Cheerwine joins CP!
Cheerwine is a 3-4 year old, 18lb sweet girl that found herself in a high kill shelter in North Carolina. During her stay there, she was put into caged runs with both large and small dogs. This didn’t phase her at all. Cheerwine hasn't met a dog or person she didn’t get along with!
During her time at the shelter Col. Potter received several pleas to help this little bundle of joy. When her hold time was up, CP was able to pull her and get her to a vet. Cheerwine has continued to impress the vet staff; she is indeed a sweet wonderful loving girl.
Let’s all give a big CP welcome to Cheerwine.

Introducing Paget

This adorable little guy was found on the streets by an animal control officer and taken to the shelter. His owners were found, and promised to claim him, but they never showed. The shelter called Col. Potter as Paget had been at the shelter for weeks and his time was running out.
CP arranged for someone to fetch him from the shelter and take him to a vet. Paget is estimated to be 3-4 years old. Not much more was known about him, but he’s proven to be an adorable, funny little guy who has won the hearts of everyone at the vet’s office.
Let’s all give a warm CP welcome to our newest intake!

WHAT A "GEM" - New Little CP Girl
How in the world did this little gem wind up in a shelter? And why didn’t her family come looking for her? We’ll never know the answers to those questions--but not to worry--she’s a CP girl now. And we’ll find her a new family that will treasure her.
Gem is estimated to be 3-4 years old, weighs 14lbs., has a gorgeous coat of many colors, and is a very sweet and friendly girl.
So please welcome GEM to the CP family.

Welcome Micah!

Please help welcome Col. Potter's Micah. This sweet boy is a beautiful gray brindle, estimated to be between 3 and 4 years old. He is described as sweet and very smart, with amazing house manners. He is typical cairn, loves to be on the move and active. He is settling into his foster home, and will be looking for his forever family soon.
Welcome, Micah!

Introducing McQueen - Video!!

McQueen was found on a busy street alone and cold. A big boy weighing 28 lbs, McQueen is a well fed, happy, loving male cairn. He is young, estimated to be between 3 and 4 years old. Unfortunately, the woman that saved McQueen from the streets could not keep him. Col Potter was called, and McQueen became our newest CP kid today.
He is reportedly very sweet and loving, likes to be around people, gets along great with other dogs. Let's all give McQueen a warm CP welcome!
This little guy arrived in his foster home yesterday and seems to have adjusted to life in a foster home very quickly. It’s pretty obvious that he was someone’s beloved baby. He sits for treats and takes them very gently. He loves being brushed. No accidents in the house or crate and no attempts to mark anything. He hasn’t met my boys yet, but reports from the vet office where he spent several days, he loves other dogs. His only “flaw” is his weight (28 lbs.); but with the help of CP, he’s on a diet and exercise program.
Here's a video of McQueen (Mickey) sitting for a treat!

Please welcome Harrigan!

Please welcome Harrigan to the Col Potter family. Harrigan was a shelter stray and is estimated to be 3-4 years old. Our volunteer who rescued him from the shelter reports that:
He's a nice little guy with a lot of energy and he is a "bouncer," meaning that he tends to jump straight up into the air in excitement. He seems to love all people and is very social, if a bit wild (but that's probably from being cooped up in a kennel at the shelter). His coat is coarse, even for a cairn and there is some hair loss on his back, but not very much.
It’s so hard to imagine that someone wasn’t missing this little guy, but no one called or went to the shelter to claim him.
Don’t worry Harrigan, we’ll find you a new family that will love you and keep you safely at home.

Please welcome Brosnan to CP

Please welcome this handsome little cairn to Col. Potter. He is estimated to be 3-4 years old and early reports indicate he’s a happy boy who loves toys and balls, rolls over for belly rubs, and his tail goes non-stop when he's happy.
Welcome Brosnan to the CP family!

Give a warm welcome to Tippy!

