbleweed will make his way to his foster home this weekend.

This handsome 2 year old boy is a happy and energetic little guy!  He was originally a shelter stray that got adopted from the shelter.  He lived with his new family for about a year.  When the family needed to find him a new home, a friend of the family took him in, temporarily, hoping to find the right new family.

After several months, and no good prospects coming forward, the Good Samaritan contacted us to see if we could take this little boy.  Fortunately, we could!

Welcome Little Boy Brew!

Please give a warm CP welcome to our new boy, Brew!

This young man - only two years old - found himself in danger of being set free into the woods.  A good Samaritan took him in to save him from that fate, but after a few months, she realized that she was not the best home for him, and reached out to Col Potter.

Now, this young man has entered the ranks of the lucky Cairns in need in the US that are able to join our fold!  He is settling into his foster home, and embarking on a new life where he will be cherished - as all dogs should be!

A Warm Welcome to Little Forester!

 Forester 9 months old

Please welcome little Forester to our Col. Potter clan!  This wee Wheaten dude, all 10 lbs and 9 months of him, was just not fitting in too well with the family who brought him in to live with them.  Those humans, well they just couldn't understand that a Cairn fella’ has things he has to do and places he's gotta’ go.  So the humans thought this little adventurer might do better with somebody who understood a guy like him a little better than they did.  And they called in Col. Potter knowing that we were just the ticket for what this little dude needed.  So Forester packed his bags and came on over to be with us.

Welcome Smuckers to the CP family!

Everyone has seen the Smuckers jam commercials! "With a name like Smuckers, it's gotta be good". Recently " Well, today was a particularly "good" day for this 8 yr old cairn boy. Every rescue is a happy event for the Col. Potter family. Smuckers' rescue was particularly good as his life was literally saved yesterday. Col. Potter only learned that Smuckers was at risk early yesterday afternoon. After a quick call to the shelter, Smuckers fate was discovered and Col. Potter promptly turned those plans around. This morning, Smuckers trotted out with a smile on his face and his tail wagging to meet his rescuer."

 A big thank you to Kathy H. for rushing out this morning to welcome this very happy boy into the Col. Potter family!

Gecko sticks himself to Col. Potter

This handsome little, 11 pound, 3-5 year old cairn was dropped off at a shelter by his family because of an accidental bite. The story was that he and another intact male got into a squabble over a female dog in heat, all living in the same house. The owner’s teenage daughter tried to break it up and got nipped on the knee – nothing serious, just a little nip. But, the shelter had to accept him and put him in quarantine for 10 days. After his jail time was up he only had two options – find a rescue to take him or euthanization. Fortunately, Col Potter was able to say YES and once again saved the life of a little cairn who had been unfairly tried and convicted.

The shelter staff reports that he’s a great little dog, super friendly, has no issues with other dogs, he loves walks and behaved perfectly getting a bath. Our wonderful volunteer who picked him up  said “he is just precious – reminds me of the original Toto. He’s very calm and loves being held.”

Introducing Kanza!

"Kanza" -- a beautiful name for a handsome young guy. "Kanza" is a word of American Indian origin meaning "South Wind People" or it can be from the Arabic word for "Hidden Treasure."

Well, there's not too much hidden about this treasure! This gorgeous boy is surely the dog in the grey flannel suit, but he definitely doesn't act like a "suit." Kanza is a 2-year-old gray brindle, "On the Go" kind of guy. He's helping out foster mom patrolling the yard for varmints and tracking down those pesky tennis balls--especially those dang orange ones.

Kanza is so good at his job, they say, that he gave his previous owners a real run for their money and they couldn't keep up with his cairnie antics. Well, luckily, Col. Potter is made of sterner stuff and welcomed this active youngster into the clan.

Introducing Squire

Squire was taken from his owners due to neglect. Poor baby was severely under weight; the shelter personnel estimated his weight at 9 lbs when he came to them. With two decent meals a day, he gained almost 2 pounds while he was in their care. The shelter held him in case his owners wanted to reclaim him, but didn’t expect them to due to all the fines they faced.

They were right, the owners did not want him, and Squire was put up for adoption. The shelter even made him pet of the week in an attempt to save him as he had been at the shelter the longest of all the dogs. However, the shelter had too many nice small dogs and Squire did not get adopted. Col. Potter was called, and last week Squire became our newest intake.

Welcome Bocce the Benissimo!

Bocce ball is a popular game in Italy. Bocce ball is played in a sand pit--every cairn's dream. When we think of Bocce ball games we envision fun, laughter and friendly competition. This fits our newest CP boy like a glove! He's friendly, makes you laugh and is always ready to compete in a game involving every cairn's version of a bocce ball--the tennis ball.

