Tarquin Gets Fitted for a New Coat at Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Tarquin, a sweet approximately 5 year old Wheaten Male

Please welcome our newest Col. Potter boy – Tarquin!   His name was donated through our Name a Rescue Cairn Program by the Board of Directors in honor/memory of CP friends Lee and Scott Juslin's Wheaten Scottie boy who passed March 2014 after a valiant fight against cancer.

Our little Tarquin was picked up as a stray by a very busy animal control shelter.  They contacted Col. Potter to see if we could take him.  Fortunately we could!   He’s estimated to be 5 years old and weighs 19 pounds.  While roaming the streets, he picked up a few fleas which caused severe itching due to an allergic reaction.  He scratched or chewed off much of the fur on his back end and developed a skin infection.  The shelter got rid of the fleas and the vet started him on antibiotics.  With the loving care in his Foster Home, we expect to see his lovely red wheaten coat fully covering his body someday soon.

Tarquin is recovering from a severe allergic reaction to fleas and will have his beautiful coat back soon!

Welcome Tarquin!

Tabasco does the Hot Fox Trot to Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Tabasco, a saucy little 1 year old Wheaten Male
¡Hola a Todos!

Let’s all give a hearty CP welcome to a saucy new dude who has just joined our Col. Potter family - Meet “Tabasco!” a little dog who comes with a big warning: this boy is in the Red Zone on the cute meter!

Tabasco is a one year-old Wheaten spitfire who weighs in at an impressive eleven pounds, and he’s a body in perpetual motion.  Foster Mom says he won’t even stay still for his “intake” picture - he’s just ready to play, play, play!

Wan’a Play?

Tabasco had been staying in a small humane society shelter, but unfortunately it was not a “no-kill” shelter.  They had taken him in as a stray, and although they tried everything they could to find Tabasco’s owner, no one ever stepped up to claim him.  So, even as cute and young as he is, time and space were running short for Tabasco.  That’s when a friend of Col. Potter’s contacted us to tell us about this little guy.  We made the call, and soon Tabasco was packed up and ready to move into his new CP Foster Home!

A big “Thank You!” to Sandra and Rick for going the distance for this beautiful little dog.  We know he’s now on the right road to a wonderful life!

Marty Makes a Happy Transition to Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Marty, a Charming and Lively 2 year old Gray Brindle Male

Please give a hearty Welcome to Marty, a 2 yr old boy who is friendly, happy, and ready for action!  Marty was found as a stray and taken to a small nearby shelter.  The shelter staff works diligently to place with rescue any dogs that aren't adopted.  This boy kept the officers company in the shelter office, and entertained them with his happy antics.  When Col. Potter inquired about the adorable Cairn boy, Officer Marty asked for CP's assistance to find a suitable home for this lively boy.  CP's Marty is named after this kind officer who ensured that this young Cairn boy was safe.

Marty is eager to greet both people and dogs.  He also loves to go on walks.  Put a leash on Marty and he is ready to go, wherever directed, as he is eager to explore the world.  Marty knows "sit" and "lay" and loves to play fetch.  Marty is enjoying a spa week and will then move to his Foster home.

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Abela, a Beautiful 5 year old Wheaten Female

Please give a nice big Welcome to another sweet Cairn girl, Abela, who has just joined the Col. Potter family!  Abela found herself in a shelter, but they didn't have room for her, so she was in trouble.  A nice gentleman contacted CP for help.  She is a darling 5 year old, and she is now having her spa treatment and will go to her Foster Dad next week, where she will get to sleep in a nice warm bed, eat some great food, and will receive the love that she deserves.

Bernard Gets a Break at Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Bernard, a very sweet & very lucky 8-9 year old Wheaten Male

Please welcome Bernard, a very sweet 8 - 9 year old boy.  His rescue was VERY challenging but turned out well – thanks entirely to Pam V!

Our Rescue Team had been monitoring his status at the shelter and had been told he had a couple of adoption interests on him and they did not need Col. Potter’s assistance.  However, when potential adopters decided he was too old for them, his rescue became Urgent.  If we were going to take him, we needed to get him ASAP or he would be euthanized.  He had been there too long and they needed the space.

So, of course, it was the middle of the week when most of our volunteers are at work.  But thanks to Pam, we were able to commit to taking him.  Once we committed, we then found out he had kennel cough.   So the next challenge was finding a vet who would board him in isolation.  We found a vet but it was 90 miles away!

So, then we tried to find another volunteer who could meet Pam and deliver him to the vet.  It would have taken Pam 5 - 6 hours to pull him and get him to the vet.  We struck out – no one was available.

After numerous phone calls, we found a vet close to Pam and to the shelter who would board him for us.   Yeah!

