COL. POTTER WELCOMES THE WINDY CITY KIDS VIII !!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

How do you say good-bye to your life's love, your babies, over a three year period, one by one, each one hurting as much or more than the last one? How do you let your life's passion that you have been involved with for more than 50 years go? How do you face your final years knowing that you can know longer care for your babies and have to trust someone to take them, care for them and find them wonderful homes for the rest of their lives? Col. Potter has been the one that has been there for the past three years for the Windy City Kids and will be there for the final one. In the previous seven groups of Windy City Kids we have taken in 46 Cairns including 2 puppies that were born to Altgeld in CP.

With WCK VIII, we now add six more for a current total of 52. There are six more Cairns the breeder still has and is trying valiantly to care for, but her health is really a struggle right now and in all reality, her health will not get better. But she loves these Cairns desperately and truly, without having at least some of them around her for as long as possible, it would literally kill her. So, she is going to try to keep the last six as long as she can, but has agreed they will come to Col. Potter when she is no longer able to care for them. This has been a heartwrenching journey for all involved ...

Please Welcome the Windy City Kids VIII - named for Chicago Sports Teams:

Blackhawks: Female, black brindle, 8 years old

Cubbies: Female, wheaten, 6 years old

Fire: Female, red wheaten, 6 years old

Bulls: Male, red wheaten, 7 years old, brother of Bears

Sox: Female, wheaten, 6 years old

Bears: Male, wheaten, 7 years old, brother of Bulls

My thanks to Mary C. and her sister, Carol A., for picking up the WCK VIII, getting the pictures and delivering them to the vet for their boarding and vetting.

The Windy City Kids are not puppymill kids - far from it! They came from a breeder who was once world renowned for her Cairns and had International Champions in her kennel. She has loved every single Cairn that she has ever owned, she knows their names, ages and their lineage in her head and it really hurts her to have to give them away now and get out of Cairns, but time and aging stand still for no one. As you look at the pictures of the WCK VIII, please think of a very special lady who is doing what is best for her babies ... as her heart breaks.

WELCOME SPUMONI TO CP!!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

Well, once you meet CP's newest "flavor", you're just going to love it or should I say her! This little girl came from a breeder that we have gotten several other Cairns from over the past few years. The dogs are generally in good condition, have been well cared for and pretty friendly and socialized, as far as PM kids go. The breeder generally releases them when they reach mid-age or if they have any physical problems. That's how this little girl got her freedom... She just whelped a litter of puppies two weeks ago, but had a very difficult time, delivering three puppies alive, but then shutting down her delivery efforts, had no milk and finally, hours later, delivered three other puppies already dead. Her puppies that were alive were given to a different mother to care for and she was given the necessary medications to "clean her out" and protect against infection from the dead puppies. The breeder decided her breeding days were over and contacted me to see if we had room for her.

On a warm summer day what could be better than a big, freshly made scoop of Spumoni ice cream in a waffle cone. That's exactly whatour volunteers stopped to enjoy on the way home from picking up this little girl. Spumoni is a taste sensation of different flavors and textures, very much like the beautiful multi-color brindle coat on this little girl and so, it gives me great pleasure to introduce Spumoni! She just celebrated her 4th birthday, but I bet it didn't include any ice cream. Hey did you share your ice cream with Spumoni? My thanks, as always, to them for picking up Spumoni and for the pictures. Please help me welcome Spumoni to CP!

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, CP WELCOMES RIPLEY!!

Written by CP VP of Intakes

Leroy "Robert" Ripley was a cartoonist, explorer, reporter, adventurer, illustrator, collector and seeker of the odd and unusual. Millions of people worldwide have visited his exhibits and museums to view his collection of oddities and share his adventures.

Most of the dogs used for breeding in Clark County, Wisconsin end up at the Thorp Dog Auction when they have outlived their usefulness, don't produce or just aren't wanted anymore. They don't generally release dogs to rescue if there is money to be made off their backs yet, even if just $5 at auction. So, to have a miller release a dog to rescue is an oddity in this area and a rare occurrence indeed. This little Cairn was the last Cairn this miller had left in his breeding stock. Apparently he wasn't saleable and we can only guess that it might have been due to his skin infections. Believe It Or Not, this probably saved him from spending the rest of his life as a breeder and the reason he found his way into the loving arms of CP!

Ripley is already making the most of his freedom ... he is sweet, friendly and happily wags his tail at those he recognizes. The vet estimates Ripley to be between 1 and 2 years old.

Ripley also has a special Guardian Angel watching over him. His name was donated by Carmen and John Steele in memory of their wonderful Cairn, Ripley. My thanks also to the rescue angels who alerted me to Ripley and helped to get him to safety and freedom!

The world awaits Ripley to explore and have a lifetime of adventure and I know there is the perfect forever family just waiting out there to share his adventures with him ... WELCOME to CP Ripley ... Believe It Or Not!

Welcome Matilda!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Please help me Welcome Col. Potter's newest beauty, Matilda. Matilda joined CP Sunday, and she is happy to be here.

Matilda is a breeder surrender, one of the 'lucky' ones. Her breeder does not believe in keeping her stock until they are of no more use to her. She retires them young, so that they can have a good life as a pet in a home. Matilda just turned four in December.

Matilda will be spending this week getting her spa treatment, and her medical care. She will then move to her foster home, and start on the road to learning all about family life.

Thanks Col. Potter, for once again helping a cairn in need!

Welcome, Matilda!
