Welcome Smuckers to the CP family!

Everyone has seen the Smuckers jam commercials! "With a name like Smuckers, it's gotta be good". Recently " Well, today was a particularly "good" day for this 8 yr old cairn boy. Every rescue is a happy event for the Col. Potter family. Smuckers' rescue was particularly good as his life was literally saved yesterday. Col. Potter only learned that Smuckers was at risk early yesterday afternoon. After a quick call to the shelter, Smuckers fate was discovered and Col. Potter promptly turned those plans around. This morning, Smuckers trotted out with a smile on his face and his tail wagging to meet his rescuer."

 A big thank you to Kathy H. for rushing out this morning to welcome this very happy boy into the Col. Potter family!

Please welcome Stoney and Poochie to Col. Potter. Stoney is a 5 year old male and Poochie is a 5 year old female. They are both described as well-loved, happy little cairns. Another case of family circumstances causing upheaval and the need to find a new place to call home. We know how well cairns adapt to whatever life throws at them and that they will happily adjust to their new lives. Welcome sweet kids!

Introducing Squire

Squire was taken from his owners due to neglect. Poor baby was severely under weight; the shelter personnel estimated his weight at 9 lbs when he came to them. With two decent meals a day, he gained almost 2 pounds while he was in their care. The shelter held him in case his owners wanted to reclaim him, but didn’t expect them to due to all the fines they faced.

They were right, the owners did not want him, and Squire was put up for adoption. The shelter even made him pet of the week in an attempt to save him as he had been at the shelter the longest of all the dogs. However, the shelter had too many nice small dogs and Squire did not get adopted. Col. Potter was called, and last week Squire became our newest intake.

What do you do when you have the opportunity of a lifetime to pursue your chosen career but it requires extensive travel abroad? What do you do when you learn you must leave everything behind--including your beloved cairn terrier?

Of course, you seek out a wonderful rescue that will ensure that your cairn will continue to be loved and appreciated. That is exactly the decision made by the former owner of Col. Potter's Momo. Please welcome this adorable 7 yr old black brindle boy. This little guy is sure to find an adoring home quickly. He is friendly, affectionate, and knows numerous commands and tricks.

Tolstoy, our newest CP intake

Tolstoy was found by an elderly couple roaming around a cemetery on a lonely country road far outside of town. They vetted and loved Tolstoy, but already having several dogs themselves, they decided they just could not keep one more. CP was called, and Tolstoy was handed over to us this weekend. He is reportedly good with other dogs, housebroken, plays fetch and will release to you, walks nicely on a leash, bright and learns quickly.

Minx is a charming 3-year-old cairn girl who is very sweet natured and playful with good energy. This beautiful little girl was in a shelter fighting off skin and ear infections when she started out on her journey towards the arms of CP.

Please welcome Rita to our clan! Rita is a vivacious 4-year-old world traveler who had her puppy beginnings in Merry Old England. She crossed the pond with her people and landed in the US.

Unfortunately, though she was much loved in the new world she found herself in, that world was not big enough for both her and a small child. Rita has once again packed her bags and has come to stay with Col. Potter until she finds her forever home.

A Toddy for Col. Potter!

The Intakes Team is convinced that a little black brindle angel is guiding all of these dark brindle cairns to Col. Potter. We have had an unusually high number in the past several weeks and appreciate the little angel’s assistance in getting them to safety.

This gorgeous little 3-5 year old male cairn was picked up as a stray – no microchip or tags and no one came looking for him. A big thank you to Deb S for getting him from the shelter to the vet this morning. Deb says he seems very friendly and happy, but he does bark at the other dogs. Maybe he’s just bragging about his good fortune in finding refuge with Col. Potter.

Introducing Stewy!

Stewy walked into a woman's yard one day and started playing with her little dog. This woman, being a dog lover herself, took Stewy into her heart and home. However, she just couldn’t take on the expense of another dog. She put a free-to-good-home ad in the local paper. Luckily, Col. Potter has volunteers that spend a part of every day searching these ads and they found Stewy.

Stewy is estimated to be 2 years old, weighs 13.2 lbs and is currently at his week long spa stay at the vet’s office.

I’d like everyone to give Stewy a great big CP welcome!

Who you callin' Yeller?

Yeller is a 2 year old active male cairn that was purchased as a companion to an aging couple. His cairn spirit was too much for this older couple to handle, and Col. Potter was asked to help Yeller find a good home.

A warm welcome to Stoddie and Nanna!

Last week, two very lucky cairns joined the Col. Potter family.

Volunteers picked up these two and chose their new names. Chosen from one of the volunteer's Slovak heritage, their names are terms of endearment for the eldest relatives in the family--the men are called Stoddie and the women, Nanna.