So we called the shelter to let them know who and when he would be picked up and then found out CP cannot pull from their shelter – we are not licensed in this state!  They would, however, allow us to pull under another Rescue Group’s license if that rescue group would vouch for us.  Luckily, we found a willing rescue group who knew of us and allowed us to use their name.

So, Pam picks him up at the shelter at 2:00 pm and is heading to the vet.  At 3:00 pm, we get a call from the vet saying they cannot board him after all:  They’ve had an outbreak of canine influenza and have 50 sick dogs!  While we’re talking to them, Pam arrives.  They give her the news.  She proceeds with his vet exam and decides she’ll just take him home and board him in a spare bedroom.

After she gets home with Bernard, she realizes how contagious this is and is very concerned (rightfully so) about her 12 week old puppy and 7 other dogs being exposed.  So, she talks her Mom into keeping him for at least 5 days since Mom has no other animals.

Bernard seems oblivious to all the problems and just keeps a smile on his face.  He is safe now with Col. Potter.  He has Pam to thank for being his special Rescue Angel - and Mom too!

Welcome Bernard!

Kessler Defines “Rescue” at Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Kessler, an approximately 9 year old Wheaten Male

Please welcome Kessler to our Col. Potter family!  Now some of you will say, “Hey wait a minute!  We just had Kessler join the CP family a few weeks ago… What's going on?”  Well, that little boy, from a few weeks ago, found his Forever with his Rescue Angel before he ever got transported to CP, and so we wanted to be sure this very special name donated through our Name a Rescue Cairn Program by Amy H., in memory of her dad's beloved boy, was carried on to another CP furkid.

Kessler is a little Wheaten dude, weighing in at just 15 lbs.  He’s from one of our big cities, let’s call it Gotham, where he was found tied to a fence - left defenseless and without resources.  He was sick, cold, and hungry - and in pain.  Eventually he was picked up by Animal Control and brought to a shelter.  And, as has happened before in these situations, the shelter was unsure of what to do with him.  “Rescue only” they said.  No chance for adoption.

When Col. Potter learned of Kessler’s situation, we knew we couldn’t leave him there in the shelter.  And, through the compassion and terrier tenacity of our volunteers, in particular Sheri K. and Mary Ellen L., we were able to pull Kessler from this shelter and get him into the warm folds of the Col. Potter blanket.

When we brought Kessler to the vet, we learned just how much trouble this one little guy was in.  He had a laundry list of medical problems, including the fact that he was still intact.  To begin with, his thinning fur and dry skin were found to be the result of an under active thyroid, a condition that once diagnosed is easy to treat with medication.

His eye had a large growth on the lid, a cyst that pressed against his eyeball giving him constant irritation.  This required surgical removal of the cyst to relieve his discomfort.

On x-ray he was found to have many many bladder stones that had lodged in his urethra, making urination very difficult and painful. The surgery to remove these stones required a dangerous incision, and it took hours to clear them all out.  Keeping Kessler on a special diet will prevent this from happening again.

And what was probably Kessler’s first dental exam ever revealed seven rotted and abscessed teeth that had to be removed during his dental surgery.

It’s difficult to think about the amount of pain this dog must have been in - and for a very long time - for things to have gotten as bad they did.

Kessler is estimated at around nine years old now, and he was originally purchased as a puppy from a pet store.  So we imagine he was loved for a little while - or at least someone was amused by him for a while - but no one ever cared for him or his well-being.

Kessler’s story is one that just brings home the true meaning of Rescue.  His story is one that we all live and breathe in our hearts - one where we all say, “Someone, please help this dog!”   And in a way, we’re lucky, because we’re Col. Potter Cairn Rescue - and we can be that someone who will help this dog.

Maybe you’re not close enough to Kessler to drive his transport or to Foster him, but consider becoming a Guardian Angel for this little guy, or maybe drop a few dollars into the “Kessler Fund.”  The surgeries and treatments that were needed to give this little Cairn his quality of life back were extensive and expensive.  The good news is that he’s healing and will be whole again soon - and that’s because of who we are at Col. Potter and what we do.

Thanks to all of you!

Jamilla & Zaina Leap into Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Jamilla, a Playful 7.5 year old Wheaten Female

Zaina, a Sweet 7.5 year old Black Brindle Female

A shelter contacted a Col. Potter Volunteer about these Cairn girls and she then contacted Intakes to see if we could help get them out of that shelter.  Intakes went to work right away to make that happen.

Jamilla and Zaina are sisters and have always been together, and they are estimated to be 7 1/2 years old.  Jamilla is the Wheaten girl, and her name means “Beautiful”.  Her picture shows some fur is missing and that she has a lot of brindle through her, and we know she is going to be very beautiful once her coat grows back in.  Zaina is the Dark Brindle girl and her name means “Queen”, which is exactly what she will be treated like, now that she is a part of the CP family!

