Tabasco does the Hot Fox Trot to Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Tabasco, a saucy little 1 year old Wheaten Male
¡Hola a Todos!

Let’s all give a hearty CP welcome to a saucy new dude who has just joined our Col. Potter family - Meet “Tabasco!” a little dog who comes with a big warning: this boy is in the Red Zone on the cute meter!

Tabasco is a one year-old Wheaten spitfire who weighs in at an impressive eleven pounds, and he’s a body in perpetual motion.  Foster Mom says he won’t even stay still for his “intake” picture - he’s just ready to play, play, play!

Wan’a Play?

Tabasco had been staying in a small humane society shelter, but unfortunately it was not a “no-kill” shelter.  They had taken him in as a stray, and although they tried everything they could to find Tabasco’s owner, no one ever stepped up to claim him.  So, even as cute and young as he is, time and space were running short for Tabasco.  That’s when a friend of Col. Potter’s contacted us to tell us about this little guy.  We made the call, and soon Tabasco was packed up and ready to move into his new CP Foster Home!

A big “Thank You!” to Sandra and Rick for going the distance for this beautiful little dog.  We know he’s now on the right road to a wonderful life!

Please Volunteer to Foster and help us offer a safe place to play for every Cairn in need!

Marty Makes a Happy Transition to Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes Coordinator

Marty, a Charming and Lively 2 year old Gray Brindle Male

Please give a hearty Welcome to Marty, a 2 yr old boy who is friendly, happy, and ready for action!  Marty was found as a stray and taken to a small nearby shelter.  The shelter staff works diligently to place with rescue any dogs that aren't adopted.  This boy kept the officers company in the shelter office, and entertained them with his happy antics.  When Col. Potter inquired about the adorable Cairn boy, Officer Marty asked for CP's assistance to find a suitable home for this lively boy.  CP's Marty is named after this kind officer who ensured that this young Cairn boy was safe.

Marty is eager to greet both people and dogs.  He also loves to go on walks.  Put a leash on Marty and he is ready to go, wherever directed, as he is eager to explore the world.  Marty knows "sit" and "lay" and loves to play fetch.  Marty is enjoying a spa week and will then move to his Foster home.

Col. Potter Needs a Few More Sunny Rooms!
Please Volunteer to Foster and help us shine happiness and joy on every Cairn in need!

Please  Consider being a CP Volunteer!

Landers lands in CP

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Landers was a stray that had been wondering around a TX neighborhood. A kind woman there began been feeding him. She tried to find his owner but, with no tags or microchip, it was impossible. She put up flyers, made calls and put him on the internet, but no one came forward to claim him. She contacted Col. Potter but then Landers went missing for several days and we thought maybe something had happened to him. Thankfully, something guided him back to this kind woman. She and her neighbor were able to get him in a crate. He was then taken to meet up with CP volunteer who took him to the vet.

Landers is estimated to be 7 years old. He will soon be on his way to his foster home where he will be made ready for his very own forever home where he will be safe, have a nice warm bed, and never have to worry about where his next meal will come from.

A big welcome to Landers!!

A Toddy for Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

The Intakes Team is convinced that a little black brindle angel is guiding all of these dark brindle cairns to Col. Potter. We have had an unusually high number in the past several weeks and appreciate the little angel’s assistance in getting them to safety.

This gorgeous little 3-5 year old male cairn was picked up as a stray – no microchip or tags and no one came looking for him. A big thank you to Deb S for getting him from the shelter to the vet this morning. Deb says he seems very friendly and happy, but he does bark at the other dogs. Maybe he’s just bragging about his good fortune in finding refuge with Col. Potter.

Welcome Toddy!

Introducting Atkins!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please give a warm welcome to a lucky cairn boy, Atkins. Atkins was found by a kind woman, who took him in while she searched for his owners. After having no luck, and absolutely not being able to keep him, she reached out to a small breed rescue who referred her to Col. Potter. The CP rescue team responded quickly to determine if he was cairn and to get the details about him. With hours to spare before she had no choice but to take him to the local shelter, CP jumped in to pick him up.

Thanks to Sheri, Joy, and Lynn who all played a huge part in making sure the shelter was not his fate. He will spend a couple of days getting his spa treatment, then head to a lucky foster home.

