BooBoo Blizzard Blows into Col. Potter!

BooBoo Blizzard, a 3 year old Brindle Boy

Our furkids are spoiled, pampered, dressed in sweaters and coats to go out and play in the snow; some even wear boots to keep their paws warm and dry.  When they've had enough snow, cold, and ice, they have a nice, warm home inviting them back inside where a treat probably awaits them.  Wouldn't that be nice if all furkids had such a life and didn't have to live out in the elements anymore?

One boy found just such a life today when he became a member of the CP family.  He will no longer have to endure long, cold Winters outside.  He has found the good life!

His name comes from our Name a Rescue Cairn Program.  It is very poignant and meaningful considering where this boy came from and the season...

Please help us give a warm CP welcome to #5287 BooBoo Blizzard, reported to be 3 years old.  His name is donated by Bobbie B. in memory of her son's family dog, Blizzard, who was found as a puppy, abandoned in a snow drift on the side of a country road in AR.  Luckily, Bobbie's son was there, restoring power after an ice storm, and brought him in from the cold.  He had been a much loved family member and was grand daughter Gracie's first dog.  When Gracie was little, she called him BooBoo. 

Intakes has already brought in more furkids thus far in January than during the entire month of December.  Our once comfortable list of available Foster Homes has dwindled down to just a few remaining.  PLEASE consider becoming a Foster Home and helping a furkid like BooBoo Blizzard find a happily ever after.  If you are an approved Foster Home and have room for a foster currently, please let us know.

This young man - only two years old - found himself in danger of being set free into the woods.  A good Samaritan took him in to save him from that fate, but after a few months, she realized that she was not the best home for him, and reached out to Col Potter.

Now, this young man has entered the ranks of the lucky Cairns in need in the US that are able to join our fold!  He is settling into his foster home, and embarking on a new life where he will be cherished - as all dogs should be!

Introducing Sidra

Westie Rescue saved a beautiful sick brindle cairn. Her vetting revealed she not only had kennel cough, but she was also heartworm positive. To add to this poor girls pain and suffering, she has double ear infections. Westie Rescue did as much vetting as they could, but didn’t have a long term foster available for the HW treatment.

Col. Potter was called and now Sidra is a CP kid! Sidra will be at the vet clinic for a few more days before she is with her foster home.

 Look at this little ones face, is she not the cutest?

Frisbee flies into CP!

Frisbee was found as a stray and turned in to a small shelter. No one came to claim him and he was running out of time. A shelter volunteer contacted us for help. Fortunately, one of our volunteers who attended the WI cairn party was traveling in the general vicinity of the shelter on her way home and offered to pick him up and deliver him to the vet.

From all accounts, he sounds almost perfect!! “As sweet as can be”, “likes everyone”, “gives lots of kisses”, “housebroken” “walks great on a leash” “likes other dogs”. And besides all that he’s very handsome with his dark muzzle and multi-colored coat. Frisbee is estimated to be between 3 and 5 years old and weighs about 15 lbs.

Unfortunately someone gave him a very bad haircut (most likely using just scissors). But it will grow back and he’ll be even more handsome.

Welcome little guy! We’ll find the perfect home for you.

SO CLOSE TO DEATH'S DOOR ... THEN CP STEPPED IN!

Imagine having a nasty skin condition that didn't allow you to have surgery to save your life, so you were sentenced to death.

Now you say that doesn't really happen ... or does it?

The answer pretty much depends on if you are a human or you are a little female Cairn picked up as a stray and sent to a small rural shelter. The shelter has to follow their policy that all dogs must be spayed or neutered before even making it to the adoption floor. This little girl came in with a skin condition and when she was sent to the vet to have her skin checked and spayed, the vet advised her skin would have to be treated and her immune system regenerated before she could be spayed. This small, rural shelter doesn't have the time or the money to hold an animal for an extended period of time to receive such treatment. And so, she was sent back to the shelter that afternoon and put on the euthanasia list for the following morning.

Luckily Col. Potter's timing was good and with many back and forth after hours phone calls to the treating vet and shelter representatives we were able to engineer a stay of execution for this little girl. The following day the phone calls resumed as some of the cast of players had changed and we didn't rest until we had confirmation that she had been transported back to the vet and was now officially a CP kid and receiving the treatment she needs.

The treating vet believes in addition to yeast and bacteria infections on her skin, she may have sarcoptic mange, so she is being treated for both the infections and mange. Her spay surgery and dental will have to wait several weeks or even months until her immune system is stronger and she is healthier. Because of the mange, she will be boarded at the vet until she is healthy enough to move to a foster home. All of this means her vetting bill will be sizeable, but when you take one look at her face, I think you will agree that she deserves this chance at a happily ever after. Please consider making a donation to help with her vetting costs.

