WARNING - Acorns can make your dog very sick - Reminder - check your yard!

Contributed by a CP Volunteer

This is a repost of some important information to keep your dog safe that we originally ran in 2010. However, the acorns are out and we have noticed people posting on facebook about this so we are sharing this article once again. The informative link at the bottom is still working.

We have an abnormal amount of fresh green acorns on the ground in the back yard (our dog yard) this year. Miss Gabby fancies them. Gabby has her mouth emptied about 5 times a day. These little nuts can make a dog very sick, so please be on the alert for them, and get them OUT OF THE YARD whenever and as soon as you are able.

I found the post from the Cairn Rescue Mentoring yahoo group where the “acorn incident” first surfaced. It was a wee foster boy. Very scary.

He required hospitalization. Here is the post from November 4, 2006:

We've had a scare here tonight. I noticed that Johnboy, who was going to meet his forever mom, Andrea, tomorrow (today now), was not playing with his brothers and had in fact holed up in the crate in the X-pen. I got him out & held him. He simply cuddled up, no kisses, no squirms, no nips - not normal. Quick call to Mo, then Danielle. Took his temp - about 103 so somewhat high. Tempted him with yummy food - not interested.

Another call to Danielle & to Andrea to tell her not to drive up from OK in the AM while we checked him out. Off to the emergency clinic. A fecal check showed diarrhea in the gut although I had observed no abnormal stools, nor had he vomited. A Parvo check was done - negative, thank God. Stick chewing has been the preferred activity this week so I was worried about that.

Then I thought to ask about acorns as there are two huge pin oaks that drop theirs into the dog yard & I had seen the pups chewing on some. The vet looked them up and found that Tannic acid poisoning can cause severe gastric distress, so little Johnboy is spending the night there on IV to flush his system and rehydrate him since he was beginning to dehydrate. There can be renal & hepatic damage so we will have blood work done tomorrow to check that out.

He recovered and met his forever family the next weekend, and all is well. But still, be wary!

Please follow this link if you would like to learn more about this.

Boots and Barkley Beef Bully Sticks Dog Treats Recall
by MIKE SAGMAN Dog Food Advisor
 September 21, 2012 –

Kasel Associated Industries of Denver, CO is voluntarily recalling its Boots and Barkley American Beef Bully Sticks product because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. The event was reported by the FDA in a news release dated September 21, 2012. According to the FDA bulletin: These are sold at Target Stores.

Salmonella can sicken animals that eat these products and humans are at risk for salmonella poisoning from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the pet products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these symptoms after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.

If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has any of these signs, please contact your veterinarian. According to the bulletin, the affected American Beef Bully Sticks were distributed nationwide through Target retail stores from April through September 2012.

Link joins Col. Potter

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please welcome a new boy, Link, into our Col. Potter clan. Link is a blond  fluffy, wheaten sort of dude. Looking really good in his prime at 5-years-old, he's a very clever fellow with a million-dollar smile. Bright and friendly, he's always aware of who and what is going on around him.

Link made the decision to move on over to Col. Potter when he found himself--through no fault of his own--involved in a small family feud at his former home. Well, no more of that stuff, Link. Here at CP, consider yourself part of the family!

Welcome back a familiar face

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

When a cairn comes into Col. Potter many wheels spin to make things happen specifically for each cairn. The first step is the rescue and intake whether it be a puppy mill, shelter, or owner surrender. Next is the vetting and transport to the foster home. After that the training, love, safety and evolution of the cairn comes into play. Finally the little one is ready for his or her forever home which we celebrate with great happiness. Everyone has done their job and fulfilled the mission of finding each special Col. Potter kid a forever home and a happily ever after.

Sadly, sometimes happily ever ends due to unforeseen events. This sweet little lady was another victim of the current economy. Her former mom struggled with this decision, holding on as long as she could before letting go. Due to confidentiality I cannot share the owner's exact words but I can paraphrase them for you below:

I should be with her until her last day, giving her love and affection, comforting her as the end grows near. Instead, I have to leave her with strangers never to see her again. Will she always be looking for me? Will she find a new home to love her? Will she accept the changes? Will she remember me? She's another victim of the economy. She doesn't know what's coming, and will have no idea what's happening when our paths split and we go our separate ways.

Rakel is a former puppy mill girl. She has overcome so much of the puppy mill baggage in the last few years. She loves attention, belly rubs and warming laps! She doesn't mind other dogs or even a cat or two. Her vision and hearing aren't so keen anymore but her sweetness factor has grown since she first left Col. Potter's doorstep. Rakel has been at her foster home less than 24 hours and already foster mom has used the words "adorable and very sweet" to describe this spunky 10 year old girl. Her bags are unpacked and she's enjoying foster care.

Luckily all CP cairns have the safety net of Col. Potter in case of unforeseen changes when happily ever after hits a bump in the road. Let's all welcome and give a collective big hug to welcome back Rakel!

Please welcome McQuinn to CP!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

Every little boy loves to explore and go on an adventure, checking out new trails and paths, finding little hidden creeks and streams to skip stones or even stop to fish for a little while. It's summertime and the wanderlust gets the best of all of us, but none moreso than a young, inquisitive little boy Cairn.

Such is the case of our newest handsome little boy to join the Col. Potter family. He got the wanderlust bug and found his adventure ended when he was picked up as a stray on a busy road. While he had a collar on, there was no identification or microchip to be found. The only thing he's been exploring the past 10 days is the inside of a kennel waiting for his stray hold to expire so he could finally start his next adventure with Col. Potter!

McQuinn is a donated name from Sabrina L. He's estimated to be about 4 years old, sweet and friendly. Lucky for McQuinn his exploration days are over and he's now in the loving arms of Col. Potter. Heartworm positive, he will definitely need the love and support of his Col. Potter family and friends to help him get through the treatment and recovery.

McQuinn will be listed in the Guardian Angel program, so please consider donating to his care and treatment.

There won't be anymore adventures or exploring for McQuinn for a little while, but once he's healthy again, this handsome little boy will be ready to find his very own home where they can experience new adventures and exploration together safely!

Geordi La Forge and Vana recently graced CP

Written by a CP intakes volunteer

Because of some unhappy events in their home life, these two little cairn siblings found themselves in need of a new home. And their daddy took special care to see that they were placed with the best possible people...meaning Col. Potter, of course.

Geordi La Forge is described as a sweet, somewhat shy, 11-year-old brindle gentleman.

Vana is a beautiful spirited 12-year-old wheaten lady.

These two distinguished "kids" are such a classy addition to our family--lets give them both a big CP Welcome!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please welcome the newest Col. Potter girl – Elyse, who came into our care recently. This little girl is an owner surrender who has suffered with severe itchies for a very long time. She’s a mature girl at 10 years old and receiving special care her foster home.

We just know she is feeling better already!