He is estimated to be 5-7 years old and is described as very friendly, sweet and quiet. He will need to lose a couple of pounds, but other than that seems to be a great boy.

Welcome, Atkins!

Please welcome Gustav!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Can you imagine being on the street, all on your own, no identification, no collar or harness, and no money to buy a burger?

That's the situation Gustav found himself in. No one knows how he became a wanderer, whether he was a stray or someone dropped him off in a neighborhood to fend for himself. Being a hungry and smart young cairn, Gustav surveyed the neighborhood deciding who would be best to help him. He saw a house where some happy dogs lived with a nice lady. AHA - that's where I'm going!! Gustav kept showing up at the same house every day until he convinced the kind lady he needed help. This wonderful Samaritan did everything possible to find his owners. No microchip, no answer to all the ads and found dog posters--no one was looking for him. The local authorities had no reports of a lost cairn.

Our wonderful Col. Potter rescue team contacted the caretaker in case rescue was needed. As time went on and no one came for him, the caretaker decided Gustav needed the help only CP could provide for wayward cairns.

Gustav is thought to be about 3 years old, knows some commands--sit, down, stay, and is a cute, furry boy. He's energetic and enjoys long walks. Gustav has come in from the streets and is looking for a forever home where he will be treated like a king. Please welcome Gustav!

Frisbee flies into CP!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Frisbee was found as a stray and turned in to a small shelter. No one came to claim him and he was running out of time. A shelter volunteer contacted us for help. Fortunately, one of our volunteers who attended the WI cairn party was traveling in the general vicinity of the shelter on her way home and offered to pick him up and deliver him to the vet.

From all accounts, he sounds almost perfect!! “As sweet as can be”, “likes everyone”, “gives lots of kisses”, “housebroken” “walks great on a leash” “likes other dogs”. And besides all that he’s very handsome with his dark muzzle and multi-colored coat. Frisbee is estimated to be between 3 and 5 years old and weighs about 15 lbs.

Unfortunately someone gave him a very bad haircut (most likely using just scissors). But it will grow back and he’ll be even more handsome.

Welcome little guy! We’ll find the perfect home for you.

Please welcome "McNally" to the CP family!

Contributed by a CP Intakes Volunteer

McNally is a 2 year old fellow! Not much is known about this boy as he was picked up as a stray. He was found on the street where his leash was tangled up on a fence, which in a way was his saving day. He must have been someone’s pet because he had a collar, harness and leash on him but, no one came to claim him. The shelter has a contract with a local vet to house pets if they are filled up so, again he was lucky not to have to go to the shelter.

CP was contacted and on the day he was to be euthanized CP stepped in to take ownership of him. He was able to stay at the vet office for his neuter/vetting. This vet office was very helpful in working with us to save this boy! Thanks again to all the volunteers of CP that give not only of their time but, their money to help save cairns in need or cairns like McNally would not be here. I’m sure he will be ready in no time for a forever family that will love him and be happy to claim him as their own!!

A big welcome to McNally!!

Who's on First?? Why it's Abbott & Costello!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Who doesn't remember the legendary skit "Who's on First" with Abbott & Costello? It was and still is amusing to watch providing us with ongoing antics and frivolity. Now Col. Potter has its' very own Abbott & Costello!

Here's their story: One day a kind lady noticed two young small dogs meandering in the neighborhood on an adventure. Soon she realized these boys had no idea where they were! She scooped the boys up for their own safety. After finding no I.D. or microchips, she proceeded to put a "Found Dogs" program into action. Posters, phone calls, fliers - all resources used. No one came looking for these young boys. Maybe they weren't strays after all, maybe they had been abandoned. We'll never know and they're not telling. After several weeks of no results, their caretaker contacted Col. Potter for help. They were described them as silly little boys always looking for mischief! What one doesn't do, the other one will. Now that's a description of young cairns, isn't it??

Abbott, the wheaten boy, is estimated to be 2 years old.

His sidekick, Costello, the black brindle pup, is 6 to 8 months old.

Both boys are undergoing their spa treatment right now. The vet reports both to be healthy, active boys. Please welcome Abbott & Costello!!

