Yesterday two Cairns found their freedom thanks to Col. Potter! They've never had a chance to enjoy the things our resident furkids take for granted, but that's all about to change! They will now receive the medical attention they need to address ongoing conditions and they will receive the love and attention to change those scared, wild eyes into soft, loving ones.

As we celebrate this Memorial Day, let's give thanks to all the veterans who gave their lives for this great country and give us our freedom every day. I would also like to thank the volunteers and supporters of Col. Potter who work so hard to support the rescue efforts and make freedomhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif available to these little furkids we all love so much.

In celebration of two have crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge, I am honored to introduce:

Sister: Female, born 5/15/03. Wheaten with crumpled black ears. Her name was donated by Kris B. whose friend loved her cat, Sister, for more than 20 years.




BenBen: Wheaten male, born 4/7/09. BenBen's name was donated by Denise H. in honor of her Benny (CP's Martin) who went to the RB in June, 2010.

WELCOME ANYA, A NEW LITTLE GIRL, TO THE CP FAMILY!!!

All of us that volunteer and support Col. Potter have a personal story, a history. Some of us have lived what could be considered a privileged life, while others of us have had to fight and work hard for everything we've ever gotten. The same can be said for the Cairns that find their way to the CP family. The important thing about Col. Potter is it doesn't matter if you're a human or a Cairn, if you've come from privilege or hardship, we open our arms to all to become a part of the CP family.

This little girl has come from hardship, but that has all changed for her now. She is sleeping in a warm building on a soft blanket tonight and will enjoy probably her first soothing bath to get the dirt and filth off her body. She doesn't know it yet, but she has gone from hardship to privilege.

Anya is a red wheaten female, estimated at 4-5 years old. Her name comes from our Name a Cairn Program, donated by Bonnie W-C in memory of her mother who died too young, was a redhead, loved her kids, loved animals and always had a flock of people around her. It's nice to know CP's Anya has such a special Guardian Angel watching over her.

With the holidays right around the corner, the Name a Cairn Program is a wonderful gift idea for that hard to buy for person on your shopping list. You know, the one that has everything and needs or wants nothing. What a wonderful, unique and caring gift that truly gives the gift of life to a little Cairn like Anya.

Pappy has arrived!

Most of the commercial breeding males that make their way to freedom have literally been "Pappy" to hundreds of puppies. Last week approximately 100 breeder dogs of different breeds were released by owners. This is how we got our little Cypress. At the last second, an almost 6 year old male was added to the list and we scrambled to make arrangements to get him picked up to make sure he wasn't left behind.

I'm quite certain this little guy has been "Pappy" to many a puppy! I've also said that there are different levels of commercial breeders, rating them on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best. While I don't know wher this little one came from personally, it must be one on the higher end of the scale. He came in relatively clean and with a GREAT personality!! My thanks to Gina for making the trip to get him and the pictures.

So, why is this one for the men of CP? This commercial breeding facility daddy is being named in honor of all the dear husbands, Dads and Pops that gave up their Father's Day weekend to attend our CRAP.

A large group of furkids from many different commercial breeding facilities made their way to freedom this week including an adorable little, 8 month old black brindle female Cairn that is now a member of the CP family. My thanks to Stacey for making the drive yesterday to pick her up and get her settled in at the vet.

Her name comes from the Name a Mill Cairn Program and a special group of people in Canada who wrote:

In January of this year we decided to put spare coins aside to participate in the Name a Mill Cairn Program, it is amazing how quickly these coins add up. We also decided that since we all live on Vancouver Island, we would all choose a name that was a place on the Island, and each time we saved $100 a name would be drawn to name our Mill Cairn.

So we of the Vancouver Island Group would like to welcome our first Cairn: "Cypress" to the Col. Potter Family.

Ecstasy and agony--meet new girl BeBe

Last Saturday I received an urgent message from one of our rescue partners. A commercial breeding facility was retiring some dogs and the rescue that was supposed to take all the dogs left some behind including two little Cairn girls -- could Col. Potter help? After hurriedly scrambling around for boarding over 4th of July and talking to our volunteers, we made arrangements to pick them up on Monday. That fell through so we tried again for Tuesday. That fell through as well.

Yesterday I received word that one of the little girls had been very sick since they picked her up. She was having seizures and even though they had started her on phenobarbitol it wasn't helping and yesterday she was having severe seizures. The vet this rescue works with diagnosed her as having water on the brain and had probably had it for some time. Her diagnosis was not good and they helped her to the Rainbow Bridge yesterday. She was estimated to be 9 years old. The agony that this little one never got to feel the love of Col. Potter.

