TAKE A LOOK AT CP'S VACATION MEMORIES

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

There's nothing better than letting your mind drift back to special memories of vacations past. Or finding a long lost box with pictures of long ago travels and journeys you recall like it was just yesterday. Such a sweet release and escape from our everyday lives...

Recently, two little Cairns are embarking on their own travel and journey to freedom, making new, positive memories along their way. Both of their names were donated by one of our members as she was rediscovering some vacation memories one day. Thanks Claire M. for dusting off those old photo albums and deciding to help these two little Cairns be the subject of some new photo albums and memories.

Introducing CP's Vacation Memories:

Dublin - Male, red wheaten with dark ears, estimated to be 5 years old. He's a little shy, but will warm up quickly with a little TLC.

Jumby - Female, golden wheaten with dark ears, estimated to be 6-8 years old, she needs a little help from a weight loss program, but is super sweet and friendly and ready to grab her new found freedom with all 4 paws. She is still available for adoption and she is being fostered in Pennsylvania, you can learn more about here by clicking  here .

Our Name a Cairn Program is a wonderful way to celebrate or remember someone special in your life, but can also be a great way to recall special events like Claire did and still help the little Cairns we all love so much. I would like to thank Claire for her donation, but also thank a couple of rescue angels who are helping to make Jumby and Dublin's first trips possible--Lisa B. and Kim and Donald.

I know Dublin and Jumby are going to enjoy the journey of a lifetime and fill many a photo album on their way to a happily every after. Please help me welcome them to the CP family and wish them a Bon Voyage!

Welcome Bocce the Benissimo!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Bocce ball is a popular game in Italy. Bocce ball is played in a sand pit--every cairn's dream. When we think of Bocce ball games we envision fun, laughter and friendly competition. This fits our newest CP boy like a glove! He's friendly, makes you laugh and is always ready to compete in a game involving every cairn's version of a bocce ball--the tennis ball.

Bocce is a 2 year old owner surrender. He's a well built sturdy reddish wheaten cairn who's good looking but doesn't know it. He knows sit, sit pretty, lay down, rollover and rings a bell when he needs to go potty. He also likes children, people, other dogs and lap time. He loves to get groomed too--no really, he does!! He's known nothing but love and good times.

So why is he in rescue, the inquiring mind would ask? Rescue is for all dogs not just the hard luck cases which we see all too often. Sometimes life changes and choices have to be made no one would have envisioned. Life can throw you a curve ball, well, in this case it's a BOCCE ball!

Please welcome the beautiful boy Bocce!

~A KISS SAVED FOR LATER~

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Do you remember the 'Sealed with A Kiss' kids- Sarut, Bacio, Kisu, Suudella, Fili, and Halik? For those new to Col. Potter, this group was part of a seizure in which six of twelve cairns were considered needing rescue help. The other six were adopted out by the receiving shelter.

Last week CP was contacted again by that same shelter. One of the six adopted out was returned, due to reportedly not getting along well with the resident dogs in the adoptive home. They felt that he had his best chance with cairn rescue, and reached out for help.

SO please give a huge CP welcome to JOCKO, the KISS that was saved for later! He is estimated to be 5 years old, a stunning red wheaten, and a bit scared right now given all the changes in the past week. He is B&Bing and will move to a foster home this weekend.

Please welcome Jethro

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Jethro recently became a Col. Potter boy after his owner contacted us for help. She was going through extremely difficult times and needed him to go somewhere he would be safe and well taken care of. I’m happy to report that Jethro safely arrived at his new foster home yesterday.

Jethro is a very handsome, 7-8 year old, red cairn boy who’s full of life and ready to begin a new adventure.

Welcome to the CP family little one!

THREE MARCH INTO CP

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

When a puppy doesn't sell or find its home by a certain age, its future is precarious to say the least, especially with the current economy.

For three babies, their future was sealed with happiness when they came Marching Into CP! They are siblings born 8/29/10, so are just six months old. They also got a little extra guardian angel to watch over them from being named from our Name a Cairn Program.

It is my pleasure to introduce March Into CP:

Henry C. - Male, red wheaten, described as a talker. He is named in honor of Sheri K's dad. This was a Christmas present for her Dad which will give much love--to dad and a Cairn--and provide interest for a very long time.

Sir Winston - Male, red wheaten, he's playful but a little timid. He is named in memory of Pam M's 14 year old cairn Sir Winston who went to the Rainbow Bridge in 2009.

Inky Pie - Female, red wheaten, typical bossy little girl with her brothers. She named in memory of Suzanne C's mother whose nickname was Pie. The first nephew born could not say Auntie Pie and called her Inky Pie and it stuck. Suzanne's mom died of pancreatic cancer 15 years ago; she is still missed and submitting this brought tears to Suzanne's eyes.

Welcome sweet babies! We're so happy you Marched Into CP!!