Bocce is a 2 year old owner surrender. He's a well built sturdy reddish wheaten cairn who's good looking but doesn't know it. He knows sit, sit pretty, lay down, rollover and rings a bell when he needs to go potty. He also likes children, people, other dogs and lap time. He loves to get groomed too--no really, he does!! He's known nothing but love and good times.

So why is he in rescue, the inquiring mind would ask? Rescue is for all dogs not just the hard luck cases which we see all too often. Sometimes life changes and choices have to be made no one would have envisioned. Life can throw you a curve ball, well, in this case it's a BOCCE ball!

WELCOME A NEW BOY TO THE CP FAMILY!

How many times have we heard the story of a little Cairn doomed to death through no fault of their own? We've heard all the stories and have heard all the reasons, or should we say excuses. The fact still remains that without Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network little Cairns like our newest boy would have no other options, no place of safety and most importantly no future.

This particular little boy is very special in the fact that he so parallels the life of the person he was named for - mid age, and facing sudden death. His name is a donated name from our Name a Cairn Program. The difference is this little boy now has a future and the chance to live out his life to the fullest.

Please help me welcome JR. He was picked up as a stray and is estimated to be about 5 years old. He was deemed unadoptable because he has what was described as an umbilical hernia and his skin and hair show the effects of flea dermatitis and allergy. Yes, he would have been Put To Sleep for two simple and easily fixed medical issues. JR is named in memory of Danielle and George's son who died suddenly and unexpectedly and far too young.

Remember, it is only through your support that Col. Potter is able to rescue little Cairns like JR. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Tolstoy, our newest CP intake

Tolstoy was found by an elderly couple roaming around a cemetery on a lonely country road far outside of town. They vetted and loved Tolstoy, but already having several dogs themselves, they decided they just could not keep one more. CP was called, and Tolstoy was handed over to us this weekend. He is reportedly good with other dogs, housebroken, plays fetch and will release to you, walks nicely on a leash, bright and learns quickly.

Introducing Zeppo!

This 9 yr old cairn boy was surrendered to a shelter by his owners because the husband was very ill and they were unable to care for him. When he was in danger of being PTS, the shelter reached out and Col. Potter answered the call.

While Zeppo looks quite forlorn in his photo, he is reported to be a very handsome, happy and friendly boy. In fact, he was so excited when he was being rescued he barked with joy!

Zeppo is currently at the vet for his spa treatment and will join his foster home next week.

Welcome Rally!

Rally’s owners couldn’t care for him any longer. Her husband was gravely ill, it was all she could do to take care of her sick husband and three small children. To make matters worse, Rally was not feeling well. He needed a new home, one that could get him the medical attention he needed. A plea came into CP, but with bad days turning into worse ones, several surrender appointments were made and broken. Finally, a date was set and the appointment kept. Rally is now at the vet receiving his spa treatment and will be at his foster home soon. welcome Rally!

Brandon waddles into CP!

This very handsome, gray brindle cairn boy was in imminent danger of being Put To Sleep at a shelter but fortunately Col. Potter was able to rescue him.

Brandon is estimated to be 7-9 years old by the shelter staff. He’s described as very friendly, energetic, happy, but a bit obese. One of the shelter workers called him Mr. Waddles, due to the fact his excess weight causes him to waddle when he walks.

Sorry Brandon – but you can’t use the same excuse for the extra pounds that Salisbury and Carolina could!

He’s currently at the vet for his spa treatment. Once he gets to his foster home he can start on a much-needed diet and exercise program and lose that waddle!

Did you ever found yourself walking down a road, lost and hungry and you didn't know where to turn next?

That is what happened to one little wheaten cairn. Only one year old and on his own on the streets! Then one day a nice lady scooped him up and took him home and nourished him back to health. The Good Samaritan decided that she was unable to keep him, but she fortunately knew he would be in the best hands with Col. Potter.

Waif is now in the loving arms of his foster mom. Please give Waif a warm welcome to CP and his new life!

Taboo trots into CP!

Today a very cute, sweet, well behaved 8 year young cairn boy has joined Col. Potter. He is an owner surrender, not because he's been a bad boy, but his family's life was getting more busy with all the things families with children do. His family felt he wasn't getting the attention he was used to and deserved. They wanted him to have a better life and felt Col. Potter would be able to find this sweetheart just the right home! Who wouldn't want to just hug this adorable face?

This guy has manners--he even shakes paws with you! He likes children, other dogs and having fun. He enjoys grooming and prides himself on looking good! Not long ago one of our CP members lost her beloved dog to canine influenza. To honor Beth's lost love, our newest cairn boy will bear his name with pride and joy.

Welcome Wembly!

Wembly is a happy, well-loved little 2.5 year old cairn. Due to life changes and a move to another country, his mom contacted us to see if we could find him a new loving home. As expected, his mom was very sad to let him go, but so relieved to find a cairn rescue group to turn to. He became a Col Potter kid this week and will arrive in his foster home soon.