Today, the other little girl finally made it into the loving arms of Col. Potter thanks to volunteer Ken and photos thanks to Deborah. She is estimated to be 5 years old and everyone that has come in contact with her says the same thing -- she is just the sweetest little girl!!

BeBe is named through the Name a Mill Cairn program in memory of a good friend of Amy and Brian's who lost his battle earlier this year. Please help me welcome this adorable little girl.

This intake is very bittersweet. There is the ecstasy of knowing BeBe is now receiving the care she needs in the loving arms of Col. Potter, but also the agony of knowing the other little girl never knew good care or love. Even though she wasn't officially a CP furkid, please light a candle for the little girl who only knew agony her whole life.

Welcome Tazzer to the CP family!

Please welcome Tazzer to Col. Potter! Tazzer is a beautiful brindle male, estimated to be between 1-2 years of age. His name was donated as part of the Name a Mill Cairn program. Tazzer is named to honor the memory of a beloved cairn who went to the Rainbow Bridge earlier this year.

Tazzer came to us from a commercial breeding facility and is looking forward to learning all about being a wonderful family companion at his foster home before moving on to his forever family.

A Special Boy and Girl Remembered by CP

All the furkids that come into CP are special and have their own story, their own history and looking to make new history thanks to Col. Potter. Some of them tug at our heart strings because of where they came from, or a tragic death where they have nowhere else to now go. But then there are those that carry on a special name in memory of those that have passed. Such is the case with a little girl and boy that made their way to freedom from a commercial breeding facility we work with on a regular basis.

Myra: Female, wheaten, born 6/27/08 - named in memory of Susan M's beloved girl who was the inspiration for Susan to get into rescue.



Dreyfus: Male, black brindle, born 5/29/08 - named in memory of Danielle and George Rackstraw's beloved Dreyfus who we have all heard many stories about (Danielle is the founder of Col. Potter).



Helping cairns from breeding facilities find their way into Col. Potter is made possible by donations to the Name a Mill Cairn program. I know how special these two little furkids will be to Susan and Danielle and George as they watch them progress through CP and ultimately to a forever home. Please keep the Name a Mill Cairn program in mind for graduation gifts and Father's Day. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving.

Poppy Girl joins CP!

Poppy Girl is very special, her name was donated by Fay C. in memory of her mother's much loved little girl who died at 13 from cancer. Fay made the donation to CP through our wonderful Name A Mill Cairn program.

Poppy Girl is a gorgeous 6 year old black brindle cairn, currently receiving her spa treatment. She will be heading to her foster home this weekend.

TWO MORE FURKIDS JOIN THE CP FAMILY!

Last week they were living in a commercial breeding facility... this week they are part of the Col. Potter family!

One of the really special programs CP has is the Name a Mill Cairn Program. This gives you an opportunity to name a rescued cairn who has spent their life knowing little other than a cage and then watch them blossom and bloom into a little Cairn that we all love so much. Some people donate in memory of a loved one who passed, some people donate in honor of a special occasion. No matter what the reason, it's a wonderful way to help the Cairns and remember or honor someone.

These two furkids are both named with donated names and each has a special story.

Salvan

Salvan - Female, born 2/5/06 - we all remember little Sally, the Cairn who had won her freedom from a breeding facility and was on her way to her forever home when she got loose during transport. Even though Sally wasn't a CP furkid, several CP members searched the area where Sally had been lost. Unfortunately, weeks later Sally's body was found. Her forever family was so grateful for the help of CP, they donated to not only remember Sally and so that she may live on in another Cairn, but also to honor those volunteers who searched to find her.

Blaiser

Blaiser - Male, born 8/30/02 - Blaiser was the nickname of a special man who lost his battle with cancer. Molly, a Cairn with medical and temperament issues, was daddy's little girl, even when she almost bit his ear off while trying to remove a sticker from her paw. The last thing Blaiser said before he died was "Don't forget that I want to be buried with Molly".

Please help me welcome Salvan and Blaiser. I just know that Sally, Blaiser and Molly are all smiling down on them.

3 more come In Out of the Cold

They were rescued last week, and spent their first night warm, dry and well fed. All three are severely underweight. They are estimated to be between 3 and 5 years old. Despite their hard life, they are friendly and not too scared. They are currently getting their spa treatments, and some tender loving care.

