Trucker recently rolls into CP

Please welcome Trucker. He's a 6 yr old owner surrender. Owner reported that he had 2 good buddies that passed and they in turn got two Dobermans. Neither the Dobermans or Trucker got along and he was very unhappy. The owner decided that Trucker needed a happier and better life so she contacted us for help.

He flew to his foster home  to start his new journey. Please give him a warm welcome.

Pippa pops into CP

The Col. Potter family welcomes cairns from a variety of situations. Some cairns are rescued from dire circumstances while others come from loving environments.

The newest addition to the Col. Potter family has taken all her life changes in stride. CP's Pippa stepped out of her travel crate with her tail wagging and eager to greet everyone. The name Pippa means Lover of Horses. This 6 year old girl is a lover of all: adults, children, dogs. Well, maybe not birds and squirrels which she chases with delight.

Pippa charms everyone with her happy personality and her big brown doe eyes. Her foster family was completely smitten within 24 hours of her arrival. Pippa fit in as though she had always been a part of the family.

Please give a warm welcome to dear little Pippa.

Please Welcome Preston

This darling little boy has suffered with itchy skin problems for many, many years--and he’s only 6! His previous owner was unable to take care of his needs and contacted us for help. Fortunately we were able to say YES!

Preston is reportedly housebroken, good with kids, other dogs, and cats. He loves playing fetch and will roll over for a belly rub.

So welcome little Preston – your foster mom will give you all the TLC you need and deserve.

Zodiac upon his return to Col. Potter

Many people live their lives based on astrology. They will only do certain things, try new things, travel, etc. based on what their astrological sign tells them. I don't believe in astrology myself, but I have to admit, there must have been something aligning the stars and somehow protecting and guiding one little Cairn boy back to Col. Potter.

Not every adoption of an animal from a rescue, any rescue, works out, for various reasons. Many don't work out because no matter how much information, detail and explanations you can give a prospective adoptive home, nothing really compares with actually having that furkid in their home. We all try to screen prospective adoptive homes with a fine tooth comb, but still some adoptions just don't work out. Just about every rescue organization out there has a clause in their adoption contract if the adoption does not work out, for any reason, to contact them. Col. Potter is no exception.

My message is a very simple, but important one--if you adopt from rescue, any rescue, and you cannot keep your animal, for any reason, please be sure to contact the rescue you adopted from for help. Please don't turn them into a shelter.

This little guy just got lucky that he was still wearing his CP ID tag and a careful shelter worker took notice and called or who knows what could have happened to him. He'd been in his adoptive home for less than 8 months and you can see what can happen when a home really doesn't understand what the commitment and responsibilities are for taking on an animal. PLEASE don't post negative messages about the adoptive home. That's not what this is about. This is about education and reinforcement to always contact the rescue you adopted from if there are any issues at all so they can help. And most importantly, it's about the animals, always about the animals.

And now, it gives me great pleasure to introduce Zodiac, a 6 year old male whose travels through the astrological galaxies have brought him back through Col. Potter's orbit until the stars align perfectly to find his happily ever after. We're so happy to have you back with us little Zodiac!

Lucky girl Tish joins CP

Do you remember the song with the lyrics “if it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all”? Well that could have been Tish’s song before Col. Potter got involved.

A few weeks ago, we were contacted by a small rural shelter asking if we could take in a little female cairn recently diagnosed with and being treated for hypothyroidism. She had been turned in to their shelter by an elderly man who had several small male dogs that kept fighting with each other because she was there. We said “yes” and requested the shelter’s vet complete her routine vaccinations, tests and spay.

Well, it turns out little Tish is heartworm positive. We had additional testing done to determine how severe. Fortunately, she’s in the early stage and should do fine with treatment. So we proceeded with getting her spayed since the vet felt she was healthy enough to undergo the anesthesia. And, thankfully, she did fine. But, as if that wasn’t enough, she’s also suffering with a severe skin infection, and being treated with antibiotics and steroids, in addition to thyroid and heartworm treatment meds.

Despite all of these ailments, Tish is a very sweet and happy little 6 year old girl. She just arrived at her foster home today ready to start her new life.

Welcome Bradshaw

This boy was found as a stray, and when the Owner was located, she decided it was in his best interest to relinquish him. That was his lucky break! He was covered in fleas and suffering skin issues of yeast and bacteria with flea dermatitis thrown in for good measure. He was treated at the vet, brought up to date on his medical care, while an adoptive home was sought. After weeks with no luck finding a great home, the vet reached out to Col. Potter.

Bradshaw is 6 years old, and reported to be a very sweet boy. He is going to be a wonderful addition to a lucky family!

Col Potter's Rainbow Surprise

Please help welcome CP's newest little one, Regenbogen ( pronounced - Ragenbo-long o -gen) which means Rainbow in German. She is named in honor of CP's Rainbow, Fostered by Monica R and Sandy A, and adopted by Marlene and Chuck T.

Regenbogen is a tiny 12 pound wheaten girl, 6 years young. She is sweet, friendly, and very curious about new things. By all reports, she is a happy, easy-go-lucky sweetheart.

Haines has landed in Col. Potter and he couldn't be happier! This boy spent years as a breeder, eventually finding his way to a kind cairn loving soul who took him in so that he could have a better life. He is six years old, and reported to love playing with the resident cairn girls. He is a quick study--when they tell him he is doing something wrong, he changes his behavior.

He will be heading to his foster home this weekend, ready to continue his journey learning all the important skills needed to make any cairn owner laugh!

