Watch out for Gator!

Please welcome this handsome little red wheaten boy--Gator. He is 5 years old and was picked up as a stray. The shelter located his owner (via his microchip) but the owner didn’t want him back – said he has health problems and is moving.
Gator is an extremely happy dog and carried on many conversations with the staff at the shelter while there. He has some skin issues and needs to lose a few pounds, but other than that he is very healthy.
Welcome little guy – Col Potter will get you back into top shape and find just the right home for you!

Hurricane Pet Preparedness, Redux

As someone who’s lived through more than my share of hurricanes (I live in South Florida, after all), I’ve become something of a pro on animal disaster prep. That’s why I feel qualified to offer you my tips. And now that the season is upon us, I think we can all use a refresher, anyway.
1. Do most of your prep well in advance … on paper
This is by far my most crucial bit of advice. Imagine a storm on the horizon that's due to arrive three days from now. What will you do? You’re working your butt off, knowing you’ll have to organize all the teensy details in your yard and tie up loose ends at work. Next thing you know you get word that it might be a category 4. So now you have to scramble to evacuate, too. That means shopping, vet trips, etc.
Think out the scary scenarios in your head and commit them to paper before you’re faced with storm or evacuation notices twelve hours — or less — beforehand. Know where you're going AND TAKE YOUR PETS WITH YOU! There is never a good excuse to leave your pets home alone during an evacuation-worthy storm! Let me repeat … TAKE YOUR PETS WITH YOU!
2. Isolate pets so you can divide and conquer
If you’re staying at home, here’s what you need to do:
Find a spot to isolate each pet in your home so you know where she’ll be if the storm gets rougher than you expected. Crates and cages are a must for most pets. Think out the ideal spots: Away from windows, against walls, or inside small bathrooms that have been safely trimmed of nummy, peppermint foot creams, and poisonous sprays.
This year I’ve even planned things out for my goats. While I’m currently building a category 2-worthy shed, I’m investing in two extra-large crates just in case we get a big one and they need to stay inside.
3. Plan for safe water stores
Yeah, you need to plan for enough clean water for your pets, too.
Have plenty of empty containers for filling up with clean water for after the storm, should major infrastructure damage occur in your area. Buying bottled water is usually a waste of energy, whereas filling up clean, reusable containers is very green and (I think) more convenient to boot. (Pets don’t savor Perrier any more than tap water, in my experience.)
4. Focus on food and supplies before the storm
Have enough pet food, medication, and supplies on hand for a minimum of two weeks. Get to your vet and pet store way in advance.
5. Sedation sensation
OK, so I don’t ever sedate my pets — none have yet to require it. But I'm willing. Some pets will experience severe trauma during the kind of storm that brings heavy thunder, loud freight-train noises and/or tree limbs crashing down about your house. We’ve dealt with this recently, so refer back to my storm phobia what-to-do post.
If you know that your pets have severe noise phobias, sedatives and secure crates will almost certainly be necessary. Plan ahead by discussing this with your vet in the off-season so you can give the meds a whirl in a controlled (non-storm) setting. Do NOT plan on using any meds for the first time just before a major weather event (also discussed in a recent post on sedation).
OK, so that’s what I’ve got. Concentrate most assiduously on #1, OK? Any questions?

Meet Clooney the singing dog. He’s such a sweet little guy. Every night at supper, he starts singing with his first bite. When he gets finished, he likes to push his bowl around the kitchen. Maybe he’s trying to give me a hint that he wants some more. This evening after he ate, he decided to talk to his friend Widgit through the kitchen gate. Clooney is such a wonderful dog I know he’s going to get his forever home soon. Clooney lives in Louisiana with his foster family. .

Video - Demonstration of Tellington TTouch from 1st Annual Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast Fun Day.

There was a demonstration of the Tellington Ttouch technique at the the 1st Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast Fun Day. We appreciate our volunteer who filmed and provided this for us to share.
We hope you enjoy this video which demonstrates the Tellington Ttouch. Linda Tellington-JonesTTouch created this method where circular movements of the fingers and hands are used to create a sense of calm allowing the dog to be touched without feeling stressed. This can be very helpful for shy former breeding facility dogs.
According to the TTouch website: “this method based on cooperation and respect offers a positive approach to training, can improve performance and health and presents solutions to common behavioral and physical problems.”
This technique can be very helpful to alleviate stress in your dogs.