Welcome Barbara Mae!

This past Saturday a little girl hitched a ride to freedom and ended up in the loving arms of Col. Potter.

Her name is Barbara Mae, a donated name in memory of Susan's beloved aunt. She is currently being boarded and vetted. The vet staff reports she is just adorable, friendly, seeks attention, wags her tail, and even snuggles. Needless to say the entire staff at the vet has fallen in love with Barbara Mae!

CP OPENS IT'S ARMS TO THE RAINBOW BRIDGE ANGELS

I'm going to give you all a tissue alert before you read any farther, so go get a tissue ... The magic of Col. Potter is that we all feel so deeply for the little furkids that we so desperately try to help. In many ways, Col. Potter is like family because we have this common bond. A common bond that many of our own family and friends can't quite wrap their arms around, but the Col. Potter family can. We all celebrate together ... and we all grieve together.

In our hearts there is something called the Rainbow Bridge where our beloved furkids go. There they are once again young, healthy and surrounded by love and care waiting until the day that we can once again join them. Each one that leaves us takes a little piece of our heart with them and we never forget them.

Col. Potter has a wonderful program to help puppymill kids and honor the memory of someone special - human or animal. This is a living tribute that a PM Cairn carries forth. This program has enabled CP to help countless PM kids by providing funding earmarked specifically for PM kids. The donated names are used exclusively for PM kids. I am the fortunate one that gets to work with the donors and I can tell you that each and every donation truly touches me.

Yesterday, seven (7) little Cairns made their way to freedom from a puppymill. They are all older, but now thanks to CP and in part, the donations to the Name a PM Kid program they have a very bright future! Please allow me to introduce the Rainbow Bridge Angels:

One final thought, Saturday night was the Memorial for Skye at Oz Project. How great is it that they remember the other six that are part of the Rainbow Bridge Angels along with Skye ... I know I will be looking towards the heavens tonight hoping to catch a glimpse of a few bright and shining stars. Maybe it was fate, or maybe there are far greater powers at work to have made this happen at the same time ... furkids they are named in honor and memory of, but I know each one of them has a very special Guardian Angel watching down over them. They are a living tribute to some wonderful and much loved furbabies. STONEWALL COMES TO CP!

Last week I was contacted by a miller in Missouri that we have received quite a few Cairns from over the years. She had two Cairns, a male she was done breeding and a younger female that had skin problems that she wanted to release to rescue. I made all of the arrangements to get them picked up and the reservations for the boarding and vetting. BUT, something kept telling me she was waffling on the female and I just had a feeling she would back out of releasing her. Saturday morning came, and about an hour before they were to be picked up, sure enough, she backed out of releasing the female saying she had given her a bath and her skin looked so much better. I politely told her how happy I was to hear that and that whenever she was ready to release her or any other Cairns, she knew where I was and we would be happy to help. And so it goes "Dancing with the Devil" ...

While the little female didn't make it out this time, the male did! Please help me welcome Stonewall. The picture she originally sent me showed a very handsome black brindle boy with a gorgeous coat. What we picked up was a very handsome black brindle boy with a shaved coat ... The miller's answer to cleaning a dog up ... shave them down. Stonewall will be turning 7 years old on July 26.

Stonewall is a donated name at the request of Carolynne McComb as a birthday gift from her boss. Just a reminder this SUNDAY IS FATHER'S DAY ... what better gift for the dad that has everything but loves dogs than to click this link to donate to name a Puppy Mill Kid after dad or something he loves; or what a wonderful way to remember your dad who is no longer with you. YO CP! VINNY'S HERE!

This past weekend, Col. Potter attended an auction that had one male Cairn listed, no age, just one male Cairn. This is a "bad" auction house and usually the sellers who frequent this sale have older, health issue dogs they are unloading. Imagine our surprise when a bouncing 3 month old baby was brought out as the one male Cairn. Vinny joined the CP family in all his puppy glory! He's been at the H's for less than 24 hours, but K. has already shared two stories I have to share with you.


In the photo is a shot of Vinny with his very adorable belly band on. K. tells me that after she put the bellyband on Vinny, he wasn't quite sure what to make of it. He didn't know how to walk or move, then slowly got the hang of it until he came to the bed where he proceeded to take giant strides while trying to get in because of having the bellyband on. Then, being a puppy, BUT a Cairn puppy, he decided to hump his bed!!