Sometime life is so very hard that even the most loved little one needs to find a new home. He has been adored, pampered, nurtured. He's received the best food and medical care. He is loved totally--flaws and all. But suffering occurs in the family, and despite what the heart and soul want, the mind knows the choice that has to be made. A choice that really isn't a choice--it is a necessity.

Col. Potter's Intakes workers hear so many reasons why dogs need 'rescue'. The hardest cases are the ones where you hear the heartbreak and devastation in the owners voice, and you know in your own heart that this is not what the owner EVER thought would happen to them. The human heart must protect itself by thinking things like this could never happen. Hopefully, knowing that CP works to do its best for every cairn entrusted to us, the owners get a small measure of peace despite the sadness. Despite their loss.

This is where McGilly comes into CP. Through no fault of his own, or his owner's, he needed to become a CP boy. He is a black brindle boy, approximately 6 years old. He loves people and attention. He is happy on a lap, soaking in love. He will be a wonderful companion to the right family.

Welcome McGilly! And Thank You, Col. Potter folks, without your work daily boys like McGilly wouldn't have the promise of another wonderful part in their lives.

Please help me welcome Col. Potter's new boy, Sniffer. This happy wheaten six year old boy joined the CP family earlier this week. His original family circumstances changed, and his owners reached out knowing the wonderful work CP does.

Welcome Parasol to the CP family!

Parasol is a 6 year old cairn princess who found herself abandoned. Her owner had asked acquaintances to watch Parasol while he had a medical procedure. It turns out he really wanted to fly home and leave Parasol with a family. However, this new family had a landlord, and when asked, Parasol was not allowed to stay with them. Col. Potter was notified, and Parasol was surrendered to us.

Parasol is reportedly a whopping 12 lbs, quiet, and loving. Please give Parasol a great big CP welcome!

Pappy has arrived!

Most of the commercial breeding males that make their way to freedom have literally been "Pappy" to hundreds of puppies. Last week approximately 100 breeder dogs of different breeds were released by owners. This is how we got our little Cypress. At the last second, an almost 6 year old male was added to the list and we scrambled to make arrangements to get him picked up to make sure he wasn't left behind.

I'm quite certain this little guy has been "Pappy" to many a puppy! I've also said that there are different levels of commercial breeders, rating them on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best. While I don't know wher this little one came from personally, it must be one on the higher end of the scale. He came in relatively clean and with a GREAT personality!! My thanks to Gina for making the trip to get him and the pictures.

So, why is this one for the men of CP? This commercial breeding facility daddy is being named in honor of all the dear husbands, Dads and Pops that gave up their Father's Day weekend to attend our CRAP.

Cabot comes to Col. Potter

This distinguished looking guy is 6 year old Cabot. He is a mellow fellow and really wants to be with people. He's been around a variety of animals having lived on a farm. He's a little on the quiet side and could lose a pound or two. Cabot is finishing up his spa treatment at a vet clinic and waiting to begin his journey to his very own forever home!

It is my pleasure to introduce a new Col. Potter guy named Byron! He's an active 6 year old who likes hiking as well as the other more routine cairn things.

Byron came to Col. Potter through no fault of his own. His family finally had to admit they weren't terrier people although they tried! They felt a handsome boy like Byron deserved to be with terrier people and other terriers. Anyone here at Col. Potter NOT a terrier person?? Great 100% terrier people! Byron is thrilled to know this is where to find all those wonderful terrier people he's heard so much about.

This cute, no-so-little, cairn girl is now a Col. Potter girl. She's 6 years old, and has had her last litter of puppies - she's now going to be enjoying life as an empty nester!

She has had her spay and spa treatment making her strawberry blonde fur glisten. Rhianna has a few pounds of baby fat to shed but that doesn't slow her down if there's a critter to be chased. She's all terrier and sweet as can be - a great combination.

She will be heading to her foster home soon and is looking forward to a forever home in her future. Please welcome Rhianna, princess-in-the-making!!

WINDY CITY KIDS IX BLOW IN TO CP!!

Two more of the Windy City Kids have now joined the CP family. Chicago is home to some of the best food around. Many food companies have had their start in Chicago. Two of the sweetest ones are Maurice Lenell Cookies and Ferrara Pan Candy Company. Maurice Lenell was a Swedish cookie maker who opened his own bakery in Chicago in 1937. Is there anyone who hasn't enjoyed a Pinwheel cookie in their life? Ferrara Pan was started by Salvatore Ferrara who came to America from Nola, Italy in 1900 and founded Ferrara Pan Candy Company in 1908 in Chicago.

I don't think there is anyone that hasn't been to the movies and enjoyed a box of Red Hots, Jawbreakers, Lemonheads or Boston Baked Beans. These two sweet little furkids are named after these all-time favorite Chicago sweet treats:

Please help me welcome Fulton. Fulton joined CP this week and is very happy to be here. He is a gorgeous, sweet 6 year old wheaten boy. This sweetheart was adopted out of a shelter, and then returned months later due to not being perfect in the housetraining area. The shelter has worked with CP before, and knew that he would do much better in a rescue situation than being adopted out from their facility.

They don't have the ability to work with him on housetraining or work with the adoptive family to support efforts in training him. They wanted him to have success in his next placement. He is reported to be very sweet, and friendly. He also lived with kids, dogs and cats, and did well with all of them. He sounds like the perfect gentleman to me. Fulton will be getting his spa treatment this week, and will be ready to move to his foster home on May 23. Many thanks to Deb R. who picked him up, and set him up at the vet. Welcome, Fulton!!
