Corkie Makes Her Way to Col. Potter!

Contributed by CP's VP of Intakes

Corkie, a Beautiful Light Wheaten girl

Corkie, 10 years old and Full of Life!

How many of you have now, or had in the past, aging parents that needed some assistance in their golden years?  You wouldn't think of turning your back on your parents, family members, or even friends at this time.  Just because they have slowed down a little, or might not be able to do as much or as quickly as they once did, they are valued members of society and are treated with the dignity and respect that they have earned and deserve.  Too bad that's not always the case for our furkids.  Many times when they become older, become a burden, or are no longer of any value, they are cast aside, disposed of, or dumped to await their inevitable fate.

Such is the sad story of our newest CP family member.  This beautiful little girl grew older and lost her value, so was either going to be PTS or dumped at a shelter, where the same fate more than likely awaited her, given her age.  Well, we couldn't let that happen! Denise G. from the Rescue Team rode - or should I say drove - to her rescue, swooping her up and transporting her to safety and week long spa treatment before heading to her Foster Home.

#2973 Corkie is a friendly and sweet, 10 year old Wheaten girl who has many good years left in her for the right family that wants a lady who is laid back and gentle.

Her name comes from our Name a Rescue Cairn Program.  It was given by Susan W. in loving memory of her first precious Cairn, Corkie, who came from Ireland and was so very well loved for her entire life, and beyond.

Please help us give a warm welcome to CP’s Corkie, who now has the chance to be spoiled and loved too!

Welcome to CP Picard!

Contributed by a CP Intakes Volunteer

Picard is a little 10 year old cairn boy who found himself needing a new place to call home. He’s described is very calm for the most part, but he also loves to play and has the energy of a puppy. He loves people, toys, other dogs, and even cats. Just a well-rounded happy little guy!

 Welcome to the family Picard!

Welcome back a familiar face

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

When a cairn comes into Col. Potter many wheels spin to make things happen specifically for each cairn. The first step is the rescue and intake whether it be a puppy mill, shelter, or owner surrender. Next is the vetting and transport to the foster home. After that the training, love, safety and evolution of the cairn comes into play. Finally the little one is ready for his or her forever home which we celebrate with great happiness. Everyone has done their job and fulfilled the mission of finding each special Col. Potter kid a forever home and a happily ever after.

Sadly, sometimes happily ever ends due to unforeseen events. This sweet little lady was another victim of the current economy. Her former mom struggled with this decision, holding on as long as she could before letting go. Due to confidentiality I cannot share the owner's exact words but I can paraphrase them for you below:

I should be with her until her last day, giving her love and affection, comforting her as the end grows near. Instead, I have to leave her with strangers never to see her again. Will she always be looking for me? Will she find a new home to love her? Will she accept the changes? Will she remember me? She's another victim of the economy. She doesn't know what's coming, and will have no idea what's happening when our paths split and we go our separate ways.

Rakel is a former puppy mill girl. She has overcome so much of the puppy mill baggage in the last few years. She loves attention, belly rubs and warming laps! She doesn't mind other dogs or even a cat or two. Her vision and hearing aren't so keen anymore but her sweetness factor has grown since she first left Col. Potter's doorstep. Rakel has been at her foster home less than 24 hours and already foster mom has used the words "adorable and very sweet" to describe this spunky 10 year old girl. Her bags are unpacked and she's enjoying foster care.

Luckily all CP cairns have the safety net of Col. Potter in case of unforeseen changes when happily ever after hits a bump in the road. Let's all welcome and give a collective big hug to welcome back Rakel!

Say hola to Selena!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please welcome Selena. This sweet girl lived a quiet life with her owners for ten years. Then due to an unfortunate change in her family's circumstances, Selena found herself without a home and on the way to a shelter. Lucky for Selena, a wonderful neighbor stepped in and gave her a new home. Poor Selena arrived in her new home matted, with fleas, and a sore mouth. Selena's new owner kindly provided all her needed veterinary care and had her nicely groomed.

Unfortunately, Selena had difficulty adjusting from a very quiet home to a busy, active home with children. Selena's new owner loved this sweet cairn so much that she sought CP's help to find the right forever home.

