BLING IS A HEALTHY BOY! CHECK OUT SOME NEW PICTURES!

Written by Ling and Bling's foster Mom

I came upon this scene when I went in to take Ling out to potty. I just had to get my camera and take some quick pictures. This boy is flaunting himself at an awfully young age! Bling also was singing loudly while nursing tonight. I thought he was stuck or something with all the noise he was making. He's a talker!

WILL YOU BE ONE OF COTTON'S GUARDIAN ANGELS?

Written by Cotton's foster Mom

Good morning, everyone. I'm asking for your prayers today for my foster Cotton, one of the Fabrics To Keep You Warm kids. Cotton has some MAJOR medical issues going on right now. When rescued, Cotton underwent extensive surgery to repair two inguinal hernias as well as being spayed. According to her initial vetting report, Cotton's uterus was attached to scar tissue throughout her abdomen. It appears the surgery to repair the hernias has failed, and Cotton is now facing additional surgery to see if the damage can be repaired. She has a huge hernia (or sack) hanging from the right side of her belly and it appears her bladder is inside the hernia (sack). There is also an area above that which appears hard and swollen. It is not clear whether it is fatty tissue or some internal organ trying to pop through. Only surgery will tell and that surgery is scheduled for this morning.

This little wheaten girl with dark ears deserves to live and find a forever home to love and protect her. She's amazing. She's sweet, gentle, playful and although she's small in stature, she's big in heart. You would never know by looking at her and watching her trot in the backyard with her tail held high that she is probably experiencing tremendous discomfort and/or pain.

Cotton is looking for Guardian Angels. If you can help, she would appreciate it. Please help her overcome her medical issues and put her on the road to recovery. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. Please click here to become one of her guardian angels. Thank you for your compassion and generosity.

IT’S A CAIRNTASTIC CHRISTMAS PRESENT !!!

Written by a CP Media Volunteer

Do you have someone on your Christmas list that you give a calendar to every year? In my family, I have a sister who gets a horse calendar, I usually get a Van Gogh calendar and the kids have their favorites as well. We all want to pass on and celebrate our shared values with our friends and family. What better way to do this then to purchase and give a Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network 2010 Faces of Rescue calendar.

Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network is proud to announce our 10th annual Cairn Terrier rescue calendar. This calendar is dedicated to our rescue dogs, to those who foster, to those who have adopted, and to our many volunteers and supporters.

I adopted my first Col. Potter cairn in 2005 so the 2006 calendar was the first one that I bought. It’s a beautiful calendar and it contains pictures of all of the dogs rescued and adopted the previous year so if you were lucky enough to foster or adopt a cairn from Col. Potter last year, their picture will be in it! In 2008, we adopted two Col. Potter cairns so both of these girls were “calendar girls” last year and in 2009, we have fostered two Col. Potter cairns and adopted one and they are all in the 2010 calendar. I have given one to my vet and one to my groomer and plan to give one to my sister and to my friends who are dog lovers.

The cost is the same or less than buying a calendar from a well known chain of bookstores or online. It is only $15.00 which includes postage and if you buy two, you get a
cairn car decal for free. If you buy five, you get six for the price of five (or a FREE one!) $7.00 from each calendar goes DIRECTLY to the rescue and rehabilitation of our cairns.

Our Faces of Rescue Calendar includes:

Wonderful dog poems.

Theme pages that will make you smile or reflect

A photograph of every rescue dog that has been in our system from the close of our 2009 calendar on 09/30/2009. This includes:

All of our fosters still under our wings and not adopted as of the 2009 close off date of 09/15/09

All the dogs who have been adopted this year with their Col. Potter given name, the state to which they were adopted and their current name if their name was changed and we have received this information.

There are pictures of well over 500 Cairns in this calendar. That outdoes any other Cairn calendar anywhere.

Our Col. Potter Angels who crossed to the Rainbow Bridge while under our wings.

Please click
here to place your order and pass on your love for cairns and cairn rescue to the ones that you love.

Thank you to everyone for your prayers and assistance in bringing Daley home.