Meet Amber, CP's newest jewel

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Meet Amber, a gorgeous 3 year old red wheaten girl. Amber has a little too much “terrier attitude” and her former parents didn’t quite know how to handle it, so they contacted Col. Potter for help. She’s bunking out this week in a temporary foster home, and initial reports describe her as a sweetheart, who gives exuberant kisses and rolls over for tummy rubs. Plus she’s housebroken, playful and gallops around tossing toys, chasing balls and entertaining herself. She’s heading to her foster home next weekend and will be receiving a little attitude adjustment training – along with the all love and nurturing that little cairns need.

Please welcome Amber!

Magda comes to CP!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Magda found her way into the arms of Col. Potter as the result of changes in her owner's circumstances. Magda is a highly experienced pet - she's perfectly house trained, walks on a leash like a dream, and likes nothing better than to cuddle or get her tummy rubbed. Magda is 10 yrs old and is settling in at her foster home. Her mommy wanted her to come to rescue because she hear good things about us and knew that we would find a good home for Magda.

From the reports from her foster mom someone is going to get one special girl!

Rusty's a CP kid, just in the nick of time!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

He's a Col. Potter kid, just in the nick of time! This darling 2 year old true red wheaten boy found himself in a shelter where he could have been adopted out, had he not started coughing! Coughing in some shelters means one thing--the end of the road. Shelters fear the entire facility becoming contaminated, so if the cough doesn't resolve quickly, the dog in in danger of euthanasia.

Luckily, due to the very diligent work of our Rescue Team members scouring the web daily for cairns in shelters, a contact letter reached the shelter asking if this boy needed help. The shelter replied that he did, most certainly. Once we had that information, Intakes moved immediately to arrange pickup. Our local rescue angels pulled him, and he is SAFE as a CP kid.

Initial reports on Rusty Staub: Loves people, loves men, likes petting, ALL potties outside, no marking, good on walks, will stay/stop when guided to do so. Stayed out in the front yard for hours on leash while we raked leaves. Sniffed the air, sniffed the leaves, sniffed the neighbors. Spotted cats, squirrels, other dogs--ears up, nose wiggling--but he didn't move! Just sat and watched.

From all I have heard so far, he is a dream boy.

Welcome Rusty Staub, you won't last long in CP!

Watch out for Gator!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please welcome this handsome little red wheaten boy--Gator. He is 5 years old and was picked up as a stray. The shelter located his owner (via his microchip) but the owner didn’t want him back – said he has health problems and is moving.

Gator is an extremely happy dog and carried on many conversations with the staff at the shelter while there. He has some skin issues and needs to lose a few pounds, but other than that he is very healthy.

Welcome little guy – Col Potter will get you back into top shape and find just the right home for you!

Please welcome Lysander

Written by a CP volunteer

Lysander was picked up as a stray by animal control and brought to a high kill shelter outside of Atlanta, GA. I was sent his information from a shelter volunteer, and I forwarded his info and photos to intakes. I, Naggy Nancy, inquired on his status a bunch, and felt the least I could do was offer to have him come hang out at the barking boys ranch (aka my home).

Maureen, Deb, and Laura, were instrumental in getting him out of there, taking him to the vet, and putting him on a plane to Connecticut. His flight was on my birthday, so Mo volunteered to go to the airport and fetch him for me.

He is a sweetie, full of affection and kisses, and great with dogs, kids and adults. He loves scritches, naturally. Walks well on leash and is easily handled and very tolerant of poking and prodding. He is very playful and spunky and races through the yard with my other young foster girl.

Lysander is not more than 2 years old, and about 15 lbs. So far he demonstrates good house manners. He is attentive to tone of voice and fairly obedient. Welcome to Col. Potter!

Lysander rescued by CP!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Well today surely was a lucky day for Lysander! This smiling boy found himself at a very high kill shelter, with his time up. Thanks to a dedicated shelter volunteer who visits regularly to see if she can find rescues for the urgent ones, Col. Potter was contacted to help. After a couple of false starts trying to get him, we got the shelter OK for today. Deb and her granddaughter drove to bring him into the loving arms of CP.

He is estimated to be under two years old, and sweet as can be. He loved Deb's granddaughter, and smiled for the camera. From all accounts, he will be a wonderful addition to a very lucky family!

He is getting his spa treatment- and will be looking for a loving foster home following that.

Welcome, Lysander!

One more City Slicker joins Col. Potter

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

Providence had to wait a little bit longer to find her way to freedom than some of the other City Slickers. She had the unfortunate luck of being pregnant when the others were released and the breeding facility wouldn't let her go. Her journey was slower and longer, but the end result is the same--FREEDOM in the loving arms of Col. Potter.

She has a pretty brindle coat with lots of dark in her undercoat and will be a beauty when she is groomed. Providence weighs about 15 pounds, is friendly and relaxed.

Please help me Welcome Providence to CP!

