From A Pauper To A Princess - The Journey of a Puppy Mill Dog (Entry 14)
Karen, one of CPCRN's foster mentors, has graciously allowed us access to her diary documenting the journey of Flopsy, also known as Rusty, from the puppy mill to her forever home. The diary will be broken up into short sections and posted. Check back for new entries in the series entitled "From A Pauper To A Princess - The Journey of a Puppy Mill Dog". (Previous Journal Entries: Entry One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen)

When everyone returned to the room, we began our other lessons. Rusty is just much too concerned with everything going on around her to attempt any of the lessons. We try, but she just doesn't understand. She did seem much more relaxed while she was in the room, so maybe in a few more weeks, her anxiety level
will lower even more. She did ace the "leave it or drop it" lesson! Rusty wouldn't even touch the chicken rawhide!! We were told to give it to them and give the command "drop it" and while doing so, have the exchange treat at their nose, so they can drop it and take the treat. I don't think we have to worry about her picking up things she isn't supposed to pick up!!
Also this week, I spent 3 evenings hand stripping all of her dead hair off of her. She was such a trooper!! I have attempted to do little bits of grooming here and there, but never a total body stripping. I figured she's been here long enough to be able to handle it now. It's hard to get used to her without all of that hair, she looks so tiny. She has such a wonderful Cairn coat, though.

It's been a while since I've written, but that doesn't mean Rusty
hasn't progressed. We just completed our fourth class at PetSmart. Rusty continues to make slow, but positive progress. The same employee has been giving her treats every week we have class. This time, Rusty did not hesitate to take the treat from her. We were so excited! Rusty walked around the store with foster dad really nicely.
One thing we noticed Rusty do when we were in the truck last night, is she stretched her seat belt far enough that she was able to put her front paws on the console between us! She stood there like she has done this all of her life, and just looked straight ahead out of the windshield, like a "normal" dog.
Earlier this week, we noticed a red, inflamed spot on the top of her
foot, between her toes. Rusty is the best dog ever at the vet's office. Dr. Perry wanted to open the spot and see if he could find something inside it. We came up empty. He said that in all likelihood, it had already worked its way out. They bandaged up her foot and it looked like a club! We removed the bandage this morning and it looks like it is healing well.

Tonight, I spoke with Sheryl, who is interested in adopting Rusty. Wow, what a lady!! She is a true blessing for my little girl. She is just what I have been praying for, in a forever home. I have given my blessings for this adoption to proceed. Sheryl is planning on flying from Boston to Arizona to pick her up.

We had our second class last night with Flopsy/Rusty and Starry Night. Our lessons were to go down, drop it, and loose leash walking. Rusty did quite well walking around the store. She only had problems when we encountered other people, then she would try to flee or hide behind me. When I felt she had enough, we went back to the training room and I practiced her looking at me. She was looking at me much longer this time, and of course we have been practicing all week. Another employee saw us and came into the room. I explained Rusty's situation and asked her to give Rusty a treat. Rusty took it from her and even moved her nose back to her hand and licked her fingers. We did this twice.

Of course, now the tears have come. It is such a bittersweet time for me. On one hand, I am thrilled that Rusty's journey is almost complete, but on the other, I am sad she will be leaving. I had hoped she would be living closer to us, but it is a small sacrifice to make for her happiness. In spite of her shyness, she has been such a wonderful girl to foster. I love her so much, but I know that it is my time to step aside and let her go.

Tony and I both went outside and laid on the blanket with Rusty. It took her a while before she laid down and relaxed, but she did. She even stayed on the blanket with Tony when I got up.

Tonight, Rusty began her puppy training classes at PetsMart. She is in the puppy training classes, so she won’t be intimidated by loud, big dogs. Starry is also going to attend the classes with us.

Rusty’s class went much better than we had anticipated. She actually laid down on the floor, next to my seat and relaxed. There were only 5 of us in the class, including Rusty and Starry Night, so I think that helped. Our assignment tonight was to say their name and as soon as they made the slightest eye contact, you give them a high value treat. I wasn’t sure how this was going to work, since Rusty is not treat motivated and will not look at us, but she did it!!! Even though it was just for a millisecond, she looked at me in the eyes! Our other assignment was to get them to sit. Rusty didn’t do it, but she did look at me when I said her name, so that was something. I was also very proud of her, because she finally took a treat from the trainer. I thought I was going to cry, right then and there. This was a HUGE accomplishment!! I am so happy that we signed her up and hopefully, she will be a more confident dog in 8 weeks.

I took Rusty to the vet’s office this morning for a follow-up on her yeast infection in her ears. The yeast is now gone.
Now, for the great news! The cauliflower in her left ear is almost non-existent now! Yeah! My vet is so excited about finding out about the Synotic, thanks to Lori R. She said there is still some cauliflower in her right ear, but not nearly as bad as it was. The vet let me look through the scope and showed me where it is. It’s in 3 different spots down the canal, with the last spot right before her eardrum, but you can see the eardrum! Her ears look super clean now, too! I am so excited about this! We will continue to use Synotic twice a week and Waxosol once a week. This is less than the original regimen, so we are getting there.

Today is Rusty’s 5th birthday! I put a party hat and bandana on her for some pictures for the website. She wasn’t too thrilled, but of course she tolerated it.

After returning home from our nightly walk, we cleaned out the pool for the kids. McDuffy had gotten in, and then began to race around the yard. Holly gave chase with McDuffy, then Rusty joined in! She actually chased McDuffy with Holly! You could tell she didn’t quite know what she was doing, but she was doing it!! It was so awesome to see Rusty do this, even if it was only for about 5 seconds. I’m so happy for her. She actually looked as though there was a smile on her face.
5/21/07
Rusty had another major breakthrough this evening. She played with Holly! Rusty was actually jumping on top of her then she play bowed and zoomed. The play session lasted about 5 minutes. I think it was a big stress reliever for Rusty. We still haven’t progressed too much with us, but I think the canine play is a step in the right direction.

5/22/07
Another play session for Rusty tonight! She was zooming and rough-n-tumbling with both Holly and McDuffy. We also took the pups on a walk tonight and she did fabulous, as usual. Rusty really enjoys our walks.
At feeding time, when I take Rusty and Holly outside to eat, Rusty is doing the “happy dance” just like Holly. It’s so cute to see her mimic Holly.

5/8/07
Rusty still tries to elude us when we want to catch her, but she does relent, after a few laps around the kitchen or in the yard. This is improvement from the times we would have to “corner” her to catch her.
Rusty isn’t fond of the doorways and will not come inside the house, unless we hide behind the cabinets. Same goes with going outside. We need to be completely out of sight, and then Rusty will scurry outside.
Tonight, on our walk, Rusty acted like she wanted to run, so we all ran for a ways down the street. She actually looked like she enjoyed it. However, the minute we looked in her direction, she appeared as though she is searching for a safe place to hide.
After the walk, we stood out front at the neighbor’s house, talking and so they could give the fur kids some treats. Rusty didn’t want anything to do with the treats and looked very concerned the entire time. She paced at the end of her leashes, until we went home. I know Rusty has made some miniscule improvements, but I just want so much more for her.
5/16/07
We took the fur kids to Pet Smart this evening to pick up a few things. It was nice and quiet, which was perfect for Rusty. She really did well while we walked around the store. Of course, she was nervous to start, but after about 30 minutes, she began to sniff around and check things out a little bit. Rusty’s favorite part was the ride in the truck. She really enjoys her rides.
