Friday Flashback: Conor Takes the Cake!

Well, Hello There!  Conor here, though you probably remember me as CP Hubble – yes the one who hopped over the fence in the deep snow (That was fun! He-he-he-he!) and made my Foster Mom think I got “lost” for a bit.   I knew where I was, so I wasn’t really lost - I just wanted to see what it would be like, living in a different home, that’s all.  Well, I can tell you now: there’s no more fence hopping in my future!  I’ve found the most Perfect Forever Home and the most Wonderful Forever Dad so I’m putting down roots right here!

Conor has had a smile on his face…
…since he first looked into Dad’s eyes!
My Dad and I live near a college campus and we love to go there for walks and to meet all kinds of people - and get fussed over by all the college kids!  I also made friends with the security officers at the college.  They usually come out of their office when they see us walking on their monitors, but if they don’t show up, I go to their office door to see where they are.

Conor and Dad give Day Care a try…
…and it turns out to be Fun!

Dad took me to try out a place called “DayCare” so I could meet and play with some new dog friends.  It was lots of fun!!! We had a game of “Bobbing for Hotdogs”, and we had a birthday party for one of the dogs, and I made good friends with a Beagle!  I made friends pretty easily with other dogs, but they kept reminding me to “curb my excitement” - whatever that means!  Dad liked looking at the pictures they took while I was there, and he said we can go back again every week!  I hope my Beagle friend comes back too!

Dad was very impressed when I showed him my super prey drive and Spiderman skills.  I literally climbed up the bark of an oak tree in pursuit of a squirrel!  Dad had me on the leash so I didn’t get very far, but far enough to show Dad my true Cairnacity!  He had never had a Cairn climb a tree before, so I was glad to give him a good demonstration!

Those Canadian Geese are another story, however. I kept watching them carefully while they were grazing on the athletic fields, and I decided they were making too much of a mess.  The next time there was a large group of geese, I took action!  I used my deep bark and stood on my hind legs and barked at them.  That did the trick!  The geese took off and I felt so full of power!  Of course, when they flew above us, they let loose a fleet-load of goose-poop and I was completely astonished!  I never saw anything like it, falling out of the sky!  Thankfully, none of it hit me, but my Dad wasn’t quite so lucky…  Well, now I start looking for those nasty geese when we walk throughout the campus, and if they are flying above, I stand on my hind legs and give them a piece of my mind!  Dad wears a hat now, just in case…

Conor “flocks” Dad for a Birthday Surprise (note the hat!!)
On Dad’s birthday, I had him "flocked" at 6:30 A.M. when we went out for our walk – Surprise!!  I was pretty sure being greeted by 20 plastic flamingos was better than those old geese!  I even went crazy barking at them, and they did not make a mess.  It was a good surprise – better than cake!

My Dad says that I have a “wonderful personality” and that my behavior is great.  I think he likes that I’m so affectionate and love to sit on his lap while he’s reading or working on the computer.  I’m also very willing to go in my crate and have a little quiet time when Dad is busy.

Of course, Dad isn’t always on the ball…  One morning he had placed his bagel on the kitchen counter when the phone rang and he had to go in a different room to find the portable phone.  When he got back, the bagel was mysteriously gone.  He looked to see if he had put it into the toaster, but it was no where to be found.  Well, later that night, while Dad and I were sitting in the TV room, he noticed that I would disappear for a while and then come back with crumbs around my mouth…  Well, a thorough search revealed pieces of bagel tucked between couch pillows, under Dad’s bed pillow, in the back of my crate, and a few other strategic locations…  For some reason, Dad doesn’t leave food on the kitchen counter anymore when I’m around!