Flash the Fire kid

Hi Everyone,
Flash has been here for week one week now and I couldn't ask for a sweeter foster. But she has to be the busiest little foster I have ever had. She acts more like a 1 yr old than a 4 yr old, she is full of kisses and so far likes everyone she meets including small children. While she hasn't played with them she likes to give them kisses. She very much could be in a home with other dogs or alone as long as she has a person to love her.
She can jump like a kangaroo and if you have enough furniture in the room her feet would never touch the floor she will just jump from piece to piece. (bounce, bounce, bouce) She takes treats like she is afraid she might hurt you and sleeps or rests nicely in her crate. When her coat grows back in (which it is doing really well) she is going to be a little tiny beauty.
She is settling in and runs like a deer on her leash, so get on your running shoes. Flash loves the fenced yard and I think she has a fairly strong prey drive. But all in all a great, great little love bug, Flash is easy on your eyes and easy to love.
She is being fostered in Georgia and will be available for adoption soon. Please be sure to visit our website to check out all of the cairns we have available for adoption.

Welcome Paige

Please help welcome our newest rescue, Paige. This gorgeous 5 year old girl earned her freedom this past weekend, from a life in a commercial breeding facility. She is very friendly, happy, and loving. Paige doesn't know a stranger and loves and kisses every person or child she meets!
This week she will have her spa treatment, and this weekend she will head to her foster home for the next leg on her journey.

The 1st Annual Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast Fun Day with a Video!

The group picture
The First Annual Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast Fun Day was held on May 15th of this year. Maeva and Kerby L. hosted the event at Qualicum Beach. A great time was had by all and the group raised over $330.00 for CP.
All of the Cairns met in a neutral area, the Qualicum Beach off-leash dog park. The dog park is a large fenced field that is partitioned into two separate areas. Maeva and Kerby booked the larger area for the cairns. We played there as other dogs lined the fence trying to figure out how to join in the fun. It is a great facility, with running water and a nice covered seating area.

Cypress has got TALENT!

Dear Cuzins,
Everybody's got talents, but I think we found mine today. I have been DISCOVERED! I gotz talent!
You see at my house, Mama has a toybox in the famblyroom. It's a GREAT BIGtoybox like Uncle Brian makes. In fact it's JUST like the ones Uncle Brianmakes! Yesterday I found it and climbed right in, head first. Down inside it I found this CUTE pink bunny. She's bigger than my head! but I'm a strong littlecairn girl, so I held my head REALLY high and brought it over to show Mary. ThenI had to go find a whole bunch of other toys to show Mary. I was very busy digging in the toybox for quite a while!
This morning, after I went potty, I got to go in the famblyroom again (this isthe DISCOVERED part). I found a fun toy and brought it to Mary and she tossed itaway from her. I went and got it for her and she tossed it again! I kept picking up her toys and bringing them back to her and she kept throwing them. She said Iwas playing fetch and she said I was the BEST fetcher she'd ever seen! We played for FIFTEEN minutes straight and every time she threw it, I'd bring it back to her.
This is a fun game. You guys should try it at your house!

Jester rescued by Col. Potter

Jester is an 8 year old stray that came into a Midwest shelter. When his time was up CP was called to take him in.
This little guy is a tad under weight as he weighs only 14lbs. It was discovered he was in need of some long overdue dentistry. Poor little guy, wants to eat, but he just hurts! Jester will receive all the vetting he needs and be on his way to his foster home soon!
Let’s all give a big CP welcome to Jester.

Parasol is a 6 year old cairn princess who found herself abandoned. Her owner had asked acquaintances to watch Parasol while he had a medical procedure. It turns out he really wanted to fly home and leave Parasol with a family. However, this new family had a landlord, and when asked, Parasol was not allowed to stay with them. Col. Potter was notified, and Parasol was surrendered to us.
Parasol is reportedly a whopping 12 lbs, quiet, and loving. Please give Parasol a great big CP welcome!

CP Volunteers bring a cairn ambassador to their booth at the Pawsitively Yours Event in Southeast Michigan in July.