A Goddess Comes to CP--Welcome Hecate!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

Hecate

I don't think there is one of us that would dispute that becoming a Col. Potter kid is like becoming a deity compared with where some have come from. Their stories can be compared with something straight out of mythology. Many have to hope that those that keep them imprisoned will one day magically step aside and they can then leave the ghosts of a life past behind them.

Hecate was a Greco-Roman goddess associated with magic, witches and ghosts. She was known to assist with childbirth, nurturing the young and caring for dogs.

CP's little Hecate has had a life that could well fit into the above description. But, that is all behind her and all she has to do now is become a Cairn Goddess! Please help me welcome Hecate, Cairn Goddess!

It's Trick or Treaters for Col. Potter!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

Halloween is deep and rich in myths, lore and the unknown. It dates back hundreds of years covering cults, witchcraft, rising from the dead, sacrificial ceremonies and more. Today, Halloween is pretty tame in comparison and is more a holiday of costume and merriment. Little Trick or Treaters arrive at your door dressed as today's superhero or princess with a brightly decorated bag to collect their treats. The tricks are all pretty much planned and staged at community events where everyone is then treated.

This past Saturday, 6 cairns were welcomed into rescue by Col. Potter.

Please get ready to open your doors to the Trick or Treaters:

Demon: Male, DOB 2/22/09, wheaten

Werewolf: Male, DOB 2/22/09, wheaten

Witch: Female, DOB 8/20/04, wheaten

Mummy: Female, DOB 7/27/06, black brindle

Ghost: Female, DOB 9/8/06, black brindle

Goblin: Female, DOB 10/20/04, black brindle

We almost weren't able to get any of these furkids because of the lack of foster homes. Some of our foster homes are working overtime and taking multiple fosters just so we can help as many as possible. We have already had to turn away cairns in need of rescue because we don't have space. PLEASE CONSIDER BECOMING A FOSTER HOME!!!! and click here. It will be a real TREAT for you!

It truly was a Happy Halloween and it will be a happily ever after for these Trick or Treaters!!

LOST CAIRN - ARLINGTON,TEXAS CAN YOU HELP SEARCH? - NOW FOUND!

Daley is a 10 y/o wheaten (tan) shaggy dog with short legs and is mostly blind and mostly deaf. She got out last night through an open garage door and unfortunately she wasn't wearing a collar or tags. Her collar was off until she could get it washed and back on her so Kim's been searching all night. She put up signs first thing this morning then went off to the shelter to see if she had been taken there. As of this time, she has not been found.

Welcome Bodega to Col. Potter!

Written by a CP volunteer

It was a very good morning for Bodega in Santa Rosa, CA. It was a discovered that a Cairn mix with skin issues was languishing in a shelter and Col. Potter volunteer coordinators let me know that I could help by providing the first ride out of town and on to his new life. I picked him up without any problems at all. His obvious skin problems could demoralize any pooch but he was both nervous and enthusiastic about what was going on and his energy level was that of a perfectly healthy dog. He has a nice sharp bark but wasn't overbearing with it and once in the crate he whined a little with a bit of skepticism but then did a few circles and lay down for most of the trip.

He's very alert and is going to make someone a great friend once he gets his coat back and finds his forever home.

His skin is so bad that it may be better that the photos I took of him in the shelter office aren't that clear.

Thanks to the volunteers who met me halfway and who provided a soft, red plaid blanket to go with Bodega's new red collar and itchy skin and who sent Bodega to a vet to start his recovery.

One more of the many successes that Col Potter can lay claim to this past weekend. Go Bodega!

Written by Bert's foster Mom

Dere Fambly,

Yesterday mama took me to the vet for a check-up. Anna GUESS what da vet sed. I'm all bedder! No kennel cough! Izn't dat great! Da best ting about getting bedder iz dat mama promised me I could meet da kids in dis house when I got bedder. So after we got home, me anna Stewart anna mama anna Alice went in da backyard and pwayed and pwayed! We ran togevver, and took turns peeing onna stuff, and barking togevver anna chasing squirrels. Den Kitten came out and pwayed wif us too. She's pretty - very pretty! Sometimes she yelled at me because I sniffed her girlie parts too much, but that's ok. When she did, I just do something else instead.