We received a call on Thursday afternoon from a CA shelter that this little, 3-4 year old, male cairn was way past his hold time and no adopters or local rescue groups were going to take him. The shelter gave us until Monday to get him or he would be euthanized. I put out a plea to our SF Bay-area volunteers and had an overwhelming response of offers to help, even though the shelter was 2+ hours from where most live.
So, yesterday Denise F made the long trek to the shelter to save the little guy. When she arrived, she called to let me know about a “little problem” – turns out the little male is actually a little female! So we had to do a quick name change. Tippy is now at the vet for a week of r&r. The vet reported the first thing she needed was a bath since she smelled so bad, but added that she’s very sweet and friendly with all the staff. She loves being carried around and is an enthusiastic tail-wagger.
Please welcome Tippy to Col Potter and give a big round of applause to our CA volunteers, especially Denise for spending all day getting her to safety.

Rescue angel guides Matty to CP

The heat and humidity this summer has been tough for all of us. Luckily we can escape to air conditioning, shade, cool places and the comfort of our homes. A refreshing drink of water can quench our thirst and parched throats.
Can you imagine being a young cairn out in the middle of nowhere enduring near 100 degree heat? On top of that, you are running down the road to the point of exhaustion looking for something or someone.
Matty was found in this situation. A woman driving down a country road, no houses for miles, saw this little guy running down the road. She stopped, gathered up Matty and he collapsed in her car from exhaustion. It was a very lucky day for Matty. His rescuer just happened to be a person who regularly works with shelters and rescues to save furkids of all kinds. She gave him food, water, shelter and TLC. Matty suffered fur loss from a flea allergy and his rescuer helped ease his discomfort. Matty had no microchip or identification of any kind. She contacted Col. Potter after no one came looking for him.
Matty is a delightful young cairn, possibly around 3. He's housebroken, neutered, gets along with dogs of all sizes and cats. He's playful, curious, charming and loves lap time. He also enjoys air conditioning.
Thanks to all of you who support Col. Potter and the rescue of cairns. Without your support it wouldn't be possible to rescue sweet cairns who are in emergency situations like Matty. Just look in his eyes and know that if it hadn't been for his rescue angel, he wouldn't be here today. She was very thankful that Col. Potter was able to help with the next step in Matty's journey.
Col. Potter is very lucky to have our newest little guy, Matty!

Give a warm welcome to Griff!

Last Wednesday, Intakes was contacted by a Westie rescue friend who had been contacted directly by a shelter rescue coordinator about a cairn boy who is heartworm positive. Being heartworm positive is a death sentence in shelters if a rescue can’t be found. And many smaller rescue groups don’t have the resources to take in and treat these dogs. Thankfully, we got approval to bring him into the family!
Mary S. (Griff’s rescue angel) not only volunteered to pick him up from the shelter and deliver him to our vet, but she also offered to foster him and get him through his heartworm treatment.
Griff is estimated to be 3-4 years old, and Mary’s initial report is that he is very cute, active and friendly.
Please give Griff a big “Welcome to the CP Family” and a huge “thank you” to Mary for jumping through hoops to make this happen. And last but not least a big thank you to the entire CP organization for the support and donations that make it possible to save little cairns like Griff.

Please welcome Freeway to CP

Freeway is his name and he is estimated to be 3 to 4 years old. This boy is cute! He was a stray that came into the shelter and he was labeled unadoptable. His time was up if a rescue did not step up to take him. So, in enters the wonderful volunteers of CP they jump into action and go get this little guy.
I called Ruby C. who did not hesitate to be willing to do whatever was needed to get him and even offered to foster him. It's great volunteers in CP that make the difference of living or dying for some of these cairns. We could not save the ones we do without all of you!
Freeway is now having his spa stay and will soon be with his foster mommy Ruby. I'm sure he will be finding his forever family very soon and a wonderful new beginning instead of an ending!!
Welcome to Freeway!

A warm welcome to Stoddie and Nanna!
Last week, two very lucky cairns joined the Col. Potter family.
Volunteers picked up these two and chose their new names. Chosen from one of the volunteer's Slovak heritage, their names are terms of endearment for the eldest relatives in the family--the men are called Stoddie and the women, Nanna.
Stoddie is a gorgeous red wheaten boy estimated to be 3-4 years old.
Nanna

Nanna is a black brindle petite girl of around 7 years
Both kids are having their spa treatments and will move to their foster homes this weekend.
Welcome Stoddie and Nanna!