Dad hosted a big gathering over Easter with family and friends, and he worried about me being a bit overwhelmed, but it all worked out!  I went from person to person and jumped to give them kisses, and once I jumped into one person’s lap and sat with him for awhile.  I showed Dad that I was really a good boy!  There was that one time when I really wanted to take the stuffed bunny from that three year old, but I traded it pretty quickly for some new toys of my own.  Even when the three year old kept trying to pick me up (and then drop me!), I was very good and just figured out how to avoid her.  After everyone left, we were happy to get back into our routine!  We took our walk then I just jumped up on Dad’s lap and we both fell asleep in the recliner - A perfect way to end the day!

Thank you to all of the great Volunteers at Col. Potter who gave me a chance to be Happy Forever with the Greatest Dad in the World!

Charlie fka CP Sir. Charlie - still Happy in Forever!

Hey, Col. Potter people!   It’s finally Spring!

You might remember me from a few months back (eight, if you want to be precise…) as that charming older gentleman, Sir. Charlie, adopted by another charming older gentleman, my Dad!  He dropped the “Sir.” As it was just too formal for us country folk, so now I am simply Charlie – but I am still Charming!
Do you like this profile better?
A nice lady named “Janet” came over and took some photos of me – and fell in love with me, of course!  (I am charming, after all…)

I like to take my Dad for a walk…

…and Dad likes to check out the other animals!

Anyway, my Dad calls me “Chuckles” because I make him laugh every day, and that’s a good thing too.  He, in turn, takes me for nice walks every day, and I let him stop and check out the pesky alpaca (who is just a stick in the mud as far as I’m concerned), and he likes to stop and make sure the cattle are keeping the grass short enough (especially with the ticks!).
I love the Spring!

Dad calls me “Chuckles” because I make him laugh!
I then always treat him to my "stop, drop, and roll" routine which makes him laugh.  I like to keep him happy!  Happy Dad!  Happy Charlie!  Simple as that!

Well, that’s it for now, but I’ll let you know how things are going down the road.  Now…  Where did we leave that pesky alpaca?

Friday Flashback: Kody Celebrates His 1st Gotcha Year!

Written by Kody fka CP IC

Kody fka CP IC, enjoying his 1st Gotcha Year!!
Hi there, it's me again, Kody!  Remember me?  When I was rescued by Col. Potter my name was “IC” and I was just a cute little puppy!  Mom and Dad officially adopted me the first week of December last year, but Mom told me my first truly significant “Gotcha Day” was November 8th.  She and Dad say that’s my special day since they went and picked me up that day!  At first I was a CP Foster, but Mom and Dad knew right away that I was already home!

I know at times I can be a handful for Mom and Dad, but they’re OK with that!  Mom says I am a chewer… Guilty!  There is lots of evidence from my younger days to remind her, but well… I am still a puppy!  I am a highly skilled toy destroyer too, so Mom finally gave up on trying to find something I can't destroy.  Hehehehehe!

Dad and I love to play with the Teaser Pole!

Mom and Dad are pretty good at adapting, I have to say, so that’s what we all did. Now I get to play with something called a “teaser pole” that I think Dad invented.  Attached to this pole is a neat squeaker toy – without stuffing - and since my toy is tethered by a line, I can't take off and hide somewhere while I destroy it.   At first I thought “What?” but Dad knows how to make it so much fun for me to chase after it - and I usually do catch it!  I don’t mind now that it’s attached!  It’s much more fun to play with Dad!

Mom and Dad get a good laugh out of me zooming too!  They can't believe that after playing so hard with my teaser pole I have the energy to zoom around like a mad man!  I fly around the yard like a bullet, zoom through my pet door, fly around the living room, and back outside for more zooming!  I even have energy to zoom around and go flying through my hula hoop - which I really Love to do!

Look!  I can Fly!!

With all this fun, you might find it hard to believe that Mom has rules for me!   Rules!  I have to “Sit/Wait” to get out of my crate, to have my meals put down, and to go through doorways.  I am only allowed in the recliner when Mom or Dad are already sitting in it, but even then I have to wait for permission to jump up.  I try hard to respond to the “Hush” command, but you know how that can go sometimes…  Oh!  Then there is the “Leave it” command, and the famous “Off” command.  Good thing I’m smart enough to learn all these rules!

