Newbie Enters the Learning Curve at Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Newbie, a handsome 7 year old Red Wheaten Male

“Newbie” - Originated in the British Isles in the 1800s as slang for the “new boy”.  It has now become commonly used for anyone “new” to something, such as technology, the workplace, or even a Foster Home that can't remember the new furkid's name!  Many long term Foster Moms and Dads can relate to that, I'm sure!

This past weekend, Newbie, a 7 year old Wheaten boy, joined Col. Potter.  He has been a very well loved boy, and he came to rescue only because it was time for his owner make a change in living arrangements that often happens as time marches on.  Sadly, due to “rules”, Newbie couldn't make the move, but Col. Potter welcomed him with open arms.  He arrived to his Foster Home, ready to start the next chapter of his life.

Newbie is a typical Cairn that loves belly rubs, digging holes, chasing critters, and cuddles.  He likes people and uses his good looks to charm everyone he meets.

Please welcome the newest boy in town - Newbie!

Wiggles Delivers 5 years of Forever Moments!

Written by Wiggles fka CP Erin Renee

Wiggles fka CP Erin Renee doing QA for the grandkids

Hello there!  Little Miss Wiggles here!  I have been with my Forever Family now for Five years!  Five!  Ever since I was a little 10 month old baby!  My Mom is always talking about me like I’m some kind of wild hooligan (like Tigger and Harv are just “perfect”!), so I thought you might like to get the scoop from my perspective…

This is my yard, and I’d love for you to come and play!

I am, after all, a Cairn – all 11.5 lbs. of me!  I love to play with everyone and everything!  I love to outsmart Mom and Dad whenever I get the opportunity (See: Not sneaky; just Smart!... Hehehehehe…).  I love to let people know what I am thinking – and I will talk ‘till the cows come home – whatever that means!  I can also be every bit as deaf as the next Cairn when it comes to taking instruction from Mom and Dad.  I am, after all, a Cairn!

See?  I am very good when playing with the grandkids!

Now, of course, I shower Mom and Dad with kisses, and, just for them, I wiggle my whole back end continually while my tail wags a mile a minute.  I mean, they named me “Wiggles” so I guess this means a lot to them!

I love everyone I meet, and I adore all of the grandkids!  Mom and Dad often Foster other Cairns in need, so I play a big role helping them, working hard to teach them how to play tug with the toys, and definitely how to play zoomies around the yard and house.  Important skills for every Cairn!

I also do QA for the Fosters…
…Got to make sure these rope toys are up to snuff!
So, Mom can say what she wants, the truth is that I am genuinely affectionate, truly loving, and the Cutest Darn Cairn ever!  I am also very happy to have had the opportunity, for each day of these past five years, to wiggle into my Mom and Dad’s laps whenever they sit down – and I plan to keep on doing it!

Shona is Scooped into the Safety Net at Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Shona, an adorable 6 - 8 year old Wheaten Female

This adorable, little (11 lbs.), 6-8 year old girl was found as a stray.  She had no tags or microchip, and she wasn’t reported as missing at any local shelters or vet offices.   The finder contacted Col. Potter to see if we could help and yes we could, since we had an available Foster Home for her!

Shona is now in her Foster Home after spending a couple of days with the vet.   So far, all reports are that she’s a very happy and friendly little Cairn.

Welcome Shona!   (pronounced show-na)

Honeybunch Sweetens up Col. Potter’s Cupboard!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Honeybunch, a 6.5 year old Wheaten Female

This lovely 6 1/2 year old Cairn had the life every girl dreams of until one day the family dynamics changed, and then changed again.  As more humans of all ages converged on her home, it started to get crowded.  Soon it became apparent that Honeybunch wasn't thriving with all the changes.  Her owner decided this cute little Cairn deserved the best home possible and sought some help.  Soon the Col. Potter door opened wide for this little sweetheart!

Honeybunch loves belly rubs and good food.   Cuddles are much appreciated too!  She'll even dance for her dinner - How cute is that?  Although she's currently enjoying a wonderful B&B while her spa treatment gets completed, she'll be heading to her Foster Home in the near future.  Her hostess has had nothing but great things to say about her, and the word SWEET is heard a lot!

Please give a warm, soft Welcome to our Sweet little Honeybunch!

Rosalie to the Rescue at Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Rosalie, a friendly 5 year old Black Brindle Female

Please let’s welcome Rosalie to Col. Potter!  She was an owner surrender who's elderly Mom had to go to an assisted living due to a very bad health problem.  The husband has been spending a lot of time with his wife and knew he was not giving Rosalie the proper care she deserved, so he contacted CP for help.  Thankfully, we were able to come to their aid.

Rosalie's name was donated through our Name a Rescue Cairn Program by Amy R. in honor of her aunt and dear friend, Rosalie Lauretta, who passed away Aug 26th, 2013.  Roz was a regular supporter of Col. Potter and our rescue efforts, and she always adopted a rescue or shelter dog.

Also, a big “Thanks!” to Deirdre and Kenneth for making the long journey to help this girl get to her new Foster Home.

Please give a warm Welcome to Rosalie!

Berman Learns Some Beta at Col. Potter!

Contributed by CP's VP of Intakes

Berman, a rambunctious 3 year old Wheaten Male

His previous life is a mystery... where he came from, how he got there, what his life was like... but he found himself in a shelter that really tried to find him a new home.  Being a true Cairn, however, when a prospective adoptive home would spend time with him at the shelter, he would "play nice" initially, but then, when he discovered they weren't really in charge or alpha, he would assert himself, and the prospective home would leave without taking him along.  He spent a very long time at this shelter - which prides itself on being very low kill - but eventually, even his time was running short, so they asked if Col. Potter would take this boy, knowing that we understand the Cairn personality and temperament, and we would provide the Alpha in his life.

Please help us welcome Berman, a 3 year old Cairn boy, who is already learning some manners at his Foster Home.

Ulfie Travels the Road to Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Ulfie, an approximately 8 year old Wheaten Male

Please welcome “Ulfie” to the Col. Potter clan!  Ulfie is a fine Wheaten boy, about 8 years old, and weighing in at a healthy 20 lbs.  We don’t know too much about Ulfie.  He showed up on our list as an “at-risk” Cairn boy.  He was described as a breeding dog who was dumped at the local shelter when he was no longer useful to his owner.  When Col. Potter heard of him, Ulfie was due for his “review” at the shelter and he was “listed”— and that meant that his prospects were quite dire.

But -- With the invaluable and unhesitating assistance of a generous CP volunteer, who pulled Ulfie almost literally from the jaws of death, we now have this boy safe in his Foster Home, and within the care of our Col. Potter family. Thank you, Pat K!

Saving this boy is part of the great wheel of rescue that CP holds out as promise to the Cairns in need.  Each cog of the wheel engages and turns toward Home for each of our Cairns.  That’s because of all our Volunteers.  Thank you for transporting, fostering, matchmaking, blankets, post-adoption advising — there are far too many good people and teams to mention all of you here!  But for all of you, your goodness is in each heartbeat of this boy “Ulfie.”  Living proof…

And if anyone else out there wants to step up and volunteer for transport, fostering, whatever you can do, now would be a great time to do it.  Engage!  There are more Cairns out there who need you.

Now, without further ado, heeeeeeere’s Ulfie!
