Montreal, Winnipeg and Calgary Rainy Day Play
Due to rainy weather here the other day, the puppies could not play outside as usual, so we had play time in the kitchen. Tootsie and Wu joined in also. Poor Wu even gets pushed around by a 2 month old puppy......Winnipeg decided to hump her.
The pups were not afraid at all of the new play surroundings. Nothing seems to bother them. They are not one bit afraid of being face to face with the adult dogs either. I think these kids might rule the roost in their forever homes if not kept in check.

Kisha in Kansas finds her forever home!

Kisha came to us the end of August. She was rescued from the animal shelter here, where she had been turned in by her owners because she was lacking her two back paws and most of her tail. This was not a birth defect; her mother had chewed off her paws and tail when she was a puppy. I can only assume the mother was starving or she wouldn’t have willingly chewed on her own puppy. We agreed to take Kisha in as a foster. It didn’t take long for us to realize that the lack of back paws in no way slowed this Cairn down. She loves to run and chase her ball when thrown, although to this day she still doesn’t quite get the concept of bringing it back to you to throw again. She has her color preference for balls (really likes the pink ones), but will chase and play with any color. She goes on walks on a leash without any problem, although when she decides she has gone far enough, she stops and waits for you to turn around and go back.
The stairs going outside remains a challenge, although if we are outside and she is inside, she will go down the steps (2) to get to the landing so we can see her and come to let her out with us. She knows that if she waits long enough, hubby or I will lift her down the two steps to her freedom. Going up the stairs doesn’t seem to be a problem and she runs up them happily. She has gotten into chasing the birds that flock to our backyard – can’t wait to see what will happen this summer with all the rabbits that flock to the garden. Resident dog is in charge of keeping all squirrel up and out of reach, but that’s okay because Kisha really prefers to follow the flight pattern of the birds. She greets any strangers (and even non-strangers) with a couple barks, but will quit when told "no bark". Winter was tough on all of us. Kisha didn’t like the cold on her lacking paws and would refuse to go outside until we cleared the snow to the grass for her. Then, she would complete her duties and be ready to go back in. I have looked for little snow boots to protect her back paws, but wasn’t able to find any in our area (rural Kansas). She has been a joy to have in the household and has bonded especially well with foster dad as they go everyplace together. After six months with Kisha, we decided that Kisha was already in her forever home and adopted her.

Red Alert! Arkie joins CP

Red Alert! Red Alert! That was the subject line on an email to Intakes. It means call now, or a dog will not live another day. Luckily, Arkie had someone at the shelter that knew CP would help. Within 24 hours this little boy went from Red Alert, to safety.
Arkie is a 4 yo old male cairn that has been in and out of shelters all his life. This time, the shelter could not find a home for him. Yesterday he was scruffy, overweight, and had “major” skin problems. Today Arkie was bathed and put on antibiotics for the “major” skin issues that will fade away with time away from fleas and ticks. Today this little man is sleeping in a warm, friendly vet office, waiting for the start of his new life. Oh, and his weight issues, well, good food, the right exercise and lots of love will fade away that problem too!
Please give our chubby little Arkie a big CP welcome.
Dottie's Dollar
I am in the midst of iris sales & Sunday a young couple brought their daughter, Dottie, with them to see the iris and buy some starts. I always have "plant orphans" that people can adopt in return for a small donation to CP. The couple chose to add a little donation to their bill and commented to Dottie, who appeared to be 7 or 8 years old, that I rescued Toto dogs.
Dottie had a dollar of her own, possibly her allowance and she insisted on donating it too. Danielle has agreed that Dottie should receive her own donation receipt and thank you. We also plan to use the Orphan Plants for Orphan Dogs money this year to purchase the name Dottie in the name of a cairn fundraiser, so Dottie can follow her namesake throughout the Col. Potter process from intake to adoption.
For Dottie and all the other folks out there that are potential dog rescuers, a great quote:
Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.

Welcome sweet little Buckeye to Col. Potter!

We were contacted by a shelter that we work with on a regular basis about a little Cairn they felt would do better going to rescue than being adopted out of the shelter. Many times this means they have health or behavior issues. NOT THIS TIME! A family had purchased him from a local pet store who is supplied and owned by the large puppy selling corporation based out of Missouri. (You know, the one that ships dogs in large semi-trailers to their stores.) After just a few weeks, they decided he had too much energy and was too much for them to handle. Well, DUH, he's a Cairn puppy ... They surrendered him to the shelter.
We got him picked up from the shelter pronto not wanting to expose him to any of the health issues that can be present in a shelter environment because of his age. My thanks to the Col. Potter volunteers who moved so quickly to get this little boy to safety and the new foster home he will be headed to.
And now, may I present Buckeye, an absolutely adorable little boy, born 1/7/10 which means he just celebrated his 4 month birthday!! Welcome little Buckeye and this won't be the last birthday you'll be celebrating safe and loved!