Cabot comes to Col. Potter

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

This distinguished looking guy is 6 year old Cabot. He is a mellow fellow and really wants to be with people. He's been around a variety of animals having lived on a farm. He's a little on the quiet side and could lose a pound or two. Cabot is finishing up his spa treatment at a vet clinic and waiting to begin his journey to his very own forever home!

Please welcome Cabot to the Col. Potter Family!

G-L-O-R-I-A

Dictated to a CP Intakes volunteer by Gloria

Usually an Intake person introduces the new Col. Potter kids but I'm going to introduce myself because I want to tell you my own story. My name is Gloria, I'm a petite cairn girl and my 4th birthday was last week!

The next thing I know I was going for a car ride. Yippee--a car ride, I hadn't done that in a long time. I hadn't much fun for a while and I was so excited at the possibility. The car kept going down the road but soon I didn't recognize the scenery. Great - I'm going to some where new, maybe the dog toy store for a birthday present? I hope so!

Soon the car pulled into a driveway but nothing looked familiar. As I got out of the car I heard dogs barking and cats meowing. Could it be? A surprise party for ME? When I went into the building, no one yelled surprise. Something was wrong. This wasn't fun anymore. I was escorted to a pen with some other small dogs. I asked "What is this place?" The old beagle in my pen told me and I was in disbelief. A kill shelter, I'm in a KILL SHELTER!! This was my worst birthday ever. I heard a person say that there was no money to help with my skin problem, no one would want me and I was scheduled to die. I was on death row all because someone didn't take care of me. I was so sad. I curled up in a ball in my bed and hid my face.

The phone rang. I heard the shelter lady talking to someone. Some ladies from Col. Potter wanted to help me. I didn't know what Col. Potter was--good or bad? I hid my face in despair.

Soon a lady from Col. Potter put me in a crate and we went on a car ride. This seemed different so I wagged my tail. Before long I was getting a special bath, boy did that feel good! When all the dirt was washed off, I was a red head! Next I got a trim--all the mats and icky stuff was gone. It gets better--I got a yummy dinner something I hadn't had in a long time. When it was time for bed, I got my very own nightshirt, a soft blanket and a clean crate--all for me! I slept like a baby. I was dreaming of my next birthday because now I'll HAVE a next birthday. You're all invited to my birthday party too and I'll be singing as loud as I can G-L-O-R-I-A!!

Thank you Col. Potter.

xo Gloria

Welcome Barnabus!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Tough times are still the sad reason many good pets are being surrendered. Another family found themselves in that situation and took Barnabus to a local humane society. Being a small town hard hit with recession, adoptions were slow. Barnabus wasn't having any luck finding a home. The shelter didn't know anything about cairn terriers or how a cairn was supposed to act. They weren't sure if Barnabus liked other dogs because he'd bark at them when they walked by his kennel - especially the Rottweiler! To confuse the staff even more, Barnabus would run up to the them, barking and then flop over for a belly rub. He knew how to work the room. They decided Barnabus was a sweet fun guy who needed more exposure to find a new home so they asked Col. Potter for help.

Barnabus is a healthy, handsome 3 year old boy who knows basic commands, loves to play ball, and has a great cairn coat which he loves to have brushed. Barnabus has stepped out of the dark shadows and into the bright sunshine!

Please welcome Barnabus....

Mariah rescued by CP!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Another sad story of a little cairn dumped by her owner at shelter…..As if that’s not bad enough, a gassing shelter! Once Intakes found out she was just about out of time, we sprang into action. Thanks to one of our big-hearted foster moms, little Mariah was swiftly rescued and transported to our vet.

Mariah is a tiny girl at 11 lbs, 4-5 years old and just a little cutie with 1 ear up and 1 ear down. She was, understandably, very scared at the shelter but warmly greeted her rescuer by jumping up looking for treats. Mariah is named after her rescuer’s granddaughter who just celebrated her 16th birthday. Mariah is currently receiving her spa treatment and will be moving to her foster home next weekend.

Please welcome Mariah! Life will only get better for this little cairn.

Rhianna comes under CP's umbrella

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

This cute, no-so-little, cairn girl is now a Col. Potter girl. She's 6 years old, and has had her last litter of puppies - she's now going to be enjoying life as an empty nester!

She has had her spay and spa treatment making her strawberry blonde fur glisten. Rhianna has a few pounds of baby fat to shed but that doesn't slow her down if there's a critter to be chased. She's all terrier and sweet as can be - a great combination.

She will be heading to her foster home soon and is looking forward to a forever home in her future. Please welcome Rhianna, princess-in-the-making!!

Welcome Marion and Mahaska

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please help me welcome two very lucky cairns who joined the Col. Potter family today.

Marion, a beautiful red wheaten, is our new girl. She is named for Francis Marion, a Revolutionary War general.

Mahaska, a sweet black brindle, is our new boy. He is named after Mahaska, a chief of the Ioway tribe.

A big Thank You to two dedicated volunteers who drove through hours of horrible weather to get these two kids to safety.

Welcome Marion and Mahaska!
