True Love Comes to Col. Potter!

Valentine's Day is the celebration of love, recognized around the world and it speaks a universal language.  Love knows no age restrictions and has no boundaries.  When you think of Great Lovers, you may think of Romeo & Juliet, Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton, Sir Lancelot & Queen Guinevere, Grace Kelly & Prince Rainier, Adam & Eve, Bogey & Bacall, or maybe even Bonnie & Clyde.  And now, CP is adding it's very own pair of Great Lovers -- Paul & Joanne -- yes, just like dreamy blue eyed Paul Newman and his lifelong love and wife Joanne Woodward.

CP's True Love couple have been together for many years.  They have only been separated once during their union, and Paul just about died of a broken heart.  As they grew older, they were no longer wanted and luckily were saved in the nick of time from a date with a bullet. Knowing their attachment, it was impossible to find a rescue group that could guarantee they would go to the same foster home and ultimately, the same adoptive home.  Impossible until CP came to the rescue.  CP was able to make their love story continue and grant their Valentine's Day wish for a continued lifetime together for Paul and Joanne.

May we present, for the very first time, as CP's True Love, Paul and Joanne:

#4367 Paul:  Black Brindle, DOB 5/2/01, just 10.6#, very friendly and extremely handsome, just like his namesake;

#4368 Joanne:  Light Wheaten/Cream, DOB 12/1/03, a motherly weight of 19 lbs., and likes to stay a little more in the background and defer to Paul, but friendly;

This True Love would not have been possible without the help of Kathy H. in picking up the couple and Kaaren J. for giving these two a home while they search for their Forever home together.

True Love is definitely a love story for the ages!!!

An Uphill Run for CP’s Downhill Skiers!

The most successful downhill skier of all times is Ingemar Stenmark from Sweden who won 86 World Cup competitions and several gold medals in the Olympics.  Two of the top 5 female downhill skiers having the most World Cup wins are Vreni Schneider (SUI), with 55, and Renate Götschl (AUT), with 46.

Three gorgeous Cairns skied into CP's Rescue lodge, looking for a warm respite.  While they love the snow and cold, everyone needs a chance to warm up at night.

Cailleach Collaborates with Col. Potter!

Cailleach, a sweet, 9 year old, Black Brindle Female

Please give a warm Col. Potter greeting to Cailleach, a wise and witty elder from the highlands who has packed up kit and parcel to come over to join our CP clan.

This lovely 9 year-old Black Brindle girl is a big cuddlebug, weighing in at a trim 26 lbs (!).  Thing weren't working out very well for Cailleach at her home, so now she needs a new home to call her own.  With the super spa treatment and excellent and loving care she'll receive here with Col. Potter, she is sure to find that new Forever home very soon!

A Whole New World for LeeCee!

LeeCee, 5 year old Black Brindle Female

There comes a time when you take a look at yourself and ask "Is this what I want to do the rest of my life??"  Well that's exactly what LeeCee did one day and made a BIG decision!  She said "The heck with this working girl's life - I'm retiring"!!!  And she did!  She packed her bags and headed straight to Col. Potter!  She had heard that's where Cairns go to find the good life.  She's a small town girl but has heard about finer things and decided they should be all hers! 

Her unique name comes from the Name – A – Cairn program thanks to a donation from Maureen H. in honor of Valerie K.'s mother who passed away recently.  Valerie's mother's nickname was Lee, last name started with C so “LeeCee” was the name for this special girl.  Valerie's mom had a taste for the finer things in life, just like LeeCee.  After all, don't all females deserve the best?  LeeCee thinks so!

This beautiful 5 year old Black Brindle is ready to become a princess!   Some of the things on LeeCee's must have list are: comfy bed, great food, and fresh beverages daily, maid service, premium TV stations (cable or satellite will do), a chaise lounge would be nice, but most of all lots of tender neck rubs!  

She is heading to the spa to get ready for Foster care.

Jinty joins CP

Please Welcome Jinty to Col. Potter. She found herself living in a home with children who did not know how to respect her. Her mom tried her best to get the children to understand how important it was to respect and give a dog its space, but they were just to young to understand. The owner decided to contact CP for help.

Jinty is now in her foster dad's home ready to begin a new life. Please welcome her with open arms!

Russell T - The Tale of a Survivor!

Now and then a cairn comes into Col. Potter that has a tale to tell. Russell T is lucky to be here today to tell his tale and what a tale it is!

Not long ago a person was driving down a long country road. I'm sure you've been on one those roads - no houses for miles, just a long road, maybe some wire fences surrounding the occasional farmer's field. You know, the kind of road that never ends and you hope your car doesn't break down because there's NOTHING for miles!