Happy Mother's Day to Doggy Moms!
This is for the mothers who have sat up all night with sick dogs in their arms, wiping up barf laced with edible and inedible things and saying "It's okay baby, Mommy's here."
Who have sat on the floor for hours on end soothing dogs who can't be comforted.
This is for all the mothers who show up at work with dog hair on their suits, unexpected scratches on their wrists and poop bags in their purse, coat pocket, pants pocket and all other pockets.
For all the mothers who make their own dog food and treats. And all the mothers who don't.
This is for the mothers who help the new mothers deal with the loss of their litter. And the mothers who help them cope when they are given new homes.
This is for the mothers whose priceless art collections consist of ribbons and photos.
And for all the mothers who froze their buns, sweated gallons, and swatted away bees to watch their precious prance into a ring and achieve 2nd place and then jump around as though they had won best in show.
This is for all the mothers who go to the special pet stores to collect the proper treats, food and toys no matter that it take 3 stops and 50 stoplights.
This is for all the mothers who taught their dogs to sit, come and stay. And for all the mothers who opted for sit.
This is for all the mothers who teach their dogs agility and obedience and actually understand that it needs to be FUN!
This is for all the mothers who took their dog to the vet assuring them that there would be no needles only to be told they need a blood sample.
For all the mothers whose dog has gone missing and was returned because she had the forethought to have chip put between its shoulders.What makes a good Mother anyway? Is it patience? Compassion? Ever available treats?
The ability to answer the door, hold back the dog and deal with a phone call all at the same time?
Or is it in her heart?
Is it the ache you feel when you walk out the door to your job every Monday through Friday knowing that 2 eyes are boring into your back?The jolt that takes you from sleep to dread when you hear the sounds of heaving at 2:00 am?
Years later, the guilt that won't go away when you have no other choice but to put your friend down?
The emotions of motherhood are universal, and so this is for you all. For all of us...
Hang in there. In the end we can only do the best we can. Tell them every day that we love them.

Vicar saves his Cairn with mouth-to-muzzle resuscitation!!!!
Reverend Blay immediately stopped the rehearsal at St Wilfred's church in Mobberley, Cheshire, to pull out a piece of cheddar cheese lodged in the dog's throat, before giving his beloved terrier mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
His wife Suzanne, 43 told the Daily Mail: 'Ian's intervention was incredible and saved Izzy's life. Bizarrely his kiss of life happened just as the couple were about to rehearse the bit where the groom has to kiss the bride.
'I had been unpacking the shopping and Izzy has cheddar cheese as a little treat now and again.
'But she started choking, really, really badly and making noises and it was then when she just flopped on the floor.
'I slapped her, then panicked and ran out of the house. I was going to run to the farm next door but then I remembered he was in the church and I was so desperate and crying.'
She continued: 'Ian removed the cheese with his fingers, gave Izzy the kiss of life and the father of the bride gave chest compressions. Izzy then just rolled over and ran out of the church and started drinking some water back at the vicarage.
'I thought when I brought her into church Izzy she was dead, it was unbelievable at the time.
'When I first ran into the church everyone just stopped and turned round.
'Ian said when I first ran in he didn't believe she was dead but it was only when he saw how floppy she was he then started to realise something was wrong.
'It was a big relief and very emotional when she came back round again. When you look back at it, it is quite funny. To think she could have died from a piece of cheese though is terrible.
'I gave Izzy a big cuddle after. I definitely won't be feeding her any cheese in future.'
Newlyweds Toby Wilbraham, 36, and Caroline McGoun, 35, tied the knot for real the following week, without any canine interruptions.
The groom's mother Helen said: 'My son had told her what had happened as they were fine-tuning their big day.
'As the rehearsal was taking place, the vicar's wife burst into the church carrying this limp dog and I have been told it looked like it was clearly dying.
'The vicar took the dog into the vestry and then scooped out a lump of cheese that was lodged in the throat. He then gave it the kiss of life and it was alive.
'Everybody who was there was just agog.'