Welcome Duff to the Col. Potter family!

Please help welcome Col. Potter's new boy, Duff.
This sweet boy is estimated to be 3-4 years old and is as cute as can be. Duff is Gaelic for 'dark' and suits him well.
He made it to his foster home this week, and is looking forward to finding his forever family.
Welcome Duff!

Welcome Verano (Summer) to CP!!

There are many unsung heroes in the rescue world. There are those that give unselfishly of their time, their vehicles, their money and most importantly of their hearts. Many never ask for or receive one penny of compensation, receive a thank you or know what happens to those they are first to help. These people are the rescue angels who make the contacts with many of the Puppy Mills in the small towns in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and elsewhere convincing them to release their no longer wanted or needed breeding stock to rescue rather than selling them to continue breeding or destroying them. Many of these rescue angels spend the majority of their weekends driving long distances to the middle of nowhere, stopping at puppymill after puppymill to pick-up dogs that have never known comfort, gentle human touch or medical care. They can only pick-up those breeds that a rescue has committed to taking ... the others they have to look into their eyes ... and leave them behind.
One such rescue angel works with CP on a regular basis. Last weekend she made another such trip into the depths of PM country. Thanks to her, one little Cairn is now in the loving arms of CP!!
Verano is Spanish meaning summer. I thought it appropriate to name this little girl after the season that she has finally won her freedom.
Verano is a 3-4 years old, grey brindle female who weighs 12 pounds and she's quiet, but described as very sweet and just a little doll by the vet staff.
This beautiful little girl will be enjoying the rest of her summer at the home of Bonnie and Alan B. while she waits for her forever home to find her to enjoy all the rest of the seasons of her life. Please help me WELCOME VERANO to CP!!

WELCOME ARDEN!!

On his first night out of the shelter, he kept his crate clean all night, and didn't make a sound. He walked fairly well on lead, and barked a couple of times at a noise in a neighbor's yard. He rode quietly in the car.
Welcome Arden!

Update on our Injured Cairn Boy!
We have some good news ... and some not so good news today on our injured boy.
First the good news, his ALT dropped more than 700 points since Thursday. YIPPEE! He is starting to eat solid food and he seems much more alert and aware. All very good signs!
The bad news is that now his Albumin is a little low. Not nearly as bad as his ALT result was on Thursday, but still low enough that the surgeon isn't comfortable performing surgery just yet. Also, I haven't heard from the local rescue group today to release him to CP yet. I've called and left a message for her, so I'm hoping that she's just busy with rescuing other dogs or some holiday weekend plans.
So, the bottom line is to KEEP THE PRAYERS, POSITIVE THOUGHTS AND ENERGY COMING FOR THIS LITTLE GUY!!! He's fighting and I know he can feel our love and support, but let's not let the inner tube that is supporting him start leaking or run out of inflation. Just as soon as I know he is an official CP kid, I will let everyone know ...