WHAT A "GEM" - New Little CP Girl

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

How in the world did this little gem wind up in a shelter? And why didn’t her family come looking for her? We’ll never know the answers to those questions--but not to worry--she’s a CP girl now. And we’ll find her a new family that will treasure her.

Gem is estimated to be 3-4 years old, weighs 14lbs., has a gorgeous coat of many colors, and is a very sweet and friendly girl.

So please welcome GEM to the CP family.

Keltie, our newest CP furkid

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

An emergency email came into CP Intakes from an over crowded shelter--"Please help this little 13.5 lb, 1.5 year old male, his time is limited here". Within 24 ours, Keltie was our newest CP furkid. There is not much known about him as he is a shelter stray. However, his transporter did say he is very puppy like and he did not like to be crated, but he settled down within a couple of minutes of been given a toy to play with.

I’d like everyone to give Keltie a big CP welcome!

HO HO HO ... GUESS WHO JUST SLID DOWN THE CP CHIMNEY!

Written by CP's VP of Intakes

The need for rescue assistance doesn't take a holiday ever. Shelters continue to take in far too many lost, abandoned and unwanted animals daily. Those not reclaimed, adopted or lucky enough to find a rescue to take them, have no future, no loving, caring family to spend the holidays with. They won't know the joy of a special treat or gift for the holidays ... they will only know death, their bodies discarded like used wrapping paper.

One of our wonderful vets was contacted by the local shelter about a Cairn that had been picked up as a stray. No one came to claim him and the shelter is so overflowing with dogs they have them in small wire crates stacked on top of each other as high as they can go. No one is adopting right now because of the holidays and even those few families looking can't even see half the available dogs at this shelter because they are so crammed in. By the time Santa Claus is making the rounds this year, this boy would have been dead. Luckily for him, someone was making their list and checking it twice, deciding he wasn't naughty, but rather quite nice and so made the effort to get him to rescue. Tonight this adorable, friendly, full of personality little Cairn boy is now snuggled all safe and warm in a kennel at our vet while visions of a happily ever after dance in his head.

Please welcome Claus to the CP Family ... Ho Ho Ho!

Introducing McQueen - Video!!

McQueen was found on a busy street alone and cold. A big boy weighing 28 lbs, McQueen is a well fed, happy, loving male cairn. He is young, estimated to be between 3 and 4 years old. Unfortunately, the woman that saved McQueen from the streets could not keep him. Col Potter was called, and McQueen became our newest CP kid today.

He is reportedly very sweet and loving, likes to be around people, gets along great with other dogs. Let's all give McQueen a warm CP welcome!

This little guy arrived in his foster home yesterday and seems to have adjusted to life in a foster home very quickly. It’s pretty obvious that he was someone’s beloved baby. He sits for treats and takes them very gently. He loves being brushed. No accidents in the house or crate and no attempts to mark anything. He hasn’t met my boys yet, but reports from the vet office where he spent several days, he loves other dogs. His only “flaw” is his weight (28 lbs.); but with the help of CP, he’s on a diet and exercise program.

Here's a video of McQueen (Mickey) sitting for a treat!

Please welcome Harrigan!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please welcome Harrigan to the Col Potter family. Harrigan was a shelter stray and is estimated to be 3-4 years old. Our volunteer who rescued him from the shelter reports that:

He's a nice little guy with a lot of energy and he is a "bouncer," meaning that he tends to jump straight up into the air in excitement. He seems to love all people and is very social, if a bit wild (but that's probably from being cooped up in a kennel at the shelter). His coat is coarse, even for a cairn and there is some hair loss on his back, but not very much.

It’s so hard to imagine that someone wasn’t missing this little guy, but no one called or went to the shelter to claim him.

Don’t worry Harrigan, we’ll find you a new family that will love you and keep you safely at home.

Hector joins Col. Potter!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Hector found himself homeless and wandering the streets. A good Samaritan saw him and took him in to keep him safe while they searched for the owner. No owners were found and the good Samaritan contacted a local rescue for help. The rescue was for another breed, but they took Hector in, knowing of Col. Potter. They contacted a local CP volunteer, who then contacted Intakes and the wheels were set in motion to make Hector a CP boy.

At that point Hector already had three new friends that took a little time out of their busy schedule to help him. His new friends didn't end there. There was also the CP volunteer who said "yes" to housing him for a short time and then helped to transport Hector to his new foster home. Finally, he found a friend in the foster home who said yes to fostering him.