Dog lover volunteers to rescue cairn terriers, find them homes

PORT ST. LUCIE — Linda Bagley recalls the first time one of her foster cairn terriers was adopted into a new home.
"I cried," she said. "It breaks your heart. You really become attached to them. Even though you want them to have a good home, I always say a piece of your heart goes with them."
For the past year and a half, rescuing cairn terriers and helping them find good homes has been a labor of love for Bagley, manager of Port St. Lucie's Public Works Department and a volunteer with the Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network. The not-for-profit organization, comprising volunteers across the country, rescues and rehabilitates unwanted cairn terriers.
Bagley said she learned of the organization while searching for a companion for a cairn terrier that she acquired as a family pet.
"We loved the breed," she said. "We knew that he needed a buddy, so I went online and I came across Col. Potter. … I was just so in awe of the whole operation of how they did everything."
Bagley, 59, said she handles publicity for the organization and helps arrange foster homes for cairn terriers in Georgia and North Carolina. She also has provided a foster home to local cairn terriers.
"It's very, very rewarding," she said. "I've never done anything that makes you feel the way this does."
Last year, four of her foster pets were adopted by new owners and so far this year, one of the two that she's taken in has been adopted.
Bagley said she's always loved dogs. Along with her foster pets, she has four dogs in her Port St. Lucie home. Bagley said the organization acquires many of its dogs from puppy mills and rehabilitating them so that they can be adopted can be particularly challenging.
"When you get a dog that's coming from a puppy mill, you can't even imagine what this poor animal has endured," she said. "It takes awhile for you to regain their trust."
What has been your biggest accomplishment?
'I got my (business management) degree when I was 50-some years old. I worked for a former director that was really big on education. I took his challenge.'
What's one thing people don't know about you that would surprise them?
'A lot of people that first meet me don't know that I'm from New York. I never had the typical New York accent.'
Who is your hero or someone who has inspired you?
'(Former city councilwoman) Jane Rowley. She is my second mom. She always volunteers for everything. She has a big heart and she always has time for everyone.'
With whom would you like to have dinner?
Two of my favorite people that I think do a lot in this world are Oprah and Ellen DeGeneres. They are very giving people.'
Rhianna comes under CP's umbrella

This cute, no-so-little, cairn girl is now a Col. Potter girl. She's 6 years old, and has had her last litter of puppies - she's now going to be enjoying life as an empty nester!
She has had her spay and spa treatment making her strawberry blonde fur glisten. Rhianna has a few pounds of baby fat to shed but that doesn't slow her down if there's a critter to be chased. She's all terrier and sweet as can be - a great combination.
She will be heading to her foster home soon and is looking forward to a forever home in her future. Please welcome Rhianna, princess-in-the-making!!

Buster is a cairn with a celebrity owner!

Penny Lancaster photographed twelve star pets and their celebrity owners for the 2007 PDSA Pet Pawtraits calendar.
The calendar highlights the special relationship between celebrities and their pets and is one of the charity’s major fundraising initiatives. Profits from the sale of the calendar went directly to PDSA to help fund free veterinary care for sick and injured pets whose owners are unable to afford veterinary fees.
This is the page which featured Simon Cowell with his cairn, Buster.
Please continue to submit photos of cairns past and present who enrich the lives of historical figures, celebrities, politicians or people in the news. We love to see our cairns in print!

IF I DIDN`T HAVE A DOG OR CAT
My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated.
All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture, and cars would be free of hair.
When the doorbell rings, it wouldn't sound like a kennel.
When the doorbell rings, I could get to the door without wading through
fuzzy bodies who beat me there.
I could sit on the couch and my bed the way I wanted, with out taking into
consideration how much space several fur bodies would need to get
comfortable.
I would have money, and no guilt to go on a real vacation.
I would not be on a first-name basis with 6 veterinarians, as I put their
yet unborn grandkids through college.
The most used words in my vocabulary would not be: out, sit, down, come, no,
stay, and leave it ALONE.
My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates or barriers. I would not talk 'baby talk'. 'Eat your din din'. 'Yummy yummy for the tummy'...
My house would not look like a day care center, toys everywhere.
My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats and an extra leash.
I would no longer have to spell the words B-A-L-L,, W-A-L-K,, T-R-E-A-T,,
O-U-T,, G-O,, R-I-D-E,, C-O-O-K-I-E
I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside.
I would not look strangely at people who think having ONE dog/cat ties them
down too much.
I'd look forward to spring and the rainy season instead of dreading 'mud'
season.
I would not have to answer the question 'Why do you have so many animals?'
from people who will never have the joy in their lives of knowing they are
loved unconditionally by someone as close to an angel as they will ever get.
*How EMPTY my life would be!!!*