What a day to be a Col. Potter volunteer! Sunny skies, a green pasture full of animal lovers and dogs!!! The Pawsitively Yours event was a first time rescue event for dog, cat and horse rescues. The Belleville Pet Resort and Loving Arm Rescue Ranch were the sponsors.
Since it was the first year and way out in the boonies it didn’t have as much traffic as one would hope. However, there were many vendors and other rescues in attendance so it was a fantastic opportunity to get the word out to them. It’s always good to have eyes in the shelters and referral sources. If someone is looking to adopt a cairn they won’t likely forget the Michigan CP crew.
The Col. Potter booth location was perfect and seemed to attract more serious inquires about fostering, volunteering and adopting. We had one woman tell us that her friend recently adopted from us. We gave her a little postcard (a Toto postcard with my Abby’s face on it), thanking her for adopting and to stay in touch. Hopefully, she will become a happy member of our volunteer force.
The event was set up beautifully and organized in a large area that was normally used as a dog park. It was a gorgeous sunny day in southeast Michigan with no harsh weather except some wind that picked up later in the day.
Our booth was hosted by Toby D, Susan D, myself and the oh-so-charming darling girl Chicago aka Chica. Chica is a real sweetheart of a little girl. She is 8 going on 2 with so much joy and curiosity. Susan has done so well with this sweet survivor. There was not a dog or person that Chica didn’t like.
The biggest downside was the fact that there were train tracks directly behind us. Chica wasn’t too terrified of loud noises, she just snuggled her Fosser Mama. Chica was a fantastic cairn ambassador!
All in all, it was a worthwhile day. I spoke to Toby afterward and we both felt that we made at least 2-3 solid volunteer contacts and/or potential adopters. The day of the event we took in $40, with donations from the public, a few bucks from the CP volunteers and 20% of my measly Avon earnings . The Monday following the event, Toby’s intern threw in another $20 to round us up to a respectable $60.
A special thanks to Susan D. for driving all the way down to this event. It took 2 hours with the construction along the route. Without a cairn in attendance, we wouldn’t have had as many people stop! Thanks to all who helped us make this happen.

Silk's video debut

Silk is 8 years old and she was rescued last year and had her last litter of pups in the loving arms of Col. Potter. She is currently being fostered in Virginia and you can go to our website to learn more about her and all of the wonderful cairns we have that are available for adoption.
She came to B&B with us last month and despite her fears she seemed to thrive on the change so we decided to foster her.
Silk is so sweet and is learning that humans CAN be good - especially when they give you body rubs and ear scritches. She absolutely loves Ed and the feeling is mutual. The first day we had her he was sending me pictures of her on the phone with the caption "The little princess."
But Silk is MOST happy when she can run around outside. Unfortunately we live in a townhouse and have a very small yard, but on our recent visit to West Virginia she was able to take advantage of our big fenced area there and she ran and galloped and cavoted, all the time with a big doggie smile on her face.
I managed to capture some of it on video (she's afraid of the camera) and will be sending to be added to her web listing. I really hope this touches someone willing to give this little mill mama a chance. She's the first "typical" mill mama we've fostered and I have to say that we all (including our sons) rejoice with every new brave step she takes.
Silk is the wheaten in the purple harness running around and doing a little dance. Chewy is the larger wheaten doing his Eeyore shuffle.
DISCLAIMER: It may look like the dogs are running loose in the middle of the woods, but actually we were on a "trail" right next to the cabin (the cabin was directly to the left I just never got it in the shot) and there's a wire fence through the trees on the right side of the trail and then across behind where Ed is standing in the red shirt. If we take them any further up the trail we then put a leash on them. Believe me - I would NEVER let them run loose in the woods of West Virginia!!