Well, one person was traveling down such a road and suddenly spotted two cairns - out in the middle of nowhere!! The cairns were picked up and taken to a cairn person for help. This person did everything imaginable to locate the owner(s) of the two cairns. No collars, no tags, no microchips, no reports with agencies or law officials that these cairns were missing or that anyone was looking for them. Pictures were emailed to all vets in the area, still nothing. After all efforts were exhausted, the caretaker began the process of helping these two cairns to a new life. One cairn found a wonderful, dedicated home but Russell T was still homeless. His caretaker contacted Col. Potter for help. Today Russell T became a Col. Potter kid.

As if being dumped in winter in the countryside to die isn't bad enough, Russell T was discovered to be heart worm positive. He's going to be starting treatment soon. With the help of Col. Potter's Medical Team and his wonderful foster home, he's looking forward to a new life and bright future. Russell T is a gorgeous black brindle with red/mahogany accents. He's estimated to be 7 to 8 years old and has a charming personality.

Russell T is named after the renowned author, Russell T. Davies of Dr. Who fame. CP's Russell T is anxious to start the next chapter of his tale. He has told me that he expects a happy ending of good health, a great home and forever love.

Let's give Russell T a warm Col. Potter welcome as well as all our support for a full recovery and a great life ahead!

Welcome Mouse to Col. Potter!

Mouse’s life has not been an easy one. He was born to a back yard breeder and sold to a family when he was 2 years old. His new Owner noticed he had a very bad limp, which turned out to be an unhealed fractured hip. Mouse had surgery to correct his hip, which was successful; today he can run and play as if nothing was ever wrong. Mouse’s family was not equipped to deal with a healthy, active male cairn.

He found himself outside all day while his Owners were at work, only to be brought in a night for dinner and bed in a screened in porch, he was never allowed in the house. Not surprisingly, Mouse never house trained. Realizing this situation was not ideal for Mouse, his Owner’s contacted CP. Our intakes team tried to work with Mouse’s Owner to house train him, but it proved too much for the Owners. Once again, CP was contacted, and today, Mouse became our newest CP kid. I’d like everyone to give Mouse a warm CP welcome.

Introducing Aphra

Please help me welcome Aphra, an adorable 5 year old female who is very sweet and quite friendly. She has a lot to learn about freedom including what grass is and what are collars and leashes and walks. She's also camera shy of that strange little box with the flashy thing on it.

With a face like hers, I'm sure this it is just the first of many pictures that will be taken of this little black beauty. Aphra is currently enjoying her spa treatment and lots of extra special attention before moving to her foster home.

Wheldon zoomes into CP!

It was only a few weeks ago that Indy car driver Dan Wheldon was on top of the world, with a loving family, a dream job, and his future was bright. He loved by everyone who knew him. A horrible accident and twist of fate ended the life of Dan Wheldon leaving a big hole in many hearts. Today a handsome 9 year old black & silver brindle cairn joined Col. Potter named in honor of Dan Wheldon.

CP Wheldon also had a loving family and everything a cairn could want. He had been with his family since puppyhood and was a beloved only dog child. He did have a cat sibling to keep things interesting. A twist of fate changed everything. With great sadness and heavy hearts, his family sought out Col. Potter to ensure Wheldon found a new home to love him as much as they do.

Wheldon loves baths, tennis balls and belly rubs. If a lap is available, Wheldon will be there. His B&B hostess said he is very endearing, asks for belly rubs and takes treats with a 'soft' mouth. Wheldon is wondering what happened to the wonderful world he knew. Soon Wheldon will know the family of Col. Potter and all the goods things that will bring!

McEban joins the CP family!

Please give a warm welcome to a sweet gentleman, McEban.

McEban is a darling, yet a little tubby. He's 8 years young. He needed a new home without children, so his family worked with Col. Potter to give him a chance at a good life. He is going to lose some of his extra padding and attend boot camp to modify any inappropriate behaviors.

I expect he will do very well, as initial reports are glowing! He will be ready for his new family shortly.

Willoughby

This adorable, little black brindle, 1-2 year old, male cairn found himself in a shelter and needed a place to go. Fortunately, Col. Potter was able to rescue him. He’s currently at the vet and will be heading to his foster home next weekend.

Willoughby’s name was chosen by Amy Robinson and Brian Antosh in the “Name A Rescue Cairn” fundraiser. They took up a collection at a Col. Potter Public Relations event they hosted, and collected enough to name a cairn. Thank you Amy and Brian!!

Roger joins CP

This extremely handsome little 3-5 year old cairn became a Col. Potter kid this week. He was picked up by Animal Services and taken to a small urban shelter. He had no microchip or tags and the shelter was unsuccessful locating his owner. The shelter supervisor was very surprised that no one came looking for him since he’s well groomed, well fed, very sociable and may even be housebroken. The shelter does not have an adoption program and contacted us to see if we could take him, which fortunately, we could.

Volunteer Marsha picked him up from the shelter this week and said he’s a real sweetheart, albeit a little overweight. He even gave her a kiss on her cheek while she was dressing him with his harness and collar. He’ll be spending the week at the vet and heading to his foster home next weekend.