Selena enjoyed a bed and biscuit with a wonderful CP volunteer until she joined her foster family.

Introducing Thornton!

Contributed by a CP Intakes Volunteer

We have a new gentleman that has joined Col. Potter. His name is Thornton. He's a 10 year old handsome, well actually very cute, wheaten guy with a happy disposition. He is an owner surrender due to no fault of his own. In the ideal world when a family gets a puppy, they go through all the stages of puppy, crazy cairn teen, confident adults and easy going mellow guy to wonderful seniors. The family all grows together and enjoys all that life has to offer. Sadly sometimes the human parents grow apart, sometimes the split becomes permanent. The family unit is broken apart. As hard as people may try to make the transition, now and then there are casualties. Little Thornton was the casualty. With the changes in his human family there was a need for Thornton to find his own new home.

You see Thornton can't read so he couldn't scan the want ads for apartments. He asked around about apartments but then had another dilemma - how would he pay the rent? Thonton doesn't have a paying job. He also doesn't have a diploma so even if he did find a job, it wouldn't pay enough to maintain the lifestyle he was used to living! So what's a boy to do? Hmmm - of course! Call Col. Potter!! The call was made and Thornton quickly became a CP gentleman with the help of a compassionate volunteer. Thornton has been through his spa process and has recently been welcomed into the warmth of his foster home. He says THANK YOU - after all, he is a gentleman. Please welcome Thornton!

WELCOME TWO NEW CP FAMILY MEMBERS!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

Two little Cairns have not enjoyed freedom up until they became part of the Col. Potter family. They are older, which is always more heartbreaking, but also endearing that they will finally get to enjoy being a spoiled and pampered Cairn and learn about freedom.

Fate

Fate - Female, wheaten, born 10/16/04 - donated name by Geri P. to thank Kathy and Barney H. for all they do for the furkids

R. J. Fisherman

R. J. Fisherman - Male, dark brindle, born 5/30/02 - donated name by Mary N. in honor and memory of Richard J.

Please give a warm welcome to both Fate and R. J. Fisherman into the CP Family!

A new life for Rocky B!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please give a warm Col. Potter welcome to a boy who deserved better in this life.

Rockie B was just rescued from a lifetime of being a breeder boy. He is TEN YEARS OLD, and from all accounts sweet and mellow. He is somewhat nervous with the changes he has experienced over the past few days, but is warming up quickly. The vet tech who is his primary care taker said he is a very sweet, calm cairn. He gives her kisses and follows her around.

Kisses. Follows her around.
After TEN years in a kennel shed.
The epitome of resilience.

Rockie B's name was donated by Lynne B., named for the beloved cat of one of Col. Potter's foster homes.

He is a beautiful wheaten, weighing 17 pounds. He has just been neutered and has his dental. He will be ready to move to his foster home this weekend.

Welcome Rockie B, may every day from here be one that a cairn truly deserves!!

Introducing Hogan

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Hogan lived with the same family since he was a puppy. They were moving and the pet deposit was too high; they dumped him off at a high kill dog pound. He is 10 years old.

Hogan is a sweetheart, he is housetrained and understands 'sit', 'come', 'stay', and 'no'. He loves to fetch, and he gets along well with other animals. The shelter knew that hearing "10 years old" scares away adopters, but they also knew being cairn he had many good years left. Col. Potter jumped in to make sure Hogan had them to live.

Welcome, Hogan!

Please Welcome Laney

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Just imagine the confusion this little cairn experienced when she, along with her 2 housemates, got dropped off at a shelter after living in their home for over 9 years. The shelter contacted us asking for help, because 10 year old dogs seldom get adopted. Thanks to several dedicated Col. Potter volunteers, she was rescued from the shelter and delivered to our vet very quickly. To make things worse, she picked up kennel cough at the shelter. She spent several extra days at the vet in isolation while being treated and has been cough and sneeze free for several days now.

Laney is 10 years old and a little overweight. The vet staff describes her as sweet, friendly and quiet. They also said one of the office cats spends hours sitting by her cage, keeping her company. And she’s just fine with having the company!

She’ll be heading to her foster home on Thursday. And another big “thanks” to several volunteers for making this happen.