In the morning, Vinny was out in the backyard and heard the neighbor's dog so went trotting over to the fence to investigate ... again Cairn puppy. The only thing he didn't figure on was trying to walk on water! Barney had filled the swimming pool for the resident furkids and that was directly in Vinny's path to the fence, so he just walked right on over the edge of the pool ... until he hit the water and sank up to his neck. Good thing K. was there to yank him out! Yes, he is a Cairn puppy!!


Vinny is named in memory of a beloved furkid of friends of Diane P. through our Name a Mill Kid Program. I'm sure that CP's Vinny is going to need all of the guidance from above that he can get! Now, before you all try offering to foster Vinny, the MM Team is looking for a Foster-to-Adopt home for him and he will be staying with them until then. Yo, help me welcome Vinny to the CP family!

People always hope for the best, even in the face of adversity. I think puppy mill kids do, too. CP's newest additions spent their days in an Amish mill, facing adversity every minute. They hoped for better, for freedom, for love. They finally are getting those better days. They are now clean, dry, well fed and watered. They are getting loving, gentle attention. Welcome the Easter Eggs!

Easter eggs are specially decorated eggs given to celebrate the Easter holiday or springtime. The egg was a symbol of the rebirth of the earth in Pagan celebrations of spring and was later adopted by early Christians.

Yesterday was the lucky day for three kids looking for their chance at rebirth. Looking for a soft place to lay their heads, for a friend to cozy up with for their naps. They are hoping to find out about living in a home, wrestling and playing, and being a constant companion to their family members. They came from a breeding situation, and they are done with that life forever. In their rebirth, the only thing asked of them is to love and be loved.

These three are doubly lucky. They are part of the "Name a Puppy Mill Kid Program", where you can donate to name a PM kid in memory or honor of someone, or just because. All three of these cairns will hold a very special place in the hearts of those who through their donation chose their new Col. Potter names.

Delight - Delight was named in memory of Shaggy, so named because one of the descriptions of a Cairn Terrier was "short Shaggy Scottish terrier" and she was a delight to have. Name donated by Pam & Bill E.



Saiorse - Saiorse - pronounced Seersha - was named in Honor of Aunt Fran. Saiorse is Irish Gaelic meaning Freedom. Name donated by JoAnn & Jim M.



Lord Randall Taylor - Randy was named for our rescue dog that was shown by a shelter at a local Lord and Taylor. Name donated by Carolyn & Carmen C.



These three kids are all estimated to be between four and six years old. They are in the loving arms of Col Potter now, ready for their new beginning.

Welcome a New Girl to CP!

One life ends ... and another one begins. One soul is no longer free to walk the earth ... while a different one gains her freedom. Such is the cycle of life. It always comes around full circle. For those whose life ends, they are not forgotten, but remembered warmly and with much joy celebrating their life and what they meant to all they touched.

I don't know about you, but I have a very special spot in my heart for the puppy mill kids. Those that have literally survived the worst conditions one could imagine. Never knowing love, comfort, care even simple basic things like food and water, much less shelter. These are the same furkids that show such joy when reaching freedom and getting that chance to start life anew as they learn all there is to know and enjoy in this new life called freedom.

Yesterday another one of our rescue angels attended an auction in Ohio. We had high hopes of rescuing several Cairns, but it was not to be. This auction was heavily attended as we found out there was a kennel in Minnesota that was being shutdown and going out of business and they had shipped most of their breeding stock to Ohio to this auction. The millers in Ohio were anxious to get fresh breeding lines in their stock and all the dogs were going very high and out of rescue price ranges. But our rescue angel hung in there until the Cairns came up very near the end of the auction. One by one the Cairns were sold to millers at very high prices. But, then a Cairn was put up for auction. She was a little bit larger than the others and was not from the miller in Minnesota. SOLD announced the auctioneer and our rescue angel had one little Cairn girl safely in the loving arms of CP!

This little Cairn's life had just begun anew and she would be able to enjoy freedom, love and caring for the rest of her life thanks to our rescue angel.

Someone very special and very close to someone I care about a great deal passed away a few weeks ago. She was someone who had never had children of her own and lived alone up until two weeks before her death when she no longer could care for herself. During the past few years, her niece had assumed a large portion of her care, visiting weekly, making sure her medications were set out in her weekly pill containers, taking her shopping, getting her hair done, taking her to family events, basically being the daughter that she never had. She had even told her niece that she considered her to be hers. Now she will probably kill me for telling everyone all of this, as she is a private person but I wanted to do something special for Maureen H. and her Aunt Fran and couldn't think of a better way than using the Name a PM Kid Program.