Mom thinks I would be a great dancer – at least that’s what she says!  I like to walk on two legs - and I have very good balance if I say so myself!  I love to try to jump up for attention, but Mom and Dad tell me I only get scratches with “four on the floor”.

I have heard Mom and Dad say that compared to how I was when I first came to live with them, I am much better.  Well, of course!  Geesh!  Like I said, I was a cute little puppy!  They have high hopes, though, and think that by the time I’m five or so - hopefully - I will be mature!  Ha!!   I’m not so sure about it…

Wasn’t I a Cute little Puppy?

So, what do you think about how much I have grown?  Look at all that hair!!!  Good thing Mom is a professional groomer!  I usually get bathed, brushed and combed out every week because Mom likes me fuzzy - like a powder puff.  I have lots more hair than a Cairn so Mom and Dad are sure I have some other DNA mixed in there, but my personality is all Cairn all day long, and I’m really thankful that I got a chance to be rescued by the great Volunteers at Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network.

Thank you for helping me celebrate my First Gotcha Year with my Forever Mom and Dad!!!

Flashback Friday: Trigger Celebrates Two Years in Forever!

Howdy, flatlanders!  What’s that, Mom?...  Oh, ok…  Well, I guess you all might not qualify for that nickname.  I’ve been a Down Easter now for two full years, but I guess I still have some things to learn.

Anyway, you might call me a “Maniac” now, but I prefer “Down Easter” – even though some people think you have to be born here to get that title!  I don’t know where I was born, though, so I think I get a pass on this one.  See, Col. Potter rescued me way back in July, 2012, and sent me up to the wilds of Minnesota.  My skin and coat were in really bad shape, but after Foster Mom got my coat all ship-shape and healthy, Mom adopted me and flew me over to Maine.  It is just about the same kind of weather here, though Mom says the Atlantic Ocean gives us a little better range of temperature than at Foster Mom’s house.

Winter is still a great time to hunt…
…but Spring, Summer, and Fall are much better!
She might have a point because I do get more hunting time out here in the yard, even in the Winter.   Mom is always watching me, of course, so I don’t ever really get to catch anything, but it sure is fun to chase squirrels and chipmunks – and to dig big holes!  I also get to go to the beach sometimes!
I love to go to the beach with Mom!
Sometimes Mom lets me come to work with her, and I go to meetings and sit patiently in a chair, just like a real executive.  That’s OK, but what I really love is to go to dog camp once a week and play with all of my dog buddies!  Of course, I have my BFF Titan at home to cuddle up with, and that’s special too.
It’s nice to have a Special BFF, even if it’s a cat named Titan!
I am so happy that Col. Potter Volunteers were there to help me when I needed help.  Between Foster Mom and my very own Mom, I truly, truly know what it is like to be very well loved and cherished!

Friday Flashback: The Natural!

Written by CP Reenie
Originally posted 11/28/2014 on the Post Adoption Blog

At 9 years old, I'm the baby here!  Mac and Molly are 14!

Foster Mom, PK, I have such good news to tell you!!!

You are Not going to believe this!  Well, actually, maybe you will!

You know, I had that really long, long ride the other day and after we said goodbye and I went off with that nice man, Bill, then I finally met my new Mom.  She brought me home and I met Mac and Molly and Dandi and Allie and Gabby and Ashley and Bridgett and Riley and Grace, and Emma.  I might have forgotten someone, but that was a lot to learn!  Everyone was really excited to meet me and I was really happy to find out that they were all my brothers and sisters now.  Mac was my very special new brother, sticking with me like a guide, making sure I got to meet everyone and see all the fun stuff in the house.  I haven’t decided if I like the sofa or the pretty chair best, so I’m just using them both!  Mom got me a new Winter coat and a new bed and some new toys – it was like Christmas!