last year's calendar was a sell out!
It's that time again. What time? 2011 Calendar time. What - it's already the last week of August- how can it be CP Calendar time now?Well - this thing takes work work work. And it needs to go to the printer in just a few WEEKS! So, I am asking everyone here to please help me.
As I am sure all of you know and can see from this picture of last year's calendar page,we always have a Rags to Riches page where we show the stories of 4 or 5 Cairns who went from Rags to Riches while in CP. There is a catch here. There are many many Cairns who came in with behavioral problems but who seemed to look OK. They had a full coat, bright eyes, etc. As touching as many of these stories are, they do not do well in a visual format. So I need PICTURES and stories of CP rescued Cairns who underwent both an external as well as internal transformation. And truthfully, for the calendar, the external transformation is really more important.Anyone remember the treats (I think Stollen, and Babka and that group but I could be wrong) who came in with such matts that it was unbelievable. Those would be great Rags to Riches dogs. Last year I used poor Servus. He was a MESS! So, are you currently fostering a potential Rags to Riches dog or did you foster one that was in the system after 9/15 of 2009? If so, please send me before and after pictures as well as the dogs story.
I will be most grateful.I am also looking for pictures of Cairn Mischief. Really good pictures showing your Cairn in the middle of a mess he or she made. If you have one of those, please send it along. Deirdre - please send me the one of Miracle getting into the cookie jar. I want that one for sure. Also, I am looking for Cairns in Costume as well as Silly Cairns (I have no idea what I mean by silly but I know that I will recognize it when I see it. ALL PICTURES MUST NOT HAVE A HUMAN IN IT. This is important for legal purposes. I have no idea what the legal ramifications are but I know what I was told and I question not the grand pooh-bahs of the world. Also, the pictures I will choose from the ones I get (please send me pictures) will probably have the dog against a contrasting color background that is not full of other things like cords or toys or other dogs. A wheaten dog on a beige carpet is way too difficult to work with so no matter how cute they might be these pictures rarely get included.
So if you want your dog in the upcoming calendar (aside from all the dogs who will be in it because they were in the Col. Potter system from 9/15/09 -9/01/10) please send me your pictures as soon as possible. These do not have to be pictures of this year's dogs. I just want pictures to fill the bill. As you may have just noticed I have pushed back the date from 9/15 to 9/01. I have done this so it can get to the printer sooner and up on eBay sooner. If we want to sell lots of these, eBay needs the calendar by the last week in September at the latest. So I need these pictures SOON.
Also, either get down on the floor or put your dog on a chair or table so your dogs eyes are mid level in the picture. Thanks so very much. You help is most appreciated. And I am unhappy to inform you that should you submit a picture it might not be used. It might be the cutest picture ever taken but if I doesn't fit into the scheme of what is going on I will not be able to use it. So I thank you in advance for your understanding if I do not use that absolutely amazing shot you sent to me. It will not be discarded and will probably show up in some CP production sometime in the future. I am super busy trying to get this calendar ready for press and even 10 seconds is precious.So you have a great picture/story (Rags to Riches) and want to send it to me. Introducing Lummi

Lummi's owner had a reversal of fortune and was no longer able to care for this precious boy. On top of that, at 11 years old, he was in desperate need of a dental. Col. Potter was contacted and a foster home was found.
Lummi had a way to continue the meds he needs, and was given his dental. Last week his owner, heart broken, gave Lummi to CP.
Everyone give Lummi a big CP welcome and keep his former owner in your thoughts and prayers as this was such a selfless act of love for this cairn.

See Sainted Riley in Action at his foster home!

Several people have e-mailed me to see how our first foster, Sainted Riley is doing.
He has come a long way from me having to take off the top of the crate to get him out his first afternoon here!!! He is a precious little guy and we ARE making progress.
I'm sorry my voice is so low on the video but he's still very sound sensitive so I was really trying to talk softly so as not to scare him.
I REALLY need to vacuum but keep putting it off because I don't want to freak him out.

Stressed about leaving your pets home alone? Don't worry–we've got plenty of tricks for stay-at-home dog and cat entertainment.
Leaving a bored cat or an energetic dog alone all day can make any pet owner resent the 9-to-5 grind. Since most people can’t quit their jobs to stay home with their pets, here are a few ways to ease the guilt of leaving your cat or dog home alone:
Bored Cat? Not Anymore!
1. Create a room with a view. Cozy up a windowsill or get your cat a perch that allows him to sit and observe the world. You may find discussing the weather boring, but that’s cat entertainment!
2. Hang toys. When you can’t play all day, rescue your bored cat with a ribbon on a doorknob or a mouse attached to a shelf.
3. Get your cat some company. Consider a kitty playgroup or daycare once or twice a week for your cat, or take the plunge and get a second cat. If you go the playgroup route, your cat will get a few hours a week of companionship while you’re at work. And if you get another cat, that’s constant companionship—and twice the love and purrs for you!
Tons-of-Fun Dog Activities
1. Hide snacks. The only thing more exciting than getting a treat is finding that treat. Invest in a puzzle-treat ball, so your dog can play with the toy while working toward a snack. His mind stays active and he has fun!
2. Try doggie day care. Your dog will love day playing with an assortment of canine and human friends. The belly rubs and daylong attention is great for him.
3. Stimulate his senses. If you’ve noticed that your dog likes TV or radio, consider low-volume media stimulation while you’re away. If only he could brief you on the news!
4. Hire a private friend. A dog-walker or neighbor can visit your dog in the middle of the day—this choice is great for older dogs or pooches that have accidents.
Remember, though, the majority of the time that you’re away, your pets probably won’t even notice. For the most part, if they don’t have a reason to do otherwise, pets sleep all day.
Plus, dogs prefer to be active at the beginning and end of the day—in other words, the times when you are home—and, although cats are more active during the day, they are better than dogs at amusing themselves.
If you focus on giving your animals quality time when you are there, taking good care of them, and making sure their food, exercise, and attention needs are well met, they’ll be happy to spend the time you’re out of the house taking a well-deserved nap.