Update on our Special Cairn Boy
The good news is that he's still alive and resting comfortably with ample pain killers ... This in itself is a positive sign and I know that all of your prayers and positive thoughts and energy have helped him to this point. Unfortunately, we need to keep up the effort and not let down as he is most definitely not out of the woods yet ...
Today I had the opportunity to consult with the surgeon who will be doing the surgery on this little boy. I really like this vet who was very patient with me answering all of my questions and giving me honest answers of what he thought was best for this dog. He took quite a bit of time out of his busy day to speak with me several times during the course of today and I feel very confident in his abilities and in his diagnosis and prognosis for this Cairn. The surgeon believes, from the type and extent of injuries, that he was struck by the front wheel of the car in his front shoulder (where the leg meets the pelvis), fracturing the pelvis on the left side of his body in four places. From the impact, he was spun around and the car's rear wheel then ran over his right rear leg and shattered it.
They ran a blood panel on him today to check all functions and levels in preparation for surgery and that's where we have hit another snag. His ALT levels, those that measure liver function, were off the chart high. The surgeon is hopeful that this test level is the result of the trauma to his body and bruising to his liver coupled with the antibiotics and pain killers they have him on trying to stabilize him and keep him alive. However, this level has to start dropping before surgery will even be considered. He won't be retested until Saturday and will just be kept comfortable and monitored.
Col. Potter will not be able to officially bring this boy into our program until Saturday when the legal stray hold is up on him. No one has come looking for him yet and even if someone does, it is very doubtful that they would be willing or able to afford the surgery that is contemplated for him and would have to make the decision to surrender him to rescue. We are proceeding with every intention of him becoming a CP kid as of this Saturday, but we can't make anything official or do anything more for him until that time.
Right now the thing he needs most is your continued prayers and all the positive thoughts and energy you can muster for him to stay strong, get the ALT results to drop by Saturday and most importantly, keep fighting to stay alive!
Following is a photo of him that the local rescue group took. This photo of him was taken shortly after he was picked up from the accident scene by the rescue group on the way to the vet. My thanks to Maureen for helping me with some time management by sharing this photo for me . Also, my thanks to the many people who have personally contacted me wanting to donate to his care. As soon as he is officially a CP kid, we will get a Guardian Angel Program set-up for him and I will provide full details on how you can help donate to his medical expenses.
Let's hope he can show his true Cairn colors and attitude and continue to fight for his life ... with your help ...
PRAYERS AND POSITIVE THOUGHTS REQUESTED FOR A SPECIAL CAIRN
It happened in an instant ... he ran across the street and was hit by a car ... the car never stopped. He has no collar, no identification, no microchip ... no one has come looking for him. Luckily for him, someone saw him get hit and called the local animal warden who called a local rescue group who came and picked up the little Cairn and immediately took him to the vet to be treated for shock and pain.
The xrays show his pelvis is broken in 4 places, his left rear leg broken in another 4 places and he will need surgery as quickly as possible if he is to survive. The decision will have to be made to either try and repair his pelvis and leg ... or amputate his leg and repair his pelvis. He's estimated to be 3-4 years old ...
Col. Potter is working hard to get him released to us and somehow shorten the stray hold and allow him to have the surgery he so desperately needs.
He also desperately needs our prayers, positive thoughts and energy that he can hang on and we can get him the surgery he needs. PLEASE, PLEASE keep this little guy in your prayers and thoughts today, tonight and tomorrow. Let's all hope he has the Cairn will and strength to survive and CP can find the financial assistance to pull off another miracle!
I'll post updates as soon as they are available.

Taking Their Place in CP History - Meet the Infamous Missouri Women! - Written by CP's VP of Intakes
Belle Starr was born Myra Maybelle Shirley in Carthage, MO. She was born to dirt farmers who became prosperous innkeepers to outlaws the likes of the James Gang and Younger brothers and slave holders. Belle was a prim and proper southern lady until around the time of the Civil War when her brother was killed. Some say he was killed by a band of militia, some say it was rouge union troops and yet others say it was a fight in a saloon over a card game. Well, Belle went on a rampage looking for her brother's killers, in turn killing and wreaking havoc wherever she went. She was known as the Bandit Queen.
Carrie Nation was born Carrie Moore. She was in ill health much of her life and many family members suffered from mental illness. Carrie married Dr. Charles Gloyd but he was a severe alcoholic and her marriage ended and he died shortly after. She became a big player in the temperance movement just before prohibition. She attributed her passion for fighting liquor to her failed marriage. Carrie Nation was a big woman (nearly 6' tall) and went all over the Midwest smashing saloons with an ax. There is still a bar in Carthage, MO that bears the ax marks from Carrie Nation.
Fast forward to current CP history ... CP's puppy mill kids would certainly have reason to act as an outlaw and go after those that have abused and killed so many of them. They would also want to protect others from the evils of a puppy mill. And so, I would like to introduce CP's Belle Starr and Carrie Nation:
Belle Starr: female, wheaten, 3-4 years old, 12.4 pounds
Carrie Nation: female, wheaten, 3-4 years old, 14.6 pounds
Please welcome these two Infamous Missouri Women who will now be making history with Col. Potter!

If you would like to help our puppy mill dogs and possibly win a great gift, check out our New Leash On Life XII!