So, anyway, the next day Mom took me to the vet to get everything checked out and she found out that I am only nine pounds now!  Taking off a leg is a sort of extreme way to lose weight, and I don’t recommend it, but I have to say that I love the new, trimmer me and I am feeling better and better every day!

I really like this chair, but I Love Mom's lap much better!

Well, the next day Mom took me to the “spa” and got me all spiffed up, and then the next day she took me to “specialty” and emergency vets – really just to show me off, I think.  I mean, I didn’t get poked or prodded or anything, but everyone fussed over me and made me feel very special!

But then something special happened!

Three little children came out of one of the exam rooms and they were all crying and sad.  They saw me and came over and said their dog had just died, so Mom said if they wanted to sit down, I could visit with them for a while – and that’s what I did!  They sat on the chairs and I jumped right up into their laps and let them all pet me while Mom told them the story of my past and how I lost my leg.  It was very interesting because the Mom and Dad of these three kids were both deaf so Mom had to make signs with her hands.  Mom and I spent about a half hour visiting with this family and by the time they decided they needed to go home, the children were not crying anymore and their Mom and Dad did not have that worried look on their faces.

Mom was very proud of me and told me I was “a natural!”  I guess I’m not 100% sure I know what that means, but I loved being the center of attention, and, even more than that, I really loved that I made everyone feel better - and it took no effort at all!  If that’s what Mom meant, then I agree!

I’m a Natural!

Thank you to the wonderful Volunteers of Col. Potter for rescuing me and giving me the opportunity to spread my wings and discover how easy it is to help others.  Thank you Foster Mom for helping me recover and for believing in me!  You did good!

Reenie enjoying her 1st visit to the Lap Factory!

P.S.  I think I found the Lap Factory!  Mom took me to a new place called "Assisted Living" something or other and you would not believe how many laps I found there!  Woohoo!

CP Blackberry nka Berry has his own floatie…

Well, Hello Col. Potter Friends!  It’s been a couple years now since my Foster Dad told me I had found a Forever Home.  You might remember me as CP Blackberry, the Cairn who ate the cell phone, but now I am just Berry, and I just have to say that I am Berry, Berry Happy!

…or he can hitch a ride with Mom!
My new Mom and Dad fit me right into their family, and I love everyone, especially my older brother, Alex.   It’s summer here in Virginia and that means that Alex and I get to play in the pool!  I have my own “floatie” that I love, and I also love to fetch my ball in the pool!  I am an excellent swimmer, and I know how to get in and out of the pool – all by myself!

Berry loves big brother Alex, also a rescued family member.
Berry and Alex consider jumping in after the ball.
Berry loves to ride in the boat!
I also love cruising on our family boat!  I love being part of a family that includes me on so many adventures, big and small.  I guess that’s what Love is all about!  Thank you Col. Potter, and Foster Dad, and everyone else for everything you did to bring so much Love into my life!

Berry likes to keep his eye on the ball!

Friday Flashback: Kessler has no Komplaints!

Written by CP Kessler nka Kepler
Originally posted 8/12/2014 on the Post Adoption Blog

Look at me!  I got a New Mom!!!
You know, it seems like just the other day when those people over at Animal Services rescued me from that awful situation, out in the freezing cold, but then said I was “unadoptable” because I had so many things wrong with me.  I remember looking up at the pity in their eyes, thinking that I was about to have a rendezvous with my maker…

But look at me now!!!!!

That passionate Intake Coordinator over at Col. Potter just wouldn’t give up on me!  Col. Potter to the Rescue!  Nine years old?  No problem!  Sick?  Very sick?  No problem!  Intact?  No problem!  To be fair, they didn’t ask me on that one, but that’s fine.  A sacrifice I was willing to make!

So Col. Potter Rescued me, for real this time, and then my Foster Mom and Dad did an unbelievable job, following the doctors’ orders and getting me healed and healthy again.  I even got my hair back!