FROM THEM, THOSE WHO AWAIT US
found on a pet loss website
Dedicated to all who have loved and lost a companion animal
~FROM THEM, THOSE WHO AWAIT US~
To have loved and then said farewell is better than to have never
loved at all.
For all of the times that you stooped and touched my head, fed me my
favorite treat and returned the love that I so unconditionally gave
to you. For the care that you gave to me so unselfishly. For all of
these things I am grateful and thankful. I ask that you grieve not
for the loss but rejoice in the fact that we lived, loved and touched
each others lives.
My life was fuller because you were there, not as owner, but as my
friend. Today, I am as I was in my youth. The grass is always green,
butterflies flit among the flowers and the sun shines gently down
upon all of God's creatures. I can run, jump and play and do all of
the things that I did in my youth. There is no sickness, no aching
joints and no regrets and no aging. We await the arrival of our
lifelong companions and know that togetherness is forever. You live
in our hearts as we do in yours. Companions such as you are very rare
and unique.
For love never really dies, and you are loved and missed as surely as
we are.
They whom we love and lose are no longer where they were before.
They are now wherever we are.

I am an Animal Rescuer
My job is to assist God's creatures.
I was born with the need to fulfill their needs.
I take in new family members without plan, thought or selection;
I have bought dog food with my last dime;
I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand;
I have hugged someone vicious and afraid;
I have fallen in love a thousand times; and
I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body.
I have Animal Friends and friends who have animal friends.
I don't often use the word 'pet'.
I notice those lost at the road side and my heart aches.
I will hand raise a field mouse and make friends with a vulture;
I know of no creature unworthy of my time.
I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven.
But I believe there are -
Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind?
We may be master of the animals,
But the animals have mastered themselves;
Something people still haven't learned.
War and abuse make me hurt for the world,
But a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for mankind.
We are a quiet but determined army and making a difference every day.
There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan;
nothing more rewarding than saving a life;
no higher recognition than watching them thrive;
there is no greater joy than seeing a baby play who, only days ago,
was too weak to eat.
I am an Animal Rescuer.
My work is never done;
My home is never quiet;
My wallet is always empty;
But my heart is always full.
WREATH RAFFLE TO BENEFIT CRETE!

Today I want to remind you about the wreath raffle that is happening right now. There is one week left for you to buy a ticket for this wreath that was donated to help raise funds to pay for little Crete/Alex's vetting. This is one of ours. We all know about him being lost, probably taken, but none of us know what he has been through, or for that matter what his foster mom has been through. Anyone that has ever lost a dog knows the heartache, the fear of not knowing what was happening to your fur baby, not knowing if your fur baby was laying somewhere injured needing you, or worse yet dying alone. So many of us prayed and cried for him.
Well against all odds our prayers were answered. Our little blind boy with a broken pelvis managed to drag himself home to Robin, the only love he has ever known. Now that he is home safe the longest journey has begun. There are weeks of healing ahead for Crete also known as Alex, none of which would have ever happened if not for Col. Potter. Now is not the time for all of us to breathe a collective sign of relief. Now is the time to step up and show our support to little Crete/Alex and to his wonderful foster mom.
His surgery wasn't free. It cost some big money. We need to step up and help with the costs. What better way then to buy a raffle ticket to help cover the added costs to his stay in Col. Potter's care. Not to mention that his wreath is beautiful and would be a wonderful accent to your home or garden. I know that many of you are thinking "Well, we just had a NLOL raffle. We have all that money. Some of that can be used for Alex's vetting costs. I brought tickets for that." You did, and we all thank you. But I have seen both sides of that coin. I am a Crafter/Fundraiser. I thrill with every dollar brought in.
Yet having The Oz Project I also get to see first hand the dollars going out. Think what it cost you to take in just one of your kids for vetting. I'm talking bringing them up to date on all their shots, checking for heart worm and buying the preventive, cleaning and treating ear infections, treating eye infections, worming, treating for fleas and ticks and then buying preventives, having nails 1 1/2 inches long cut back, having injuries treated, and sometimes hernias fixed, and then when that's all done having your fur kid spayed or neutered. Col. Potter does this cairn after cairn, day after day. How long do you really think that the money from a NLOL raffle really lasts?
How far do you really think those dollars can be stretched? Sadly being a Crafter/Fundraiser and having The Oz Project it didn't take long for me to learn that " We are never dollars ahead but always faces behind" the little faces that are left behind at commercial breeding facilities. Alex's unexpected injury and treatment has taken much needed funds away from those little ones waiting for us to come for them. I've seen so many of those little faces and looked into so many of their little eyes. I've never seen one that I didn't think was worth going the extra mile for. We can do it!
We can cover Alex's vetting costs and put the funds back into saving more lives. So follow this link to buy a ticket for $15.00 or maybe two. For each ticket that you buy your name will be added to the hat(state of the art drawing). You never know you might be the one to win this wreath and even if you don't win you'll still have the fun wondering and waiting to find out if you are the lucky winner.