Welcome to the family little lady!

Welcome to CP Bryant!

Contributed by a CP Intakes Volunteer

Bryant spent the first 10 years of his life with a back yard breeder. When he was no longer able to complete his job, he was given to an elderly woman. This new owner kept him outside, in a back yard pen. Poor Bryant, he went from one back yard to another. Within months, Bryant's new owner fell on ill health, and CP was asked to take him into the rescue. Reportedly, Bryant is a friendly little man, and good with children and other dogs.

Let’s give Bryant a warm CP welcome.

Introducing Spock

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Spock was rescued by CP from a shelter back in July 2010. Spock, 10 years old, has skin allergies and chronic dry eye. He made the adjustment to his foster home, and just a few days ago, a forever home was found. Even though the forever home kept him separated from the other two resident dogs, they still knew another dog was in the house. The alpha resident dog started attacking the other resident dog. Poor Spock, he did nothing but stare behind a locked gate. After a few days, it was decided the best thing for Spock was to be returned to CP. Spock is happily back home at his foster home. Let’s all give a warm CP welcome back to this stately man, he’s had a rough few days.

IN THE FOSTER SPOTLIGHT!!

UPDATE: We are very pleased to announce that Bubbles has found her forever family! Are you looking for a TERRIFIC TERRIER? Check out our available cairns! Look for Bubbles and other "Happily Ever After" stories on our Post Adoption blog.

Bubbles is a brave, young at heart 10 year old cairn who has survived 9 years in a puppy mill. Puppy mills often do not provide proper nourishment, veterinary care, exercise or socialization to the animals that they breed. One of the definitions of “Bubble” is “ to rise to or as if to the surface; emerge.”

She was rescued by Col. Potter nearly a year ago in September and quickly became the favorite of the resident boy cairns at her foster home. She has a sweet disposition and has learned to enjoy life, the routine of regular meals and playing with the boys. This may not sound like a big accomplishment but for a dog who spent nearly a decade as a prisoner in a puppy mill,it is a triumph and she has emerged from a life of servitude to a life with potential She is still more fond of the dogs than the people but will relax a little once she is in foster Mom’s lap. It is such a testament to her willingness to grow in her new life that her foster mom tells us that you can almost see her bolstering up her courage to be around people and not run as she makes this effort.

She had a medical setback several months after coming to Col. Potter. She had surgery for the removal of mammary tumors last year. Her post surgical checkup revealed “clean edges” and she is cancer free. Like human breast lump survivors, she will require annual checkups to be sure that she remains healthy. Many people have been touched by her story and have participated as her guardian angels to help defray her medical expenses and place her on the road to a brighter future!

She goes outside for her potty breaks but likes to come back inside right away. She is not a chewer. She does like to sit with her toys and “dig” at her blankets to make them just right. At a voluptuous 24 pounds, she has been described as the “Mae West of Doggiedom” or in other words, girls want to be her and boys want to be with her. She takes this in as her due “waddling with magnificent composure between her adoring fans”. She enjoys playing with the other dogs and will initiate play as well. She adores other dogs and enjoys teaching the younger dogs to behave. She is much more active when she is around younger dogs.

She has had the opportunity to become secure enough in her foster home to develop some very cute habits. She “woo woos” when she is waiting to be fed and in case you were thinking about giving the other dogs her food, she sings to get you to feed her first. If this doesn’t work, she will bark at you.She is not food aggressive and doesn’t bark about anything else. If you pick up the cookie jar you will also be serenaded by the “woo woo” chorus and if you have the audacity to laugh at this, she will chide you until you produce her food or treat.

She is a very quiet, reserved big girl who is slowly becoming less fearful of people. Her puppy mill days have made her wary of them but she is loosening up. She is very pretty and sweet and everyone at the vet loves her!

Please don’t let her age discourage you from making her part of your family. She is an experienced mama and she does a wonderful job of keeping furkids in line. She would love to grow old with you and serenade you. Can’t you make room for one more? After all as Col. Potter likes to say, “saving just one dog won’t change the world but it will surely change the world for that one dog”. Bubbles exemplifies that one dog.