Then these really great people - really, really nice! - decided they wanted a mature dog, just like me, to keep Darwin company, and what a great deal that turned out to be!  Darwin, as far as I knew, was a stuffy old scientist of some kind.  I was a little worried because I even think he might not be actually living anymore, so I wasn’t sure what kind of company I was supposed to be keeping, but it turned out that Darwin is a dog!  Another Cairn just like me!  He is great to keep company with!  He will clean out my bowl, even, if I don’t feel like finishing every bite, and he is very good company at the groomers where Mom took us to get cleaned up.

I know this looks bad, but it’s just my new brother Darwin and me waiting for our bath – no problem!
See!  Darwin will clean up my bowl for me - what a guy!
And I have a new name!  Mom and Dad decided they needed another scientist in the house, so they named me “Kepler” after the astronomer, Johannes Kepler.  Now, in all fairness, Darwin and I did keep our eyes on the Super Moon this week, but I don’t think we are going to get carried away with scientific activities.  After all, Darwin and I find keeping our focus on our family and our bright future is more than satisfactory, especially since that’s all about the science of Love!

Thanks to everyone at Col. Potter who put the “R” in Rescue!

Friday Flashback: Teddy Rocks in the Cradle of Forever Love!

Written by Teddy fka CP Sir. Albert
Originally posted 7/4/2014 on the Post Adoption Blog

Teddy fka CP Sir. Albert making himself right at home!

Hi there, Col. Potter Family!  Teddy here!  You probably remember me as CP Sir. Albert, but my Mom and Dad adopted me last October and decided to call me Teddy, I think because I’m so cute like a little Teddy Bear!  I also think my Mom and Dad were a little confused when they adopted me because I’m not really sure if they realize that I’m actually a dog, not their baby?  Not that I’m complaining!  It works out just fine for me!

What a sweet baby!

Mom and Dad adopted me when I was about 6 years old, and I came to them with some bad allergies.  After lots and lots of doctor visits, my Mom and Dad think they are getting me on the right track, and I do feel much better now!  I love my Mom and Dad so much for taking such good care of me, and I show my appreciation by taking my pills with no problems.

Mom and Teddy bundled up to brave the cold Mid-west Winter.
The only thing I think Col. Potter really messed up was that they sent me to a very cold place!  I’m not sure where it is, and I don’t understand why my Mom and Dad would agree to live here, but, boy, did it get cold here!  I had to wear a jacket and booties all Winter when we went outside!  Being the stubborn little Cairn that I am, I showed my disdain for the cold weather by conveniently un-learning all my good potty behaviors.  Yes indeed!  I fixed it so I didn’t have any reason to go out in the cold anymore!

Of course, Mom got wise to what I was doing and started re-training me to go potty outside so I wouldn’t have any excuse.  Actually, it worked in my favor as I got lots and lots of carrots to reward my great behavior.  I did get a little cocky, though, and started to pretend to pee and poo outside just to get carrots.  Worked pretty good at first, but Mom caught on pretty quick and that idea went out the window!  Oh well!

Dad's pillow is just Perfect!
To be honest, however, I’ve been living a pretty good life with Mom and Dad, so I have no complaints.  When I first moved in, Dad had something called “rules” for me and, for example, I wasn’t “allowed” on the couch or in bed.  He-he-he-he!  That didn’t last very long!  Man, do I love to sleep with my Mom and Dad!  When Mommy tells me it’s bed time, I know just what to do: Jump into bed and go straight to Daddy’s spot!  I don’t usually get to stay there too long, but I sure enjoy it while it lasts!

Teddy loves day-care!
Since my parents can’t spend all day every day with me, like I wish they could, they send me to doggy day care at least once a week.  I LOVE day-care!!  As soon as Mommy asks me if I want to go to day-care, I go bonkers!  I can’t help it though!  They have slides, and pools, and people to pet and love on me all day!  Don’t tell my doggy friends, but the ladies at day-care tell me I’m their favorite!  One day when it was rainy at day-care, the vet staff took me into the offices and put me in the break room so they could just play with me - while the other dogs had to play in the kennels all day.  Yup!  Spoiled at home and at day-care!