Montreal, Calgary and Winnipeg Visit with Friends
I have moved Vancouver out of the puppy room so the pups can have visits from the other furkids and Vancouver can learn about homes and not having to be a mom anymore. As you will see in the video, the pups are sassy, especially Winnipeg and Calgary...who takes no guff from her bigger brothers. Tootsie was being a good nanny laying next to the expen so the puppies could chew on her, Gabby tells them what she thinks(the aroos in the video) and Gouda is fascinated by the little furballs. He often lays a little ways from the expen and just watches the puppies.
Sometimes it sounds like the pups are in a full blown fight the way they sound with vicious growling. I often go check to make sure no one is really getting killed.

Vancouver and Pups Outdoors
Yesterday the ringworm culture on the puppies came back as negative. As my vet suspected, Vancouver and the puppies did not have ringworm, but a staph infection which was treated with antibiotics. Now that we know for sure Vancouver and the puppies are not contagious, they got to go outside for the first time today. Vancouver is less interested in the outdoors than getting attention. She seems to be very people friendly like many of the other City Slickers.

CRETE IS OUT OF SURGERY - PLEASE CONSIDER BEING A GUARDIAN ANGEL FOR HIM - THIS IS HIS STORY ...SO FAR
4/28/10: On Thursday April 22, in the wet state of Colorado, our own Col. Potter's Crete came up missing. All of his 4 legged brothers and sisters were still in their crates or beds but, one blind, 11 year old, red wheaten was on the lam. Calls were made to Col. Potter , surrounding shelters, animal control, and neighbors. Foster Mom started walking, calling, banging the bushes, looking under cars, trucks, sheds, even stacks of lumber. At 10 pm the flashlights came out and the dogs came along to check the green belt, and down the side streets calling, calling, calling.
Friday morning more alerts were sent out, Fed Ex, UPS, US Post Office, more time spent talking to neighbors, people walking by, area Vets, boarding facilities, and area groomers. All have posters, and posters are hung on every street within 5 miles. Another trip to the shelter aisles, looking into the sad eyes of the dogs who didn't have a loved one to search for them.We get a call from the shelter - a Cairn has been picked up, but not our Crete . Saturday, Sunday, Monday more of the same.
Finally on Monday out of the blue about 3:15 in the afternoon, a golden boy shows up in the front yard. He is scared, and has black dried spots on him. At first we thought he had been bitten, and the spots were dried blood. His leg is hurt and he won't put any weight on it. Into a crate and off to the vet we go. On exam he hasn't lost an ounce of weight, there are no puncture wounds, and it's not mud or blood in his coat just FLEAS. So he got an immediate application of Frontline.
No injuries to speak of except the leg.So off to the emergency vet for an x-ray. It's clear the little guy is hurting and he has bruising on the inside of his leg all the way over to his groin area. He has deep purple bruising, the real "owwie" kind, but being a Cairn he doesn't whimper or whine. After a shot of pain reliever, he relaxes enough to give foster mom a kiss and heads off to x-ray. The vet comes in with the films, and says his pelvis is fractured in one place and maybe two. So we call an orthopedic surgeon, and the first estimate is $3000. Okay, we get a second estimate of $2000 to $3000. Crete stays overnight with the emergency vet, where a blood test is given. He has low potassium, gets an IV and pain meds. We check in with two other orthopedic surgeons and the best plan is still going to cost $1500.
So we called the regular vet to let them know what was going on and luck had the traveling orthopedic surgeon is in to do surgery on another rescue girl. He offers to take a look at the films. Dr. Ed says he can fix Crete 's pelvis. He loves Cairns and he knows he's got another rescue pup on his hands, so his is estimate $1100 to $1500.
I just got off the phone with the vet. He did great. His little pelvis was shattered so he is sporting some new hardware and had to have a bone graft. He is awake and trying to stand on it already and waiting for his snack.
So our little recovering Cairn boy says "I need more prayers and some donations 'cause the Col. says they will fix me up. If you could help out with a buck or two , then my bill won't hurt any of my cousins chances for a new life - like Col. Potter is giving me".
You can help to fund Crete's recovery by clicking here to participate in Col. Potter's Guardian Angel program on his behalf.
Opee joins the CP family

Everyone, meet Opee. Opee is 4 1/2 years old and joined Col. Potter this past weekend. The volunteer who picked him up said he is a baby doll! That was great news as Opee has some anxiety issues and was said not to do so well traveling, but you'd never know it based on how well he did getting to his foster home.
Thank you everyone for helping Opee.
Welcome to CP, Opee!