Den I was pretty pooped because I habn't been running much latley, so I rested some. Dis morning I met Cider and Maggie, too. Maggie worked on teaching me my manners. She was really good at yellin at me, but I could tell she kinda like me, too! And Oh My Goodness! Cider is one sexy lady! It was love at first sight for bofe of us! We ran and played and mouth wrestled until I was wore out!De only liddle girl dat didn't like me was Chopin. She was afraid of me! I tried to play with her, but she ran away. I thought we were playing chase, so I ran too, but that jes made her more scared. I jes wanted to make friends! Mama sez maybe it's because I'm so big or maybe because I talk too much. We're gonna haf to work on dat. She's berry pretty!

Mama said I did very well meeeting da kids. I play happily wif odder dogs and I'm such a sweet, happy boy! Anna when dey tell me to back off or get out ob dere faces, I am berry good at leaving dem alone .Oh, anna did I tell you about da neighbors? Dere's a couple of boys - wire fox terrier and schnauser, anna great big red girl dog named Cammie. Cammie and Stewart gibs kisses to each odder frough da fence. We hab lots ob fun when dey come out. (Sometimes Kitten calls dem until dey come out, but don't tell mama.) When dey come out we all run up and down da fence and bark and wag at dem. Kitten showed me how to do it. It's really fun! And noisy! hehe!by da way........Mama sez she apallogizes fur not gettin pictures. She wuz so buzy watchin us kids play, she furgot da camera. We played outside lots today anna dere wasn't any problems. So mama sez I'm jes about ready to be 'dopted! Written by Joie's foster Mom

We made our first video of Joie tonight. I thought you'd like to see how she was doing. She's got her new blankie from Auntie Carol with her and she's just had her bath, so she's all cleaned up.

Note the size of her belly (it's growing!). It won't be long until she has her puppies!

It's The Dawn of a New Day at Col. Potter - let's welcome 4 more cairns and two of them are pregnant!!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

In some respects, it's the dawn of a new day for every single little Cairn that makes their way into CP ... it's a new start regardless if they came via an owner surrender, shelter surrender or breeder facility. Each case as they are received by the Intakes Team is assigned to an Intakes Coordinator who makes contact, gathers information, obtains pictures and checks for vet information. Once approved for intake, the coordinator then makes the arrangements for pick-up, vetting and boarding if needed and starts thinking about foster homes and transport. The majority of intakes follow routine procedures and timing. HOWEVER, every once in awhile a twist gets thrown in and sometimes a REALLY BIG TWIST.

We had been contacted by a shelter in Missouri that we have assisted in the past. They were getting in some Cairns and needed rescue assistance with them. An intakes volunteer was assigned this case. She made contact, got as much information as the shelter had and requested pictures when the Cairns arrived. The volunteer arranged a pick-up for the Cairns, boarding and vetting to all take place first thing this morning. Pretty routine, right? WRONG! Friday afternoon she received a phone call from the shelter around 3:30 PM CT. The shelter vet was there checking over the dogs prior to release and announced TWO of the females are PREGNANT - one due at any time and the other in approximately one week!!!!

I'm not going to go through the rest of this story in detail, BUT THANKS TO THE ABOVE AND BEYOND BEHIND THE SCENES WORK OF MANY CP VOLUNTEERS, BOTH OF THESE PREGNANT GIRLS ARE IN THEIR FOSTER HOMES THIS EVENING AND CAN BE PREPARED TO WHELP THEIR LAST LITTERS IN SAFETY AND COMFORT!!!! In less than 3 hours time, we had two confirmed foster homes for the pregnant girls, rearranged pick-up from the shelter, added additional transport volunteers to help out along the route, coordinated changes with the vet, had crates, ID tags and supplies along with towels and blankets just in case, a network communication established and all our fingers and toes crossed these two girls would hold off birthing puppies until they reached their foster homes! I must THANK the key players who made this all possible: all of those that made themselves available at the last minute to help with transport, and 2 wonderful volunteers for agreeing to foster the pregnant moms and whelp puppies and last, but certainly not least, the original intakes volunteer for pulling this all together and making it happen!