How Good is that 'Expired' drug in your Pet's Medicine Cabinet?

Get this: pharmacists are required to attach a one-year expiration date to all of the drugs they dispense, and they're legally enjoined to do so regardless of the manufacturer's expiration dates. Which means the same is true for veterinarians, seeing as we're required to comply with pharmacy laws, too.
That’s just wrong! After all, the drug manufacturers are required to test the safety and efficacy of their drugs under warm, humid environments for years beyond their manufacturing date. So why then does the FDA feel justified in placing limits where they previously did not exist?
Here's what the pharmacy profession argues: Because we don't test drugs at the time of dispensing, we don't know whether they're still as good as the manufacturers say they are. Read between the lines: We don't want to be legally responsible. Read between the lines some more: Limiting the expiration date is an easily defensible way to encourage more drug sales.
But if you're like me, you look up the manufacturer's expiration dates and you follow those instead of the pharmacy's.The expiration date is always one year out unless the manufacturer's expiration date precedes it. This being the law and all that.
But it's not fair, you might argue. It's not exactly consumer friendly to arbitrarily set higher bars on some products — especially when they are so transparently yielding bigger bottom lines for those who lobby in their favor.
Why? For two reasons, the former employee explained:
1. Because people probably store animal medications even more carelessly than their own, and
2. Because this way people are less likely to stop their drugs and start them up again whenever they please.
OK, so I'll concede to the second point. But then, there are plenty of times a vet at Town & Country Veterinary Clinic asks an owner to stop a med and start it again. So why make them come in again for a "fresh" round? That's wasteful! It's wrong! And it's not consumer friendly.
So what do I recommend YOU to do? I recommend that you follow your veterinarian's instructions. But I also recommend that you ask for the manufacturer's expiration date on meds that might need to be administered again in the future. Why waste?
Still, there's one caveat. There's no need to trifle with meds that potentially offer immediate, life-saving benefits. Epi-pens (epinephrine injections for anaphylaxis), for example. But then, I've only ever prescribed Epi-pens for three patients. Yep. Sometimes I think the pharmacy industry protests too much on their own behalf.

Please welcome Rosso to CP

Today we welcome CP's newest furkid Rosso. Rosso is red in Italian and that is a perfect name for this 3 yr old red wheaten boy. Big brown eyes that will melt you. Our new boy is a little round but his foster mom will take care of that.
Life changes affect everyone and Rosso was a victim of those changes. He has been well loved since a puppy and CP will find him the perfect home to continue his good life.
Welcome little man!

Welcome Henna to Col. Potter!

Sometimes fate works in mysterious but fortunate ways. Another purebred rescue (non-cairn) was in the process of securing the future of two furkids at an animal shelter. The rescuer noticed Hennna with her sweet face and big dark brown eyes. One look and she knew Henna couldn't be left behind knowing what her fate would soon be. Henna had been an unclaimed stray and her time was up. The shelter was overcrowded and euthanizing. So Henna got a reprieve and a start to a new life that day. The rescue that pulled Henna gave her the spa treatment and groomed her matted, dirty coat. Col. Potter was contacted to help get Henna further on the road to a new life.
Henna is a young girl, estimated to be 2 years old, loves to sit in your lap, and knows some commands (sit, come, no, & crate). She's smart, quick and can give any leash a good test for 'chewability'.
Please welcome Henna, the girl with a coat of many colors.

CP's newest intake--Stooshie!

Found on the streets in a rural area on the east coast, a matted and dirty terrier was deemed unadoptable due to his “poor condition”. CP was contacted to take him, and less than 24 hours later, this little man made his was to the vet’s office. His poor condition turned out to be a nothing more than a course antibiotics and a good bath to cure him of his “unadoptability”.
Stooshie is an old Scottish name meaning “A little bit of trouble”. Thankfully, this little man is not living up to his name. Stooshie has stole the hearts of every person in the vet office. Reportedly, he’s the perfect house guest, loving, friendly, funny, full of personality. He’s brought nothing but joy to their office.