Please help me welcome Fran to the loving arms of CP! Maureen, I know your Aunt Fran is smiling down on you and this little girl today ... BIG HUGS my friend ...

ALERT! CP Infested With Two Bugs!

Now that I have your attention ... don't panic ... you won't need insect repellent and your computers don't have a new virus! The two bugs are new members of the family!

These two made their way to safety and freedom from an auction in Missouri Saturday. Normally, those that attend the auction get the honor to name the furkids they helped to get to freedom, but yesterday was different. When I received the phone call that we had gotten a "couple" - a male and a female - I had a surprise up my sleeve, or should I say a bug or two up my sleeve. You all know about the Name a PM Kid Program where you can donate to name a PM kid in memory or honor of someone, or just because. Well, I had a "couple" of bug names just waiting for the right time!

Please help me welcome our Bug Couple:

Katydid: F, DOB 1/5/06, wheaten with tipped ears - name donated by Jerusha H. - daughter of Kathy H. for Kathy's birthday. Kathy and Jerusha have been scheming for a bug themed group for some time.



Beetle: M, DOB 1/27/06, wheaten - name donated by a CP member who wishes to remain anonymous but wanted to honor and say Thank You for what Kathy and Barney H. do to help the furkids. I had told this person about Jerusha's gift and they decided to honor Barney with his own "bug" name.



These two are just "cute as two bugs in a rug" just like the two special people they are named in honor of. My thanks to Kathy and Barney H. for making the trip to the auction on short notice, sending in the pictures and bathing and grooming our little bugs before taking them to the vet. Also, my thanks to Jerusha and our anonymous donor for their generosity and helping to make freedom a possibility for Katydid and Beetle! Welcome Bug Couple ... we won't be swatting you away (sorry just couldn't resist)!

Four More Furkids Thank You for Your Support!

Yesterday four more little Cairns found their way to freedom in the loving arms of Col. Potter. These kids were helped in part by the donations of four people to the Name a PM Kid program. The funds from this program go directly to help with the expenses incurred in vetting PM kids. The Name a PM Kid program along with donations specifying their usage for PM kids are so important in our efforts to help as many puppy mill Cairns as possible. These furkids have spent their lives living in small, filthy cages, many outside, exposed to all the weather elements from extreme cold to sweltering heat. They have had no vetting, poor quality food, little exercise and no love or comfort in their lives. Thanks to those who donated to the Name a PM Kid program, that has just changed for these four Cairns!

I'm sure you will all notice the three females all have the same birth date. Yes, they are all sisters and the daughters of CP's Angel Seraphim who made the journey to freedom last month. Now some of her daughters have made the same journey.

My personal THANKS to Marlene T. for meeting the transport bringing these four to freedom and for the pictures. I would also like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Heather, Amy, Kim and Debra for supporting the Name a PM Kid program. Please keep this wonderful program in mind as we approach the upcoming holidays and events this spring including Easter, Mother's Day, graduations, etc. The gift of helping a living, breathing Cairn means so much more than candy or flowers ... just look at these faces!

"Thanks for Having a Heart Kids" Get a Chance at FREEDOM!

Three little Cairns made their way out of a life in a puppy mill and into the loving arms of Col. Potter on Saturday. This would not have been possible without the generous donations that help support the work CP does in rescuing Cairns from the puppy mills. One very important program that supports our puppy mill efforts is our Name a PM Kid Program. As has been discussed many times, the vetting required for Cairns that come to us directly from a mill is costly and generally far exceeds the adoption donation. But these little furkids that have lived their entire lives in small, cramped, filthy cages with little food, water or shelter and withstood the abuse and torture from the humans they come in contact with, so deserve this chance at freedom and a happily ever after.

All three of these Cairns now proudly carry a Donated Name. Please help me welcome the "Thanks for Having a Heart Kids":

Schmaltz: F, DOB 5/7/05, cream - donated by Pat H. as a tribute to her mother and aunts with a nickname they used for each other.

Cheryl: F, DOB 4/24/05, wheaten - donated by Emily and Michael I. in honor of their Penny/Persephone's gotcha day and in memory of Emily's mother who passed away on December 30, 2007. Her mom was one of their references when they adopted Penny and they know she would have loved their little girl.

JakeE: M, DOB 3/2/05, wheaten - donated by Monica & Don K. in loving memory of Monica's sister's Jake who went to the Rainbow Bridge last fall.