Ruffy is 4.5 years old and came from a very loving home. He’s housebroken, loves people and other animals. He’s also described as independent and headstrong. Of course, that describes most cairns doesn’t it?

Introducing Teagan!

Teagan is a beautiful black brindle girl, almost 7 years old, who has joined the Col. Potter family. She is a little confused about the change in her life but with the help and support of her Col. Potter family, she should find that life is lots of fun when you're a Col. Potter kid.

Sometimes a cairn comes into rescue because it's the best thing for the cairn. A family's heart is broken when they realize they cannot give what is needed to make a beloved pet happy as he or she once was. Such is the case with Teagan.

She was very loved, well cared for and only knew one home. She was adored and loved the attention which was all hers. One day her human parents brought home a little baby, a new family member that also was adored and loved. Life was good for everyone including Teagan. Later when the family grew again, Teagan realized these cute little humans were getting some of her attention and not going away! Poor Teagan became withdrawn and sad. She was no longer an only child. Teagan, unlike some cairns, did not do anything destructive, was not mean to the children, she just moped and longed for the way things were. Out of love, her family made the tough decision to let Col. Potter find a new home for Teagan where she can become a Princess once again!

Noir slinks into CP!

Noir was picked up as a “running stray” by an animal control warden and placed in an overcrowded shelter. She showed no aggression with other dogs, food or toys. However, on her socialization and cage behavior assessment, she was terrified. The shelter coordinator thought she would come around, but was not being recommended for general adoption and they could not hold on to her any longer. Col. Potter was emailed, and Noir was was accepted into our Network!

Bo'Bo bounds into CP

There was no time to contact anyone, if someone didn’t get Bo’Bo out of the shelter before the end of the day, Bo’Bo would be put to sleep by the next morning. Not knowing if he was a cairn terrier or a mix didn’t matter. He was a puppy, and there was no way she was going to let a puppy die. A Col. Potter volunteer left work early, and sped down to the not so local Humane Society to rescue this little man. Bo’Bo was literally saved with minutes of his PTS time.

Bo’Bo has a cold, so his vetting will take a little normal than usual. We’re not sure of his weight, or even his age (he is a puppy), but we are sure he is a CP kid now, safe and warm in his foster mom’s house.

Introducing Kai

Please help welcome Col. Potter's Kai. This seven year old black brindle girl was surrendered to a shelter in March, adopted in April, and returned in early July. She is a typical smart, strong, happy female cairn. Like many of our girls, probably smarter than the people who found her so cute and sweet they adopted her. No homework done, no terrier experience. I can just picture her evaluating the situation, sizing them up, and seeing that clearly that she could run the household! She wasn't the lap dog they envisioned!

Kai spent 6 weeks at the shelter. The staff realized she is a great dog, for the right terrier-savvy family. When no such family appeared, they made plans to contact CP. As often happens, one of our many dedicated volunteers found her, and sent her information into the Rescue Team. Within three days from initial contact, Kai was picked up. She is having her spa treatment this week, and will move to her foster home next weekend. Her future looks very bright, she's on her road to a family that will love her strong cairn traits!

CP has TRANQUILITY & FASCINATION

I often wonder what thoughts go through the minds of these little furkids when--after years in small crates, producing litter after litter of puppies with little care or concern given to them--they reach freedom and for the first time ever enjoy a bath, a clean, soft place to lay, don't have to fight for food or water. These sound like the very basics and the bare minimum might be considered neglect by our own spoiled little snots who are accustomed to so much more!

The words Tranquility and Fascination come to mind as emotions these new found freedom furkids might experience as they learn to adjust to this new wonderful, yet scary and very different world. I would hope a sense of tranquility would envelope them and in time allow them to relax and feel secure. Fascination, even through their fear, would have to get the better of them simply because they are Cairns and it's their nature to be inquisitive and love to explore.

This week, two female Cairns won their freedom and now will hopefully experience the emotions they are named after.

In order for Col. Potter to be able to continue to help Cairns like Tranqulity and Fascination, we need the help of all volunteers, but especially need foster homes right now. The very busy season when dogs are released by breeders is just around the corner. In order to be ready to welcome these Cairns to freedom, we need to have the foster homes, ready and waiting to take them in. If you would like to foster for Col. ADDED DIVIDEND TO CP's BALANCE THE BUDGET

While the federal government finally came to an agreement on the US budget, the stock market across the globe has reacted with a wild ride the last few days. Investors have had to fasten their seat belts once again and prepare for losses in their portfolios. Col. Potter, on the other hand, managed to reap a Dividend yesterday amid the chaos on Wall Street.

The final member of the Balance the Budget kids finally made her way to the safety and security of Col. Potter. Little Dividend was not able to join CP a couple of weeks ago because she had recently whelped a litter of puppies and had to stay behind to care for them and wait until they were weaned to earn her freedom. We were not able to bring her puppies into CP, but they will all be heading for family pet homes shortly.

Please help me welcome Dividend, an adorable little 3 year old black brindle girl to the Col. Potter family.