And now I would like to introduce the "current" Dawn of a New Day Kids who will be increasing soon. Their names all mean dawn in the language indicated.

Zora: Female, estimated 3-5 years old, due to whelp in about a week - Slavic language

Ling: Female, estimated 3 years old, due to whelp at any moment - Chinese language

Akeno: Male, estimated 5-7 years old - Japanese language

Oditi: Female, estimated 5 years old - Indian language

Please help me say a BIG THANK YOU to the CP Volunteers who made this all possible. It really was the dawn of a new day today for these four little Cairns and I have a feeling there will be a couple more new days dawning in the not to distant future. Please help me welcome today's Dawn of a New Day to CP!!!

Watch the new video of Stinger's puppies learning to play!

Written by Stinger and her puppies' foster mom

Shirley and Fizz:

We've been having fun with the puppies. They are really starting to show Cairn spunk in play. They understand the squeaky sound of the gate to the living room means that we'll be at the den door shortly, and they come running to the ex pen gate with tails wagging. I took a couple of shots of them greeting us, and then after a fun play session while mom Stinger was outside to potty, we returned with her to find everyone had eaten and crashed. There were puppies sacked out all over the ex pen! Here are a few pictures we took of the fun.

Slush, one tired puppy:

Swizzle and Shirley Temple napping after play:

Fizz, too full to move:

Somebody has taken my cute, cuddly, snuggly little puppies and turned them into debil dogs! It's amazing how they change between four and five weeks old! They really mature in a burst - they'll come to the ex pen gate when they hear you coming, wagging their tails. Their motor sensories are much improved - they lunge and run, but they still aren't the best at judging distances and do quite a bit of nose/head butting when they're playing with each other and lunge at each other. They're regular - food goes in, poop comes out. We've moved the papers to where they seem to be going to do their business.

They know how to end play when they're tired and want to be left alone - I watched Swizzle being pounced on by Slush as he was settling in for a nap - he got rolled over, and Slush didn't want to let him up, so Swizzle bit his ear! They now WANT our attention, not just us picking them up and cuddling them. And the divided ex pen idea was good for about 3 days - Shirley Temple was the first to figure out how to step up on the bolster of the bed for a "leg up" to where she could climb the rest of the way onto the box. Then she took a nosedive off, so we eliminated the box as foster daddy couldn't stand to see her get hurt with her ungraceful method of getting down. To give Stinger some space of her own, we put a cream crate bottom inside a green crate bottom backwards, and she can jump in to finish her meals or take a nap without the puppies being able to get to her. We've got bed pads down so they've got something to get some traction on rather than the slick lineoleum flooring, but we now find them all misplaced, being used as tug toys.

Here's the video where Barney sat in the pen with them and became a human chew toy . I'd guess they've got half or more of their teeth.

9 Dogs are going to Forever homes this weekend -Thank you Col. Potter Volunteers!

Written by CP's Director of Foster Homes

In looking over my "paperwork" last night, I realized that we had 9 dogs going to their forever homes this weekend and how wonderful this is that these guys were given a second chance at life because of all of you, from the intakes team who work hard getting them into the Col. Potter system, to the transports team who spend hours getting the dogs to their foster homes all over the country, to the wonderful foster homes who take them in and show them love, guidance, heal their bodies and their souls, to the communications team and home safety visit teams who are working behind the scenes to make sure that the forever homes meet our standards, to the matchmakers who put so much of their time into finding just the right home for each of them and the contracts team who work hard making sure that the contracts are accurate and timely.

We cannot forgot that after they are adopted, the post adoption team then kicks in and their job is start starting.

What a great organization. Because of all of you, 9 little dogs will be starting a whole new life and will know that they are loved and that love first started with all of you.

Thank you, each and every one of you for caring, for putting in the extra hour, for opening your home up to a strange dog, for spending your weekends working for Col. Potter. I personally love and appreciate every single one of you.

If you would like to become a volunteer to help rescue cairns, there are many opportunities available for you. Please click here.