Stoddie is a gorgeous red wheaten boy estimated to be 3-4 years old.

Both kids are having their spa treatments and will move to their foster homes this weekend.

Say howdy to Cisco Kid!

Please welcome our new boy, Cisco Kid. After a long incarceration, Cisco Kid was set free to join Col. Potter.



He is a sweet boy, the favorite of the vet staff who have cared for him. Estimated to be around 7 years old, he has a calm disposition that endears all who meet him.

The Sky's the Limit...in Col. Potter!

For those that are lucky enough to find their way into Col. Potter, truly The Sky's the Limit! But now consider what those "limits" are. Col. Potter can only help as many Cairns as we have resources for.

This past weekend, the Sky was the Limit for two Cairns who did make their way into CP. They were helped as a result of the Name a Puppy Mill dog Program. With the holidays fast approaching, what a wonderful gift for someone who has everything, a dog lover on your list, or a special remembrance of someone gone. Plus, it is a quick easy way to facilitate your holiday shopping and help CP continue to offer The Sky's the Limit to so many Cairns.

Skyekerr got to celebrate her 6th birthday in FREEDOM! Skyekerr is a donated name in memory of little Skye who was lost earlier this year and found her way to the Rainbow Bridge. It was donated by one of our CRM members and CP Officers.

Introducing Taz who was brought into Col. Potter last Saturday. He is estimated to be about 1 1/2 years old. His foster home says he is a smart little man with lots of personality and he listens well and knows commands.

Sweet older cairns Jemma and McEos join Col. Potter!

Two sweet older cairns joined the CP family this weekend.

Jemma, 11 years old, and McEos, 9 years old, found themselves in need of a new home due to extreme life changes for their owner. While it broke the owner's heart to find a new home for them, she had to do what was in their best interest. Luckily for Jemma and McEos, she contacted Col. Potter and we were able to help.

Welcome Duff to the Col. Potter family!

This sweet boy is estimated to be 3-4 years old and is as cute as can be. Duff is Gaelic for 'dark' and suits him well.

Welcome Husker to CP!!

There’s a new little Cornhusker! His name is “Husker” and he’s 8 months old. Well, he’s ready for all that life has to offer and he’s going to be on the frontlines waiting for that special family that will give him all the love and care he deserves.

CP was there to welcome this boy with open arms and I’m sure that there is a family out there ready to do the same. He’s a cutie and I think you will agree!

THREE FILM STARS PREMIERING NOW IN CP!!

Life is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're going to get" is a line from the 1994 film Forrest Gump. This film taught many life lessons about never giving up, seeing the world a little differently and being able to do just about anything if you put your mind to it. In many ways, our rescue Cairns are alot like some of the main characters from this film. Forrest Gump said "You've always got to put the past behind you before you can move on."

This weekend, three little Cairn boys did put the past behind them and are now moving on to a life of love and freedom with Col. Potter. While we never know exactly what we're going to be getting when we dip into the "box of chocolates", I'm certain that these three are all something very sweet.

Forrest is Male, DOB 11/21/03, wheaten - he's the shy one of the group and sits and shakes, but loves to get skritches.




Lt. Dan is Male, DOB 9/4/03, red wheaten - he's athletic and appears to have had something to cause him to lose the black pigment on his upper left lip.



Bubba Gump is Male, DOB 4/11/05, dark brindle - he's a talker who loved getting a bath. Bubba Gump is a donated name from the Name a PM Kid Program. He is named in honor and memory of another Bubba Gump from New Jersey.



Thanks to two incredible people who are always there and ready to help the furkids. A photo album follows.

"I'm not a smart man, but I know what love is" -- another wonderful line from the movie and one that if these little boys don't already know what love is, they will soon learn. Please help me welcome Forrest, Lt. Dan and Bubba Gump who now has a special Guardian Angel as his "best good friend".

WINDY CITY KIDS IX BLOW IN TO CP!!

Two more of the Windy City Kids have now joined the CP family. Chicago is home to some of the best food around. Many food companies have had their start in Chicago. Two of the sweetest ones are Maurice Lenell Cookies and Ferrara Pan Candy Company. Maurice Lenell was a Swedish cookie maker who opened his own bakery in Chicago in 1937. Is there anyone who hasn't enjoyed a Pinwheel cookie in their life? Ferrara Pan was started by Salvatore Ferrara who came to America from Nola, Italy in 1900 and founded Ferrara Pan Candy Company in 1908 in Chicago.

I don't think there is anyone that hasn't been to the movies and enjoyed a box of Red Hots, Jawbreakers, Lemonheads or Boston Baked Beans. These two sweet little furkids are named after these all-time favorite Chicago sweet treats:
