SAY HELLO TO CP's TAR HEELS

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

One of the really wonderful things about Col. Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue is that we have such great volunteers all across the USA and Canada! We are really like a huge, international family with cousins, aunts, uncles, grandmas and grandpas in every corner and just about anywhere one would visit, there is a CP family member not too far away. The CP Family has large "reunions" called CRAPs but some of our family members hold individual, personal reunions themselves called POOPs. Last fall, one family member had a small POOP at her home in North Carolina. Besides the camaraderie and love of Cairns they share in their hearts, they also gave monetarily from their hearts donating to name two Cairns. What a wonderful concept, friendship, companionship, watching our Cairns frolic and play, while still raising funds to help future Cairns.

Yesterday three little Cairns became the recipients of their generosity. The "Tar Heels" found love and freedom with Col. Potter, but wait ...there are going to be additions to the Tar Heels. It just so happens that not one, but both of the little girls are pregnant and due to whelp within the next two weeks, one of them probably within the next few days. Without wonderful events like the one held by Kitty K. last fall that produced this donation, we wouldn't be able to help these Cairns or allow their puppies to be born into freedom.

Introducing CP's Tar Heels:

Salisbury: Female, black brindle, born 5/12/07 - due to whelp in 7-10 days and looks like 8 puppies in her litter

Carolina: Female, wheaten, born 5/21/08 - due to whelp any minute and looks like 6 puppies in her litter

Foster: Male, red wheaten, born 3/1/05

Carolina is in her foster home with Kathy and Barney and Salisbury will be heading to her foster home Wednesday with Lori and Mike. It shouldn't be long until we have little Tar Heels to add to our CP family!!

Please help me give a BIG CP WELCOME to CP's Tar Heels!

Wacky Wednesday!

Wednesday is the day to be WACKY! Each week we will showcase a terrierific cairn picture with an appropriate caption. Please welcome Needles!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Needles has been sitting in a shelter for 2 months, just waiting and waiting. No one came to adopt him and once the shelter workers realized he was extremely depressed, they contacted us for help. When he first arrived at the shelter, they said he was a happy, tail-wagging little boy. But as the days wore on, he wouldn’t even get up when someone walked by his kennel. I think he was losing all hope that his life would ever be a happy one again.

Well that all changed today when Carla went to spring him. She said he seemed cautiously happy to be out (even though he’s now at the vet) and kept rolling over for belly rubs. As you can see he has extreme hair loss (and has had for well over 2 months) but will start the necessary treatment to get him on the road to health and happiness.

The shelter thought he was about 11 years old, but the vet said based on his teeth and eyes, she’d guess he’s younger – possibly 8 years old.

Needles shares his new name with a once sickly foal (so named because of his many visits to the vet) who not only got healthy but went on to win both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes in 1956 (and came in 2nd in the Preakness – almost a Triple Crown Winner).

Hang in there little fellow – things will only get better from now on!

Goose and Lambert join CP!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please give a warm welcome to CPs new boys, Goose and Lambert. These two sweet cairn gentlemen found themselves home alone for very long days. While they had each other as company, their family knew it was not fair to them. We know how important humans are to cairns! The family could not change their hours to accomodate more time at home for their boys, so they searched their hearts and realized that Goose and Lambert's needs were the most important, not the selfish desire to keep their beloved pets. They contacted CP to see if we could help. With heavy hearts they gave their boys up today.

Goose is a 5 year old black brindle boy, reported to be very sweet and loving.

Lambert is a 6 year old wheaten boy, typical in his opinions on 'big dogs', and his love of being the boss.

Both are heading to their foster homes, and onto a bright future.

Welcome boys!

Ladies and Gentlemen...George Jones!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Some entertainers have been around our whole lives ... providing us with comfort, laughs, smiles and many wonderful memories. Music always seems to have a therapeutic effect on people. It stirs special memories, it touches our hearts. Musical entertainers have a profound effect on our lives. A special song comes on the radio, or a musical entertainer that we particularly enjoy and it can change a bad day into a good day. It can replace a frown with a smile. It can recall special places and special people.

A new little boy has joined the Col. Potter family. He somehow lost his family and no one came looking for him. He's estimated to be 1.5 years old.

He has been named George Jones - a donated name from Deb W. This name is in honor and memory of two very special people. George is to remember the untimely and much too early passing of our Danielle and George's son. Jones is to remember the #1 foster dad ever in CP and our very own Kaaren J's beloved husband, Richard. We can only hope that this special little boy will bring some comfort and recall special moments and memories for these two families.

Please help me welcome George Jones to the CP family!

Did your dog have a seizure? What should you do?

Contributed by a CP Volunteer

What happened?

Having had a Cairn with seizures, this is very interesting.... and it's always in the back of my mind...

Seizures are one of the most misunderstood conditions in canine health. Some doctors estimate that between 0.5 and 5.7% of all dogs experience a seizure at some point. Today I'd like to help you understand what happens during a seizure and how to react in the best way to keep your dog safe.

Seeing your dog have a seizure for the first time is truly frightening. It comes on with no warning. One minute your dog is happily enjoying an afternoon nap. Then, in an instant, his entire body begins shaking with wild muscle spasms. He has an empty "faraway" look in his eyes ... and you can't help but wonder if he knows what's happening. It's a tough thing to talk about, but it happens. And it happens more often than you might think. If they happen to your dog, you need to be prepared. You should:

Keep your dog safe. If he's not on the ground, make sure he doesn't fall. If his thrashing might knock something over that could hurt him, move it.

Keep yourself safe. Your dog will not swallow his tongue. NEVER put your hands in his mouth - you could get seriously bitten.

Be aware. The more you can tell your vet, the better. What happened? How long did it last? How severe was it?

Get treatment. Once the seizure has passed, take your dog to the ve
t.

Finding out why your dog had a seizure is like solving a puzzle. It's tough to put all the pieces together. A seizure is difficult to diagnose because it's not a disease. It's a symptom (with any number of causes). It could be "epilepsy." This common diagnosis is made when no other causes can be found. Epilepsy could even be genetic since it is more common in certain breeds, like German Shepherd dogs, Irish Setters, Retrievers, Poodles and Dachshunds. There is no diagnostic test for epilepsy. The only way to find out if your dog has it is through the process of elimination. All other possible causes must be ruled out through a series of testing.

The diagnostic process generally requires a lot of testing-and that means lots of money, too. Some people wonder: does the cause really matter as long as the dog comes through the seizure OK?

If the cause is medical, environmental, metabolic or traumatic, it could be serious or life threatening, so you need to identify it and treat it. If the cause is medical, environmental, metabolic or traumatic, it could be serious or life threatening, so you need to identify it and treat it.

If diagnosed, many of these conditions can be successfully treated - and that could save your dog's life. Yes, diagnostic tests are expensive. But they could save your dog's life.

Smiley joins the CP family

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

Imagine being no longer needed or wanted. Imagine your life depending on whether or not someone would step-up to rescue you before a certain date. Imagine looking at the face of this sweet boy and having to make these decisions....This is the fate many dogs face each and every day.

Unfortunately, most aren't as lucky as Smiley. I know right now according to his picture, he doesn't look like he can live up to that name, but I just know with time, patience and love, his sad expression will be replaced with a big smile!

Please help me give a BIG Col. Potter welcome to Smiley, an estimated 4 year old male whose name was donated by Janet H. for her dad, who loves her Cairn Gus.

Smiley, your life just changed in ways you could never have imagined and you will be smiling with happiness in no time!

PLEASE WELCOME ... THIS IS Z PLACE

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

We all have that favorite hang-out, a place to go as a respite, somewhere to gather with family and friends, a comfortable spot to relax and most importantly that corner of the world where you get lots of understanding and love. Guess what, we all have that place available to us ... it's called the Col. Potter Family and I can't think of a better way to describe this idyllic setting than This is Z Place!

Last Saturday three little Cairns were looking for this perfect place. They desperately needed a new place to call home and people who would love and take care of them. They found This is Z Place and are now part of the Col. Potter family enjoying their spa treatments this week before heading to their foster homes this weekend.

Help me Welcome This is Z Place:

Zilla: Female, estimated 2-3 years old, wheaten, with some skin infection issues we will be addressing

Zema: Female, estimated 2-3 years old, wheaten, she had some major dental issues for her age due to cage chewing in her past

Zinger: Male, estimated 2-3 years old, wheaten, this little boy unfortunately is heartworm positive and will be undergoing heartworm treatment

My thanks to Sandy for answering my plea for help for these furkids and acting so quickly to get them.

This has been a busy week for Intakes, and therefore means some large vetting bills for all of these furkids that have come in. It's only through your help and support that CP is able to say yes to furkids like This is Z Place. Thank you to all the foster homes who have stepped up and to those of you who will help these kids financially.

Welcome

The definition of FREEDOM is: "release or rescue from being physically bound, or from being confined, enslaved, captured, or imprisoned."

Over the course of history, people have fought for freedom many times and for many reasons. The struggle for FREEDOM continues today in many corners of the world and within our own country. The road traveled to reach FREEDOM is never smooth or easy.

One thing that is quite certain and has not changed since the beginning of time; change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. So we must straighten our backs and work for FREEDOM.

Saturday, five little Cairns traveled the Freedom Road with their journey bringing them to the ultimate destination - the Col. Potter family. Their struggles are now over, the bumpy, hard road they have been traveling has been paved in comfort and love and has been named Freedom Road:

Avenue: Female, 3 years old, dark brindle

Boulevard: Female, 2 years old, wheaten

Turnpike: Male, 7 months old, wheaten

Highway: Female, 6 months old, grey brindle

Expressway: Female, 6 months old, cream

Freedom Road is only possible with us all working together and your monetary contributions to keep the road open and free of blockage. Please help to keep this important roadway open for the Cairns that still need to travel it! My thanks to Monika R. for helping Freedom Road on their first trip in FREEDOM. Please help me welcome FREEDOM ROAD!

NOW BLOWING INTO CP...WIND OF CHANGE

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

I'm a rock n roller so I find inspiration from many classic rock songs. Much of what we do in rescue is very well said by the Scorpions in their classic "Wind of Change".

The world is closing in, did you ever think that we could be so close?
The future's in the air, I can feel it everywhere blowing with the wind of change. Take me to the magic of the moment on a glory night, where the children of tomorrow dream away in the wind of change.
Walking down the street, distant memories are buried in the past forever.
The wind of change blows straight into the face of time,
Like a storm wind that will ring the freedom bell for peace of mind.

Recently, three little Cairns felt the Wind of Change. Their futures are now safe with Col. Potter. The past storm winds they have endured will blow no more for they have now rung the bell of freedom.... all thanks to CP and the Wind of Change.

With the magical whistling of this amazing song playing in the background, I present Wind of Change:

Alize: 2 year old female, red wheaten, is cute as a button and ready to retire from her life as a breeding mom. When she first came to CP they thought she was pregnant but further exams have shown that is not the case.

Gale: 2 years old, red wheaten, and sister to Alize. Gale recently whelped a litter of puppies herself. Her name reflects the strength and resolve this little girl has.

Cyclone: A 4 years old male red wheaten. Cyclone is a petite, handsome little man who was also the father of Alize's puppies.

My special thanks to Carolynne M. and Paula F. for their help with Wind of Change.

These three Cairns have now been transported to the magic of the moment on a glory night, where the children of tomorrow dream away in the Wind of Change ...

Tumnus joins the CP family

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Tumnus came to Col. Potter from a shelter after he tested positive for heartworm. The shelter thought he already been tossed around to too many family members and homes. The shelter thought it best that he go to a cairn rescue that would understand what he needs and place him in the right home.

Tumnus is approximately 3 years old. He is said to be very friendly. He is loving the squeaky toys that the vet office gave him. It sounds like everyone at the office is falling in love with him! He will soon be ready for his foster home. Then he will start treatment for the heartworm. Once his treatment is complete, he will be ready for his new family.

Thanks to CP for stepping up to help with this boy or he would not of had a future. Thanks for all the volunteer that donate not only their time but money so we can help cairns like Tumnus.

Welcome Tumnus!

REMOVAL OF DOG TOY FROM PETCO SHELVES PROMPTED BY KIAH-TV NEWSFIXER

KIAH-TV NEWSFIXER
Published 02/24/2012 - 9:48 a.m. CST

HOUSTON, TX - An investigation by KIAH-TV’s “The NewsFixer” has led to a removal of a dog toy that threatened the health of a Houston canine. The toy “Snuggling Furry Friend,” sold as a private brand under the Petco label, was found to contain traces of Trimethyl Benzene, Arsenic, Cadmium and Lead, along with Naphthalene, the main ingredient in moth balls.
The toxins were detected in the Petco toy by an independent laboratory after a NewsFix viewer, Mark Smith of Houston, told the station his Chow Mix “Charlet” became sick after first chewing on the toy in December 2011. After inquiries by “The NewsFixer,” Petco agreed to pay for Smith’s veterinary expenses. Petco said it would also test all similar toys sold in its retail outlets for toxic substances.

Petco representative Lisa Epstein said, "We did, in fact, direct our stores yesterday (2/23) to remove the Lambswool Tug with Squeaker Dog Toy from our shelves, pending the results of random sample tests that will be conducted and analyzed at an accredited laboratory. The decision to take this action was out of an abundance of caution – and it is not a product recall."

“We’re pleased we could help one of our loyal viewers,” said NewsFix News Director Gary Jaffe, “And we’re proud that ‘The NewsFixer’ has continued to be an effective and relevant investigative force in the community.”

Previous “NewsFixer” investigations have revealed wasted resources by the City of Houston, and have prompted hastened municipal cleanup in residential areas.

Landers lands in CP

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Landers was a stray that had been wondering around a TX neighborhood. A kind woman there began been feeding him. She tried to find his owner but, with no tags or microchip, it was impossible. She put up flyers, made calls and put him on the internet, but no one came forward to claim him. She contacted Col. Potter but then Landers went missing for several days and we thought maybe something had happened to him. Thankfully, something guided him back to this kind woman. She and her neighbor were able to get him in a crate. He was then taken to meet up with CP volunteer who took him to the vet.

Landers is estimated to be 7 years old. He will soon be on his way to his foster home where he will be made ready for his very own forever home where he will be safe, have a nice warm bed, and never have to worry about where his next meal will come from.

A big welcome to Landers!!

Cormac the Royal has arrived!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Our newest Col. Potter boy is Cormac, a 7 year old owner surrender. He was a loved family member but due to changing dynamics, rescue was necessary. He's a handsome wheaten boy with a regal look and stance. A good belly rub is enjoyed when he's not attending to royal duties.

Cormac is a name with an Irish-Gaelic origin with more than one history. Here's the history of the name that I thought was the most fitting: From old Irish corbmac "son of the charioteer." Cormac Mac Airt was probably the most famous of the ancient kings of Ireland. As a ruler of Tara, the seat of the high kings of Ireland, he was famous for his wise, true and generous judgments. Cormac owned the wonderful gold cup given to him by the sea-god Manannan Mac Lir. If three lies were spoken over it, it would break in three; three truths made it whole again. Cormac used this cup during his kingship to distinguish falsehood from truth and when he died, the cup vanished.

Today, Cormac is holding the gold cup high so that all cairns can see it as a beacon to guide them to Col. Potter and a good fun life.

Please Welcome Cormac!

Nim steps into CP!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please give a warm welcome to Col. Potter's new boy, Nim. This four year old wheaten boy was surrendered to a shelter; his family reported they were moving and could not afford to take care of him. The shelter saw his typical cairn boy attitude and knew that his best chance for successful adoption was through breed rescue. They contacted CP for help.

He contracted Kennel Cough while at the shelter, and the shelter was willing and able to treat him and hold him during that time. Once cleared from the infection, he was picked up by our CP volunteer. He will have his spa treatment this week and then head to his foster home Saturday.

While we know not all shelters can hold and treat a sick dog, we have proof that there are some that go above and beyond to help those in their care. This shelter did a great job on behalf of Nim. For that we are grateful!

Welcome, Nim!!

Welcome Ruthie!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please help welcome Col. Potter's new girl, Ruthie. This sweet, fun loving 10 year old lady was surrendered to a vet when the family claimed she 'no longer fits our lifestyle, so please euthanize her'. The vet refused, thankfully. Ruthie was surrendered to the vet, and fostered by one of the staff. She contacted CP in hopes that we could help this cairn.

Ruthie may be 10, but from all accounts has the energy and spunk of a much younger dog. She loves to play with toys, is curious and friendly.

Thanks to all who helped her along her journey into CP.

Welcome, Ruthie!

Introducing Shroder!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

This adorable little male cairn found himself in a shelter and no one came looking for him. So as of this past weekend, he’s a Col Potter kid!

Shroder is estimated to be about 2 years old and seems like the typical, high energy young cairn. Our volunteer who picked him up from the shelter and delivered him to the vet said he traveled very well in the car but, when they arrived at the vet’s office, he decided to growl and confront a stuffed toy on the window sill. He was probably telling that toy that he’s ready to PLAY!

Welcome little Shroder!

Hopper rides into CP

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Remember Easy Rider? The carefree ride of easy going guys just seeing what was out there? One of the actors in this classic film was Dennis Hopper. Poor guy just didn't always know what was going on or where he was going. Col. Potter now has it's own carefree, easy going guy who isn't sure what happened. Our Hopper is a mellow guy who lost his home when family moves didn't include him. He's already cruised into his foster home, kicked up his paws and settled right in.

Hopper is a handsome wheaten/silver dude looking for a cool ride to his forever home. Please welcome Hopper!!
