Welcome Kiera to Col. Potter!!

Written by CP Intakes Coordinator

Cairns can be cute, cuddly, affectionate and fun little dogs. Just like people, some of these traits are passed down through generations. Little Miss Kiera has been a mama to some of the nicest and sweetest cairns who inherited her genes. Her gentle disposition and sweet personality shines through on a cloudy day. She was part of a breeding pair and when Kiera gave up the life of being a cairn mama a few years ago, she remained with the breeder. She did not come from a puppy mill but was part of a small breeder operation.

She's been a wife and mother. She is now looking forward to the single life! No more puppies or raising kids for her. She can't wait to live the life she's heard about from other retired working girls. Kiera is 8 years old, a cute red head weighing in at 17 pounds, just right for her build. She passed her vet visit today with flying colors and also charmed the vet with her winning ways!

Kiera has a nice full coat and a jaunty little walk. When she walks away from you with her tail held high, strutting her stuff, she looks like she has little bloomers on which has earned her the nickname of Miss Fancy Pants! This little lady is a mellow, sweet cairn with a gleam in her eye! Kiera is looking forward to learning about being a cairn princess and finding her very own forever home! Please welcome Kiera!

A NEW GIRL JOINS CP WITH A SPECIAL NAME

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

Wesky

All of the furkids that come through CP are special, but some just touch our hearts a little more. I'm always particularly touched by the older furkids that have spent their entire lives in a puppymill and especially the older mill mamas. They have given and given until they have nothing left to give. No one has ever given anything to them, but they have given birth to litter after litter of puppies, more than likely every six months. They have nourished and cared for their babies until they were taken away from them, more than likely at a very early age. They didn't get any medical care, any soft, comfy spot to whelp and care for their babies, no special vitamins or food to supplement themselves or their babies. Their bodies are pretty much used up and then discarded.

One such mill mama that has forever touched my heart was CP's Wesson, known as Sparky to her mom and dad, Lori and Mike R. Wesson was almost 12 years old when she came into CP and I fought to make sure she made it into CP and didn't end her life in the Puppy Mill. We truly thought she would come into CP to be held in loving arms while she crossed the Rainbow Bridge. She had so many medical issues to deal with. But Wesson had other thoughts and enjoyed her freedom and being Queen of her Castle with Lori and Mike for several more years.

In honor and memory of Wesson aka Sparky, please help me Welcome Wesky (WESson and SparKY). Coincidentally, Wesky made her way from Arkansas (where the Rs live) all the way to Wisconsin to be surrendered to Col. Potter. The daughter of a breeder I work with up here in Wisconsin lives in Arkansas. When it was time for her to release Wesky, she only wanted her to come to CP to insure she was well taken care of and found a wonderful home. Her mother has raved about how good CP is to work with and what wonderful care we have taken care of her Cairns she has released to us. So, this past weekend, Wesky traveled from Arkansas to Wisconsin and I picked her up yesterday.

Wesky is an adorable, friendly, lively, little 13 pound, 4 year old female. I've already warned her foster mom, Julie R., to make sure she has a BIG sign and lots of them scattered around her home. This little girl is something special ... just like her namesake. I know Wesson/Sparky is looking down and will keep a close eye on Wesky until she finds her forever home ...

Welcome Baby Leona!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

Can you imagine being a 3 month old puppy and facing death? That's the situation Leona found herself in.

The breeder suspected there might be something wrong with Leona as she would occasionally not eat, would just lay around and would whimper softly. She was taken to the breeder's vet who gave her a clean bill of health. So, little Leona was sold to a pet home where she lived for over a month. But the pet family also noticed that on occasion she would not eat, would just lay around and would cry. They also took her to their vet, who could only determine there might be something wrong with her jaw. The pet family decided to return Leona to the breeder for a healthy puppy.

This almost was the end of Leona. The breeder didn't know what was wrong with Leona, but knew she couldn't sell her, so the only thing left to do was euthanize her. The breeder had only had Leona for a day when she decided to give me a call before taking her to the vet to be put to sleep on the off chance I could help. As she explained and described what was happening with Leona, all I could think of was it sounded like CMO - Lion's Jaw. It's not uncommon for vets to miss this diagnosis as many have no experience with a dog having this condition. We don't have a confirmed diagnosis yet, just my suspicions. Col. Potter agreed to bring Leona into the family, saving her life!

I had the privilege of picking up Leona this afternoon and she got to spend about an hour at my house exploring the yard and posing for some pictures. Then it was off again to meet her foster mom and dad, Kay & Bob H. and time to head for her foster home.

We don't know yet how long or difficult Leona's journey will be, but do know with the support and love of her CP Family, Leona will have a bright future. Kay & Bob chose the name Leona which means Lion in Irish. Little Leona will be joining our Guardian Angel program and would greatly appreciate your support. Please keep Leona and her foster family in your thoughts .. it could be a long, tough journey ahead of them.

Introducing Guido!

Our rescue contact in North Central Kansas had a cairn in her most recent round of breeder releases. May I present Guido, whose name was donated in the "Name a Mill Dog" program.

He is just over 3 years old and is very people friendly, although he does not seem to know what a leash is. He was interested in the vet clinic cats, but didn't seem to want to eat any. :) Guido is a sturdy guy weighing in at about 19 lb and is neither too fat nor too lean. Sadly he was shaved down to his skivvies, but should be a gorgeous silver grey when he re-grows his coat. After his initial vet work he will be fostered with Kaaren J.

Please welcome Guido!

Welcome Badger!

We have a new handsome guy joining the ranks of Col. Potter. His name is Badger, after the state animal of Wisconsin and proud mascot for the University of Wisconsin. He is a year old and was from a large breeder release. There's something special about Badger - instead of facing the fate of many breeder dogs, he was taken to a safe place which in turn contacted Col. Potter. With the help of Joan and Mary Jean he made his way to the vet clinic for his physical, so important for a young man like Badger! During his stay at the clinic he worked his magic on the staff. He went from a shy but somewhat friendly and playful guy to a major flirt and a fun kind of guy! Just check out the build on this guy - even with his Marine cut you can tell he's going to be a looker. Watch out Fabio!!

He will be enjoying a stay with his new foster mom, Carla in Wisconsin. Many thanks to Joan, Mary Jean, Mary C. and Carla for their part in Badger's trip to freedom.