I am very pleased to introduce Celeste, estimated at 7-8 years old, we believe she is a wheaten brindle but hard to tell because of the hair loss and condition of her skin. She is a sweet, friendly little girl. She is named after the shelter rescue volunteer who endeavored to move heaven and earth to keep her alive and find Col. Potter to help her.

Celeste will need to be kept separated from any other resident furkids for a little while after her arrival and will need to continue with her meds and baths to help her skin heal and hair regrow to transform her into the beautiful little Cairn Princess that is hiding underneath. CP's Medical Team will be there to work with you every step of the way

WHAT A "GEM" - New Little CP Girl

How in the world did this little gem wind up in a shelter? And why didn’t her family come looking for her? We’ll never know the answers to those questions--but not to worry--she’s a CP girl now. And we’ll find her a new family that will treasure her.

Gem is estimated to be 3-4 years old, weighs 14lbs., has a gorgeous coat of many colors, and is a very sweet and friendly girl.

This little cutie became a Col. Potter kid yesterday after being released from a breeder. He’s about a year old and has a gorgeous multi-colored coat. He’s reportedly a little timid and a bit unsure of what’s happening to him, but is also described as a real sweetheart by his rescue angel, Mary N.

We received a call on Thursday afternoon from a CA shelter that this little, 3-4 year old, male cairn was way past his hold time and no adopters or local rescue groups were going to take him. The shelter gave us until Monday to get him or he would be euthanized. I put out a plea to our SF Bay-area volunteers and had an overwhelming response of offers to help, even though the shelter was 2+ hours from where most live.

So, yesterday Denise F made the long trek to the shelter to save the little guy. When she arrived, she called to let me know about a “little problem” – turns out the little male is actually a little female! So we had to do a quick name change. Tippy is now at the vet for a week of r&r. The vet reported the first thing she needed was a bath since she smelled so bad, but added that she’s very sweet and friendly with all the staff. She loves being carried around and is an enthusiastic tail-wagger.

Please welcome Tippy to Col Potter and give a big round of applause to our CA volunteers, especially Denise for spending all day getting her to safety.

Please welcome Tazzer to Col. Potter! Tazzer is a beautiful brindle male, estimated to be between 1-2 years of age. His name was donated as part of the Name a Mill Cairn program. Tazzer is named to honor the memory of a beloved cairn who went to the Rainbow Bridge earlier this year.

Tazzer came to us from a commercial breeding facility and is looking forward to learning all about being a wonderful family companion at his foster home before moving on to his forever family.

Opee joins the CP family

Everyone, meet Opee. Opee is 4 1/2 years old and joined Col. Potter this past weekend. The volunteer who picked him up said he is a baby doll! That was great news as Opee has some anxiety issues and was said not to do so well traveling, but you'd never know it based on how well he did getting to his foster home.

LET'S WELCOME GILBERT TO CP!!

Gilbert is a cute little brindle boy who is two and a half years old. He was saved when he was just a puppy from a farmer's bullet. But the family that saved him never intended to keep him. Rather, their hope was to find him a perfect forever home. Well, that was two years ago.

They gave it their best effort, but felt they could not find the right family for him. They decided to contact CP to see if we could help and here he is! He just arrived to his new foster home this afternoon and his new Foster Dad says he is a super friendly and curious little fella checking his new pad out. Welcome to CP, little Gilbert boy!

OH DEER KIDS MAKE A CRASH LANDING IN CP!

Two females had the opportunity to make their way to freedom, but because of timing, lack of foster homes and then illness, they had to wait an extra month to be rescued. Finally their time came, and their rescue chariot arrived. But wait, there was another Cairn female and two puppies that were in need of rescue right then. So, now there were 5 Cairns aboard the rescue chariot.

It was Saturday evening and it was dark as the rescue chariot traveled along the country roads of Ohio heading to our meeting place to drop-off the Cairns. OH DEER. It happened in an instant--the rescue chariot didn't see it until it was too late and couldn't avoid hitting a deer at full speed with a direct hit. The impact left the rescue chariot totalled and unable to move, it's passengers shaken and bruised.

Luckily there was a little diner nearby and several patrons helped get the rescue chariot off the road and into the parking lot. A second rescue chariot had to be summoned to retrieve the precious cargo and continue the trip. They drove all night long to complete the journey to freedom finally pulling into our vet's parking lot about 8:15 Sunday morning. The road to freedom is not smooth and sometimes there are some major bumps ... or deer ... in their path.

Named after the characters of the most famous "deer" book and movie, please help me welcome:

Flower: Female, 4-5 years old, wheaten

Faline: Female, 4-5 years old, dark brindle

Marena: Female, 4-5 years old, dark brindle

Here's hoping any reference to "deer" in their future will now be as "dear", cherished members of a family.

Another Addition to the CP Family!

Allow me to introduce one of the latest CP fosters! She is an owner surrender, 7 year old grey/black/splash of red brindle. Her name is Hedda (HED ah) which is Germanic for female warrior. Welcome Hedda!! Isn't she a BEAUTY???