Each new friend was important in Hector finding his way to safety and Col. Potter. Five people made a difference, each taking a small amount of time to help. No matter what the task or how little time you can devote....it does make a difference in the chain of events to helping a cairn in need.

Hector was poor and homeless and now is rich with many friends!

Jester rescued by Col. Potter

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Jester is an 8 year old stray that came into a Midwest shelter. When his time was up CP was called to take him in.

This little guy is a tad under weight as he weighs only 14lbs. It was discovered he was in need of some long overdue dentistry. Poor little guy, wants to eat, but he just hurts! Jester will receive all the vetting he needs and be on his way to his foster home soon!

Let’s all give a big CP welcome to Jester.

CP's newest intake--Stooshie!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Found on the streets in a rural area on the east coast, a matted and dirty terrier was deemed unadoptable due to his “poor condition”. CP was contacted to take him, and less than 24 hours later, this little man made his was to the vet’s office. His poor condition turned out to be a nothing more than a course antibiotics and a good bath to cure him of his “unadoptability”.

Stooshie is an old Scottish name meaning “A little bit of trouble”. Thankfully, this little man is not living up to his name. Stooshie has stole the hearts of every person in the vet office. Reportedly, he’s the perfect house guest, loving, friendly, funny, full of personality. He’s brought nothing but joy to their office.

Everyone please give a big CP welcome to our newest intake, Stooshie.

Rescue angel guides Matty to CP

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

The heat and humidity this summer has been tough for all of us. Luckily we can escape to air conditioning, shade, cool places and the comfort of our homes. A refreshing drink of water can quench our thirst and parched throats.

Can you imagine being a young cairn out in the middle of nowhere enduring near 100 degree heat? On top of that, you are running down the road to the point of exhaustion looking for something or someone.

Matty was found in this situation. A woman driving down a country road, no houses for miles, saw this little guy running down the road. She stopped, gathered up Matty and he collapsed in her car from exhaustion. It was a very lucky day for Matty. His rescuer just happened to be a person who regularly works with shelters and rescues to save furkids of all kinds. She gave him food, water, shelter and TLC. Matty suffered fur loss from a flea allergy and his rescuer helped ease his discomfort. Matty had no microchip or identification of any kind. She contacted Col. Potter after no one came looking for him.

Matty is a delightful young cairn, possibly around 3. He's housebroken, neutered, gets along with dogs of all sizes and cats. He's playful, curious, charming and loves lap time. He also enjoys air conditioning.

Thanks to all of you who support Col. Potter and the rescue of cairns. Without your support it wouldn't be possible to rescue sweet cairns who are in emergency situations like Matty. Just look in his eyes and know that if it hadn't been for his rescue angel, he wouldn't be here today. She was very thankful that Col. Potter was able to help with the next step in Matty's journey.

Col. Potter is very lucky to have our newest little guy, Matty!

Cute little Zeva crawls into CP!

Written by a CP Intakes volunteera

I received a call this morning from my local animal service asking if Col. Potter could take this little girl. She was picked up as a stray and no one came looking for her. She was past her hold time and the shelter was out of room. Sooooo….. with some quick emails/phone calls she got approval to become a CP girl!

She’s estimated to be 5-7 years old and weighs about 13 lbs. She has some hair loss on her back and is a little itchy. Zeva is a very sweet, happy little girl and does the cutest little belly crawl.

Please welcome Zeva!

Welcome DJ Buddy

Written by a CP Intakes volunteer

Please help welcome DJ Buddy, a very lucky boy. This little one found himself tied to a pole in Pennsylvania. He arrived at the shelter for his "stray hold". When that was over, he was in danger of euthanasia due to space issues. Col. Potter was contacted, having worked with this shelter in the past. Thanks to one of our dedicated volunteers, he was pulled within hours of the Intakes Team learning that he was in immediate danger. As always, the outpouring of offers of help from CP volunteers was wonderful! So many offering to help, knowing that his life depended on it!

DJ Buddy is estimated to be one year old, and reported to be very sweet. He is enjoying his spa treatment, before moving onto his foster home.

Welcome DJ Buddy!