We are hoping that these girls can stay together as they are very attached to each other and love to play together.  They have been seen having fun, playing leap frog together.  The girls are now safely in a very special foster home that agreed to take them both.  We hope that there is a Forever Home out there that is looking for two Beautiful girls that deserve to be treated like Queens!

Please give a Warm Welcome to Jamilla and Zaina!

Mocha brings new energy to CP

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Little Mocha was turned in to a shelter by her owner. The owner was moving in with their parents and couldn’t take care of her any longer.

Mocha is estimated to be 3 years old and described as VERY friendly, full of energy and good with other dogs. She’ll be spending the week at the vet and head to her foster home this coming weekend.

Welcome to Col. Potter, little one!

Welcome Mickelson!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please help me welcome Col. Potter's new young man, Mickelson. This gorgeous gray brindle 3 year-old found himself surrendered to a shelter when his owner headed off to college. Mickelson is described as typical terrier: exuberant, vocal, full of energy.

He is heading to a foster home this weekend, and I imagine it won't be long before he is adopted!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

An email came to Col. Potter for help--very distinguished middle age male cairn was in a shelter and had some medical problems that were preventing him from finding a new home. CP agreed to take Caine into its care. He is reportedly a very happy and friendly little man.

Please give Caine a warm welcome into our CP family!

Red Alert! Arkie joins CP

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Red Alert! Red Alert! That was the subject line on an email to Intakes. It means call now, or a dog will not live another day. Luckily, Arkie had someone at the shelter that knew CP would help. Within 24 hours this little boy went from Red Alert, to safety.

Arkie is a 4 yo old male cairn that has been in and out of shelters all his life. This time, the shelter could not find a home for him. Yesterday he was scruffy, overweight, and had “major” skin problems. Today Arkie was bathed and put on antibiotics for the “major” skin issues that will fade away with time away from fleas and ticks. Today this little man is sleeping in a warm, friendly vet office, waiting for the start of his new life. Oh, and his weight issues, well, good food, the right exercise and lots of love will fade away that problem too!

Please give our chubby little Arkie a big CP welcome.

Welcome Manatee!

Written by an Intakes volunteer

Please help welcome our new puppy- Manatee.

This sweet little boy found himself at a shelter in Missouri, with no adopters interested in him. Col. Potter was contacted to see if we could help give him a chance at freedom.

He is estimated to be 8 months old, and is reported to be a very sweet boy. He moved to his foster home this weekend, and I doubt he will be there for very long!

Welcome Bodega to Col. Potter!

Written by a CP volunteer

It was a very good morning for Bodega in Santa Rosa, CA. It was a discovered that a Cairn mix with skin issues was languishing in a shelter and Col. Potter volunteer coordinators let me know that I could help by providing the first ride out of town and on to his new life. I picked him up without any problems at all. His obvious skin problems could demoralize any pooch but he was both nervous and enthusiastic about what was going on and his energy level was that of a perfectly healthy dog. He has a nice sharp bark but wasn't overbearing with it and once in the crate he whined a little with a bit of skepticism but then did a few circles and lay down for most of the trip.

He's very alert and is going to make someone a great friend once he gets his coat back and finds his forever home.

His skin is so bad that it may be better that the photos I took of him in the shelter office aren't that clear.

Thanks to the volunteers who met me halfway and who provided a soft, red plaid blanket to go with Bodega's new red collar and itchy skin and who sent Bodega to a vet to start his recovery.

One more of the many successes that Col Potter can lay claim to this past weekend. Go Bodega!

Say Hello to our newest CP kid, Dalton!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Please give a warm welcome to a new CP kid. Dalton found himself a stray in Connecticut, where he was picked up and brought to the local shelter. He was microchipped, but as we hear all too often, his chip was not registered so his owner could not be found. The chip was traced back to the petshop where Dalton was purchased and based on this we were able to know that he is about 3.5 years old.

Dalton has some skin issues including hair loss around his tail and on his back. We suspect that it is nothing that good food, and good care won't cure. He is boarding and getting his vet care brought up to date, and will head to Chris C. for fostering. Welcome Dalton!!

Col. Potter's Newest Spring Sweetheart

This beautiful 5 yr old wheaten girl found her way to Col. Potter by way of a good Samaritan who notified CP that she had been left at the shelter by her owners.

Thank you Montez, for checking on this girl, getting her out of the shelter and taking her to the vet. Montez's mother, Mae, who was visiting went along, so it was only fitting that this girl was partially named after her and one of Montez's granddaughters.

Please Welcome Franki Mae!