Teddy just double checking his Dad’s work!
My Mom and Dad must have been pretty bored before they adopted me.  Since I’ve been here, all they ever want to do is hang out with me!!  Whether it’s watching TV, going for walks, or going home to visit family, they want me with them all the time!  I can’t imagine what Mom and Dad did before I arrived, but I’m ok with it.  Being their baby isn’t too bad of a job for a mature little man like me!  Well, maybe “mature” is stretching it a bit!

Yes, all things considered, I’m doing pretty darn good here at my new digs!  Mom and Dad are great – although they could be a little less stingy with the treats!  I’ll give them a little more time and I’m sure they’ll figure it out!

Friday Flashback: Caruso Celebrates His 2nd Gotcha Day!

Contributed by CP Caruso
Originally posted 8/1/2014 on the Post Adoption Blog
CP Caruso is a Happy 4 year old Boy!

Hey!!!  Caruso here!  Can you believe a whole year has gone by since I talked to you guys?  Well, it’s true – and do you know what that means?  Today is my 2nd Gotcha Day!!!  Yay!!!
My Mom and Dad are so Great, they celebrate two special days just for me!  Mom says that because I was rescued by Col. Potter on June 8th, and because nobody knew exactly when my birthday was, she and Dad decided to designate my rescue date as my birthday – so we celebrate on June 8th!  Then, they adopted me officially on August 1st, so that’s my “Gotcha Day!”  Two celebrations and two for-sure sets of new balls!!!

Caruso loves to hang out with big sister, Cindel…
…and he and Wicket have shared lots more brotherly love too!
And there is Lots to celebrate!  Mom says that I am doing much better on walks!  I knew that because I have heard different people giving me compliments!  Last week, for example, I was walking with Wicket and Mom didn't see the big dog coming since he was hidden by some shrubs.  All of a sudden, out pops this girl and her big dog, but Wicket and I didn't bark or anything!  Mom was so impressed!  Wicket doesn't like certain dogs and I have always had issues with most big dogs, so she couldn't believe how good we were - and she didn't have any treats in her pocket!  I think it’s that “maturity” she talked to me about last year, don’t you think?
Actually, I’m not so sure she should have been surprised.  After all, when she took me to my Big Birthday Party in June, I was very well behaved!  She kept calling the party “CRAP” - which I really didn’t understand, but I figured it was some kind of code about my 4th birthday!   Anyway, I think the “maturity” thing started sticking to me then – ‘cause when you’re four, you got bigger responsibilities!

Caruso celebrated his Fourth Birthday at CRAP!
For example, I take full responsibility to get myself into my crate on my own now, and I don’t even wait for Mom to have a treat in her hand first.  This is a big deal, Mom says, because it means I trust her more, and that makes her very happy!  All she has to do is point to my crate now and I go right in!  Even if she walks away for a bit, I will still be sitting there in my crate when she comes back – and she always comes back with a treat!

Waiting for Mom to come home is very mature work!
Yes, I am growing up!  Even my Grandma and Grandpa say the same thing!  Of course, Grandma gets to observe my “maturity” quite a lot because I like to follow her around when I’m over at their house – which makes me a Grandma's Boy as well as a Mama's Boy!

Shhhhh… I’m hiding…
Don’t worry!  I’ll never let “maturity” take all of me!  I still love to play ball, any time, any place, and that is very, very good!  In the morning, Mom plays fetch with me for a while, and then I snuggle into my special "hidey spot" at the end of the bed when she is getting ready to go to work – just like I did when I was just a two-year old baby!
Some things shouldn’t ever be changed by “maturity”!
Thanks again to everyone in Col. Potter who worked so hard to save me and set me up for the Best two years of my life - so far!
